Body image is a pervasive preoccupation for almost all teens. Nearly every teen has dealt with issues of height, weight, skin, and other features. And many teens have undertaken diets, engaged in body building programs, or resorted to surgery to alter their appearances. In Body Image and Appearance: The Ultimate Teen Guide, author Kathlyn Gay addresses all of these concerns to provide teens with a healthy way to think about themselves.

This book tackles such topics as the cultural standards of what a "perfect" body should look like, methods for changing appearances, and matters related to height, such as dwarfism and height discrimination. Throughout the book, Gay offers advice on how teens can learn to be comfortable with their bodies and move beyond unhealthy preoccupations with size and appearance.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Even though body image is adequately covered in many titles, and there are plenty of books that address issues such as plastic surgery, eating disorders, and body building, this one is different. The author takes a holistic approach to the topic, focusing on more than just girls wanting to be thin and boys wanting to be muscular. There are also chapters on dwarfism and weight bias. The writing is easy to understand and flows well. The book is full of first-person accounts of what it is like to be overweight/short/disfigured, etc. Each chapter includes copious endnotes and a list of resources. A few black-and-white photos appear throughout. A serviceable but not inspired choice.—Robin Henry, Wakeland High School, Frisco, TX

From Booklist
From asthma to volunteering, the topics covered in the long-standing It Happened to Me series address a wide spectrum of adolescent concerns. These entries follow the series’ standard format, which includes a stark, lackluster layout that is further diminished by a weak selection of grainy, poorly reproduced black-and-white photos. The serviceable text is the selling point here, and each title’s straightforward language is personalized with numerous heartfelt quotes from teens. Body Image and Appearance moves beyond expected sections on eating disorders and Barbie’s cultural impact to examine how muscularity, height, dwarfism, and disfigurement affect self-image. Examples of historical practices, from skull modification to foot binding, will particularly grab teens’ attention, while eye-opening statistics confirm what teens know about the impact of parents, peers, and cultural ideals of beauty on individual self-esteem. With extensive chapter notes and resource lists, these titles offer reliable starting places for personal or academic research. Grades 8-12. --Gillian Engberg

No art can survive without an understanding of, and dedication to, the values envisioned by its creators. No culture over time has existed without a belief system to sustain its survival. Black music is no different. In Cultural Codes: Makings of a Black Music Philosophy, William C. Banfield engages the reader in a conversation about the aesthetics and meanings that inform this critical component of our social consciousness.

By providing a focused examination of the historical development of Black music artistry, Banfield formulates a useable philosophy tied to how such music is made, shaped, and functions. In so doing, he explores Black music culture from three angles: history, education, and the creative work of the musicians who have moved the art forward. In addition to tracing Black music from its African roots to its various contemporary expressions, including jazz, soul, R&B, funk, and hip hop, Banfield profiles some of the most important musicians over the last century: W.C. Handy, Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Mary Lou Williams, John Coltrane, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Wonder, among others. Cultural Codes provides an educational and philosophical framework for students and scholars interested in the traditions, the development, the innovators, and the relevance of Black music.

Review
Elegantly and passionately written. (Cadence Magazine, July-September 2010)

An exceptionally prolific polymath, Banfield (Berklee College of Music) is only now approaching midcareer. En route to his PhD in music, he earned an MA in theology. As composer, his credits include operas, symphonies, and chamber works, many of which have been recorded (as has his own work as guitarist). Yet in the past eight years, and through a variety of academic appointments, he still found time to write three books: Musical Landscapes in Color (CH, Dec'03, 41-2076), Black Notes: Essays of a Musician Writing in a Post-Album Age (2004), and now this title, a historical journey informed by philosophical perspectives―a tale of African American productivity devoid of the 'commercial monster.' Banfield deals comfortably with all musical idioms, from concert music to rap, in harmony with the heritage of major aestheticians of the recent past. Though endnotes replace a bibliography and the terse discography cites only titles and performers―lacking record labels and, surprisingly, reference to works in the classical tradition (including Banfield's own)―this will be an important addition to collections of black Americana and philosophy. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE, July 2010)

He is the author of Musical Landscapes in Color: Conversations with Black American Composers (Scarecrow, 2003) and Black Notes: Essays of a Musician Writing in a Post-Album Age (Scarecrow, 2004).

African and African American Images in Newbery Award Winning Titles: Progress in Portrayals, by Binnie Tate Wilkin

Since 1922, the Newbery Medal of Honor has been awarded to distinguished works of literature for children. Although African and African American characters appeared in children's books well before the establishment of the Newbery award, such depictions were limited, with characters often only appearing as slaves or servants. However, over the last several decades, there has been much progress, and Black characters have played a much more integral role in many highly regarded novels. In African and African American Images in Newbery Award Winning Titles, Binnie Tate Wilkin provides a historical and contextual examination of books with such depictions that have been acknowledged by the nation's most prestigious award for children's literature.

Wilkin explores the depictions of African and African American characters in these novels and illuminates the progressive quality of such representations. Wilkin looks closely at such elements as aesthetic descriptions, subservient characterizations, the relationships between characters, and specific language usage to investigate how these images have progressed toward increasingly positive depictions. She also notes, when applicable, the significance of the lack of any African or African American images. This book is an essential resource for those interested in African American studies, children's literature, and the relationship between the two.

From School Library Journal
The author has exhaustively examined all books that have won the Newbery Medal and been cited as honor books since the award's creation in 1922. Her purpose is to evaluate the representation of Africans and African Americans, and to describe how these groups are portrayed in each title's historical context. In a short introduction, Wilkin surveys how changing images of African Americans in literature reflect evolving attitudes in American culture. Then she critiques each book's presentation of African Americans. Books with the most positive images are awarded three pluses, while books with marginal African-American characters are indicated with an M. She pulls no punches when identifying negative images. For instance, she cites the 1933 honor book The Railroad to Freedom as a horribly flawed fictional biography of Harriet Tubman for its use of derogatory terms to describe African Americans, among other faults. Readers may not be surprised to learn that representation has improved since the 1970s, when Virginia Hamilton and Mildred D. Taylor rose to prominence, and contemporary authors such as Christopher Paul Curtis and Jacqueline Woodson continue to create authentic, admirable characters. Wilkin commendably examines how books by authors of all backgrounds depict African Americans, demonstrating how we all play a part in defeating racism. An essential volume for scholars, teachers, and librarians.–Mary Landrum, Lexington Public Library, KY

From Booklist
Wilkin’s book investigates the evolving image of Africans and African Americans as portrayed in Newbery titles. The major part of the book provides a paragraph to page-length summary of each Newbery winner and honoree that mentions Africans or African Americans, emphasizing the attitude given about them, even when their presence is very limited. Wilkin notes how the groups have been treated more often and more positively over the years. She also marks those books that have “better” portrayals of Africans or African Americans (largely missing in early award years). A separate section reviews award books that only tangentially treat those groups. A final section briefly summarizes Newbery winners that did not treat Africans or African Americans. End matter includes an alphabetical list of Newbery authors, an alphabetical list of Newbery winners and honorees, and an index. This paperback offers a unique lens on Newbery books and sensitizes readers to changing cultural mores. --Lesley Farmer

Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue: The First Hundred Years and Beyond, by Derek C. Hulme

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75) was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, as well as the first major Soviet composer. In the fourth edition of Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue: The First Hundred Years and Beyond, Derek C. Hulme names and describes all known musical compositions of the Russian composer. More than 175 major works are annotated and discussed, including such comprehensive details as titles and subtitles, dates of composition, instrumentation, and duration; information on dedications and premieres; arrangements by the composer and others; publication details; notes on bibliographical references and the location of the autograph score; and comprehensive chronological lists of vinyl, compact disc, and visual recordings.

The entries are presented chronologically and by opus number, while indexes of names and compositions provide full accessibility. Several appendixes supplement the volume, guiding readers to further information in published sources and providing information on the composer's film, radio, television, and theatre productions; his abandoned projects and obscure works; and his recordings, including box sets and special USSR recordings. An appendix also discusses the monogram DSCH, a musical motif based on his name that permeates his compositions. This new edition also includes a comprehensive chronological chart of Shostakovich's works and historical events and several plates of memorabilia.

Review
The fourth edition of UK-based independent scholar Hulme's catalogue represents the culmination of his efforts on behalf of Shostakovich. The first edition appeared in 1982, and revised editions were published in 1991 (CH, Dec'91, 29-1865) and 2002. This revised fourth edition is truly a treasure trove of factual information about composition dates, autograph manuscripts, published scores, and recordings. The chronological lists of recordings are almost exhaustive in their comprehensiveness (exceptions include recordings of popular works issued in limited distribution). The cut-off date is 2006, but many recordings issued in the following two years are listed. The extensive bibliography contains brief annotations. Although Hulme continues his practice of intermingling works with opus numbers with Sans Op. numbers, he understands that this arrangement is problematic and hopes that a professional musicologist will compile a definitive catalogue of works in chronological order. The simplified index of compositions is arranged strictly according to genre. Hulme's work will serve researchers' needs adequately. Recommended. Academic and large public libraries; lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers, and general readers. (CHOICE, September 2010)

The author presents very detailed data, even where Shostakovich was at the time he composed certain of his works. Hulme has compiled one of the most comprehensive catalogs of a twentieth-century composer. (American Reference Books Annual, May 2010)

Hulme’s catalogue is the most comprehensive one available, and it is impressive in its scope. It is most useful for its extensive discography, and as an English-language starting point for those interested in Shostakovich’s music. . . .In sum, Hulme’s catalogue is well-organized, easy to use, and informative for scholars, performers, and the ever-increasing general audiences of Shostakovich’s music, which captures the hopes and fears not only of his era but also of our own. It is recommended for academic and large public libraries. (Music Reference Services Quarterly)

African American Journalists: Autobiography as Memoir and Manifesto, by Calvin L. Hall

In the last decade of the 20th century, during a time when African Americans were starting to take inventory of the gains of the civil rights movement and its effects on the lives of black professionals in the public sphere, the memoirs of several journalists were published, a number of which became national bestsellers. African American Journalists examines select autobiographies written by African American journalists in order to explore the relationship between race, class, gender, and journalism practice.

At the heart of this study is the contention that contemporary memoirs written by African American journalists are quasi-political documents―manifestos written in reaction to and against the forces of institutionalized racism in the newsroom. The memoirs featured in this study include Jill Nelson's Volunteer Slavery: My Authentic Negro Experience, Nathan McCall's Makes Me Wanna Holler: A Young Black Man in America, Jake Lamar's Bourgeois Blues: An American Memoir, and Patricia Raybon's My First White Friend: Confessions on Race, Love, and Forgiveness. The exploration of these works increases our understanding of the problems that members of other underrepresented groups may face in the workplace.

Review
African American Journalists is highly recommended for upper level undergraduates, graduate students, and those who are contemplating a career in journalism or communication studies. (College & Research Libraries, May 2010)

Calvin L. Hall argues that autobiography may be even more important for African Americans because 'the genre has been recognized and celebrated as a powerful means of speaking publicly about . . . what it means to be black in America'. . . . It builds on the idea that Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, and other journalists used autobiography as another forum for advocacy. (Journalism History, Winter 2010)

Although the form, organization and vocabulary reveal this work as a lightly edited dissertation, its point is strong. These autobiographical narratives with their intense personal feelings, do speak truth to power and can change the culture in newsrooms, offices and classrooms. They also should change what it viewed as newsworthy and what is missing from coverage. (American Journalism: A Media History Journal)

About the Author
Calvin L. Hall is assistant professor and faculty fellow in the Department of Communication at Appalachian State University.

Alex North's A Streetcar Named Desire: A Film Score Guide (Film Score Guides), by Annette Davison

Alex North's A Streetcar Named Desire: A Film Score Guide examines the acclaimed score for Elia Kazan's much-celebrated adaptation of Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Situating the score within the context of Alex North's life and career, the book begins with an overview of North's musical training and his works up to his first scores for Hollywood in 1950, demonstrating how his experience in writing music for stage, concert hall, dance, and documentaries each contributed to the skills necessary for film composition. Annette Davison uses examples from North's film career to identify and describe his scoring techniques.

Using manuscript and archival research, Davison explores both the play's debut stage production and the film's production process, with a particular emphasis on the genesis and development of the music heard in the film. Considering the influence and changes imposed by the film's studio (Warner Bros.), the Production Code Administration, and the Catholic Legion of Decency on the film, Davison explores the impact of these changes on the interpretation of this finely balanced drama, comparing the different versions of the film and its scores. The book concludes with a full and detailed analysis of the jazz-inflected score, taking a holistic approach and using both musicology and film studies to investigate the ways it gives a dynamic shape to the film as a whole.

Reflections on Blaxploitation: Actors and Directors Speak, by David Walker, Andrew J. Rausch, Chris Watson

In the early 1970s, a new breed of film emerged that would completely change the way black people were presented in movies. With their afros picked to spherical perfection and their guns blazing, big bad soul brothers and super sexy sisters lit up movie theaters across the country. Never before had black men and women appeared on screen in quite this way. In time, these films would be called "blaxploitation." And while it has long been debated exactly which film launched the blaxploitation era, the financial success of Melvin Van Peebles's Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and Gordon Parks's Shaft helped open the flood gates for the more than 200 films that are now considered blaxploitation.

Reflections on Blaxploitation: Actors and Directors Speak is a collection of interviews with many of the men and women who defined the genre. In candid conversations, some of the most important figures of the era describe what it was like to work on these films and what impact they had on American culture. Among those interviewed are such icons as Jim Brown (Slaughter), Antonio Fargas (Foxy Brown), Gloria Hendry (Hell Up in Harlem), Jim Kelly (Black Belt Jones), Ron O'Neal (Superfly), William Marshall (Blacula), and Fred Williamson (Hammer). Also featured here are some of the most influential names behind the scenes, including Larry Cohen (Black Caesar), Oscar Williams (Five on the Black Hand Side), and Melvin Van Peebles. This volume also includes a filmography of every known (or rumored) blaxploitation film, including their availability on VHS and DVD.

sometimes interesting
By Evelina
The book is a collection of interviews of people who worked in the genre, actors and writers and producers, Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Melvin Van Peebles, Glynn Turman, Ralph Bakshi and others. I liked what Williamson and Brown had to say the best. Williamson relates how he set out to become an action star and achieved his aim through determination and hard work (handsome visage also helped). Brown notes the need for blacks to make and produce their own movies and points out that no one is preventing that, just as no one prevented blacks from doing what Koreans do and opening up stores in black neighborhoods. Ron O'Neal was also good in detailing the travails of his career and seems like a thoughtful person. I don't remember the non actors except for Bakshi, whose animated work I saw once on TV and remember as rather racist. He condemns blacks who did not like his work as sell outs, which I think is unfair.

A good quick read.

The book is not a history of blaxploitation, just some comments from some that were in the genre.

Representing Black Music Culture: Then, Now, and When Again? (African American Cultural Theory and Heritage), by Bill Banfield

In this collection of essays, interviews, and profiles, William Banfield reflects on his life as a musician and educator, as he weaves together pieces of cultural criticism and artistry, all the while paying homage to Black music of the last 40 years and beyond. In Representing Black Music Culture: Then, Now, and When Again?, Banfield honors the legacy of artists who have graced us with their work for more than half a century.

The essays and interviews in this collection are enhanced by seven years of daily diary entries, which reflect on some of the country's most respected Black composers, recording artists, authors, and cultural icons. These include Ornette Coleman, Bobby McFerrin, Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka, Gordon Parks, the Marsalis brothers, Spike Lee, Maya Angelou, Patrice Rushen, and many others. Though many of the individuals Banfield lauds are well-known to most readers, he also turns his attention to musicians and artists whose work, while perhaps unheralded by the world at large, are no less deserving of praise and respect for their contributions to the culture. In addition, this volume is filled with candid photographs of many of these fellow artists as they participate in expressive culture, whether on stage, on tour, in clubs, behind the scenes, in rehearsal, or even during meals and teaching class.

This unique book of essays, interviews, diary entries, and Banfield's personal photographs will be of interest to scholars and students, of course, but also to general readers interested in absorbing and appreciating the beauty of Black culture.

Review
Banfield (Africana studies/music & society, Berklee Coll. of Music) has a singular perspective on the recent history of African American popular music. As a professor, composer, jazz guitarist, and recording artist, he has witnessed the rise and (he argues) the fall of black music from the early 1960s to the present. The format of the book is also distinctive, as Banfield collects essays, interviews with many key musical figures, and selections from several years of his personal journal. In doing so, he paints a vivid picture of the development of and trends in the music that have led up to the current rap scene and pressure on artists to become publicity sensations rather than bona fide musicians. VERDICT Rather than scholarly and dry, this thought-provoking, readable book asks valid questions and portrays a once thriving, creative musical community that has somewhat lost its way. Recommended for all African American music collections. (Library Journal 2011-10-01)

Partly Cloudy: Ethics in War, Espionage, Covert Action, and Interrogation (Scarecrow Professional Intelligence Education Series), by David

Partly Cloudy: Ethics in War, Espionage, Covert Action, and Interrogation explores a number of wrenching ethical issues and challenges faced by our military and intelligence personnel. David L. Perry provides a robust and practical approach to analyzing ethical issues in war and intelligence operations, and applies careful reasoning to issues of vital importance today, not only for soldiers, spies, and policymakers, but also for the citizens they serve and protect.

The topics addressed in this book range widely between a just-war analysis of Shakespeare's Henry V to an exploration of the nature and scope of ethics to the CIA's original "social contract." Other topics examined include objective moral principles versus subjectivist and relativist challenges; absolute duties versus prima facie obligations; cultivating moral wisdom; comparative religious views on killing and war; anticipating and preventing atrocities in war; secrecy and democratic accountability; a short history of Russian intelligence; employing espionage to penetrate hostile regimes and terrorist cells; covert political influence, coups, and targeted killings; the question of torture in interrogating detainees; and practical peacemaking strategies.

Review
A useful contribution to military ethics writing and a good general introduction to the field. It is recommended. (Parameters: Us Army And War College Quarterly)

Recommended. (Choice)

With Partly Cloudy, David Perry has made a substantial and timely contribution to current thinking on ethical issues surrounding both intelligence work, and war in general. His book highly deserves the close attention and discussion it is likely to generate among military and other ethicists and professionals. (Eric Jens International Journalof Intelligence Ethics)

David Perry… is eminently qualified to discuss the sort of ethical problems that can (and often do) arise in the conduct of war and intelligence operations. … [His] background, combined with Perry's years of research in open-source material on the work of military and intelligence personnel, his conversations with members of those professions that has yielded both frightening and heart-rendering testimony from soldiers and intelligence operative, and his careful and always balanced ethical analyses, make for a uniquely rich and discerning narrative. He also writes in an accessible and engaging style, which makes his books a delight to read…. There is much to admire in Partly Cloudy …. I warmly recommend this book to military officers, intelligence personnel, and anyone who wants to understand better the often difficult moral issues that arise in connection with the activities Perry describes. (Philosophy In Review)

When it comes to situations involving war, assassinations, bombing, torture, imprisonment of people without trial or conviction, or other similar acts, we may react without much thought regarding morality and ethics, when the harm is directed at our society. This book is an opportunity for the reader, whether a practitioner or not, to step back and ask "why?" (International Association For Intelligence Education)

David L. Perry's 2009 book, Partly Cloudy: Ethics in War, Espionage, Covert Action, and Interrogation, makes significant contributions to the ongoing discourse on some of the thorniest issues in military ethics. Perry has a solid background in theology and philosophy and taught ethics for several years to senior military officers and policy-makers at the US Army War College. As a result, he is well-versed in the Just War tradition and the current range of international scholarship in the field. This allows him to provide the reader with rich background and context for modern debates on subjects such as torture. He offers incisive analyses of established perspectives alongside his own original insights. Partly Cloudy will have value both to those who desire to remain current in the literature and those seeking a quality text for a course on the ethics of war…. The outlook for ethics in war, espionage, covert action, and interrogation may indeed be Partly Cloudy, but Dave Perry's clear-eyed contemplation of these murky matters is enlightening. (Journal Of Military Ethics)

About the Author
David L. Perry is director of the Vann Center for Ethics at Davidson College in North Carolina. From 2003 to 2009 he was professor of ethics at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Partly Cloudy
By Randy Johnson
Though written mainly for students of military and government study, Partly Cloudy is a book for anyone concerned about how our leaders act in our name. In these changing days of war, terrorism, interrogation, and foreign intervention we find that the values we once considered etched in stone are actually in constant flux. Beyond merely reviewing ethics, Partly Cloudy teaches its readers how to make complicated ethical decisions. Dave Perry covers his subject expertly and broadly, from how nations conduct war to how people conduct their daily personal interactions.
This reader purchased Partly Cloudy in the aftermath of the Osama Bin Laden killing. Was this historic event a moment to celebrate in the streets, or was it a moment for quiet reflection? Is there one right answer, or many right answers? Whatever your own reason may be for reading Partly Cloudy, I think you will find it to be a very thought provoking study; one that will leave you with lasting new insights on a very important subject.
