According to African American and African studies scholar Pate, rap is not just the emergent African American literary form of the postmodern age, but is responsible for scores of young people improbably embracing all the traditional and nontraditional poetic conventions of the English language (through a mix of cultural osmosis, miming, and instinct). Though he isn't quite able to justify a comparison between the phenomenon of rap and Gutenberg's invention of moveable type, Pate presents a strong case for the artistic and cultural importance of rap, analyzing lyrics and artists from multiple angles. Sizing up classic literary works from stalwarts like Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou and others alongside stanzas from rap songs, Pate finds eerie similarities in tone, message and style. He also contrasts the work of contemporaries within the genre, such as the straightforward pop of Young MC against the politically strident work of Public Enemy, examining rap's ability to offer a visceral, vital take on society-and to dive headfirst into society's most extreme indulgences. Considering the films that won the Academy Award for Best Picture from 1927 to 2008 and the American Film Institute's 'Greatest American Films' listed in 1996 and 2006, Monaco (cinema/video, Montana State Univ.; Understanding Society, Culture, and Television) has injudiciously divided American cinema into three eras―'Classic Hollywood (1927–48),' 'Hollywood in Transition (1949–74),' and 'New Hollywood' (1975 to the present). There are also sections about the founding of the studio system, a handful of classic silent films, and the coming of sound. For each era, Monaco attempts to encapsulate the genres, leading directors, dominant studios, and the best films. As he discusses the films, he proffers brief plot summaries, production background, and information about those involved in making the films, budgets, critical reviews, and public receptions. Chronicling Award Winners with Reviews and Plot

Those of us who grew up with physical reference books will find "A History of American Movies" warm and familiar. It's a page-turner of encyclopedia-esque recaps of each Academy Award winner for Best Picture, along with those films which were included on the AFI's list of America's 100 best films. I found everything leading up to the 1970's to be intriguing and informative in most spots. Making the list chronological is, in general, logical for the reader, and helps paint the picture of industry changes. The text straddles the line between academic writing and everyday prose.

Monaco looks to find themes in the pictures and ties them together via chapters. Though he varies the formula for each entry slightly, most films are only treated with two to three pages of narrative, covering four main areas: important details about the people/studios involved in the movie; a quick synopsis of the plot; critical reaction to the film; and, any lasting impact on the industry or popular culture.

While I enjoyed the piece, I find some major points of criticism. The choice of highlighting Oscar winners and AFI selections provides a fairly narrow canvas for discussion-- especially since the title of the book is "A History of American Movies." It really is only a book about award-winning films. Those of us who are under 40 will feel the loss of very important films/genres which did not make the cut for sections after 1980. Comedy, horror, action, animation, romance are practically absent from the last quarter of the book, despite the fact each of those genres produced very influential works.

Another point of contention for me is how the author uses his researched film criticism. In the early chapters, it feels fresh to read how culture critics of the day lauded or lambasted works that are considered classics now. (The section on "The Wizard of Oz" is hilarious.) But as the book continues, it feels that Monaco does not effectively use criticisms to reach any broad consensus about a movie-- and the results just boil down to "some people liked it, some people hated it." Portions where criticisms are used to demonstrate a "culture war"-type divide feel unsupported.

There are multiple points where the author goes on right-leaning political tangets which are not supported enough to feel relevant. He heavily implies that government intervention in the studio monopolies on production, distribution, and exhibition of films was detrimental to the quality of later filmmaking, without exploring the benefits to a more open system. He spends a good deal of the book pushing back on widely-held beliefs about the negative effects of the blacklisting of possible communist sympathizers in Hollywood. Also, he doesn't directly deal with the restrictions of free speech by the restrictive Hollywood production code. Conservativism is rarely addressed, but "liberalism" and "elites" are frequently brought up as boogey men.

I think this book works as a general reference guide: a good starting point to learn more about award-winning American cinema. Further fleshing out of what each film represented about American at the time, and less superfluous detail, would make it a more essential work.

This annotated bibliography of recent jazz monographs documents an important period in jazz historiography; during the 1990s an explosion of publications, particularly by academics, documented performers, venues, recordings, genres, instruments, and so forth....This book by Greenberg (Jersey City Free Public Library) does what it sets out to do, and quite thoroughly. The 700 annotations are descriptive (and often cursory) rather than critical. Classifying the entries by type (e.g., biographies, discographies) and then by subtype makes for a convenient look at related items, and the three indexes collocate books on or by individuals. With the availability of online databases such as WorldCat (CH, Nov'07, 45-1183), one questions the need for a bibliography that documents such relatively recent literature, especially when so much documentation needs to be done for earlier eras. Abbott (Walk Worthy of Your Calling: Quakers and the Traveling Ministry), Mary Ellen Chijioke, Pink Dandelion (The Quakers: A Very Short Introduction), and John William Oliver Jr. (coeditor, Founded by Friends: The Quaker Heritage of 15 American Colleges and Universities), all of whom edited the previous edition, present here approximately 100 additional pages that include a longer introduction, an updated chronology, an appendix of statistics, and new entries that cover, for example, educational institutions. Entries run from a single paragraph to two pages. Some, such as the one covering publishing, now feature additional paragraphs, while other pieces that previously combined two ideas, such as “advices and queries,” have been divided between the two terms. The international flavor of the first edition remains strong. For example, all eight 21st-century events highlighted in the chronology took place outside of North America. Access is enhanced by numerous cross-references and a lengthy index, and the material is backed up by extensive bibliographic reference....This dictionary is recommended for religion and philosophy students, especially those without access to the first edition. John William Oliver Jr. is professor emeritus of the history department at Malone University in Ohio. He was clerk/convener of the Quaker Historians and Archivists biennial conferences and served on the executive committee of the Ohio Academy of History.

This comprehensive catalog facilitates rapid location of plays appearing in English in both textbooks and anthologies published between 1900 and 2000. Included are multivolume sets from series that began in the 20th century but were completed after 2000. In addition to correcting errors from previous editions, Montgomery (library science, Valdosta State Univ.; Yale Book of Quotations), who revived the guide after a 20-year interval, has nearly doubled the number of playwrights included and expanded the scope to consider 744 collections. Her experience as an interlibrary loan librarian has permitted her location of English publications in 103 countries, thus adding another 3,593 new plays to the previous edition’s 6,548. Returning after some 20 years, this volume (7th ed., 1988) remains the classic index to plays in collections and anthologies. The previous edition covered the years 1900 to 1985. Montgomery (Valdosta State Univ.) has revived this work, which now allows users to quickly and easily locate full-length plays written in English and published between 1900 and 2000. Plays are indexed by title, author, and anthology title. Montgomery adds more than 2,300 new authors and 3,593 new plays, expanding the work's focus to include works from 103 countries and making works by women and LGBT authors more discoverable. Also of value are the birth, death, and performance dates for the plays included. Although the print index in general is becoming something of a dinosaur and some of this volume's functionality can be found in EBSCO/H. W. Wilson's online Play Index (CH, Jun'06, 43-5624), Ottemiller's Index still fills an important niche in the reference universe. Fascinating look into the life of a jazz man in recent years.

The book is practically a gig-by-gig record of Kenny's later career. It is of interest to anyone who wonders what it is like to be a jazz musician in the rock and roll and post-rock era. It also makes it clear why there are so few such individuals.

It is wonderful that this book mentions the Dixiecats. My father, John Nardozza, was the drummer for that recording and very few people know about this record. My father sent the one copy known to be in existence to Kenny's wife shortly after Kenny's death. My father, were he still living, would have been honored by his mention in this book. Unfortunately, his last name, Nardozza, is spelled incorrectly as Nardossa in the book :-(

The author also states that there were two takes of At The Jazz Band Ball. That is incorrect. The original 78 record has a single take of At The Jazz Band Ball on one side and one take of Basin Street Blues on the other. My friend Stan Rogacki made a professional tape recording from this record in an attempt to preserve it. There was a bad take on the tape recording due to improper turntable tracking. It is believed that the author mistook this for an additional take of the At The Jazz Band Ball recording.

About the Author
Naomi Jackson, Ph.D. in performance studies, is associate professor in the Department of Dance at Arizona State University. She is the author of Converging Movements: Modern Dance and Jewish Culture at the 92nd Street Y (2002).

Toni Shapiro-Phim, Ph.D. in cultural anthropology, is director of research and archiving at the Khmer Arts Academy in Takhmao, Cambodia. She is the co-author of Dance in Cambodia (1999).

Dignity in Motion

This is an expensive but well worth the price book designed for a scholarly audience. An amazing collection about the social uses and expressions of dance, organized exceptionally well into themes of regulation, choreography and human rights, healing, and challenging power structures.

A powerful statement from the intro that challenges us to look forward to future directions in dance studies:
"How can socially committed artists impact their communities, yet avoid becoming dogmatic, programmatic, or self-righteous? How can an artist really know whether the rights and freedoms he or she fights for will in fact result in positive benefits...how can choreography be aesthetically engaging AND an efective means of political, social and economic change?" and on.

One major criticism: There is no chapter devoted to hip-hop, a GLARING ommission considering the subject of this book. And, no mention of Michael Jackson...perhaps this would be different had the book not been published before his death. Both of these subjects should have been included in a collection edited by a scholar working in the United States and another who is working in war-torn regions, especially Cambodian dance. Because both are central to understanding the experience of African-Americans, human rights, and social justice in the United States. Structural violence is still mass political violence, and understanding Black experience in the U.S. should be a central topic for scholarship.

Even so, this book earns 5 stars for its opening of an extremely important topic: the role of dance and other expressive arts in social justice, human rights, and our broader understanding of the human condition.

Must read for enlighteneds interested in the world at large

This book provides a unique and illuminating perspective that conveys a deep sense and global understanding of the complex relationship between dance and human rights. While most people do not ordinarily connect the field and culture of dance to human rights, this book explains the interrelatedness of dance, cultural expression, government support and oppression, and individuality. Focusing on twentieth and twenty-first century experiences (through the lens of dance and beyond), this book is a must-read for anyone trying to find a fresh look at domestic and international issues.
