Also covered in the alphabetically organized, multiparagraph entries are figures who have shaped or opposed Catholic social thought, such as Albert Camus and Richard Dawkins. About the Author
Michael L. Coulter, Ph.D., is professor of political science and humanities at Grove City College. He has contributed to Perspectives on Political Science, The Journal of Markets and Morality, Encyclopedia of the Supreme Court, Family in America, and Encyclopedia of American Religion and Politics.

Richard S. Myers is professor of law at Ave Maria School of Law. He is co-editor of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Natural Law Tradition: Contemporary Perspectives. He has published extensively on constitutional law, including articles in the law reviews of Ave Maria School of Law, Catholic University, Notre Dame, and Washington & Lee. He is the Vice-President of University Faculty for Life and the Executive Secretary of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists.

Joseph A. Varacalli, Ph.D., is S.U.N.Y. Distinguished Service Professor and Director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Nassau Community College-S.U.N.Y. very readable and informative

This book was lent to a friend, Joe, who started to random read a few selections. At first...Instead, he spent the entire evening poring over it from cover to cover, finding it very easy to read and full of information. Some facts he was aware of and other bits were totally new. The resource listings are a great place to start for further research. My friend says that this is an excellent book and recommends it highly.

Flury, a music librarian and discographer from New Zealand, has compiled a discography of recorded works by composer Giacomo Puccini. The composer's famous operas have been exhaustively recorded; Flury's organization of such a vast quantity of sound recordings into a coherent and useful product rivals one of the labors of Hercules. The discography consists of 'commercial audio recordings in disc format,' with noncommercial recordings admitted at the compiler's discretion. Even this choice of criteria does not cut the number of qualifying recordings significantly. Listed, for example, are over 450 complete recordings of La Boheme, with about 200 additional recordings of 'Musetta's Waltz.' The operas are arranged by title, with chapters listing other vocal music, chamber music, instrumental music, and miscellanea. Discographical data are clearly presented and follow the standards of such data presentation in, e.g., James Creighton's Discopaedia of the Violin, 1889-1971 (1974) and Ellingtonia: The Recorded Music of Duke Ellington and His Sidemen (5th ed., CH, Jul'08, 45-5911; 3rd ed., CH, Mar'89, 26-3826). A ten-year project ensued, resulting in this comprehensive Puccini discography. On 9 December 1941 Cebotari recorded another group of Bohème excerpts with Helge Rosvaenge, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Karl Schmitt-Walter, with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hanns Steinkopf. Flury gives a complete list of the excerpts that were recorded, and lists three Preiser CD releases as though each contains all of the excerpts (entry 4.326). ... a masterpiece of research highly recommended

This is an exhaustive discography of Puccini's recordings and is well worth the price. 78s are listed with recording dates (at least the year), label number, and matrix number along with releases on 78s, LPs, and CDs. Many discographies often omit live performances as well as many former Soviet Melodiya recordings. As to the latter, a spot check shows many, especially Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, and also gives the label for those.

Occasionally there is an error but it is based on the label information not a result of research. For example, the Bella Voce BUTTERFLY (107.247) is not the Met broadcast listed on the label but is one from San Francisco with Scotto and Carreras. Likewise, a FANCIULLA on Melodram 27081 is not a Philadelphia 1964 performance but the Met broadcast of 1966 with the same principals. But, in a book this massive and comprehensive, the author can hardly be expected to double-check every label cited. He also, rightly, neglects to list several low-quality CD labels such as Encore and Immortal Performances (an inferior label not to be confused with the superb British Canadian label).

The book is a masterpiece and belongs in every operaphile's library. Not cheap or light it is worth having although the several-pound weight won't make it attractive for bedtime browsing. Highly recommended! Now may we hope for a similar Wagner Discography?

This book is a MUST for any opera enthusiast. Not only does it list complete commercial and noncommercial Puccini opera recordings, it also lists highlight recordings and even arias from the operas. Yes, you can see who recorded Che Gelida Manina, Nessun Dorma, etc. The only downside to the book, and any book of this nature, is that it can become dated shortly after its publication. The author and/or publisher should have a website from which one can update this wonderful tome. Perhaps one will be created in the future. Despite this, the Discography is a treasure to own.

About the Author

Slayton (Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt Univ.) has assembled extensive and exciting materials on nine significant American composers. For each―Elizabeth Austin, Susan Botti, Gabriela Lena Frank, Jennifer Higdon, Libby Larsen, Tania León, Cindy McTee, Marga Richter, and Judith Shatin―he provides an essay (he contributes two of the nine), a transcribed interview, analysis of a work, a "coda," notes, a list of works, and a discography. Those interested in researching any of these women will find that the materials gathered offer a good first step in a larger research construct. The "conversations" (i.e., interviews) shed light on biographical and aesthetic issues specific to the composer and simultaneously demonstrate her sense of humor. For example, speaking about her earliest musical experiences, McTee says, "In high school I played piano for the choir, and even when we sang Brahms, I continued to improvise―much to the director's displeasure. I was presumptuous enough to think I knew better than Brahms! Now, of course, I hope those who play my music will have greater respect for what's on the page than I did." The idea to explore the careers of nine American women who have achieved notable success as composers was an outgrowth of Michael K. Slayton’s discussions with a composer who became a friend in the course of his studying her music. Slayton is associate professor and chair of the Department of Music Composition and Theory at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. He contributed two of the chapters, in addition to serving as instigator and editor. The matching of authors with composer subjects was a collaborative process, the success of which is reflected in candor that speaks of rapport and trust. The use of an identical formula for each chapter paradoxically works in favor of bringing out the individuality of each composer. In her foreword, Karin Pendle poses the deceptively simple question 'Who are these women?' and, chapter after chapter, carefully chosen details of each woman’s unique personal and professional lives provide a definitive answer. Also featured is an extensive chronology that begins at 40,000 BCE with the early ancestors of Southeast Asian peoples, and extends to September 17, 2012, when the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released a report of its investigation into the violence of a political crisis in 2010. Readers will find a glossary of common phonetic spellings; a list of acronyms and abbreviations used throughout the book; and an extensive bibliography categorized by subject. Other than a black-and-white map of Thailand at the beginning of the book, no images are provided. Brief alphabetical entries discuss the key events, people, social issues, foreign relations, and policies that make this country distinct. About the Author
Gerald W. Fry is distinguished international professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development, College of Education and Human Development, of the University of Minnesota. Prior to this, he was at the University of Oregon for 19 years, where he was professor of political science and international studies and directed both the International Studies Program and the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. His work on Thailand began in the 1960s and he has spent over 10 years living there. Among his many articles and books is Thailand and its Neighbors.

Gayla S. Nieminin studied the Thai language in Bangkok and does research and technical writing for educational agencies at the local, intermediate and state level. She co-authored the second edition.

Harold E. Smith is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Northern Illinois University. He authored the Historical and Cultural Dictionary of Thailand and then co-authored the first and second editions of the present Historical Dictionary of Thailand.

the indispensable reference -- in paperback

This paperback version of Rev. Mark Harris's book published in hardcover as the Historical Dictionary of Unitarian Universalism (Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies and Movements), is a truly indispensable reference for anyone interested in the history of Unitarians, Universalists, and Unitarian Universalists -- at a fraction of the hardcover's price.

Rev. Harris is a parish minister serving one of America's oldest congregations, the First Parish of Watertown, Massachusetts, which traces its history to 1630. He also is a diligent and careful historical scholar.

His book is organized alphabetically, comprising biographical entries for notable Unitarians and Universalists, as well entries for important organizations and institutions that have played a role in the denominations' historical development.

It opens with an entry on the Rev. Francis Ellingwood Abbot, who served the Dover, New Hampshire, Society of Unitarian Christians - until New Hampshire's courts ruled him insufficiently "Christian." John and Abigail Adams are here too. So is John Quincy Adams.

Rev. Abner Kneeland is here too, who served as a Universalist minister before he was prosecuted by the State of Massachusetts, convicted, and imprisoned - for blasphemy.

All round, I think this is the best reference in print for quick references on Unitarian and Universalist biography.

Critical institutions, organizations, and events are covered too. The entry on Harvard College, for example, describes the controversy surrounding the Henry Ware's appointment to the Hollister Divinity Chair in 1805, which divided Congregationalism and contributed to the formation of the Unitarian denomination.
