The Drum: A History, by Matt Dean

In The Drum: A History, drummer, instructor, and blogger Matt Dean details the earliest evidence of the drum from all regions of the planet, looking at cave paintings, statues, temple reliefs, and burial remains before finding existing relics of actual drums, which have survived thousands of years. Highlighting the different uses and customs associated with drumming, Dean examines how the drum developed across many cultures and over thousands of years before they became the instruments we know today.

A celebration of this remarkable instrument, The Drum: A History explores how war, politics, trade routes, and religion have influenced the drum. Bringing its history to the present, Dean considers the modern cultural and commercial face of the drum, detailing its role in military settings and the development of the "modern drum kit." This study charts the evolution of the recording studio environment, as well as specific analysis of the development of drum heads, sticks, and the often overlooked role of women on the drum kit. In addition, there is a look at the continuing evolution of the drum and its role through surveys of main manufacturers and the increased dependence on electronic drums, sampling machines, and drum recorders.

As the first book to detail the entire development of the drum, The Drum: A History will appeal to every drummer, regardless of genre or style, as well as any reader with a general interest in the evolution of this universal instrument.

Review
This is certainly an ambitious work--it contains more than 400 pages of text, an extensive bibliography, and a helpful index (which includes albums, bands/ensembles, drums, drum-product manufacturers, people, pieces, places, and general information). A professional drummer (and also a music journalist), Dean reveals that he wrote the book to satisfy his personal curiosity, to "find out how the modern drums that [he] play[s] today evolved and from where they came." He also suggests that acquiring such knowledge can help make one a better drummer/musician and consumer of music. To that end, this book would be useful as a basic resource for locating additional materials. Dean's writing style and organizational format make for a memoir-type narrative--a book reminiscent of Encyclopedia of Percussion, ed. by John Beck (2nd ed., 2007, CH, Jan'98, 45-2347) but infused with anecdotes (some of them intensely personal). The result is a hybrid work containing threads of scholarship, biography, and personal memoir. It might encourage readers to reflect on their own lives and careers in similar fashion. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE)

[The Drum: A History] is a detailed look at the development of our favorite instrument from the ancient times to the modern drum kit. The book begins with an exhaustive cataloging of drums from across the globe, divided into geographical region. . . . The breadth of material is impressive.

(Rhythm Magazine)

In this...book...[Matt dean]...provide[s] a comprehensive history of drums and drumming from ancient times right up to the latest innovations in both popular and concert music....this book can be highly recommended...for the chapter on the history of the drum set. (Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association)

For those who work at universities and other music centers, this book is an outstanding publication and would be a great addition to your library. (Percussive Notes)

Experiencing Jazz: A Listener's Companion, by Michael Stephans

In Experiencing Jazz: A Listener’s Companion, writer, teacher, and prominent jazz drummer Michael Stephans offers a much-needed survey in the art of listening to and enjoying this dynamic, ever-changing art form. More than mere entertainment, jazz provides a pleasurable and sometimes dizzying listening experience with an extensive range in structure and form, from the syncopated swing of big bands to the musical experimentalism of small combos. As Stephans illustrates, listeners and jazz artists often experience the essence of the music together—an experience unique in the world of music.

Experiencing Jazz demonstrates how the act of listening to jazz takes place on a deeply personal level and takes readers on a whirlwind tour of the genre, instrument by instrument—offering not only brief portraits of key musicians like Joe Lovano and John Scofield, but also their own commentaries on how best to experience their music. Throughout, jazz takes center stage as a personal transaction that enriches the lives of the musician and the listener. Written for anyone curious about the musical genre, this book encourages further reading, listening, and viewing, helping potential listeners cultivate an understanding and appreciation of the jazz art and how it can help—in drummer Art Blakey’s words—“wash away the dust of everyday life.”

From Booklist
This guide to jazz by jazz drummer and educator Stephans is for the interested but uninformed reader. One would need to be extremely interested, because the book is quite long, comprehensive, and occasionally dense, but readers who persevere will emerge more informed listeners, better able to enjoy and appreciate America’s great music. Still, there are problems. The author’s introductory assertion that he departs from chronological sequence in favor of an instrument-by-instrument discussion is only partially true, and the doubly focused narrative results in considerable repetition. There is more on the musicians than the music, and much of the text devolves to mere lists of names, on which many standout performers and groups not fitting the author’s framework are only fleetingly mentioned (Roland Kirk, Chucho Valdes, and Regina Carter or any other violinist), and others (particularly his friends, fellow educators, and bandmates) are overemphasized. Its perspective is very New York, overlooking the fertile West Coast and Chicago music scenes (the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the AACM are only touched upon). He provides useful chapter-by-chapter bibliographies and, in lieu of a discography, a guide to websites, an inevitable twenty-first-century departure from the previous norm in books of this kind. Recommended as a supplementary source for jazz collections. --Mark Levine

Review
Award-winning writer, teacher, and renowned jazz drummer Michael Stephans invites the reader on a guided tour of the jazz world in this essential survey of the genre’s history. This groundbreaking book reframes ever-evolving, distinctly human, art of jazz and invites readers to relearn how to listen. Yes, listening, really listening to music is the lost art that Stephans works to preserve. He forgoes chronological order, instead approaching the subject from the standpoint of instruments and musical innovators while offering a comprehensive social, cultural, and musical history of jazz, from its birth to its present day. This survey of jazz is particular among jazz appreciation texts because it is written by a jazz musician who is currently active on the global jazz scene. With a forward by esteemed jazz writer Doug Ramsey, and preface by jazz master Dave Liebman, this text is a culmination of many prominent voices of the jazz world. At the heart of the book, readers are invited onto the bandstand to listen to personal accounts and legendary jazz stories. In an art form that enriches the lives of the listener and the musician, 'the more we listen, the more we hear.' (Publishers Weekly)

Stephans, a prominent jazz musician, has written widely on jazz music and has written promotional material for many fine musicians. His style is straightforward and easygoing, and will help long-time listeners of jazz and those new to the genre cultivate an understanding and appreciation of jazz music. He gives readers explanations of both technical and scholarly aspects but also important points of what we should be listening for. He provides a survey in the art of listening to jazz and provides an insider's perspective to its ever-changing culture. Along the way he provides readers chapters with important historical and musical insights into the history and styles of jazz during the 1940s and 1950s, discusses the functions and forms of jazz on and off the bandstand, gives details on small groups and big bands, and discusses the key instrument and their significant roles in music (e.g., trombone, saxophone, piano, clarinet). An index makes it easy to find specific topics, persons, places, or musical pieces. As good as this book is—and it is wonderful—it cannot bear scrutiny as a reference tool. Rather, it is a monograph on the history, styles, and movements of jazz music. (American Reference Books Annual)

He provides useful chapter-by-chapter bibliographies and, in lieu of a discography, a guide to websites, an inevitable twenty-first-century departure from the previous norm in books of this kind. Recommended as a supplementary source for jazz collections. (Booklist)

Experiencing Jazz is unlike any other listener's guide. An experienced jazz performer himself, Stephans describes this book as a 'guided tour to the world of jazz.' Rather than offering an alphabetical compendium of artists with brief annotations about his favorite recordings (and to whom one should listen), the author digs deeper to help the reader better understand what to listen for and how to listen. He engages the reader with descriptions of venues, the life of a working musician, record labels, and the business of music. At the heart of the book are some dozen chapters devoted to the principle instruments in jazz, and conversations with a master of that particular instrument. . . .A solid resource for an appreciation class, Experiencing Jazz takes up many substantive topics. This volume will lead to a more meaningful appreciation of jazz and its practitioners. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; professionals; general readers. (CHOICE)

As a very successful attempt to draw interested parties into the world of jazz, Experiencing Jazz is highly recommended. (Musoscribe)

The book is written so that the student or interested reader can sample chapters of interest and still benefit. Of course, reading all the way through, as I did, allows one to appreciate the subject in its entirety. There is liberal use of photographs, many of which come from William Gottlieb’s collection, now owned by the Library of Congress, and by extension, we the American public. Another interesting aspect of the book, Stephans lists the official websites of the principal performers and suggests collateral reading. As mentioned already, he gives some illustrative jazz anecdotes which personalize for the reader the jazz experience. Mr. Stephans, besides being an active jazz drummer, is a poet, author and professor. At Bloomsburg University, part of the U of PA system, he teaches a writing course for science and technology majors. Who would benefit from this book? Jazz enthusiasts, especially students and those wishing to develop a broader appreciation for the art. (Jazz Society of Pensacola)

About the Author
Michael Stephans, Ph.D., teaches writing at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. An award-winning poet, writer, and jazz journalist, he has written liner notes and promotional material for luminaries such as Bennie Maupin, Bob Brookmeyer, and David Liebman. Stephans is also a prominent jazz musician and has performed and recorded with a wide array of jazz artists.

PERSONAL INVITATION TO EXPERIENCE JAZZ
By KTD
This book is a refreshing change from other jazz books I've seen, which tend to be focused on history and analysis of the music. What makes Stephans' book unique is that it was written by a professional jazz musician, rather than a critic or an academic. While the book offers a good historical and cultural foundation for the new or inexperienced listener, it also takes us on a tour of most of the major musical instruments used in jazz, and introduces us to important stylists on each instrument. I really enjoyed Stephans' personal touch throughout the book - his recollections and stories about meeting and playing with quite a few of these greats.

Another thing that I found quite useful and interesting is that Stephans interviews over a dozen of today's greatest jazz musicians, allowing them to speak directly to us about where to start when listening to their music.

One more unique quality of this book is it's extensive reference section: Stephans lists musicians' websites, biographies, videos, and other books, magazines, and websites about jazz. He even includes a glossary of "hip jazz lingo!"

All in all I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in jazz but doesn't quite know where to begin to listen. More seasoned fans will undoubtedly enjoy it as well.

An amazing book, to say the least!
By Vickie S.
Michael Stephans has written an immediately captivating book about learning to experience jazz. It's a dictionary, it's an encyclopedia, it's a treasury of references, it's personal tales and humorous stories and so much more! What a terrific way to learn all about jazz in a non-text book fashion. Mr. Stephans' style is so easy to read and understand, is very conversational and such a pleasure from which to learn! The book is beautifully organized and I can truly say I felt the author's love of jazz shine through on every single page. A classic treasure for sure!

A PHENOMENOLOGY OF JAZZ
By Steven M. Sanders
Experiencing Jazz: A Listener's Companion is an uncommonly clear and engaging discussion of the history, personalities, techniques, and existential availability of this remarkable musical form.

The author, Michael Stephans, is uniquely suited to the task of providing this listener's companion. Readers will benefit from the insights derived from his lifetime in the jazz world as a deeply engaged and polished jazz performance and recording artist in both New York and Los Angeles as well as in South American and European venues. They will learn some of the idioms and vocabulary of jazz (from "bebop" to "wail"). They will savor the book's many first-rate photo illustrations They will learn from the interviews with jazz greats. Mainly they will appreciate the non-technical way the author makes the case for the art of listening to and appreciating jazz while moving through a discussion of each of the main instruments to be found in the evolution of jazz music (trumpet, trombone, saxophone, bass, drums, etc.).

As a writer, poet, jazz journalist and educator, Stephans, is fully-informed, clever, subtle, and amusing. His tale of two encounters with the great jazz drummer Buddy Rich is but one example of the incident and anecdote that enliven the book and attest to its author's love of the music and its players.

Ultimately, what Michael Stephans has provided is a phenomenology of jazz -- an insider's account of the experience of jazz and its most rewarding aspects.

Animals in Young Adult Fiction (Studies in Young Adult Literature), by Walter Hogan

Of the many themes occurring in young adult literature, one that bears more extensive exploration is the adolescent-animal connection. Although substantial critical commentary has addressed children's animal stories and animals in adult fiction, very few studies have been devoted to adolescent-animal encounters.

In Animals in Young Adult Fiction, Walter Hogan examines several hundred novels and stories to explore the ways in which animals are represented in these works. In additional to providing an historical survey, Hogan looks at both realistic fiction and speculative works, including fantasy, supernatural, horror, and science fiction. Hogan reviews stories that feature wild animal encounters, stories centered on relationships with horses, dogs, and other working and performing animals, and those featuring relationships with pets. Drawing upon established scholarship, this book examines human-animal relationships from multiple angles, making it an invaluable resource for librarians, teachers, and students of children's and young adult literature.

Review
A good resource for professionals, because many novels included in the discussion show up on required-reading lists at the middle- and high-school levels. (Booklist 2010-01-01)

This volume offers a meticulous examination of several hundred titles from award winners to the more obscure novels. While it is relatively easy to find reviews of animal-themed books for younger readers, this is the first book-length study of the topic for YA novels....This is a well-researched book....It deserves to be read cover to cover. (School Library Journal 2010-02-01)

A thoughtful perusal of animal relationships with children. . . . This title is recommended. (American Reference Books Annual)

Professionals interested in gaining insight into the seemingly endless appeal of animals in teen literature need look no further than this comprehensive overview of the genre . . . This insightful and informative title will benefit students, librarians, and educators looking to improve their readers' advisory skills or simply to better understand the appeal of the genre. (VOYA 2009-12-01)

Thorough and thoughtful in-dept examination
By Carey Hagan
I happened upon this book in the local public library, and it's not the typical "book about children's literature" they buy. It's more academic and analytical in its scope, more like something you'd find in university library. However, for people who are interested in children's and YA literature [like me], it's really, really good. The chapters are as follows: historical overview; wild animal encounters; working and performing animals; companion animals; and fantastic animals. There's an author/title index, a subject index, and a really good bibliography. My personal favorite chapters were the ones on companion animals and fantastic animals. I started writing down all the books I wanted to read which were mentioned in this book, and then I realized I'd need 100 years to do so. I would recommend this for teachers, librarians, and people deeply interested in children's/YA literature.

The term Polynesia refers to a cultural and geographical area in the Pacific Ocean, bound by what is commonly referred to as the Polynesian Triangle, which consists of Hawai'i in the north, New Zealand in the southwest, and Easter Island in the southeast. Thousands of islands are scattered throughout this area, most of which are currently included in one of the modern island states of American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Hawai'i, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and Wallis and Futuna.

The third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Polynesia greatly expands on the previous editions through a chronology, an introductory essay, an expansive bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, events, places, organizations, and other aspects of Polynesian history from the earliest times to the present. Appendixes of the major islands and atolls within Polynesia, the rulers and administrators of the 13 major island states, and basic demographic information of those states are also included.

Review
This revision to the 2002 edition by Pacific studies specialist Craig (history, emeritus, Alaska Pacific Univ.) has been fully updated to include developments as recent as early 2010. Opening with an expanded, 20-page chronology that begins with 1300 B.C.E., the book continues with a valuable 13-page introductory essay-style overview of Polynesian history, divided by major periods. A majority of the book is devoted to 400 alphabetized entries explaining the major figures, places, items, rituals, and organizations vital to the cultures of Polynesia's 13 island states. An amazing 81-page bibliography organized by nation makes this a must-have for Pacific studies researchers. (Library Journal)

Part of the Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East series, this volume includes a chronology of events in Polynesia and a brief general introduction. Entries on any number of political, historical, and social topics make up the bulk of the dictionary. Appendixes cover the rulers of the various governments in the countries and territories of Polynesia and the names and locations of all the islands that fall under the definition of Polynesia. There are also an extensive bibliography of books and articles on the region of Polynesia and separate bibliographies for each of the various colonies and independent countries. If a library has a copy of the first or second edition, it is well worth updating the collection with this title. Author Craig, a professor emeritus at Alaska Pacific University, has conducted research on and lived in Polynesia for extended periods. (Booklist)

Bohuslav Martinu: The Compulsion to Compose, by F. James Rybka

Bohemian composer Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was exceptionally prolific, composing over 400 imaginative, well-crafted, and diverse pieces, including symphonies, operas, ballet scores, and other orchestral works. For 12 years (1941-1953), he lived in America, during which he enjoyed a brilliant reputation, and his works were played by nearly all the major orchestras. Yet today, his works are rarely performed.

In Bohuslav Martinu: The Compulsion to Compose, F. James Rybka provides a documented explanation for Martinu's amazing output: he had Asperger syndrome. Indeed, Martinu is believed to be the first composer ever to be documented, albeit retrospectively, with an autistic spectrum disorder. In this unique biography, Rybka follows Martinu's life from his birth in Policka, Bohemia to his composition studies with Albert Roussel, his escape from Nazis, and his rise as an internationally recognized composer with premieres of his works in Boston, Prague, London, and Basel.

As Rybka explains how the dynamics of Asperger Syndrome affected the composer's work, readers will more fully appreciate Martinu's accomplishments and legacy. Containing important letters and photographs, this book will inspire and inform those impacted by autism but will also be of interest to music scholars and students alike.

Review
The finest biography of Bohuslav Martinu I know in English....Rybka's biography is detailed and engagingly written. His insight is personal and convincing....His text is well balanced between quotations and narration, pictures abound, the book is well indexed and notated....Reading this account is like having a long, pleasant personal discussion with Rybka about a fascinating uncle he knew very well. (American Record Guide)

The project of this book represents an admirable undertaking....With the help of the documents he has at his disposal, he is able to bring to life his family’s long-term friendship with Martinu, as well as include his own thoughtful observations about Martinu and his personality. (Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association)

Overall, I believe this an extremely valuable contribution to a rounded picture of this wonderful composer. (Classical Net)

Understanding the artist
By jimpy
The author through personal experience with Martinu and with extensive research on autism demonstrates why this socially inept composer has the compensatory gift of compulsive orchestral composition fairly exploding from brain onto pen and paper. Asperger's Syndrome is the perfect fit explaining Martinu's deficiencies and his genius. An easy to read text with superb explanatory footnotes that maintains the reader's interest throughout.

A prolific composer.
By Peteklat
As is the case with composers who produce greatly, (Martinu seems to have put pen to paper every day) the output is somewhat uneven. But the best music is no less than utterly brilliant. Rybka discusses WHY Martinu seems to have been driven to compose so much, and he may have a point. You have to read the book to find out. I found his book very convincing, just as I do most of Martinu's music.

Martinu: The Man Behind the Music
By Martinufan
Unlike Martinu's previous biographers (Milos Safranek and Brian Large), Rybka moves beyond the familiar chronological overview of his life and works to paint a flesh-and-blood portrait of the man as well. Since Rybka's father was a long-time friend of Martinu, and the author (as a child and young man) got to know him personally, he is eminently qualified to offer this "personality portrait" (warts and all). Rybka begins by presenting his medical thesis regarding Martinu's "compulsion to compose" and then unobtrusively offers supporting evidence in the midst of his chronological narrative when an apt biographical situation arises. How refreshing to read an author who has an interesting "take" on a subject, but sees no need to belabor his point or struggle to force unlikely facts into a procrustean bed to fit his theory. It's all very "casually" argued, and all the more convincing as a result. I found the book a real page-turner. True, it is less musicological, but is infinitely more human and and engaging than the previously mentioned biographies.

Anyone who knows Martinu's music well knows something of his "soul," but to reconcile this with the outward "shell," his personality and actions, is a leap - and one that Rybka attempts to bridge. If you know Martinu's music, reading this book will certainly make you more aware of the sometimes glaring differences between the "outer man" and the inner creative spirit, and to be reminded not to judge the one by the other. And so, deep thanks are due to Dr. Rybka for expanding our understanding of human behavior even beyond his intended subject..

Historical Dictionary of Neoclassical Art and Architecture (Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts), by Allison Lee Palmer

Neoclassicism refers to the revival of classical art and architecture beginning in Europe in the 1750s and lasting until around 1830, with late Neoclassicism lingering through the 1870s. Neoclassicism is a highly complex movement that brought together seemingly disparate issues into a new and culturally rich era, one that was, however, remarkably unified under the banner of classicism. This movement was born in Italy and France and then spread across Europe to Russia and across the ocean to the United States.

The Historical Dictionary of Neoclassical Art and Architecture provides an overview of Neoclassicism, focusing on its major artists, architects, stylistic subcategories, ideas, and historical framework of the 18th century style found mainly in Europe and the United States. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 200 dictionary entries on famous artists, sculptors, architects, patrons, and other historical figures and events.

Review
Author Palmer characterizes neoclassicism as “the revival of classical art and architecture beginning in Europe in the 1750s and lasting until around 1830, with late neoclassicism lingering through the 1870s.” Palmer is associate professor of art history at the University of Oklahoma and author of Historical Dictionary of Architecture (2008), also part of Scarecrow's Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts series. Following a format similar to other titles in the series, Historical Dictionary of Neoclassical Art and Architecture begins with a 3-page chronology and a 14-page introduction. A 237-page dictionary section isthe heart of the book. Entries feature mostly painters, sculptors, architects, and other figures. Assorted entries also address relevant subjects including Biedermeier, French Revolution, Grand Tour, Rococo, Romanticism, and Veduta (“a painted, drawn, or engraved landscape of a specific place”), which has a 2-page entry. Boldface within an entry identifies subjects having their own main entry. See also references are frequent. An extensively subdivided 35-page bibliography (including a bibliographical essay) concludes the book. Recommended for academic and large public libraries. (Booklist)

This is a fine work that is essential for all universities that support majors in art, architecture, and history. (American Reference Books Annual)

Historical Dictionary of Tennis (Historical Dictionaries of Sports), by John Grasso

The sport of tennis has been played in one form or another for more than 800 years. It can trace its roots to games played by monks in the 12th century. Through the years the game has evolved from one in which the ball was struck with the hands to the modern game in which rackets are used to propel the ball in excess of 150 miles per hour. From the sport of the elite to the sport played by elite athletes, tennis has grown immensely in the past 135 years and it remains one of the few sporting pastimes that is played extensively by people of all ages and all nationalities.

The Historical Dictionary of Tennis presents a comprehensive history of the game through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, photos, and over 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries on places, teams, terminology, and people, including Arthur Ashe, Björn Borg, Don Budge, Chris Evert, Roger Federer, Billie Jean King, Rod Laver, Suzanne Lenglen, John McEnroe, Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova, and Bill Tilden. Appendixes of the members of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Major Championships of Tennis, and the Olympic games are included. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about tennis.

From Booklist
From its medieval roots to the modern-day grand-slam events, tennis is a popular sport, for both players and fans. This dictionary covers the history, rules, competitions, and personalities of the sport of tennis, from 1874 to 2011. The introduction gives the roots of the modern sport, details grand-slam events, mentions the tennis boom of the 1970s, and ends by discussing current tennis events. Arranged alphabetically by subject, the dictionary itself covers rules, scoring, events, and countries. Most importantly, major players are featured, showcasing their personalities and their importance to tennis. For many fans, it is the players who provide the most interest, and this work is filled with biographical information but only six black-and-white photographs. All of the big names in the sport are included: Bill Tilden, Maureen Connolly, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Venus and Serena Williams. Nine appendixes list information on and winners of the major Open and Cup events as well as International Tennis Hall of Fame inductees and Olympic Games champions. The work concludes with a bibliography of historical, biographical, and instructional materials as well as tennis periodicals and websites. The most useful feature of any historical dictionary of a sport is the organization of the people, events, history, rules, terms, and champions in one concise volume, and this work is a fine example. Recommended for public, school, and academic libraries where there is an interest in sports, and for libraries owning other volumes in this series. --Abbie Landry

Review
This alphabetized lexicon profiles the people, groups, events, techniques, court terms, and geographical locations of tennis history. Following an event chronology that commences with 1874 and concludes with 2011, Grasso (Historical Dictionary of Basketball) offers a concise historical overview in his 17-page introduction. Black-and-white player photographs sometimes accompany the multiparagraph, cross-referenced entries. Nine appendixes provide quick-reference to Hall of Fame inductees and championship winners from various international competitions. (Library Journal)

In this volume in the new "Historical Dictionaries of Sports" series, historian Grasso starts with a chronology of important events. Following this, a short introductory essay attempts to summarize the evolution of tennis up to the modern game. The greater part of the book consists of the 500-plus entries in the A-Z dictionary, a mixture of terms, rules, places, various countries' histories, and short biographies of many famous professionals. Any person, place, or thing that has its own biography or definition is readily identified because names and terms are cross-referenced in boldface font throughout the dictionary. The final sections include the roster of the International Tennis Hall of Fame inductees, the results of the four Grand Slam tournaments and international events (including the Olympics and Davis Cup), and an extensive bibliography of other resources. Overall the author does a commendable job in construing tennis....Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. (CHOICE)

With its impressively broad scope Historical Dictionary of Tennis is a useful historical overview that is both well-researched and balanced. The appendices at the back of the book are vast, covering 70-plus pages, and list important statistics such as winners of major tournaments and cups, and a list of International Tennis Hall of Fame inductees. This is also quite useful as a quick resource guide and, together with the historical introduction and the extensive reference list, provides the most relevant and pertinent parts of the sport of tennis. Arias, Ensembles, & Choruses: An Excerpt Finder for Orchestras (Music Finders), by John Yaffé, David Daniels

Conductors John Yaffé and David Daniels have created a one-stop sourcebook for orchestras, opera companies, conductors, and librarians who research and/or prepare programs of vocal excerpts—such as solos, ensembles, and choruses—for concert performance. In this book, readers will find detailed information on a vast repertoire of vocal pieces commonly extracted from operas, operettas, musicals, and oratorios—more than 1,750 excerpts from 450 parent works. Modeled on Daniels’ Orchestral Music, Arias, Ensembles, & Choruses includes basic historical details about each parent work as well as extract titles, subtitles, voice types, keys, durations, locations in the original work (with page numbers in both full scores and piano-vocal scores), and exact instrumentation. It also lists the publishers that make available the orchestral materials for just the excerpt being programmed, independent of the full parent work.

Until now, conductors and orchestra librarians commonly had to first leaf through full scores, searching for one elusive three-minute aria after another, only to then consult multiple publishers' catalogues to compile crucial information on all the excerpts proposed for a concert or recording. This book constitutes a single source for finding that information. In many cases, the individual entries include valuable insider information on common performance practice, including start- and stop-points, transpositions, and conventional cuts. Searching for repertoire is made easy with the detailed title index and appendixes devoted to ensemble excerpts, all categorized by personnel (e.g., duets, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, choruses) and language (Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian).

This book is the ideal tool for the working conductor and orchestral librarian, as well as music program directors at colleges and conservatories, opera companies, and symphony orchestras.

As of October 2015, a new printing of this book has occurred to correct errors in the index. A PDF version of the new index is available to previous purchasers of the volume. Please contact Rowman & Littlefield's music editor for assistance.

Review
A review of a new book that will be valuable to conductors, choral directors, orchestra and opera librarians, and anyone planning programs with orchestra. "AEC" has been eagerly anticipated for years by those who prepare programs that include voice and orchestra. It is thoroughly researched, vetted by editorial experts, and indexed in every conceivable category. Not only opera and orchestra librarians, but every conductor and artistic advisor needs to add this indispensable volume to their nearest reference shelf.

This newest book in the Music Finders series published by Scarecrow Press, such as Daniels - Orchestral Music: A Handbook, Fourth Edition; Manning - Orchestral "Pops" Music: A Handbook; and Meyer - Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Repertoire: A Catalog of Modern Music, represent a valuable contribution to our reference repertoire.

Yaffé and Daniels have used their expertise as conductors, and their passion for musicology, to bring to light important details on more than 1,750 excerpts from more than 450 works from opera, operetta, oratorio and musicals. Extensive and fascinating notes are included for many entries, such as "This duet contains a significant solo part for the principal violin" or "In solo concert performance, one generally stops at the B-major chord at fig. [94]" or "In solo concert performance cuts are made in both sections reducing the duration to 6 minutes." Each entry contains information about language, voice type, timings, excerpt location (in both the full scores and vocal scores), instrumentation (in the standard Daniels format), start and stops, cuts, keys, and sources of orchestral materials for the excerpt.

This book will be a great help also to those choruses that are performing with an orchestra and need to find matching material, and it will go a long way toward solving the problems that librarians and conductors face in those dreaded "Gala" programs. (ChoralNet: American Choral Directors Association)

This work is designed for use by orchestra conductors, opera companies, and music librarians to assist with their selection of vocal excerpts (e.g., solos, ensembles, choruses) for performances. More than 1,500 excerpts from 400 works are provided, each including information on its history, extract titles, subtitles, voice recommendations, keys, durations, locations in the original work (with page numbers), and instrumentation. Details on the source are listed as well—not only for the full parent work but also for the excerpt being presented. By allowing conductors to find these excerpts apart from their larger parent work it will save them valuable time. Many of the excerpts also include expert tips, such as start and stop points, transpositions, and conventional cuts. Appendixes will aid in research as well: they provide excerpts categorized by personnel (e.g., duets, trios, quartets) and language (e.g., English, French, German, Latin). This work will be very useful for all types of music libraries as well as any library serving orchestral conductors, opera companies, or philharmonics. (American Reference Books Annual)
