Television Westerns: Six Decades of Sagebrush Sheriffs, Scalawags, and Sidewinders, by Alvin H. Marill

Westerns have featured prominently in films almost since motion pictures were first produced at the end of the nineteenth century and when televisions invaded American homes in the late 1940s and early '50s, Western programs filled the small screen landscape. Throughout the 1950s and well into the 1960s, these shows dominated television with such long-running successes as Bonanza, Wagon Train, and Maverick. And though the genre has fallen on hard times over the years, it has never died, as Hollywood continues to produce films, mini-series, and shows that keep the west alive.

In Television Westerns: Six Decades of Sagebrush Sheriffs, Scalawags, and Sidewinders, Alvin H. Marill looks at the genre as it was represented from the beginning of television—from the twenty-year run of Gunsmoke to the brutal revisionist take of Deadwood. This volume encompasses all manifestations of the Western, including such series as Rawhide, The Virginian, and The Wild, Wild West, as well as movies-of the-week, mini-series, failed pilots, animated programs, documentaries, and even Western-themed episodes of non-Western series that provided their own spin on the genre.

Review
Alvin H. Marill's Television Westerns offers an overview of small-screen offerings that covers the last six decades, focusing on production and broadcast....The series and televised films covered are not only significant in their role as American entertainment— many of these are, as Marrill points out, the cornerstones of popular culture— they are part of an ongoing web of intertexuality that includes adaptations, appropriations, visual and textual references, borrowings, and inspirations in literature, music, film, and of course, television. (Western American Literature)

Any opportunity to revisit television's classic ‘oaters’ is a good one as far as I'm concerned, and Alvin H. Marill's Television Westerns: Six Decades of Sagebush, Sheriffs, Scalawag, and Sidewinders is essentially a survey tracing small-screen horse operas from the medium's earliest days (film transfers like Hopalong Cassidy, radio migrants like The Lone Ranger and Gunsmoke ) through the boom years of the late fifties/early sixties (covered in a chapter titled From Wagon Train and Bonanza to The Virginian and The Big Valley) and right up to the present (including David Milch's profane Deadwood and Elmore Leonard's sublime Justified). (The Paley Center for Media)

The author of this title, a long published author of several titles in the movie, television, and music arenas, has written a book that looks at the history of the western genre from the beginning of broadcast television in the 1940s to present day. Westerns had their peak time in the 1950s and 1960s with the long-running programming of such hits as Bonanza, Wagon Train, and Maverick, with Gunsmoke and its 20-year run eclipsing them all. The volume includes production, cast, and character information on all television westerns, including hit series, movies of the week, mini series, failed pilots, animated programs, documentaries, and western-themed episodes on non-western television shows. This work touches on nearly all of the major western programming since the beginning of television and provides a nice overview of the genre as a whole. (American Reference Books Annual)

Comprehensive if Overpriced Survey of TV Westerns!
By Mike O'Connor
In their time, no televison programs were more beloved and more pervasive than westerns. In 1959, there were 32 weekly westerns running on prime-time! Regardless of the year, westerns were a TV staple until recent times. Alvin Marill provides an overview of SIX DECADES OF SAGEBRUSH, SHERIFFS, SCALAWAGS AND SIDEWINDERS in this 2011 Scarecrow Press release.

Babyboomers should enjoy Marill's wide-ranging survey. Marill takes the readers from the early days of 'Hoppy' and THE LONE RANGER through the Roy & Gene days and on into the DAVY CROCKETT craze. Then, in 1955, TV oaters came of age with THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF WYATT EARP, WAGON TRAIN, GUNSMOKE, MAVERICK and HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL - my personal all-time favorite! - and westerns of varying quality took over the orthicon tube. In the following years, BONANZA, THE VIRGINIAN and THE BIG VALLEY, among others, debuted but, by the 1970s, American viewers had grown saddle sore of western fare. While KUNG FU and DR. QUINN, MEDICINE WOMAN were successes, other oaters quickly bit the dust. More successful were western made-for-TV movies and western miniseries like CENTENNIAL and LONESOME DOVE in the 1970s and '80s.

With such a broad palette, Marill does a good job of summarizing the many Western series, movies, documentaries and Saturday morning cartoons that have graced our TV sets over the years. TELEVISION WESTERNS certainly can't claim to be exhaustive but it is a pleasant, affectionate guided tour through some fondly remembered shows.

Having said that, I think the $49.95 price tag is ridiculous for a 178-page book with NO photographs.

In any case, if you want to touch base with Hoppy, Davy, Matt, Paladin and all the others, TELEVISION WESTERNS is just what Doc Adams ordered. Recommended.

Nice Book, Not Comprehensive, No Photos
By donbodadonbo
This is a nice book, & well-written, but there is NOT A SINGLE PHOTO in it (except for James Garner as "Maverick" on the front cover)! As such, it is far overpriced for only 177 pages of text (the amazon webpage states "190 pages" as of my review) & no photos.

Mr. Marill includes an uncommon discussion of the early TV puppet shows with Western themes in the 1949-50 period.
He mentions that "Hopalong Cassidy", the first TV Western, started in syndication in "late 1948", but it would have been more informative to give us the exact date of this momentous event. He does mention the date this show first appeared on NBC, but that is information easily found elsewhere. Throughout the early pages, there are references to "at least on the West Coast" (p. 3) & "at least in the Chicago area" (p. 4), in terms of TV programming. It would have been more useful to readers, if TV Guide schedules for the East Coast & South were checked as well, to give us a national picture. Later, it didn't matter as much, but for the first ever TV Western, it would be good to have more details documenting how the whole TV Western genre got onto its feet.

Not much space is spent on most of the Western series. My own research has found 124 TV Western series, & I've read that there were even more than that. Marill doesn't discuss anywhere near that number of Westerns, & tends to stick to the longer running, more popular ones. Even "Tales of Wells Fargo" (which is the TV Western with the 10th highest number of episodes), gets only sporadic mention on four non-consecutive pages. Thus, the title of the book, "Television Westerns: Six Decades of..." is perhaps a bit grandiose for such a short book which lacks many of the details I was hoping for.

On p. 163, Marill declares the TV Western to be at "trail's end" after "Deadwood" ended, but "Deadwood" ended first runs in August 2006, & this book was published in 2011. In the past, there have been gaps in TV Westerns that lasted longer than 5 years, yet the TV Western was revived later still. Why should the gap the author mentions, be "trail's end"? I prefer to be more optimistic & consider this gap to be only a long pause, not the end of the trail.

If you're looking for an all-encompassing, encyclopedic work on TV Westerns, look elsewhere; this book does not fill that bill (& neither does any other that I'm aware of). But if you want to re-live the Good Old Days of 1950s-1960s TV Westerns (& later), read some good insight & analysis, this is a nice read, even though the price is way too high for what you get.

Babies in the Library!, by Jane Marino

Eclectic library reading programs for young children have blossomed across the nation over the last decade, encouraging in toddlers a fondness for the library and an excitement for the caches of books to be found there. Likewise, in an effort to promote a love of language in babies as young as three months old, scores of early childhood initiatives are beginning to sprout as well. Aimed at children's librarians and other professionals who work with very young children, this librarian-tested sourcebook provides complete programs that spotlight the value and necessity of singing, speaking, and reading to babies in their earliest months. Ten ready-to-use programs are divided for their intended audience: five for 'pre-walkers' and five for walkers. Marino combines rhymes involving body movement, songs, fingerplays, circle games, and books in ways that teach interaction skills with young children and help to enrich their language and enhance their listening capabilities. Several of the rhymes are repeated in a take-home section to aid librarians and others in charge of children's programs to present parents and caregivers with the tools they need to use rhymes and activities whenever and wherever they want. A helpful bibliography lists the best picture books, programming books, rhyme collections, and numerous recordings that are suitable for very young children. The captivating activities in Babies in the Library! will delight the youngest library users while making it easy for librarians to create programs for this important and growing segment of the library population.

From School Library Journal
Marino presents clear and convincing arguments for holding library programs specifically geared toward babies. Organizing and presenting her ideas in a thoughtful and philosophical manner, she addresses many relevant topics: making babies feel comfortable in the library, creating programs for prewalkers and walkers, handling registration, and offering suggestions for planning and executing programs. She also includes various activities that introduce books, rhymes, puppets, and other tools that enhance language skills. This book resembles the author's Mother Goose Time: Library Programs for Babies and Their Caregivers (H.W. Wilson, 1992) in format but focuses more on the stages of baby development. In both the earlier text and this one, Marino includes a wealth of fingerplays, which are grouped by everyday experiences such as tub and changing rhymes, food rhymes, and lullabies. In the earlier text, Marino's lists of recommended books were broken into categories suchas display books, picture-book titles for Mother Goose time, and resource books. Here, the author includes a more in-depth and categorized list of books, recordings, videos, and other sources useful to librarians and parents. Librarians will welcome this resource from a veteran of children's librarianship, and a valued expert in the field.

From Booklist
Marino has put together a wonderful handbook for children’s librarians who want to do programming for their youngest patrons, those she refers to as “prewalkers” and “walkers.” She has provided five programs for each group, with rhymes, songs, and books. In some cases the words for the songs and rhymes are original; others she has adapted. She gives suggestions and rationales for use, along with directions for movement. The books listed include bibliographic information and annotations. One chapter suggests rhymes for parents and caregivers to use at home, and another suggests rhymes to use with puppets. A list of resources includes rhyme and song collections, picture and board books, music recordings, videos, professional books, and early childhood literacy programs and organizations. This is a book that will not be far from the librarian’s side, both for the programs and Marino’s excellent advice. --Shelley Glantz

Children's Librarians: You Need to Do Baby Laptimes & this book will help!
By SKP
I am an adult Reference Librarian, but as a former Children's Librarian, I was recently assigned to work part of the time in the Children's Department. I have conducted gads and gads of preschool storytimes, toddler times, and programs for school age children over a period of 19 years. But after the summer program ended, we began to see a need in our area for a Baby Lapsit program. We'd had on surge of new parents looking for things to do with Baby, and some of them trying to pass their 3- month-olds as Toddlers and attending programs for a different preschool age group.

Not having taken the plunge into programming for infants and their caregivers before, I felt the need for research. I read everything I could about this type of programming in books and on the Internet, but even working in a library, I didn't have easy access to the title BABIES IN THE LIBRARY by Jane Marino that I ran across online. So I bought the book from Amazon, and I am so thankful I did! It really jump-started my program. I have led 6 weeks of Baby Laptimes as of the time of this writing, and the book has more than paid for itself in the rewards I get from working with cooing, smiling babies and happy mommies every week.

The book tells how to get started, and it even has some sample programs, along with rhymes that are age-appropriate. I took a lot of the ideas, combined them with my own style and personality and ideas, and it has resulted in a program that is earning rave reviews! After we got started we had to stop publicizing it, because word of mouth was enough to spread the word like wildfire, and we wanted to try to keep the group smaller than the average storytime audience for the benefit of those attending.

I wish I'd started doing Laptimes a long time ago! Of course, this book wouldn't have been published yet, so maybe it was perfect timing. Lapsits are a great service to our library patrons, and make my job even more fun than it already was. I used other books that I found in my library system, but this book was the most helpful, and it now has a place of honor as a reference on my shelf by my desk.

Both traditions recognize and draw theological and historical lessons from some of the same narrative sources, but this is the first comparative resource to provide interdisciplinary coverage of the history and textual sources associated with prophets and prophecy. This thorough treatment of a difficult and increasingly controversial subject area will encourage and cultivate knowledge and understanding. Entries are drawn from five main fields:1. Ancient Near Eastern Studies2. Bible and Biblical Studies3. Judaism and Jewish Studies4. The Quran and Quranic Studies5. Islam and Islamic Studies The A to Z of Prophets in Islam and Judaism treat each entry as a compilation of relevant data culled from these different traditions in order to take the reader beyond the expected parameters of research. Originally envisioned as an initial resource for students of comparative religion, the extensive chronology, bibliography, and the overall accessibility of the passages make the book suitable for a much wider audience.

Taiwan was able to solidly build and sustain a film industry only after locally-produced Mandarin films secured markets in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia during the 1960s and 1970s. Though only a small island with a limited population, in its heyday, Taiwan was among the top-10 film producing countries/areas in the world, turning out hundreds of martial arts kung fu films and romantic melodramas annually that were screened in theaters across Southeast Asia and other areas internationally. However, except for one acclaimed film by director King Hu, Taiwan cinema was nearly invisible on the art cinema map until the 1980s, when the films of Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, and other Taiwan New Cinema directors gained recognition at international film festivals, first in Europe, and later, throughout the world. Since then, many other Taiwan directors have also become an important part of cinema history, such as Ang Lee and Tsai Ming-liang.

The Historical Dictionary of Taiwan Cinema covers the history of cinema in Taiwan during both the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945) and the Chinese Nationalist period (1945-present). This is accomplished through a chronology highlighting the main events during the long period and an introduction which carefully analyses the progression. The bulk of the information, however, appears in a dictionary section including over a hundred very extensive entries on directors, producers, performers, films, film studios and genres. Photos are also included in the dictionary section. More information can be found through the bibliography. Taiwan cinema is truly unique and this book is a good place to find out more about it, whether you are a student, or teacher, or just a fan.

Taiwan cinema has been intertwined historically and politically with that of China, Hong Kong, and Japan for over a century. Academic and film historian Lee (Taipei National Univ. of the Arts in Taiwan) focuses on Taiwan cinema during two divided periods of Taiwan history: Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) and Nationalist rule (1945-present). This well-researched book features an excellent and informative introductory essay, a reader's note, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a detailed chronology (1895-2011), more than 140 entries, an extensive bibliography, maps, and photographs. In the reader's note, Lee explains the complex Romanization systems used throughout the volume, including Cantonese, English, Pinyin, and Wade-Giles for Chinese names, and modified Hepburn for Japanese names. The main dictionary entries feature prominent directors, producers, actors, studios, organizations, genres, and representatives of the best Taiwanese films. Overall, this is a useful resource for students and scholars in film or East Asian studies. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers. (CHOICE)

Excellent English language history of Taiwanese cinema.
By UCF Film
This volume contains very informative entries covering the entire history of motion pictures in Taiwan. For English-speakers, like myself, this is an irreplaceable resource. It is written by a scholar (who is also a leading documentary filmmaker in Taiwan) but the prose is clear and engaging.

For students, government officials, and researchers of all kinds, Canadian Geography is a comprehensive, scholarly bibliography of references covering all types and aspects of the geography of Canada. . . . The work also includes a sizable listing of scholarly journals worldwide consulted. This compendium will certainly provide significant access to the body of knowledge comprising the geography of Canada. (American Reference Books Annual, May 2010)

A long book does not always require a long review. All readers of Reference Reviews will know what to expect from a bibliography, and this one delivers what its title promises. It lists (without annotations) 17,600 books, articles, dissertations and theses - but not government publications - mostly in English or French, but also in several other languages, on all aspects of Canadian geography, though it does not trespass into geology. Though quite highly priced, this large-scale work is likely to be the definitive book on its topic, and as such an essential purchase for any library with a serious interest in the geography of Canada. (Reference Reviews)

Twelve novels and nine short stories define one of the most extraordinary fictional characters of all time, creating the basis for the most successful movie series in cinematographic history, watched by more than half the world's population. The single person probably more responsible than any other for glamorizing the murky world of espionage is Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, who himself lived a remarkable double life of spy and writer. Everyone has an opinion on why 007 became so successful, but one possible explanation is the ingenious formula of fact, fiction, and sheer fantasy. Certainly the author drew on friends and places he knew well to provide the backdrop for his drama, but what proportion of his output is authentic, and what comes directly from the author's imagination?

These questions and more are examined in the Historical Dictionary of Ian Fleming's World of Intelligence: Fact and Fiction. This is done through a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on actual cases of espionage, real-life spies, MI5, SIS, CIA, KGB, and others. It also contains entries on Ian Fleming's novels and short stories, family and friends, his employers and colleagues, and other notable characters.

Review
A fascinating read. This work is an excellent resource. (American Reference Books Annual)

Ian Fleming's life was nearly as eventful as the one he created for James Bond in 12 novels and nine short stories. West here makes the point that Fleming used people, organizations, and events in his life as fodder for his tales of the fictional British secret agent. Most of the entries are on people and organizations, both real and imagined, major players and the barely mentioned, from Fleming's real life and Bond's fictional one. Entries range in length from three sentences to 16 pages and include cross-references. The longest one is on Mark Chalmers, hero of The Lifeline, a 1946 spy novel written by Fleming's teacher Phyllis Bottome (Bond and Chalmers bear striking resemblances). A chronology, general index, and bibliography are included. West, real name Rupert Allason, is a real character in his own right―a former Tory member of Parliament, a frequent litigant, and an espionage historian who has compiled several other historical dictionaries on the subject for Scarecrow. BOTTOM LINE: There is intriguing material here, but the title will appeal primarily to specialized library collections. Buy where demand warrants. (Library Journal, April 2010)

Nigel West examines the fascinating double life of spy and writer Ian Fleming, who will forever be known for creating James Bond, one of the most intriguing fictional spies in modern history―as well as the most lucrative; the Bond movies have been seen by more than half of the world's population. The volume consists of a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced entries on actual cases of espionage and real-life spies, along with entries on Fleming's novels, his family and friends, his employers and colleagues, and other notable characters from his work. (Reference Editor Mirela Roncevic's personal pick Library Journal, December 2009)

Different
By DAVID WHITE
A rather strange (and not inexpensive) book. It is an incomplete mixture of Fleming's life, his family, the Bond books and characters as these things supposedly interrelate with real life spying and espionage events. There are some errors of fact (eg. the year of death of Hugh Gaitskell) along with a very long (15 pages) and totally out of place essay on the fictional character Mark Chalmers. I am still hoping for the day when someone can do justice to the books and produce an authoritative and definitive encyclopaedia.

Historical Dictionary of Australian Aborigines (Historical Dictionaries of Peoples and Cultures), by Mitchell Rolls, Murray Johnson

The Australian Aborigines first arrived on the continent at least 60,000 years ago. They almost certainly landed on the northwest coast by sea from the nearby islands of the Indonesian archipelago. That first arrival may have been replicated many times over. The following exploration and settlement of a vast and varied continent was a venture of heroic proportions. The new settlers had reached southern Tasmania, the point farthest from the original landfall at least 30,000 years ago. By the early 17th century, when the first European seafarers arrived in Australian waters, the Aboriginal nations were living in every part of the continent, having colonized the tropical rainforests of the north, the vast arid deserts of the interior, and the cool and damp woodlands of the southeast.

The Historical Dictionary of Australian Aborigines relates the history of Australia's indigenous inhabitants from their arrival on the continent 60,000 years ago to the centuries long European colonization process starting in the 1600s to their role in today's Australia. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 300 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, places, events, institutions, and aspects of culture, society, economy, and politics. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Australian Aboriginal peoples.

Review
This accessible, alphabetically organized dictionary manages to impart a great deal of information on the Australian Aborigines in relatively short entries. Topics include significant people; places; cultural topics; and general categories as well as political and activist organizations and political acts and movements. Related entries are noted in bold within the body of the entry, with see also information in capital letters at the end of some entries. The volume begins with an informative introduction, which is followed by a note on orthography, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, and a detailed chronology. The bibliography, which rounds out the dictionary, is lengthy enough to require a table of contents and introduction. Arranged in rough subject groupings, it lists books in 4 main areas ("Reference Works," "Ethnography and Anthropology," "Thematic Works," and "Works by Indigenous Writers"), which are then further subdivided into 22 more discrete categories. This readable, informative book provides an excellent starting place for anyone seeking insight into the history of Australia's indigenous population. More introductory and less narrowly focused than The Oxford Companion to Aboriginal Art and Culture (2000), this is a sound purchase for most college and university collections. (Booklist)

This reviewer would highly recommend this dictionary from the series. It is a well-written history of the Aborigines that updates their history through 2010. (American Reference Books Annual)

Historical Dictionary of Soccer (Historical Dictionaries of Sports), by Tom Dunmore

Soccer is the world's most popular sport and one of the globe's best known cultural practices. The pinnacle of the sport worldwide is the FIFA World Cup, a competition held every four years, which crowns one nation as the world champion in front of huge global television audiences: over half of the planet's population watched the 2010 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands. From the humble origins of modern soccer in Great Britain in the 19th century, world soccer has become today a vast, commercialized global industry, with huge salaries paid to the biggest stars due to the massive amounts of revenue generated through the sale of television rights, ticket sales, and sponsorship income.

The Historical Dictionary of Soccer presents a comprehensive history of the game through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, numerous appendixes that list everything from the FIFA World Player of the Year to FIFA World Cup Winners and Runners-Up to the UEFA Champions League Winners and Runners-Up, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries on places, teams, terminology, and people, including Garrincha, Pelé, Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane, and Lionel Messi. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about soccer.

Review
Dunmore (English-born, Chicago-based, award-winning soccer writer) packs a wealth of information into this dictionary on "the beautiful game"--now better known as "the global game" for its popularity and profitable commercialism. The brief preface prepares the ground for the meaty 250-page dictionary section (comprising more than 400 cross-referenced entries). Included are a list of acronyms and abbreviations, FIFA member associations by country, and a useful chronology (extending from 206 BCE to 2010). Dunmore's 18-page introduction is a solid, up-to-date history of soccer as it evolved in Europe and South America, and especially in Scotland and England--from upper-class beginnings down to the working masses. The author covers the organization of the Laws of the Game, the formation of regional associations, the growing importance of fans, soccer's commercialization and globalization (especially through television), and the growth of women's soccer in the late 20th century, especially in North America. The dictionary section features long and short entries, describing places, e.g., world-famous stadia in Rio, Mexico City, London, and elsewhere, along with others tragically remembered for disaster and death (e.g., Hillsborough and Ibrox). Stars like Pele, Maradona, and Beckenbauer, and modern icons like Beckham, Messi, and Mia Hamm, all find their places here. Soccer terminology, e.g., offside, corner kick, foul throw, and penalty shootout, is explained for the uninitiated. Teams like Manchester United and Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and many more are all highlighted in their national and international settings through cross-references. Rounding out the dictionary are 20 appendixes, e.g., on FIFA presidents and players of the year; and a bibliography, with information including periodicals and websites of interest. No photographs, illustrations, or concluding general index. Dunmore is to be commended for packing so much into just 300-plus pages. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. (CHOICE)

Dunmore, a writer, blogger, and columnist for Chicago Sports Weekly, offers a comprehensive overview of the world’s most popular sport. The introductory essay is followed by more than 400 cross-referenced entries that cover countries, teams, terminology, rules, championships, and people associated with the game, including Pelé and David Beckham. Reading the entries reveals the evolution of the game, from its earliest days as a game called cuju (meaning “kick ball”) played during the Han dynasty in China and popularity with working-class men in England to its spread across the globe, the marketing of team logos and shirts, and the international appeal of the game as created by television. There is also a plethora of information on such topics as hooliganism, stadiums, sanctions, and women’s soccer and its stars. The book’s 20 appendixes include listings of male and female FIFA World Players of the Year and dates, hosts, winners, and runners-up in the Olympics, the World Cup, and other international events. BOTTOM LINE A must for soccer fans. (Library Journal)

For those more interested and experienced in soccer and its history, this volume in Scarecrow’s new historical sports dictionaries is a welcome addition to reference literature. Arranged in alphabetic order, more than 400 names, places, terms, organizations, leagues and conferences, teams and schools, and events chronicle the history of the game. Included are players (men and women), teams, and even brief entries on countries where soccer has become such an internationally popular game. Terminology used in the game is briefly documented. An interesting chronology and introduction precede the well-written entries and 20 appendixes trace presidents of the federation of soccer, FIFA World Players, Olympic Games, various national cups, and intercontinental cups. Cross-references in bold lead the reader to other relevant entries. Nearly 20 pages of bibliography conclude this useful ready-reference book. This is an excellent reference source for students, researchers, and the general public needing facts about soccer on an international level. (American Reference Books Annual)

Overall, this volume will act as a useful general reference source. It is a worthy effort that belongs in any library where the history of sport or soccer is either studied or the subject of serious interest. (Reference Reviews)

Tom Dunmore undertook a colossal task when he decided to write a historical dictionary of soccer. ... Dunmore’s historical dictionary is very well researched, written and structured. The book is divided into several parts: editor’s foreword; preface; acronyms and abbreviations; chronology; introduction; dictionary; 20 appendices (arranged in alphabetical order from A to T); and a bibliography. ... [T]his is an outstanding historical dictionary with a wide range of potential readership. It would be a great addition to the shelves of any research or university library, not to mention the private book collections of many soccer aficionados. (Sport in History)

A definitive introduction to the great game
By Nick
The Historical Dictionary of Soccer is extremely comprehensive and covers a great number of players throughout the years. As a recent newcomer to the sport as a fan, this is a great starting point. I vaguely knew of the origins of the sport, but didn't have a full understanding as to the breadth of the sport. And now the sport is played everywhere and watched by billions. It's astonishing how names of players like Messi, Beckham and Maradona can be mentioned all over the world and are looked upon as heroes or villains. Along with the billions that are spent on the sport, it's an economic and political powerhouse that is a hard subject to get a full grasp on.

A lot of the book's credit goes to the author, Tom Dunmore, who combines historical analysis from the view of a historian, along with the fan's perspective. The book is highly readable.

This book is a dictionary and not so much a casual book to sit down and read. If you want to settle a bet or dig deep and research something on the sport, this is the book for you. It's not to say that fans won't enjoy this at all - they would. However, the only real downside is the cost of the book. It's not the author's fault, but it's price way above what is considered a "must" as a fan of soccer.

About 1/3 of the entries a project on this sport requires.
By R. P. Kurtti
Firstly, I do not blame the author, the text is well-written and accurate, if abbreviated. It is obvious that the book needed to fit a format, and for the world sport of association football, 1000 pages would be more appropriate than the less than 300 that the book actually contains. Any follower of the sport, and more particularly any historian, will be able to find countless examples of items missing, presumably landing on the cutting-room floor. I open to one random page (51/52, for example) to find that John Charles and Martin Chivers are absent, yet there is an entry for Bum-Kun Cha. This is the ever-present theme and frustration. I would gladly have paid the very steep price for a more complete and exhaustive dictionary, but the size of the volume dooms it to a grade of "incomplete." I waited and found it used, for $10...I wouldn't suggest spending more than $20 or $25 for it. An upgraded, much more complete edition could be absolutely invaluable, but this effort falls short.
