The scope of this book is broad and the subject matter is important in the world in which we live. As stated in the introduction, “One in five Americans currently lives with at least one disability or disorder.” This text takes on the task of selecting and describing books for children that include characters with emotional, cognitive, and physical disabilities, ranging from low-incidence disabilities such as visual impairments to high-incidence disorders such as ADHD. Hundreds of books, both fiction and nonfiction, are included in each chapter. Each entry includes the title, author, publisher, year of publication, ISBN, and grade level, as well as a short annotation. While the lists are extensive, there does not seem to be a systematic method of selection for inclusion. The publication dates are primarily in the 2000s; however some books were published in the '80s and '90s and a few were published even earlier. No attempt is made to analyze how they compare or how they deal with the disability or disorder included within. This dictionary by Hall (Armstrong Atlantic State Univ.) is a concise, accessible reference book on Haiti beginning with Columbus's landfall on the island of Hispaniola in 1492 and ending with the election of Michel Martelly as president in 2011. The volume features over 400 alphabetically arranged, cross-referenced entries. A focus is on political leadership--a major concern, given the large number of Haitian presidents who were either killed or forced to resign after only brief periods in office. Hall's dictionary updates Roland Perusse's Historical Dictionary of Haiti (CH, Oct'77). And it is twice the size (295 pages versus Perusse's 124 pages), contains more entries, and offers a more extensive bibliography (16 pages versus Perusse's 8 pages). Like Perusse, Hall offers a useful chronology and a topical listing of books covering art, literature, education, public health, sports, entertainment, geography, archaeology, the Haitian diaspora, folklore, and economics. He also provides 18 Internet sources. Hall's dictionary is strongest for the 20th century. Treatment of religion and culture are not as thorough as treatment of politics. Nevertheless, this new dictionary constitutes the most extensive single-volume reference work available on Haiti. Valuable Research Tool

Done well, historical dictionaries are important tools for scholars, students, and others interested in a particular area of history. And Professor Hall's Historical Dictionary of Haiti does it right. The key is in the selection of entries. Michael Hall, a well-regarded Latin American historian with first-hand experience in Haiti and neighboring Dominican Republic, has selected for this dictionary a collection of A-Z content that covers the breadth of Haitian historiography. A front-to-back read of the book provides a useful foundation of survey-level knowledge of Haiti. In addition, individual entries capture the essence of each topic. For instance, the "Diaspora" entry concisely yet compellingly illustrates how tragic events and circumstances that too often have dominated Haitian history have compelled the migration of its people to other nations. Throughout the book, individual topics, events, and people viewed through the historian's lens are communicated in ways that most-appropriately place them within the larger context of Haitian history. Professor Hall's work would be a welcome addition to the library of anyone looking for a comprehensive and readable survey of Haitian history.

I have worked in the non-profit emergency response and humanitarian field for over 25 years (including Haiti) and have shared this historical dictionary with colleagues and peers in other organizations. And they do not want to give it back ! It is an excellent refernce guide for all things Haitian, especially for those that are new to Haiti culture, history and politics. It is a must read and a great window into understanding Haiti and it's significant history, culture and people.

Alvin H. Marill (1934-2010) spent his career in broadcasting, direct marketing, and publishing. Among his many books are More Theatre: Stage to Screen to Television (2002) and Television Westerns: Six Decades of Sagebrush Sheriffs, Scalawags, and Sidewinders (2011), both published by Scarecrow Press. He was a contributing editor to Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide and a charter member of the Television Movie Hall of Fame.

Outstanding Review of Literature and Culture!

Nancy Thalia Reynolds is thorough! Whatever writing she takes on -- fiction, travel, cultural phenomenon -- you can count on a deeply considered and accurately constructed book. MIXED HERITAGE IN YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE takes on real issues for real characters, not just multiculturalism as an abstraction. One of my favorite middle-grade fiction authors, Karen Hesse, is best known for her Newberry-award-winning, OUT OF THE DUST. Reynolds draws our attention to another of her books written in verse, ALEUTIAN SPARROW(2003) and as Reynolds visits the pages of this book, I was so taken in by the recounting of the Aleut story after World War II that I wanted to find and read the book, not to kids, but myself.

Over and over again, Reynolds reminds us of the importance of literature's role in going deeply into the emotional lives of characters, of fettering out the unspeakable. As she dwells on the work of Jean Davies Okimoto, she asks essential questions for our American culture: "When you are adopted, which is your true culture? Your true ethnic heritage?"

This is a must-read book for teachers, teachers, college students, thousands working with multicultural youth and indeed, book clubs. Reynolds not only has read hundreds of books with the skill of an editor's mind, but she sends this back to us and says, take this on, don't be afraid to talk about diversity and its evolving roots!

About the Author
Pamela R. Stern is an adjunct professor of anthropology at Simon Fraser University in Canada. She has been studying the Inuit for three decades already and, during this time, she has visited many Inuit communities in Alaska, Canada and Greenland. Her own research is rather varied ranging from adolescent life, employment and resource development to citizenship. It has resulted in numerous articles and several books, the most recent being Daily Life of the Inuit.
