Eugene Thamon Simpson is the Founding Curator of The Hall Johnson Collection and is professor emeritus of Voice and Choral Literature at Rowan University of New Jersey.

Landmark Bio on Johnson

Eugene Thamon Simpson has truly written THE definive biography on Hall Johnson. The legendary composer, conductor, and literary writer is given a complete portrait here.
Simpson thoroughly covers all phases of Johnson's life and career, and what it reveals is one of staggaring proportions.
The book is so detailed that, for example, it documents every one of the films in which Johnson's music or chorale was heard on the soundtrack. It lists the vast number of great actors, singers, dancers, directors and producers who were touched by Johnson's work.
His letters and poetic writings are included, along with full discography and photographs. It may have taken a long time for such a biography to come out, but this one's a milestone. Bravo to Dr. Simpson for contributing such a significant work to music literature.

Outstanding bio, seminal artist

Hall Johnson was a genius and pioneer for choral music, period, as well as for African-Americans. Although I'd heard of him as an important composer and arranger, this definitive and lively biography told just how significant. Learning about his famous choir, the go-to group for Hollywood for over a decade, was a revelation. The book benefits from both the author's thorough scholarship and personal knowledge. It does not gloss over Johnson's personal and professional problems, but presents a fair and balanced assessment. Johnson's emphasis on Negro Spirituals being performed authentically and his insights into the genre alone are worth the read, but this bio and study offers much more insight and info. It also provides significant detail on Johnson's extended compositions, which conductors should find helpful. I'd call it required reading for any student of American choral music. Hats off to author Eugene Thamon Simpson.

A definitive biography of a great musician

Hall Johnson's legacy is wonderfully detailed here. Known the world over as an excellent arranger/composer of Negro Spirituals, Dr. Simpson gives us an informative as well as personal peak into the genius of Hall Johnson. There are quotes from those who knew HJ, information of his educational and musical background. the Hollywood years, the coaching, the teaching, the conducting, the Hall Johnson Choir, the Harlem Rennaisance and his part in it... in short, this book belongs on every college music library's bookshelf, should be required reading for any conductor or singer of Negro Spirituals and will be enjoyable for all those who love Hall Johnson and his music. I for one am happy that such a work has finally been completed.
