While there are numerous books on art and exploitation cinema, very few attempt to examine both. Covering the first 100 years of cinematic transgressions, From the Arthouse to the Grindhouse is a collection of numerous essays representing key contributions to overlooked, forgotten, or under-analyzed parts of film history. From cult favorites like Arch Hall Jr. to revered but under-documented marquee names like Lon Chaney, filmmakers both major and minor are covered here.
Starting with a section that pairs exploitation pioneers like Dwain Esper alongside cutting edge auteurs like Erich Von Stroheim, the volume documents the bleeding edge of the high/low cultural divide. Other essays examine the sexual melodramas of Weimer German cinema, explore the concept of Borat as a model for the new standardized cult film, and discuss the films of directors Tod Browning, Pier Pasolini, and Peter Watkins. This volume also contains a section devoted to the idea of "reality" inside and outside the documentary sphere, emphasizing audiences' desire to believe that "this is really happening," whether they're horrified or titillated. Addressing many aspects of "transgression" in cinema, these essays suggest that the distance between the venues and the audiences may not be quite as wide as viewers might imagine.

Review
From the Arthouse to the Grindhouse: Highbrow and Lowbrow Transgression in Cinema's First Century offers an interesting examination of a niche market in the film exhibition industry including exploitation films, sexual melodramas, cult films, and documentaries. A Lofty Exploration Of Highbrow And Lowbrow In Cinema History
By 4-Legged Defender
[FROM THE ARTHOUSE TO THE GRINDHOUSE - (2010) - Edited by John Cline and Robert Weiner] A highly articulate and informative cultural collection of essays concerning the trajectory from how cinema and movie theaters themselves went from one extreme to another through the decades, as well as profiles of certain prominent and not-so-prominent figures within the various genres that determine both art and transgressive cinema, this book will have a decidedly small audience but deserves a much greater one for a variety of reasons. As someone who has cultured a huge illumination in both fields, I learned quite a few things heretofore unknown, which is why I read these books in the first place. I'm not looking for confirmation on my studious intake; I'm searching for new insight, appreciation and historical context to complete the puzzle that has pretty much governed cinema since its infancy, and that's exploitation and transgression in film, though you'll never find a snooty Criterion release connoisseur to concur with that ideology.
The relationship between art films and trash cinema is an incestuous one that straddles a slippery slope and frequently ends up with one foot in each, and this point is driven home in several essays within. As example, post WWII cinemas (especially the smaller ones relegated to B-movies) found attendance slipping after the heyday of Horror films, and began showing inexpensive foreign films to a niche audience. Foreign films were more relaxed in matters concerning sex, were therefore unsuitable for children and, as a result, marketed to adults by hiking up the sexual aspects of these films in ad campaigns along with admission fees. Now being touted for 'adults only', over time these boundaries were being pushed in European fare as more sex was incorporated into the films during the 50's and early 60's, so they were the first to make the transition to even steamier subject matter as the decade evolved and before the MPAA was created in 1968, and then most of the cinemas hosting them logically began to showcase more 'cutting edge' movies and Eurocult oddities that later morphed into porn by the early 70's. So the arc from arthouse (foreign films) to grindhouse (adults only and porno) is clearly established, much to the chagrin of those in the former camp.
There are chapters on early exploitation pioneers like Dwayne Esper ('Reefer Madness', among others), Eric von Stroheim, Tod Browning, Doris Wishman, Lon Chaney Sr., David Friedman, Pier Paulo Passolini, 70's pornstar Jamie Gillis (now how's THAT for a jump?), Arch Hall Jr., Peter Watkins and even Borat (yes, that would be Sacha Baron Cohen's character creation) - is any of this making sense yet? Then get the book, 'cause it all falls into place very comfortably and rationally within. Other inclusions are essays on the 30's 'Erotica in the Service of Social Hygiene' flicks, notorious XXX rated films that went too far ('Waterpower', starring Jamie Gillis), Grindhouse cinemas in San Francisco, New York and Seattle through the ages, the various Mondo films and 'Faces of Death' series, snuff and fetish videos, even the Grateful Dead movie - Ok, here's where the bullet makes as many trajectory turns as those that killed President Kennedy, but it's a fascinating read nonetheless.
The casual reader and admirer of art or grind flicks will find little of obvious interest, as there are no reviews, recommendations or pictures, and doesn't make for good bathroom reading - the subject matter is taken quite seriously and is written somewhat like those doing a doctorate or thesis on these topics, but some are less lofty and lighter in tone. For those seeking to plumb the oblique strategies and obscure angles of two of the most notable and controversial forms of 20th century cinema, this is a much welcomed relief from the aisles of more-of-the-same film books on these subjects most of us have already read too many of through the years, and is a breath of fresh air even though the altitude of this oxygen gets a bit thin at times, making breathing a bit difficult. It's like climbing Everest. (Also of interest is the companion book, 'Cinema Inferno', which I just received but haven't read yet, but I'm expecting the same level of high standard). The only drawback is the incredibly hefty pricetag, but all knowledge comes at a cost... 5 stars for its strength, uniqueness and intelligent contextual framework.
