Excellent!

I purchased "The Historical Dictionary to Islamic Fundamentalism" to help me with my studies. It was such a wonderful reference! I used it for many essays and for studying. It is easy to use and it explains concepts clearly. Well cross-referenced and the extra features are great: an Arab/English dictionary and chart of all the Isloc groups!! Really indispensable. I highly recommend this book!

A probelmatic approach to the issue.

The author's approach to "fundamentalism" is problematic and self-contradictory. In particular, the first word he uses to discribe his approach is "internal" (4), which suggests that he is seeking to look at how Muslims who seek "a return to the religion's basics" (1) see themselves. He then goes on to describe Muhammad 'Abdu as having a "nonfundamentalist approach to the religion" (13). However, 'Abdu definitely saw himself as calling for "a return to the religion's basics," which is a crucial aspect of the author's definition of "fundamentalism." So, while the author is claiming an "internal" approach, he is imposing his own external definition of who qualifies as a "fundamentalist."
