The book was a great disappointment and it appears Fielding chose too broad of a topic and slapped it together. The title is lack luster, though the idea draws you in. I would not consider this a scholar level book. It seems it would be better suited in a rambling blog post somewhere.

This third entry in the retired Stanford theater professor’s “Blood on the Stage” series is preceded by volumes on 1900–1925 and 1925–1950 (Scarecrow, 2008 and 2009, respectively). Not intended as an anthology, this is a chronological guide to notable plays from the period. Along with a plot synopsis, Kabatchnik gives a brief history of the play, including interesting circumstances of its creation, its critical reception, its later performances and film adaptations, and a biography of the playwright(s). His definition of “plays of crime, mystery, and detection” is surprisingly broad, listing obvious choices—mysteries such as Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap (1952) and courtroom dramas like Meyer Levin’s Compulsion (1957)—but also two adaptations of Dracula, musicals (Lionel Bart’s 1960 Oliver!), and “literary” works (Arthur Miller’s 1953 The Crucible). The book’s wide scope and context make it useful for research; its clear and straightforward writing engaging for casual perusal. The entries are concise enough to browse easily, and the variety offers up surprises that a simple Internet search might miss.

The third volume of this monumental reference work lives up to the high standard of the first two. Defining crime and mystery as broadly as Otto Penzler (who considers a mystery any story involving a crime or the threat of a crime), Kabatchnik begins chronologically with the Damon Runyon-inspired musical Guys and Dolls, book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows in service of Frank Loesser’s music and lyrics, and finishes with Graham Greene’s The Return of A.J. Raffles with over a hundred other stops along the way....A typical entry, running from two or three to over ten pages, includes a synopsis (surprise solution included), critical response, production history, biographies of the playwright and (in the case of adaptations) author of the original work, availability of acting edition, awards and honors if any, and notes. Appendices on plays concerning poison, courtroom drama, death row, and children in peril span the whole 20th Century and repeat material from earlier volumes, while providing additional information and corrections. The 23-page index covers personal names and titles.

As a lover of the theatre and a devotee of suspense literature I found Amnon Kabatchnik's reference books "Blood on the Stage, 1900-1925" and "Blood on the Stage, 1925-1950" invaluable as well as enjoyable. I became familiar with long-lost melodramas, whodunits, psychological thrillers and courtroom dramas, and I was amazed to discover among the playwrights who dabbled in crime-and-punishment not only such "regulars" as Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Mary Roberts Rinehart, Earl Derr Biggers and Edgar Wallace, but also authors of the main stream, including J.M. Synge, John Galsworthy, Eugene O'Neill, Elmer Rice, Bertolt Brecht, Jean-Paul Sartre, Somerset Maugham, A.A. Milne, J.B. Priestley, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, many others. Among the surprises are plays by Ayn Rand, Mae West and George M. Cohan.

Now comes the third in the series, "Blood on the Stage, 1950-1975," and I find it to be a worthy successor. The book's 684 pages cover more than 120 entries - each with a plot synopsis, production data, reviews, and mini-biographies of the playwrights, directors and actors. I was delighted to find descriptions and evaluations of Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap," Frederick Knott's "Dial `M' for Murder," Ouida Rathbone's "Sherlock Holmes" (written for her husband Basil), James Baldwin's "Blues for Mr. Charlie," Anthony Shaffer's "Sleuth," Peter Shaffer's "Equus," Joe Orton's "Loot," Tom Stoppard's "The Real Inspector Hound," John Osborne's "The Picture of Dorian Gray," Graham Greene's grim "The Potting Shed" and humorous "The Return of A.J. Raffles."

Several musicals are included: "Guys and Dolls," "West Side Story," Redhead," Oliver!," "Baker Street," "Something's Afoot." Comedies in the genre include Alec Coppel's "The Gazebo," Jules Feiffer's "The White House Murder Case" and Woody Allen's "Don't Drink the Water." Main stream authors who inked their pens with blood include William Faulkner, Arthur Miller, Herman Wouk, and Gore Vidal.

Altogether, a hefty, nostalgic, illuminating, and entertaining volume.

Using the text of The Riverside Shakespeare (2d ed., 1997), edited by G. About the Author
Mark F. Gilbert is associate professor of contemporary European history at the University of Trento in Italy, as well as adjunct professor at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies in Bologna and visiting research fellow of the Department of History, Birkbeck College, University of London. He became a fellow of the Royal Historical Society in June 2005.

K. Robert Nilsson established the Center for International Studies in Bologna, which was posthumously renamed in 2000 as the K. Robert Nilsson Center for European Studies. He was also chairman of the Italy Seminar at the Foreign Service Institute of the Department of State and was editor of the newsletter of the Conference Group on Italian Politics and Society.

Part of the American Folk Music and Musicians series, the subtitle of this latest release indicates the tilt taken toward the serious scholarly study of traditional music. With chapter contributions by musicologists, ethnologists, and professors of folklore and anthropology, the book focuses on both the individuals who gathered folk songs as well as the regions and cultures from which the music originated. Chronologically, the time period covered is the first half of the twentieth century. Topically, musical traditions such as cowboy and other occupational songs are presented, but most of the classification is by region—the Ozarks, the Midwest, and Eastern Canada, among others. A number of chapters focus on individual song collectors, such as the well-known anthropologist Franz Boas and the father-son folklorist team of John and Alan Lomax. The opening chapter of the volume provides context by discussing what motivated collectors to begin accumulating folk songs and other traditional forms of music and what impact these individuals and their collections had and continue to have on the scholarly study of this music. Each chapter is about 20 pages in length and written in an accessible style that does not require any prior familiarity with the subject area. This volume is heavily referenced, with around 50 endnotes per chapter. This scholarly approach is of great value to the user who wishes to pursue further study, but, it should also be noted, is atypical of traditional reference sources....Ballad Collectors is not a “quick and dirty” resource but, rather, one that requires some investment of time on the part of the user.
