Encyclopedia of Sports Films, by K Edgington, Thomas Erskine, James M. Welsh

Whether chronicling an athlete's rise, fall, and redemption or following a team's improbable triumph on the field, sports have been a favorite theme of filmmakers almost since movies were first produced. And whether focusing on soccer (Bend It Like Beckham), boxing (Rocky and its sequels), hockey (Slap Shot), baseball (Bull Durham), football (The Longest Yard), basketball (Hoosiers), cycling (Breaking Away), or tennis (Wimbledon), such films capture the competition and thrill of sport. All major films with a primary focus on athletic endeavor are contained in Encyclopedia of Sports Films. In this volume, more than 200 fictional feature-length movies released between 1925 and 2010 are described, including comedies, dramas, and biopics. While the focus is on Hollywood productions, independent films and foreign releases are also represented. Though boxing and baseball films have tended to dominate the genre, many other sports are also included here, including skiing, curling, and cricket.

Arranged alphabetically by title, each main entry contains a synopsis of the film, principal production information, and a critical analysis. In addition to the main entries, credits and brief descriptions for more than 200 films are also provided. DVD and VHS distributors are included, if available. Appendixes include made-for-television movies, documentaries, and films based on or inspired by true events and persons. For teachers who wish to incorporate films into their lesson plans, as well as librarians ordering titles for their patrons, Encyclopedia of Sports Films will be a valuable resource.

Review
Edgington (English, Towson Univ.) and Erskine and Welsh (cofounders, Literature/Film Quarterly) have produced a specialized encyclopedia describing sports films across categories such as silent films, prominent directors, independent productions, major hits, and obscure movies. Each film entry identifies production crew (from director to costume designer), cast members, running time, and available format (DVD and/or VHS). This information is followed by film synopses and relatively brief evaluations. The oldest film is The Freshman (1925), produced by and starring the successful comic Harold Lloyd and featuring action sequences performed by members of the University of Southern California football team. Coverage extends through 2010. There are six appendixes: films by sport, a chronological title list, movies made for television or direct to video, movies inspired or based upon actual events, sports documentaries, and ESPY Awards for best sports movies. These are followed by a bibliography, index, and information about the authors....BOTTOM LINE By providing film synopses and evaluations, Edgington and team have developed an engaging encyclopedia that should appeal to individuals interested in film studies, sports, and the history of popular culture. Recommended for film reference collections. (Library Journal)

Intending “to present a representative sample of the range of films that have been classified as sports films,” this encyclopedia covers more than 400 movies, excluding documentaries; films not readily available; made-for-TV movies (with a few exceptions); and films about dog shows, academic or intellectual contests such as spelling bees or chess, and bullfighting. Beginning with early examples like The Freshman (1925), coverage continues to the remake of The Karate Kid in 2010. Each entry starts with a boxed listing of credits, run time, and availability in either DVD or VHS. More than 200 films, such as the Marx Brothers’ Day at the Races and all the Rocky films, receive expanded treatment that provides some commentary on plots and themes as well as a detailed plot summary. Other entries consist of the box and a one- to two-sentence summary. Some black-and-white photographs are included. Six appendixes follow the A–Z entries: “Films by Sport,” “Chronological Title List,” “Movies Made for Television or Direct to Video,” “Movies Inspired By or Based Upon Actual Events,” “Sports Documentaries,” and “ESPY Awards for Best Sports Movie.” A bibliography of books and articles precedes the index. This work is a valuable addition to public and academic libraries with an interest in either sports or films. The appendixes identifying movies by sport and those based on actual events will help anyone looking for movies on specific sports or “true” stories. (Booklist)

Teachers use sports films in the classroom as an instructional tool, and scholars generally agree that depictions of sports in film can serve to reinforce cultural values in powerful ways. This encyclopedia by Edgington (Towson Univ., Baltimore) and Erskine and Welsh (cofounders, Literature/Film Quarterly) covers all major films with a primary focus on athletic endeavor. It describes more than 200 fictional feature-length movies released between 1925 and 2010, including comedies, dramas, and biopics. Though it features primarily Hollywood productions, it includes independent films and foreign releases. The authors exclude documentaries, films not readily available in VHS/DVD format at the time of publication, and made-for-television movies, except for a few exceptional titles. Despite the dominance of boxing, football, basketball, and baseball films in the genre, this volume discusses many other sports, including auto racing, skiing, and soccer. Arranged alphabetically by title, each main entry presents a synopsis of the film, principal production information, and a critical analysis. Entries for minor films have one-sentence synopses. The authors, who clearly are film aficionados, offer very well-written synopses that provide insights beyond the superficial. Summing Up: Recommended. All libraries; lower-division undergraduates and above, and general readers. (CHOICE)

This book cruises through 100 years of just about any sport you can think of that’s been committed to film. Whether it involves travelling at fast speeds in motorised or pedal-powered vehicles to opponent match encounters, is team or mano-a-mano based or rain, shine, snow, sky and water-based, all sports are covered. (Filmwerk 2011-09-01)

This work provides a much needed update to the study of sports films, covering more than 20 years of film releases that have appeared since the publication of Sports Films: A Complete Reference. It is accessible, affordable, and handsomely illustrated with black and white film stills. Encyclopedia of Sports Films would be a fine addition to any public or academic library. (Reference Reviews)

This is an informative work on sports films that have a story line focusing on an athletic endeavor. The main emphasis is on Hollywood productions, with significant independent and foreign releases mixed intermittently. Documentaries have been excluded from the full entry list, as well as most made-for-television movies, yet dedicated appendixes for selected works in these genres are included in the back. Other appendixes, such as films based on actual events, a chronological list of sports films, and ESPY awards, are also included. (American Reference Books Annual)

Encyclopedia of Sports Films consists of detailed synopses and production credits for some 200 narrative films that place sports, athletes, or competition in the foreground. This is the only reference work of its kind to span as wide a range of film history, from 1925’s The Freshman to the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid, while providing immediate access to significant film titles by sport. Encyclopedia authors Edington, Erskine, and Welsh make the wise choice to sacrifice comprehensiveness for salience and impact, selecting representative works and considering them at length. Historical Dictionary of the Old South (Historical Dictionaries of U.S. Politics and Political Eras), by William L. Richter

The South played a prominent role in early American history, and its position was certainly strong and proud except for the “peculiar institution” of slavery. Thus, it drew away from the rest of an expanding nation, and in 1861 declared secession and developed a Confederacy… that ultimately lost the war. Indeed, for some time it was occupied. Thus, the South has a very mixed legacy, with good and bad aspects, and sometimes the two of them mixed. Which only enhances the need for a careful and balanced approach.

This can be found in the Historical Dictionary of the Old South, which first traces its history from colonial times to the end of the Civil War in a substantial chronology. Particularly interesting is the introduction, which analyzes the rise and the fall, the good and the bad, as well as the middling and indifferent, over nigh on two centuries. The details are filled in very amply in over 600 dictionary entries on the politics, economy, society and culture of the Old South. An ample bibliography directs students and researchers toward other sources of information.

Review
In this volume, the second edition of the title, “Old South” refers to presecession South (1790–1861). Richter, who is referred to in the foreword as an “academically trained historian” retired from “his own horseshoeing business,” has written other volumes on the topic, including the first edition of this title. The volume offers a chronology, an introduction (which serves as a historical overview and an explanation of the author’s standpoint), 600 brief alphabetically arranged entries, and a bibliography. Coverage includes a range of topics including people, economics, politics, law, society, and culture. Standout features include the introduction, which is truly a helpful historical overview of the Old South and in and of itself an excellent reference article. Greenwood’s 2000 title Encyclopedia of the Antebellum South may suffice in libraries where this topic gets little traffic, but it does not cover as broad a time frame and focuses more specifically on social history. Verdict Recommended for larger collections and where there is a need, especially in libraries that lack the first edition. Likely a must for southern institutions. (Library Journal)

Scarecrow Press are onto a good thing. American history provides an endless series of topics and sub-topics around which you can construct onevolume Historical Dictionaries so they will never run out of raw material. The Old South is a prime example of this because if ever a region had a separate identity, the South was it. Its climate of sultry humidity, its slave-based social system, its values of 'honour' and gentility and its cotton and rice economy all marked it off from the rest of the USA. ... The book strikes a good balance between biographical entries and the rest: wars, laws, crises and revolts, political groupings, economic activity, social institutions, judicial decisions and Indian tribes. (Reference Reviews)

The Historical Dictionaries series by Scarecrow Press are universally excellent sources and this 2d edition is no exception. William L. Richter, professional historian and retired Arizona cowboy, starts with a definition of the Old South. To him it is geographical, chronological, and cultural—a particular section of the United States from the end of the American Revolutionary War through the Civil War that developed a unique culture largely defined by the institution of slavery. In the rest of a most useful introduction, the author outlines the various political, social, cultural, and economic questions that constitute the heart of the historiography of this region. The alphabetically arranged dictionary is extensive, cross-listed, and well written; many entries have touches of humor. The chronology is valuable and the lengthy bibliographic essay that precedes an exhaustive topical listed bibliography is the single best feature of the volume. Appropriate appendixes include U.S. governments during the Antebellum Era, 1790-1861; U.S. and Confederate Governments during the Civil War, 1861-1865; the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, 1781; and the Constitutions of the U.S. in 1860 and the Confederate States of American, 1861. In sum, this volume . . . is a good addition to most university libraries. (American Reference Books Annual)

About the Author
William L. Richter has researched and written extensively in the area of the Antebellum South, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. He is the author of several books including the Historical Dictionary of the Civil War and Reconstruction, second edition (Scarecrow 2011).

Historical Dictionary of Wrestling (Historical Dictionaries of Sports), by John Grasso

Wrestling as a legitimate contest is one of the oldest, if not the oldest form of sport. There are cave drawings in France that depict memorable matches, which are over 15,000 years old. Egyptian and Babylonian reliefs depict wrestling bouts where wrestlers are using most of the holds known to the modern-day sport. Wrestling was also a big part of ancient Greek literature and legend and historical records of sport indicate that wrestling under various sets of rules was contested at the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece. Today’s modern wrestling is a form of "sports entertainment" in which highly skilled athletes enact wrestling matches in such a way so that their opponents do not get hurt and the matches' endings are scripted (although the audience is not aware of the script).

This Historical Dictionary of Wrestling covers the history of Wrestling through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important amateur and professional wrestling, wrestling personalities, announcers, managers and promoters from all eras, and wrestling organizations. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the sport of Wrestling.

Review
An opening chronology covers 708 BCE (wrestling added to the Olympics) to 2013 (wrestling dropped from, then reinstated to the Olympics; Wrestlemania 29). The introduction goes into more detail, alternating between sport and sports entertainment (e.g., "20th-Century Amateur Wrestling--1920-1948"; "20th-Century Professional Wrestling--Post-World War II"). . . .Dictionary entries range from a few lines to two pages and include people (e.g., Gorgeous George; Vincent K. McMahon; Dan Gable), organizations (e.g., World Wrestling Entertainment; Amateur Athletic Union), terms (e.g., lucha libre; kayfabe; featherweight). Entries give basic biographical information, titles held, postretirement activities, and occasional odd asides. . . .[R]esearchers in need of a reputable source to cite for basic data have it here. Cross-references and see/see also references are provided. The many appendixes include lists of champions for amateur wrestling, and real and ring names for professional wrestling. The bibliography may be useful for researchers. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and general readers. (CHOICE)

Wrestling in its pure form—at the high school, college, and Olympic levels—is an exciting, unpredictable, and very competitive sport. Monday night wrestling, or 'wraslin' is not. There is a reason for the 'E' in World Wrestling Entertainment. It is all about entertainment and this latest volume in the publisher’s Historical Dictionaries of Sports reflects the scripted version of wrestling. Although various wrestling holds, moves, and history are included, Grasso’s work is more about Monday Night Raw and other professional organizations—the televised versions. Readers will find out more about Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, and Bret Harte than wrestling in its amateur form. The dictionary is an alphabetic listing of who, what, and when with a chronology, abbreviation list, and brief introduction included. Eleven appendixes document various features such as nicknames, hall of fame wrestlers, and prominent pay-per-view WWE events. There are references to NCAA champions and Olympic wrestling but the heavy emphasis is clearly the hulking athletes and entertainers who come alive on weekly television and now the newly launched WWE network. (American Reference Books Annual)

Wrestler's biographies in all their glory.
By B. Wolinsky
More like an encyclopedia than a dictionary, this book has short biographies of all the great professional wrestlers, from the early years to present. The writing is unbiased, and it sticks to the facts; the wrestler’s origins, the start of his career, his signature moves, and his career after wrestling. My only fault with the book is that there’s a limit to how much information you can fit in here. Some of the wrestlers had unusual careers, and they could be turned into full length biographies. I will recommend it to fans of pro wrestling who want quick access to information on the wrestlers.

Historical Dictionary of Rococo Art (Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts), by Jennifer D. Milam

The Rococo emerged in France around 1700 as a playful revolt against the grandeur of the Baroque and the solemnity of Classicism. It flourished during the reign of Louis XV and began to go out of fashion in the second half of the 18th century. During this brief period of less than a century, it spread throughout the courts and cities of Europe, with significant regional variations on the style developing in Bavaria, Potsdam, Venice, and Great Britain. The period produced an extraordinary number of artistic innovators, who challenged received conventions, developed novel subject categories, and eroded hierarchical distinctions between the arts.

The Historical Dictionary of Rococo Art covers all aspects of Rococo art history through a chronology, an introductory essay, a review of the literature, an extensive bibliography, and over 350 cross-referenced dictionary entries on prominent Rococo painters, sculptors, decorative artists, architects, patrons, theorists, and critics, as well as major centers of artistic production. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Rococo art.

From Booklist
This entry in the Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts series provides detailed information about the who, what, why, when, and how of rococo art, covering the period from 1700 to 1789. Originating in France as a revolt against the staidness of the classical era, rococo emphasized playfulness and dramatic flourishes. Author Milam is an associate professor of art history at the University of Sydney, specializing in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European art. The dictionary begins with helpful introductory information—a chronology and an overview of rococo art, including definitions, origins, and style. The more than 350 entries are arranged alphabetically and include cross-references in bold type. Each entry—short historical essays ranging from a few paragraphs to several pages—is written in a concise, accurate, and clear style that doesn’t require much advanced knowledge of rococo art. Topics covered include terminology, artists, critics, patrons, art pieces, architecture, and more. The comprehensive bibliography will be useful for leading the reader to additional sources. Although the volume does not contain any illustrations—definitely odd for a book on visual art—it will be useful for anyone interested in the historical context of rococo. Recommended for academic and large public libraries as well as art-museum libraries. --William Garrett

Review
Milam (art history & film studies, Univ. of Sydney, Australia) deftly explains the geographical centers, art dealers, state figures, practitioners, techniques, substyles, and concepts defining the rococo period....The well-written, thoroughly researched text... includes all European and American stylistic permutations. Alphabetized entries are carefully explained and cross-referenced for additional clarification. Also vital are a chronology of style-relevant historical events and a 25-page introduction that defines rococo’s stylistic hallmarks and implications. An important guide for art history collections. (Library Journal)

Milam (Univ. of Sydney, Australia) offers a well-written volume on rococo, a movement generally considered to have started in France at the tail end of Louis XIV's reign and continued to the beginnings of the French Revolution. The introduction and chronology place the rococo movement firmly in historical context. Milam is careful to designate the scope of the dictionary and demarcate why certain subject matter is included or excluded. While seminal works such as Fiske Kimball's The Creation of the Rococo (1943) or William Parks's The Idea of Rococo (CH, Dec'93, 31-1917) provide in-depth historical and ideological contexts for the rococo movement, the short, easily digested entries of this dictionary allow students and researchers to navigate the aforementioned works with confidence and ease. For both undergraduate and graduate researchers, it is a well-informed starting point for further research. The bibliography is a useful scholarly resource that includes contemporary works on rococo and information on where to find images of the works discussed. Information on databases and website resources guides students and researchers to other scholarship. Milam also provides suggestions for worldwide art collections that represent the rococo style. It is a treasure for undergraduate and graduate researchers....Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through researchers/faculty. (CHOICE)

The fact that the subject matter is historically a more limited phenomenon (shorter timeframe: 1700-1789) and that the author, Milam, teaches a university course specifically about this topic, is evident in the way the volume has been written. The author has a firm grasp on the material and gives a confident in-depth treatment of the movement, including, besides most of Europe, the American colonies. There is also a very interesting introduction that can even function on its own as an overview. (Art Libraries Journal)

Historical Dictionary of Rococo Art is highly recommended as a reference work in this specialized area of art history, and will be of use to the beginning as well as the expert researcher of art history. The book has an excellent annotated chronology of Rococo history, as well as a significant essay on the entire Rococo period and its various styles and variations throughout Europe. . . . Overall, Historical Dictionary of Rococo Art is a fairly comprehensive dictionary on the Rococo art period. (American Reference Books Annual)

such a disappointment!
By S. H. LEE
A dictionary of art with a single picture: the one on the cover! Is it enough for such a price?
Is the text actually justifying it? Such a dictionary should be written by a team not a single writer.
The author seems to know well French art, so about half of the 300 entries are linked to. But no entry for painters like Delaporte, Doyen, Hallé, Largillière, Lépicié, Pierre, Pillement, Restout, Quillard or Subleyras, no entry for sculptors like Adam, Caffieri, Clodion, R. Le Lorrain, Pajou or Slodtz… And where is the name of the goldsmith Germain family?
But other countries are not so lucky. How could one explain that German art has quite the same number of entries than Spanish art (about 20 (!) for every country) when it appears easy to define rococo in Germany but difficult for Spain? And no entry for Wies, Dresden (but one for Zwinger) or Augsburg, quite no name of any German ornementalist, engraver, painter or stuccoist and very few sculptors!
Concerning Spanish art, there is nothing on the Murcia Cathedral, the Palace of Marqués de Dos Aguas in Valencia, the altar-maker Cayetano Acosta in Sevilla, Francisco Xavier Pedraxas (active in Priego of Córdoba and Granada) and (why not if one include Asam Brothers from Munich?) Narciso Tomé and his Transparente in Toledo Cathedral! There is an entry for Portugal but it’s nothing when one forget to mention the rococo of the North (especially around Braga) and gilded woodcarving (Wikipedia is better in that point!). And that’s all for Iberian world because the entry for “American” Rococo is about "U. S." rococo and there is absolutely nothing on Latin America. What about Pedro Joseph de Roxas, Ignacio Mariano de las Casa and the Querétaro Style? What about the Brazilian sculptor and architect called Aleijadinho and the region of Ouro Preto? Has the author really read the books by Smith and Delaforce (on Portugal) or by Kubler & Soria (on Spain, Portugal and Latin America) she cites in Bibliography?
I thought that Central and East European world wasn’t so poor in Rococo art! You can’t find even the name of Maulbertsch, the great "Austrian" painter of rococo, or the one of master Pinzel, the great "Ukrainian" sculptor. And what about Rastrelli in Russia?
It’s difficult to define Italian rococo but why entries for Della Bella and Bernini when the author absolutely ignores Piazetta and Fra Galgario and don’t give an entry to Ricci? Why Juvarra and not Vittone?
Last but nor least, I’ve just counted 309 actual entries, not the "over 350" mentionned.
Such a disappointment...

Death and Dying: An Annotated Bibliography of the Thanatological Literature, by John F. Szabo

While it can be traced to the 1700s, the term thanatology has gained traction in recent decades to refer to the study of death. Because of the breadth of the published material and the challenges of discovery in large bibliographic databases and catalogs, finding and identifying monographic material on death, dying, grief, and bereavement can be extremely challenging. Although there have been several bibliographical resources published on thanatology, those titles were incomplete, limited in scope, or leaned heavily toward one area of the field.

In Death and Dying: An Annotated Bibliography of the Thanatological Literature, John F. Szabo provides more than 2,200 citations of monographs on the science and study of death and dying. Among the areas this volume addresses are the psychological, philosophical, and attitudinal aspects; coping and dealing with the burdens of caregiving and working in the helping professions; instructional and educational topics for practitioners, primarily health care providers; cultural differences in bereavement rituals; and grief, mourning, and loss. In addition, notable titles on or relating to death and dying in popular culture, death themes in literature, methods of death, or specific ethical, policy, or public issues are also included when they contribute important information to subject areas on which the book focuses. This book will be helpful to students, researchers, academics, caregivers, health care professionals, psychologists, social workers, and anyone with an interest in death, dying, bereavement, or the care of the terminally ill.

Born to Play: The Ruby Braff Discography and Directory of Performances (Studies in Jazz), by Thomas P. Hustad

Jazz trombonist Jack Teagarden once referred to Ruby Braff as the “Ivy League's Louis Armstrong.” That legacy of great trumpet performance and recording is brought to readers in Thomas Hustad’s Born to Play: The Ruby Braff Discography and Directory of Performances. Braff’s uncompromising standards, musical taste, and creative imagination informed his consummate artistry in creating music beautifully played. He achieved swiftly what few musicians accomplish in a lifetime by developing a unique and immediately recognizable style. For a reminder of that we need but play any of the more than 150 released recordings on which he appears. These records span a total of 54 years, from 1949 to 2002, a feat almost unmatched in jazz recording. This was five years longer than even Louis Armstrong.

Although prepared in discographical style, capturing information about both commercial recordings and previously undocumented performances, Born to Play serves as a biography of the artist, detailing the path he paved as a performer and featuring personal recollections of his musical career with commentary from other figures. Images over the course of his half century of playing fill out this comprehensive survey of Braff's performing and recording career. This bio-discography of the man who jazz drumming legend Buddy Rich declared “one of my favorite trumpeters” and singing giant Tony Bennett described as “my great friend who now holds the reigning position of the best cornet player in the world” is sure to be of interest to jazz fans and scholars alike.

Review
In this discography of jazz trumpeter Ruby Braff (1927-2003), Hustad intends to make all of Braff's extensive recording history available in one easy-to-use resource. Braff is known for his unique style and for having one of the longest recording histories in jazz history—from 1949-2002. In that span of 54 years Braff played on more than 105 released recordings. The book is first and foremost a discography of Braff's commercial and undocumented performances, with many of the entries providing extensive annotations. The book also serves as a biography to Braff's life as it provides details of the musician's life as a performer and includes personal memories from others in the field. The 22 chapters are names to indicate various periods of Braff's life and career; for example, "Ruby's Growing Jazz Stardom," "Tony Bennett and the New York Club," and "Ruby's Final Tour: Honoring His Audience until the End." The work concludes with an appendix of album notes, and musician and song indexes. This volume is a valuable addition to this series and will be a worthwhile purchase for academic and large public libraries. (American Reference Books Annual)

A fascinating document, invaluable not only for those who regarded Ruby as one of the marvels of jazz — it is also a chronicle of one man’s fierce determination to create beauty in a world that sometimes seemed oblivious to it. Many large-scale works of scholarship are thorough but cold, and the reader feels the chill. Others have adulation intrude on the purpose of the work. Tom Hustad’s book is an ideal mixture of scholarship, diligence, and warm affection: its qualities in an admirable balance. I think the only way this book could have been improved would have been for Ruby to continue on past 2002 and the book to follow him. (Jazz Lives)

Hustad’s dedication to documenting the life and music of Ruby Braff has earned him a special place in the writing of jazz history. Yes, he gives us the facts, lots of them, but it is the picture that we find in Hustad’s commentary of this complex and uniquely talented man of principle whom he could truly call a friend that makes this volume special. Anyone with a taste for good music cannot help but be affected by the musical genius of Ruby Braff, and Hustad has gone a long way to making us understand that this was a man who had a lot of natural talent, but it was the inner forces that drove him to the top of his field.
(Jersey Jazz)

Born to Play is another noteworthy volume in the highly acclaimed Studies In Jazz series…Quite simply that means that this book meets all criteria as an authoritative jazz discography and reference work for all time. Personally I can say that since I have purchased this book I have spent many enjoyable hours checking my record shelves and searching for missing items on the internet. Recommendation-wise this one deserves 5 stars all around! (The IAJRC Journal)

As far as I know Tom Hustad’s book is unique in jazz literature. There have been famous and worthy attempts at day-by-day books on Goodman, Henderson and Ellington, but thanks to modern technology and Hustad’s assiduous pursuit of his subject, none to rival this one. Because everything about Ruby was so vivid, the book, read in conjunction with listening to his music, brings Ruby back to life in an almost supernatural way. (Jazz Journal)

Thomas P. Hustad’s exhaustive book attempts to document not only every known record date, but also every broadcast, private recording, performance and interview, a seemingly impossible task. The author also collected and reviewed many of the unissued performances. Hustad’s research includes interview transcriptions, excerpts of previously published reviews and articles, along with period advertisements for bookings, all meticulously footnoted. The result is a comprehensive, critical look at Braff’s career....Hustad’s book is not a fast read, but one that serious Ruby Braff fans will savor as they learn new facets of his career and seek out additional LPs, CDs and broadcasts featuring him that circulate among collectors. (The New York City Jazz Record)

Hustad’s book is much more than a compilation of recording session information and performance dates and locations, for interspersed with that data are biographical information, excerpts from reviews, and commentary by the author. For the Braff admirer — count me among them! — the volume serves not only as an essential reference but as a treasure house that provides immense pleasure and rewards in simply browsing in it. (W. Royal Stokes)

A glorious labor of love, this massive volume makes a substantial contribution to documenting the musical life of one too long absent from the history books. The work’s inclusive scope and the thorough research that went into its making are exemplary and deserve to be emulated by others involved in similar projects. It is hoped that the existence of this resource will inspire more to investigate Braff’s life and music. (ARSC Journal)

[Born to Play] is truly much more than a mere discography. It contains not only the dates and titles of all of Braff’s recordings, but lists all of the performances that the author found documented and includes passages from articles and reviews, too. Thus between prosaic lists of ensemble members and repertories emerges a portrait of a musician on the go, an extraordinarily active musician who not only performed with the great names in swing, but who also enjoyed competing with musicians from other genres. (Jazzinstitut Darmstadt)

[I]f you are a fan of Braff or even the mainstream genre...you really should pick up this work. It will give you many evenings of relaxed reading...The author, Tom Hustad, seems to have had the cooperation of Mr. Braff, certainly a feat in itself. In addition the author seems to have referenced and quoted from many interviews and press items of Braff. There are some wonderful stories here...This is just a wonderful bio-discography...It’s outstanding! (Cadence Magazine)

Ruby Braff - Born to Play by Thomas Hustad
By Sonny McGown
This outstanding new book is a thoroughly detailed documentation of the 55 plus years musical career of Ruby Braff, the late jazz trumpet master. Born in 1927, Braff was one of a handful of second generation jazz musicians like Bob Wilber, Kenny Davern, Dick Wellstood and Ralph Sutton that earned top Jazz stature by continuing in the footsteps of their first generation predecessors such as Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett, Jimmie Noone, Benny Goodman and Fats Waller amongst several others. Like all of these Jazz greats, Ruby had a unique and immediately identifiable sound that was coupled with superb technique and phrasing. The resultant was an endless stream of musical creativity that unquestionably deserves an accounting in the history of Jazz recordings.
Professor Tom Hustad passionately has taken on the immensely challenging task of documenting Ruby's lengthy performing career. His scholarly tome clearly reflects many years of intense research that is factually supported and annotated throughout the volume. I have been a jazz record collector for over 50 years and I am simply amazed at the level of information amassed as well as how much hitherto undocumented information is brought to light. Ruby performed with a wide array of Jazz luminaries as well as popular artists and you certainly will be surprised at some of his musical encounters. As a Jazz discography, this book chronologically details all of Ruby's known recording sessions with dates and personnel where identifiable. Each session has a concise listing of all known issues in the various recording formats (LP, CD, Cassette etc.). Unissued material from these sessions is noted also and serves to whet the collector's appetite even more! Additionally, Hustad has noted hundreds of both public and private appearances where Ruby was a participant. In many cases these occurrences are embellished with recollections from other musicians recounting pertinent and often humorous stories about Ruby who had a very sharp wit that he often displayed spontaneously just as he did in his musical improvisation. I found these anecdotes to be very entertaining!
"Born to Play" is published by Scarecrow Press and is another noteworthy volume in the highly acclaimed "Studies In Jazz" series edited in conjunction with the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Quite simply that means that this book meets all criteria as an authoritative Jazz Discography and reference work for all time. Personally I can say that since I have purchased this book I have spent many enjoyable hours checking my record shelves and searching for missing items on the internet. Recommendation wise this one deserves 5 stars all around! Ruby personally endorsed and supported Professor Hustad's approach and objectives in compiling this discography. To me, the front cover photo of Ruby with a smiling Louis Armstrong says it all; he was Born to Play! Now you too can know what Ruby played.

Bio-Discography Supreme!
By Patrick W. Goodhope
For those of us that are endlessly fascinated by the tracking of an artist's recordings, discographies provide the foundation. And this bio-discography of Ruby Braff fits the bill magnificently.

Covering Braff's recording and performance career from the beginning to his last live offering, this tome documents in fine detail Braff's musical career in chronological order. Also included are the specifics regarding several unreleased recordings.

The text follows the template established by Russ Connor and his groundbreaking bio-discography of Benny Goodman.

Ruby was directly involved with the author in the research and preparation and authorized this effort.

If you love Ruby Braff, this work is absolutely essential and to be treasured.

Review

The Golden Age of American Musical Theatre offers a snapshot of an important period in musical-theater history. After lean times on Broadway in the 1930s, the 1943 production of Oklahoma!, by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, ushered in a phase on Broadway now known as the "Golden Age." Highlighted by great shows, costumes, and stars, this period brought Broadway back to life. From mid-1940 until 1965, at least one hit musical was produced almost every year....The largest section of the volume features alphabetical show-by-show descriptions in which author Naden offers basic information about every production: dates, numbers of shows in runs, theater names, casts and creators, synopses, prominent songs, awards, and a designation for "flops," or shows with fewer than 162 performances....Rounding out the volume are chapters featuring short biographies of stars and creators from the period, histories and descriptions of each Broadway theater, information about the awards associated with Broadway, a list of individual songs with their corresponding musicals, and a year-by-year time line of the shows produced from 1943 through 1965. This title will likely be shelved among numerous similar works about Broadway, but its specific focus will appeal to readers and researchers interested in this particular period.

(Booklist)

Naden, known primarily for her children's books, here surveys the Golden Age of musical theater, but breaks no new ground. Following a short historical overview, the book catalogs 180 musicals of the period, with each entry listing opening night data, length of run, production credits, original cast and character names, plot synopses (one paragraph each), song lists, and Tony Awards and nominations, along with one-sentence comments. Most of this information can be gleaned from standard theater reference books and the Internet Broadway Database http://www.ibdb.com/ (CH, Jul'06, 43-6440). Naden also includes single-paragraph biographies of Broadway notables, brief entries on Golden Age theaters and awards, and a list of songs and their associated musicals. For a quick guide to Golden Age information, Naden will do, but researchers must also refer to Gerald Bordman and Richard Norton's American Musical Theatre (4th ed., 2010), Thomas Hischak's Broadway Plays and Musicals (CH, Jun'10, 47-5378), Stanley Green and Kay Green's Broadway Musicals Show by Show (6th ed., 2008), and Ethan Mordden's somewhat jaundiced but fun Coming Up Roses: The Broadway Musical in the 1950s (1998). Summing Up: Recommended. Comprehensive musical theater collections; general readers. (CHOICE)

Enthusiasts of music theater are beneficiaries of [Naden's] skills both as storyteller and researcher.... The Golden Age of American Musical Theatre is recommended for libraries and institutions; those who frequently teach and perform this repertoire should consider adding it to their holdings as well.
