Review
Fisher adds to this series with beneficial information on the American theater from its inception until 1880. The dictionary opens with a chronology spanning from 1538 to 1880, providing a framework for this period. Including brief biographical background along with some plot synopses, more than 1,000 short entries offer profiles of actors (Sarah Bernhardt in her debut, Edwin Booth, and Ira Aldridge), plays (Hazel Kirke, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Our American Cousin, and Fashion: Or Life In New York), and theaters (Walnut Street Theater, Ford’s Theater, the McVicker’s Theater, and the African Grove Theater, created for African Americans). Showman P.T. Barnum, producer David Belasco, and actor/playwright Steele MacKaye make appearances, as do historical events such as the Astor Place Opera House Riots and Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Minstrel shows and the use of blackface are a part of theater history during this time, and discussions on both are included here. Cross-references appear in bold. Some entries, such as the description of the five acts of Dion Boucicault’s The Poor of New York go into more depth. An extensive bibliography is subdivided into sections on, for example, women, Native Americans, and cultural and regional studies, which is helpful for additional reading and research. VERDICT Offering a wealth of hard-to-find information in a single volume, this guide will enhance theater history collections. Students and theater buffs will relish this introduction to how theater developed in America. (Library Journal)

Featuring colorful descriptions of the people, plays, and places of American theater from 1538 to 1880, this volume completes a series of historical dictionaries initiated at Scarecrow that covers modernism from 1880–1930 and contemporary American theater from 1930–2010. In those works, as in this one, Fisher strikes the right mix of scholarship and vivacious tone in his characterization of significant plays, writers, actors, and theater personnel of the early era. Brief summaries describe each play's premise and place the work in social, political, and historical context, filling in details that would have been known to audiences at the time and summarizing popular and critical reactions. Also described are important venues for performances, well-known haunts for actors and personnel, significant periodicals and anthologies documenting the scene, and topics such as barnstormers, accidents, child performers, medicine shows—even the popular genres of dog and equestrian dramas—all fleshed out in anecdote-rich entries. The work is rounded out by a detailed chronology, a bibliography balancing current academic sources with selected primary historical sources, and an engaging introductory essay. Cross-referencing enables readers to identify related entries in the series. Enthusiastically recommended to all American theater aficionados. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers; general readers; professionals/practitioners. (CHOICE)

The latest entry in Rowman & Littlefield's Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts series completes a trilogy of titles about the American stage: Fisher was also the coauthor of Historical Dictionary of American Theater: Modernism (2008) and author of Historical Dictionary of American Theater: Contemporary (2011). This volume concentrates on the period from 1538 to 1880. Following the series format, it begins with a chronology, followed by an introductory essay that sets the stage for the alphabetically arrange and thoroughly cross-referenced entries that form the bulk of the book. A comprehensive bibliography completes this rich resource for the serious theater student and devotee. (Booklist)

Revival and Reconciliation: Sacred Music in the Making of European Modernity (Europea: Ethnomusicologies and Modernities), by Philip V. Bo

Sacred music has long contributed fundamentally to the making of Europe. The passage from origin myths to history, the sacred journeys that have mobilized pilgrims, crusaders, and colonizers, the politics and power sounded by the vox populi—all have joined in counterpoint to shape Europe’s historical longue durée. Drawing upon three decades of research in European sacred music, Philip V. Bohlman calls for a reexamination of European modernity in the twenty-first century, a modernity shaped no less by canonic religious and musical practices than by the proliferation of belief systems that today more than ever respond to the diverse belief systems that engender the New Europe. In contrast to most studies of sacred musical practice in European history, with their emphasis on the musical repertories and ecclesiastical practices at the center of society, Bohlman turns our attention to individual and marginalized communities and to the collectives of believers to whose lives meaning accrues upon sounding the sacred together.

In the historical chapters that open Revival and Reconciliation, Bohlman examines the genesis of modern history in the convergence and conflict that lie at the heart of the Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Critical to the meaning of these religions to Europe, Bohlman argues, has been their capacity to mobilize both sacred journey and social action, which enter the everyday lives of Europeans through folk religion, pilgrimage, and politics, the subjects of the second half of his study. The closing sections then cross the threshold from history into modernity, above all that of the New Europe, with its return to religion through revival and reconciliation. Based on an extensive ethnographic engagement with the sacred landscapes and sites of conflict in twenty-first-century Europe, Bohlman calls in his final chapters for new ways of hearing the silenced voices and the full chorus of sacred music in our contemporary world.

Ethnomusicologists from different traditions as well as scholars of religious studies and the history of modern Europe will find Revival and Reconciliation a fascinating exploration of the connections between sacred music and the role it plays in the formations of the modern self.

Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy, by Peter Josyph

Regarded by many as one of America's finest-living writers, Cormac McCarthy has produced some of the most compelling novels of the last 40 years. Through the increasing number of cinematic adaptations of his work, including the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men, and the Pulitzer Prize for The Road, McCarthy is entering the mainstream of cultural consciousness, both in the United States and abroad. In Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy, Peter Josyph considers, at length, the author's two masterworks Blood Meridian and Suttree, as well as the novel and film of All the Pretty Horses, McCarthy's play The Stonemason, and his film The Gardener's Son.

The book also includes extended conversations with critic Harold Bloom about Blood Meridian; novelist and poet Robert Morgan about The Gardener's Son; critic Rick Wallach about Blood Meridian; and Oscar-winning screenwriter Ted Tally about his film adaptation of All the Pretty Horses. Drawing on multiple resources of an unconventional nature, this book examines McCarthy's work from original and sometimes provocative perspectives. Proposing a new notion of criticism, Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy will become a useful tool for critics, students, and general readers about one of the great literary talents of the day.

Review
Perhaps the next best thing to actually seeing Acting McCarthy...is to read Josyph's account of the film in Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy, complete with transcriptions, which is perhaps the main 'gift' this book offers. So of course the book is about 'Reading Cormac McCarthy' (beginning with two masterworks, Suttree and Blood Meridian), but it is also about understanding this Southern Gothic writer and about adapting his work to film. (Southwestern American Literature)

About the Author
Peter Josyph works concurrently as an author, painter, and photographer. His fiction, personal essays, criticism, and conversations have appeared in Southern Quarterly, The Bloomsbury Review, Library Journal, Twentieth Century Literature, Studies in Short Fiction, and The Cormac McCarthy Journal. He is the author of Liberty Street: Encounters at Ground Zero (2006).

TRULY AN ADVENTURE FOR THE MIND
By Barbara Mann
This collection offers an opportunity to delve into McCarthy's world without the usual bloated academic verbiage. Josyph always confers a one-of-a-kind appreciation of whatever subject he tackles. Each time I have explored one of his books, I have marveled at a distinctive approach that delivers a body of knowledge through connections that are astonishing. In his own inimitable style and in his beautifully written prose, a deeper appreciation, in this case of McCarthy, is realized. Academic scholarship is advanced; the reader who is keen on McCarthy is fascinated. Through active reading, a comprehensive appreciation of McCarthy is generated.

If you have not yet read Peter Josyph, I suggest you purchase this book. You will enjoy his conversations about McCarthy with critic Harold Bloom and Oscar-winning screenwriter Ted Tally. As you read on, you will understand why I suggest that you look into other books by Josyph, such as Liberty Street: Encounters at Ground Zero, or What One Man Said to Another: Talks With Richard Selzer, Library Edition, and his film Liberty Street: Alive at Ground Zero, which also bears the mark of his distinctive personal style.

It is always a pleasure to enjoy literary criticism. McCarthy's vibrant prose is examined in this book in a way that will draw you back to reading, re-reading, and re-viewing his novels.

Highly recommended.

Refreshing and entertaining
By MMadsen
The title of this collection is perfect, simply because it explores adventures in reading the great fiction of Cormac McCarthy. In doing so, it shows what superb fiction can do to us when reading, understanding, and ultimately living with the works become an adventure. Peter Josyph's work is clearly a labor of love and the book appears to be the memoir of a McCarthy adventurer rather than literary criticism. Therefore, it is understandable why the collection opens with a quote by Gore Vidal: "The critical act must ultimately be the examination of one's own life." Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy is thus a refreshing addition to the growing scholarship on McCarthy's work and is especially so by being very unscholarly in its approach. While most books and collections of literary criticism seem to follow a set, conventional academic method and approach, Josyph's approach is at times very unconventional but always enlightening, engaging, and, dare I say this about a book that is promoted as literary criticism, entertaining.

Among the highlights are excellent interviews with Ted Tally, who wrote the screenplay for the ill-fated adaption of All the Pretty Horses; Rick Wallach, one of the nestors of Cormac McCarthy criticism, interviewed in a bathtub for reasons forgotten (or repressed) by all concerned; and Harold Bloom, one of Blood Meridian's greatest admirers. Also, Josyph's extensive essays - musings seems a more appropriate word - on Blood Meridian and Suttree will be engaging stuff for anyone interested in Cormac McCarthy's fiction.

A Must for both Cormackians and the Casual reader
By Nick Monk
As with everything Peter Josyph produces this is meticulously researched and beautifully written. The book reveals the fascinating engagement of one artist with another, and is stuffed with compelling material for not just McCarthy scholars, but also those with a passing interest who want to know more without having to wrestle with the arcana and jargon that sometimes vitiates literary scholarship. Josyph is a wonderfully probing and skilled interviewer, and the exchanges with Harold Bloom and Rick Wallach bring the joy McCarthy's readers take in his work to the page in vivid fashion. This is far from an uncritical 'homage', however, as Josyph's acute ear for the nuances of McCarthy's texts do not permit sycophancy nor the suspension of disbelief. That Josyph recognises McCarthy's brilliance, however, is unquestioned and this respect and admiration shines through. This is literary criticism of the old school: wonderfully well informed by culture broadly, grounded in reality, accessible, and a real pleasure to read.

In 2001, yet another adaptation of the Superman comic book came to television. Lasting 10 seasons, Smallville took the traditional Superman story and turned it into an American teen action drama about Clark Kent's life at high school―before he donned the famous blue tights and red cape. Instead of depicting Superman's clashes with criminals in Metropolis, the show focused on how Clark first developed his powers and learned to cope with girls, school, and teenage angst. Although largely overlooked by critics and derided by Superman fans who regarded it as too far a departure from the comic book canon, Smallville nonetheless endeared a whole new generation of viewers. The setting, style, narrative, and cast of fresh-faced actors suggested that the Superman story was not only ready for a makeover but also still relevant for a post-9/11 American audience.

In The Smallville Chronicles: Critical Essays on the Television Series, scholars examine the multiple narratives of the Smallville universe. Addressing issues related to gender, sexuality, national identity, myth, history, and politics, these essays explore how the series uses the Superman story to comment on contemporary social issues. Additional essays investigate the complex relationship the show's audience has with the characters through blogging, fan fiction, visits to filming locations, and the creation of websites.

As the first book-length study specifically focused on the Smallville television series, this collection is an excellent text for studies in science fiction, fandom, and teen television scholarship, and it will also have general appeal to fans of the show.

Historical Dictionary of Atomic Espionage (Historical Dictionaries of Intelligence and Counterintelligence), by Glenmore S. Trenear-Harvey

Almost from the moment in 1940 that Otto Frisch and Rudofl Peierls suggested, from their small office in the University of Birmingham, that an atomic weapon could be miniaturized and delivered to its target by aircraft, the concept of atomic espionage can be said to have existed. No sooner had the famous Frisch-Peierls Memorandum been received by the British War Cabinet than a Soviet mole, John Cairncross, passed the details on to his Soviet contact. And 70 years later with the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) estimating that up to 40 countries now have the capability of building nuclear weapons, the need to monitor this activity remains crucial.

The Historical Dictionary of Atomic Espionage relates the history of atomic espionage through a chronology, an introductory essay, and cross-referenced dictionary entries on the agencies, agents, and operations. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about atomic espionage.

Review
This is the fourteenth work in the Historical Dictionaries of Intelligence and Counterintelligence series. Author Trenear-Harvey, a former Royal Air Force jet fighter pilot and station intelligence officer, is recognized as an intelligence expert. The approximately 300 entries are arranged alphabetically and cover people, countries, espionage rings, various forms of surveillance, and code names. The work is arranged in the same fashion as other titles in the series: a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introduction, the dictionary, appendixes, and a bibliography. Entries range in length from one sentence to more than seven pages. Words in bold type within an entry indicate separate entries for those topics; see also references direct the reader to related topics, and see references direct the reader to the correct entry. Familiar names found in this work are Enrico Fermi, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Valerie Plame, and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. There are entries on the major players—the U.S., Soviet Union, People’s Republic of China—as well as France, Germany, Great Britain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, and North Korea. Code names account for a great many of the entries.
The chronology begins with 1939 and ends with 2010. The introduction provides a brief summary and history of the concept of atomic espionage. Appendixes list “Soviet Intelligence Personnel Engaged in ENORMOZ” (an operation to penetrate the Manhattan Project) and “Manhattan Project Espionage Suspects in the VENONA Traffic” (the cryptanalytical program providing Anglo-American counterintelligence information on Soviet atomic espionage). The 10-page bibliography is broken down into categories such as “Atomic Espionage during World War II,” “Atomic Espionage during the Cold War,” and “Cuban Missile Crisis.” Scholars and lay readers alike will enjoy this work, which is an excellent source for academic libraries and large public libraries. Soon after the 1940 conception of using the atom as a weapon, espionage became a factor. From the early days of Soviet spying to the present, numerous nations and groups have longed to possess nuclear weapons. Though intelligence gathering has existed ever since one group decided to fight another, the potential devastation atomic weapons could cause has made the fruits of spying potentially more valuable. As this book indicates, the competition has expanded to include the United States, France, Great Britain, China, Germany, Israel, North Korea, and Iran. Historian and intelligence researcher Trenear-Harvey offers an easy-to-use work arranged in an alphabetical format. It features a foreword by the editor of the "Historical Dictionaries of Intelligence and Counterintelligence" series, of which this book is a part. A good list of acronyms and abbreviations is provided, along with a chronology. Appendixes are titled "Soviet Espionage Personnel Engaged in ENORMOZ" and "Manhattan Project Espionage Suspects in the VENONA Traffic." Entries range in length from a few sentences to a few pages and feature very helpful cross-references. Among the many entries are those for John H. Chapin, Libya, NKVD, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Pakistan, Valerie Plame, Julius Rosenberg, and Nikolai Zabotin. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through professionals/practitioners; general readers. (CHOICE)

This is the 14th book in the rather good Historical Dictionaries of Intelligence and Counterintelligence series....This work is recommended for a wide range of readership to include students of the post-war history of the great powers, those with an interest in politics and power, and those studying military history. I suspect that having this title in the personal bookcase is likely to impress one’s friends, and, who knows, it could also form useful reading for those wishing to enter into a career with the intelligence services! Of all the states of the Middle East and North Africa, Libya has long been the country about which the least is known. It is only in recent times that scholars and the general public alike have begun to appreciate the complexity of Libya's turbulent history including the recent February 17th Revolution in 2011 when protests broke out throughout Libya, demanding better living conditions and more job opportunities. When the Qaddafi regime responded with force, killing scores of unarmed civilians, the protesters called for regime change. In what came to be known as the February 17th Revolution, the Qaddafi regime was overthrown and Qaddafi was killed in October 2011. In July 2012, the Libyan people elected a General National Congress charged with overseeing the drafting of a new constitution and the election of a national government.

Review
The 5th edition of the Historical Dictionary of Libya is written by the same person who wrote the second through fourth editions, the latter published in 2006. [St John] has published extensively on the political economy of developing areas including Libya. It follows the pattern of other volumes in the Historical Dictionaries of Africa series. The alphabetized, cross-referenced entries, on both historical and recent events, people, issues and relationships, comprise the bulk of the book. They provide information on politics, religion, economics, and history. The dictionary entries are preceded by a list of acronyms and abbreviations, maps, a chronology from 1551 through December, 2014, and a short introduction to Libya. There are appendixes on dynasties, government officials, oil reserves, and sanctions. The book ends with a bibliography that is, after an introduction, put into sections on general reference. . . .There has been considerable change in Libya since the last edition. . . . [T]his book is a good resource for those wanting to find information about Libya, past and recent. (American Reference Books Annual)

Review
Harris became the first black woman to work in military intelligence when she joined the U.S. Navy in 1973. She has worked in every major conflict, from the cold war to the more recent challenges of cyberwar, but her particular battlefield has been sexism and racism in the military. She recalls her early desire to join the military despite the decidedly antimilitary mood of the nation because of the Vietnam War. An early mentor, when she was at the University of Denver School of International Studies, was Josef Korbel, Madeline Albright's father. When she joined the navy, there were few women, and they were mostly confined to nursing or administrative work. When opportunities did open up, she had to guard against being treated as a token or being bullied in the male-dominated culture. Harris rightly sees the lessons of stamina and determination learned from her personal and professional life as applying more broadly to women beyond the military. (Booklist)

A revealing look at the inner workings of the United States Intelligence community....This informative and fact-filled book answers many questions the public may have about how our leaders make tactical decisions in times of national emergencies. The behind-the-scenes look at the massive amount of data that must be sorted, and its importance evaluated, boggles the mind. (The Durango Herald News)

A Woman's War is an inspirational story for career intelligence professionals in general and for African American women in particular. A really valuable contribution to the intelligence literature. (Studies In Intelligence)

This autobiography is part personal journal, part motivational speech, part history, and part how women began to play key roles in the intelligence field. . . .The book is full of ideas, advice, historical moments, and life. It is not a heavy read, and can be picked up and put down over a period of time without losing its value. In some ways, it provides a reality check to those thinking of joining the armed forces; for others, it is a story of determination, perseverance, spirituality, and success. (American Intelligence Journal)

Story too big for this book
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
Gail Harris was the first African-American woman to serve the US Navy as a combat intelligence officer. She was one of the first women to become part of US Navy Intelligence. She retired as a Captain - the same rank as a full Colonel in the other services.

How could this story not be compelling? From the age of five, Gail says, she wanted to join the Navy. She wanted to brief combat pilots as an intelligence officer. Coming from a family that was just escaping poverty in her high school years, Gail faced a struggle. She describes herself as introverted and socially awkward, yet totally focused on her goal.

I just wish Gail had chosen a stronger coauthor and aimed for a top publisher, rather than tell her story in a series about professional intelligence. Much of the writing is pedestrian. The chapter titles and sub-headings practically scream for an editor. Worst of all, Harris strays from her compelling narrative to impart simplistic lessons about life. Stories are told out of sequence and gaps are evident. For instance, how did Harris survive OCS? She doesn't seem to be especially athletic. And how did she develop her sense of humor and astute political radar after years as a self-described introvert?

We do get more detail about the role of intelligence officers than I've seen anywhere else. The job is far from glamorous. She seems to spend a lot of time analyzing reports and scrutinizing photos. She does get some great assignments and she gets to work with aviation crews, but she makes her own luck and opportunity most of the time.

The book gets four stars because, despite these flaws, Harris has a great story to tell. I love the ways she found to deal with detractors. Her put-downs are gems, although some would get her written up on harassment charges if presented today.

Harris now is a popular speaker. I wish she'd hire a first-rate coauthor (they don't come cheap) and aim for a top publisher. Her stories deserve to be better known. As she says, nobody knows about her because she's never been associated with scandal. Still she's got some salty stories here. Let's hope she gets a revised book with a broader audience.

well written..women will enjoy this
By Sharon A. Henschen
Gail Harris has captured the essence of a woman's struggle to follow a dream in a man's world. Overcoming chauvinism, stereotypes, and physical challenges, she successfully climbed the Navy's hierarchy. She does a good job detailing the good and the bad of her climb. I'm not a military person, but I really understood and enjoyed the way she documented her path, and I especially enjoyed the tips at the end of each chapter. Kudos to Gail.

A Book for Fathers and Daughters
By Dreamer
I gave A WOMAN'S WAR to my dad, because he's curious about issues like politics and foreign policy--and because Harris tells an inspiring story. But what struck me and my dad most, after reading the book, is the tremendous relationship Harris had with her father. He encouraged her against all odds to pursue an "impossible" dream. Consequently, Harris, a young African American FEMALE, forged ahead into the daunting world of navel intelligence, breaking barriers and creating pathways. She not only succeeded, she excelled.

Harris paints a truthful story of her experience, not just as an officer, but as a human being. The book is peppered with personal incidents giving us insight into her world and the Navy. She allows us to see her foibles and her strengths.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in military intelligence, to anyone who's interested in an amazing woman's journey, and to any father who has a daughter.

H.L. Mencken: An Annotated Bibliography, by S. T. Joshi

Baltimore native Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was an essayist, literary critic, magazine editor, novelist, and journalist. Starting as a reporter for the Baltimore Morning Herald at the turn of the century, Mencken eventually became associated with the Baltimore Sun and his work for the newspaper spanned five decades.

In H.L. Mencken: An Annotated Bibliography, S.T. Joshi provides the most exhaustive and comprehensive bibliography of the writings of H. L. Mencken ever assembled. It presents detailed information on his book publications from 1903 to the present, with a full list of editions and reprints. Most significantly, it presents for the first time a comprehensive annotated listing of his magazine and newspaper work (including more than 1,500 anonymous editorials for the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Evening Sun, and other papers, which have never been listed in any previous bibliographies), a thorough index to his book reviews, and a full list of interviews Mencken gave during his lifetime. Word counts of nearly every item in the bibliography have been supplied, and the book has been thoroughly indexed by name, title, and periodical.

Because every item has been annotated, scholars and students can, for the first time, gain an idea of the subject-matter of all Mencken's writings, especially his magazine and newspaper work. The indexes will allow users to locate any given item with ease. The chronological arrangement of each section allows users to understand the growth and development of Mencken's work, making this volume an invaluable resource.

A handsome, thorough bibliography devoted to one of America's most distinguished literary critics and journalists...
By RNS
A handsome, classified, annotated bibliography devoted to one of America's most prominent journalists and literary critics of the 20th century.

Joshi provides a brief, but thorough introduction, and then proceeds to pick up where the scholarly works of Betty Adler's "H.L.M.: The Mencken Bibliography (Johns Hopkins UP, 1961) [and supplements] and Richard J. Schrader's "H.L. Mencken: A Bibliography" (U of Pittsburgh P, 1999) left off.

Intended to "provide substantive information on Menchen's magazine and newspaper work," Section A is devoted to "Books and Pamphlets" ["information on the original appearances of the materials in Mencken's books"] ; Section B to "Works Edited or Translated" by Mencken, including, Books, Magazines, Newspapers and Articles; Section C to "Original Contributions to Books"; Section D to "Original Contributions to Magazines" [including his book review columns]; and, Section F to "Interviews". The main text is followed by four appendices and a thorough, classified index (a name index, "Titles by Mencken" index and "Periodicals."

Sunand Tryambak Joshi, spent his early years focused on the life and writings of H. P. Lovecraft, earning his bachelor's and master's degrees at Brown University where he delved into their library's extensive holdings of Lovecraft's manuscripts. That interest led to doctoral work at Princeton and his subsequent career as a distinguished bibliographer and author devoted to Lovecraft's life and works. In recent years, Joshi has turned his attention to Ambrose Bierce, George Sterling, and "the California literary circle," and it was in the tracing of connections between these writers that led to his writings on Mencken, which -- in addition to the present text -- now include: "H. L. Mencken on American Literature" (Ohio UP, 2002), "H. L. Mencken on Religion" (Prometheus Books, 2002), and "Mencken's America" (Ohio UP, 2004).

Highly recommended for college and university library collections and faculty/students interested in writing a thesis, dissertation or article related to 20th century American journalism.

The Black Church and Hip Hop Culture: Toward Bridging the Generational Divide (African American Cultural Theory and Heritage)From Scarec

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Black Church stood as the stronghold of the Black Community, fighting for equality and economic self-sufficiency and challenging its body to be self-determined and self-aware. Hip Hop Culture grew from disenfranchised urban youth who felt that they had no support system or resources. Impassioned with the same urgent desires for survival and hope that their parents and grandparents had carried, these youth forged their way from the bottom of America’s belly one rhyme at a time. For many young people, Hip Hop Culture is a supplement, or even an alternative, to the weekly dose of Sunday-morning faith.

In this collection of provocative essays, leading thinkers, preachers, and scholars from around the country confront both the Black Church and the Hip Hop Generation to realize their shared responsibilities to one another and the greater society. Arranged into three sections, this volume addresses key issues in the debate between two of the most significant institutions of Black Culture. The first part, “From Civil Rights to Hip Hop,” explores the transition from one generation to another through the transmission—or lack thereof—of legacy and heritage. Part II, “Hip Hop Culture and the Black Church in Dialogue,” explores the numerous ways in which the conversation is already occurring—from sermons to theoretical examinations and spiritual ponderings. Part III, “Gospel Rap, Holy Hip Hop, and the Hip Hop Matrix,” clarifies the perspectives and insights of practitioners, scholars, and activists who explore various expressions of faith and the diversity of locations where these expressions take place.

In The Black Church and Hip Hop Culture, pastors, ministers, theologians, educators, and laypersons wrestle with the duties of providing timely commentary, critical analysis, and in some cases practical strategies toward forgiveness, healing, restoration, and reconciliation. With inspiring reflections and empowering discourse, this collection demonstrates why and how the Black Church must re-engage in the lives of those who comprise the Hip Hop Generation.

Review
Price has edited a collection of essays on a very important but neglected topic: the generational divide between black churches and the hip-hop culture of young people. The cultural clash was vividly illustrated in 1994 when Calvin Butts, pastor of Harlem's famed Abysinnian Baptist Church, had a bulldozer crush a pile of gangsta rap CDs in a public ceremony, decrying their misogynistic attitudes and the romanticism of gang violence. Most of the essays call for reconciliation between these cultures because hip-hop represents the two populations missing in most black churches--men and young people--as Josef Sorett points out in his essay. The book is divided into three parts: "From Civil Rights to Hip Hop"; "Hip Hop Culture and the Black Church in Dialogue"; and "Gospel Rap, Holy Hip Hop, and the Hip Hop Matrix." The collection represents a diversity of viewpoints and styles, with content ranging from essays to sermons....This volume represents an important first step in research. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE)

This is a timely and fascinating look at the various directions and disconnect that the Black Church and hip-hop culture have had in the past century in they way they have coped with and expressed their concern with racial equality and economic self-sufficiency. The Black Church played a strong role in the civil rights era and beyond in helping to deal with these key issues. The hip-hop culture grew from the disenfranchised youth looking for both support and guidance. Both groups were seeking the same thing but had very different means of achieving their goals. This volume provides essays written by black leaders, preachers, and scholars on their responsibilities to society and to one another. It is broken down into three sections, each with about eight to ten essays: "From Civil Right to Hip Hop," "Hip Hop Culture and the Black Church in Dialogue," and "Gospel Rap, Holy Hip Hop, and the Hip Hop Matrix." The essays address such issues as the transition of one generation to the next, the various expressions of faith, and similarities and differences among the two cultures. The book provides timely commentary, analysis and strategies toward reconciling and perhaps even merging the efforts of these two groups. It will be a useful supplement to many black studies courses as well as of interest to those involved in black ministry. (American Reference Books Annual)

I am truly impressed with the [The Black Church and Hip Hop Culture]’s subject matter and content and view it as successfully targeting two of the most important “institutions” in American society and life involving people of Africana descent today and that these institutions represent best the generational divide. I agree that the Black Church and its reaction to and connection with Hip Hop Culture must be problematized and interrogated. This [volume] delivers on its purpose and mission of doing just that. (Angela Nelson, Bowling Green State University)

In both aesthetic and political terms, the Black Church and Hip Hop have demonstrated voracious muses as they've influenced and internalized the outside social world. Emmett Price's vibrant new collection engages from myriad angles some of the internal discussions—the "kitchen talk"—of these contiguous communities. What they've shared, how they've differed, and where they might go from here is theorized and imagined in intellectual terms in this book but with all the soulfulness of a church mother's moan or a digital loop. Let the church say: 'and you don't stop!' (Guthrie P. Ramsey Jr., University of Pennsylvania; author of Race Music: Black Cultures from Bebop to Hip Hop)
