A "Must-Have" for those who teach 20th Century American Literature, American Literature Bibliography or Am Lit BI classes --

Robert Matuozzi (Humanities Bibliographer in English and American Literature) and Elizabeth Lindsay (Assistant Dean for Public Services) at the Washington State University Library are commended for going where few Ph.D.-level English professors dare to go -- to write a thorough research guide to a genre of American Literature.

The first chapter is a step-by-step instructional guide on how to break search questions into key words and descriptors that can be searched as Boolian "and", "or" and "not" operators or truncated in such databases as MLA International Bibliography (MLAIB), the Annual Bibliography of English Language Literature (ABELL), and World Cat.

Chapter 2 describes general literary research guides and companions, period-specific encyclopedias and companions, biographical sources, chronologies, and examples of selected individual author sources. Examples for this section are resources related to: Zora Neale Hurston, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, John Dos Passos, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Tokalas.

Chapter 3 is devoted to institution-specific, regional and world-wide online public access catalogs (OPACs). They sidestep discussion of product-specific vendor software and focus instead on the generalities all such catalogs share. Delving first into standard "Author," "Title" and "Subject" searching, the authors then describe examples of National Library catalogs, the Pre-1956 "National Union Catalog", and the "World Cat" and "Open World Cat" electronic databases.

Chapter 4 is more along the lines of what English professors will feel comfortable with -- descriptions of print and electronic bibliographies, indexes and annual reviews that are -- more often than not -- electronic versions of print sources they would have used in graduate school in years past, including: MLAIB, ABELL, and H.W. Wilson's "Humanities Index" and "Humanities and Social Science Index Retrospective." These are followed by descriptions of other standard American Literature Bibliographies (e.g. Yale's "Bibliography of American Literature" etc.), bibliographies on Modernism, genre bibliographies, annual reviews, and -- using many of the previously mentioned authors as examples -- "Modernist Author Bibliographies."

Chapter 5 is an annotated descriptive bibliography of scholarly journals of the Modernist era and "General Twentieth-Century and American Literature Journals."

In Chapter 6, the authors focus on how students can identify and locate book reviews, literary criticism, and author-specific bibliographies. Again, some of the same authors previously mentioned are used as examples.

Chapters 7, 8 and 9 are devoted to: helping students locate useful information in newspapers and periodicals that "attained wider circulation in American households" during this period; identify useful archival collections and work with primary source materials; and, how to best utilize the Web for e-mail lists, bulletin boards, open-access journals, and author-specific Web sites.

Matuozzi and Lindsay close with a chapter titled "Researching a Thorny Problem," to illustrate how one might go about researching the life and works of Nella Larsen, a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance; and, an Appendix that serves as a brief, annotated descriptive bibliography of sources in related disciplines that might be of assistance to literary scholars of the American Moderist Era.

While I would have liked to have seen more author-specific examples and a uniform use of these same authors of the period throughout the text, I also recognize that doing so would have made the book much longer and nearly impossible to complete. Author Larsen has created a sort of concordance that provides glosses on all of the allusions and topical references that appear in the taped episodes as well as the stage directions and scene descriptions in the printed scripts. Arrangement is by episode, from 1 to 44; and terms, spoken phrases, or names for each episode are alphabetically arranged. Quotations appear in quote marks, while other kinds of terms are italicized. The abbreviation PSC (printed script commentary) identifies terms that come directly from the printed scripts. When relevant, Larsen provides the name of the sketch with which the terms is associated and the folder number from the BBC’s Written Archive Collection. The volume concludes with a bibliography, a general index, and an “Index of Monty Python’s Flying Circus Extras and Walk-Ons (As Scheduled).” Although casual fans will enjoy browsing through the book, it is really designed for well-versed readers. Except in the form of brief entries in each episode chapter (for example, the entry for Episode 13 in the “Episode 13” chapter), no background information or summaries are provided because, as explained in the introduction, “it’s assumed the reader has seen the episode in question.” The index also demands a certain level of knowledge, because it has no cross-references, so readers will need to know to look under “Dead Parrot” rather than parrot. One Catastrophic Flaw

This book, per the title, purports to be a "guide," not an "encyclopedia." I had mulled over this purchase for many months, balking at the hefty price tag, but finally decided to buy it for myself as a holiday gift. I was encouraged by the knowledge that this guide split its references up by episode. The idea I had in mind was to revisit each episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus in turn, using this book in its titular capacity as a guide for the kind of topical and elaborative information it promised to provide.

The information is certainly there. Here is the problem: The author elected to provide each episode's list of references in alphabetical order, rather than chronological. Consider this for a moment. In this book, each episode is allowed, on average, ten pages full of references and tidbits of information. Episode 1 is twenty pages long, with over 140 entries. If the scope of this disaster is not already apparent, then let me offer the titles of some of the entries for episode 1: "Awful," "caption," "Gilliam's wonderfully visual mind," "Man," "squawk," and even "Episode 1." All of these entries are dutifully arranged in alphabetical order. It is easy to see how hopeless this system is. The only contextual relevance each entry retains is its association with the single episode in question, and therefore the only possible use any of the entries can serve is to someone who has recently watched the full episode and remembers every last detail, especially including the various obscurities which this book was meant to help with. How else could one be expected to make use of episode 1's entry on "Miro," for example?

Let's consider what purpose was meant to be served by using the contextually bankrupt alphabet as an organizational tool. There is only one answer: Reference. So the author was seeking to make it easy for the reader to find specific items, per specific episode. It is undeniably a good idea to permit some means of reference in a book such as this. However, it doesn't need to be pointed out that for such specific cases, an index at the back of the book suffices nicely, and indeed, this book has such an index. Meanwhile, how does one justify entries such as "Episode 1" or "Gilliam's wonderfully visual mind" in terms of reference? Such entries only make sense as contextual information, to be presented, one would hope, within a chronology, at appropriate moments, e.g. with "Episode 1" near the very beginning of the list, and "Gilliam's wonderfully visual mind" at around the point in the episode, relative to the other entries, when we first witness Terry Gilliam's handiwork.

As impressed as I am with how thorough and erudite the actual entries are, I must stress how deeply disappointing it is that I cannot use this rather pricey book in its intended capacity as a guide to the television series. I have tried. Too much time was spent wondering whether or not there might be something I could look up - and indeed being confounded by the entries' titles themselves. For example, "Man" is in fact an entry providing information on "the 'It's' Man," and I completely overlooked this entry until the episode was over and I read the entire chapter to see what I missed. Can one imagine how much more useful that entry would have been had it been placed near the front of the chapter (as the 'It's' Man appears at the very beginning of episode 1), perhaps even with a timecode helper (00h 00m 00s)?

I recommend that this book be updated to present all information chronologically. The index already exists. If the author had some purpose beyond reference for organizing everything alphabetically, I submit that the advantages of chronological order far outweigh whatever nebulous intent was behind the redundant and confounding structure the book currently uses, and would make the book very accessible and useful, which it currently is not.

Bush’s biography is deeply informed by his background as a music journalist specializing in acoustic music. He digs into the business and professional life of the group, drawing on primary resources by relying largely on interviews with the surviving members of the Trio and with those who knew them. The greatest strength of this book, by far, is the ready access the author had to his subjects and the lengthy interviews that illuminate numerous issues in the Trio’s tumultuous history. Another aspect of this biography that is especially welcome is the attention paid to the Trio’s various bassists, who were often at least as, if not more, musically sophisticated than the Trio members themselves (e.g., p. 88 on David 'Bucky' Wheat). . . .This book is an important contribution to the history of the folk revival, and deserves a place in any comprehensive music collection. A Phenomenal and Comprehensive Biography

This book does a phenomenal job of elevating the importance of The Kingston Trio and clearly establishing them as the most talented, original, and influential American musical group in history. In spite of the perception that they were little more than a laid-back folk trio who just happened to be at the right place at the right time, Greenback Dollar shows all these guys were serious performers and musicians from an early age, and that their musical knowledge and influences was so extensive blending folk, jazz, Hawaiian with a Mariachi instrumental sound and harmonies, that as Bob Shane says late in the book, their music was not folk music at all, but world music. The book details that the magic of the Trio was that they produced records and gave performances that made them and their music accessible, yet no one else was ever able to come close to capturing their energy or sound.

As someone who has followed the Trio since I was eight years old I was skeptical that a 2013 biography could add much to what I already knew about the group, especially since all but original member Bob Shane have been dead for so long. However it is clear Bush has been researching this book since at least 1986, and he has done extensive interviews with not only all the Trio members, but virtually every important person connected with them from the time they were born through today. This is a well-written and insightful book and will be a delight to not only to KINGSTON TRIO fans, but a good source of inspiration for anyone who really wants to know what it takes to have a successful music career.

My only complaint is that this book is not available as an e-Book. I spent several hours carefully cutting the book apart and then scanning it into a PDF file so I could read it on my iPad.

A great read about America's best (in my opinion) folk group

Like one of the earlier reviewers, I've been a fan of the Kingston Trio since 1958, when I was 8 years old and "Tom Dooley" hit the airwaves. I've loved every album they recorded (and that is a LOT of albums) and still play them to this day. While many other folk groups seem to be remembered fondly because they were more "political," the Kingston Trio never attempted to be overtly political nor did they try to capitalize on what was "politically correct" at the time. They concentrated on their music and entertaining, and as founding member Bob Shane has often said, they were entertainers first and foremost. Because of this, they often got a bum rap from the "purist" folk community. This never bothered me all these years, because who cares? Their music was (and still IS) just so damn good! They put more heart and soul into their music, in my view, than most of the politically correct folk groups whose music was never as entertaining. The Kingston Trio's music was truly some of the first "world" music, with songs coming from the American West and South, Appalachia, Polynesia, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Britain, Ireland... it's incredible, when you think about it. They worked hard, played hard and their concerts and recordings rang with emotion, truly from the heart.

These are some of the themes that Bill Bush explores in this meticulously researched and lovingly written history of what is arguably America's most influential folk group. Bill clearly has nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for these guys, yet is not afraid to show them as the all-too-human folks that they are, just like all the rest of us. This kind of writing requires a delicate balance, and Bill nails it somehow. I have always thought it a pity that so little has been written about the Kingston Trio over the years, so this wonderful book is a most welcome addition to the music literature. It is entertaining from start to finish--I read the whole thing in about two sittings. Highly recommended, and thanks Bill, for filling a big gap in the literature of America's musical heritage.

Long Overdue

This book is a must for Trio fans. In fact it's a must for anyone seriously interested in music between 1957 and 1967. The wealth of information - well footnoted - is first quality. The depth of the information is astounding. These four fellas trusted Bill Bush explicitly. We are the richer for it. The book is well written and non Hagiographic. A fitting center of a Kingston Trio collection.
