D. Brian Scarnecchia is the founding President of the International Solidarity & Human Rights Institute (ISHRI). He is associate professor of Human Life Studies and Legal Studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville and is currently a Visiting Associate Professor of Law at Ave Maria School of Law. He is a member of the expert committee of the Rome Forum for Catholic NGOs, and he serves on the Board of Directors and is legal counsel for the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) and is their primary representative to the United Nations.

this is a very good book. If your goal

This book is admirably clear in terms of presentation of some potentially complex ideas, and also admirably comprehensive. For instance, the introductory chapters deal in part with Scholastic/Aristotelian theory of knowledge, and the account is fairly clear and readable. If your goal is a fairly comprehensive summary of Catholic moral teaching, this is a very good book. If your goal, however, is to get some real sense of the actual debate among bioethicists on important moral issues, this is not a very helpful book. Scarnecchia is so concerned to present the Catholic view that alternative views and arguments are given very short shrift indeed, often simply dismissed or more or less distorted. To take just one small but telling example, the work of the very influential utilitarian philosopher Peter Singer is very briefly discussed, but he is inaccurately described as advocating "animal rights," and his idea that all sentient beings should get equal consideration is not clearly explained-- leaving the reader with the utterly false impression that Singer would not say there is any difference at all morally speaking between a normal human being and, for instance, a pig. Rather bewilderingly, we are told that Singer's work inflates the "prerogatives" of animals "at the expense of the poor and the relief of human misery," a claim that should be utterly baffling to anyone even remotely familiar with Singer's fight against global extreme poverty, which is not even mentioned in passing. (It is worth noting that few of the references listed in the discussion of Singer actually mention Singer's work *at all*-- they are almost entirely references to presumably hostile secondary sources, which should lead us to suspect that Scarnecchia's knowledge of Singer's work is limited). This is merely an example, notable for the fact that Singer is at least mentioned and some attempt is made to describe his views. In most chapters on specific topics, such as abortion or homosexuality, there is even less attempt at dealing with real-life opponents or their actual arguments. This is perhaps reasonable, given the nature of the book and its presumed audience, but the reader should be aware going in that this is not, and is not intended to be, any kind of argumentative text, and is rather a dogmatic presentation of Catholic doctrine. So, as a resource for understanding Catholic moral thought, it's quite good. As a serious look at bioethical issues as they are actually debated, it's nearly useless.

The year 2015 marks two significant milestones in Korea's history: the 70th anniversary of the peninsular division at the end of WW II (1945) into the communist Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the non-communist, pro-Western Republic of Korea (South Korea), and the 65th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War (1950). The echoes of these two seminal events still fuel tensions and influence politics in both states. The need for an informative overview of the Republic of Korea's history and the pace of change in both Koreas make a new release of this historical dictionary desirable. While retaining the same format as the 1993 and 2004 dictionaries, this third edition has been considerably expanded. The chronology and the introduction are longer to take account of events of the last decade. The main body has been lengthened from 313 to 525 pages. A number of larger issue-oriented entries (e.g., on education or the economy) have been rewritten, and new entries cover political, economic, cultural, scientific, and military developments during 1948–2014. Significant entries (e.g., on aspects of the Korean War) run longer, to four or five pages. As before, there is no subject index, but boldfaced cross-references and see also references point out related entries. This is an excellent biography of blues genius Willie Dixon and will surely make you want to re-listen to Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters records. It had that effect upon me.

Willie Dixon, the man who made his way to Chicago via working on a boat up the Mississippi River, where he got off in Rock Island, Illinois, is one of the key figures of 20th century American music, and his life, music, influence are well covered in this new biography by Mitsutoshi Inaba.

Many American music lovers think that they know blues, but many of us really only have a surface knowledge. This is the book to read to gain greater insight this most African American of musical genres. The writing is lively, research thorough, and the discography excellent.

Interestingly enough, it is the chapter end notes that are nearly worth the price of admission alone. They are a treasure trove that will have you making lists of recordings to search out, books on blues to read.

IT'S WORTH THE TIME!

Obviously Gail has a great background in sports and writing. As a wife of a former High School coach and a parent of two sons who received scholarships to play college sports, I was extremely impressed by Gail's research and perspective in many areas. SPORTS: THE ULTIMATE TEEN GUIDE is very organized and easy to read and understand. My sons graduated from high school twelve years apart. The second time around was so much easier, and this book would have been a tremendous resource with the older one. There are so many parents out there that have many misconceptions on how to help a young person become a better athlete and prepare for their future. Thanks Gail, you hit a homerun!!!!

Preceding the entries is a 25-page chronology ranging from 1891, when James Naismith concocted the initial set of basketball rules to help alleviate the winter doldrums, to John Wooden's death in 2010. This volume is the seventy-first in Scarecrow’s Historical Dictionaries of Europe series, which began publishing in 1993. Most years have seen three to five new dictionaries in the series, but seven titles were issued in 2009. Covering the history of Greece beginning with the events leading up to its founding as a modern nation in 1830, the volume contains entries for significant persons (kings, presidents, soldiers, politicians, writers, artists) as well as for major historical events such as the Wars of Independence (1821–1828), the two world wars, and the junta that established a military dictatorship in 1967. Also represented are places, institutions, and aspects of culture, society, and the economy. There is no separate entry for the 2004 Olympic Games, although they are discussed briefly in the more general Olympic Games entry. Preceding the A–Z entries are a list of acronyms and abbreviations, three hard-to-read maps, a chronology, and an introduction. Following the entries are appendixes listing political rulers since 1828; national election results from 1946 to 2007; data on the geography, population, and more; and a few economic charts. Excellent Greek Reference Tool for English-Speakers

Extremely informative and concise, as you would expect from a good reference book. Having all the major events and persons of modern Greek history listed in alaphabetical order is Very Convenient! All you need is a name, and you can look it up and get the period of time and historical information surrounding that name or event. As with other reference books, it's meant to help Start your research. In most entrires, names or events that are described elsewhere in the volume are highlighted. I think for English-speakers who are trying to get their bearings on modern Greek history, this is an indispensable reference tool.

About the Author
Michael A. Turner is a political scientist teaching intelligence and national security matters in San Diego, California. He is a 15-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency, where he worked in various analytical and staff positions. He also served rotational assignments on Capitol Hill and the Departments of State and Defense. Dr. Turner was twice the recipient of the CIA's prestigious Exceptional Performance Award. He serves on the editorial committee of the International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence.
