Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy, by Peter Josyph

Regarded by many as one of America's finest-living writers, Cormac McCarthy has produced some of the most compelling novels of the last 40 years. Through the increasing number of cinematic adaptations of his work, including the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men, and the Pulitzer Prize for The Road, McCarthy is entering the mainstream of cultural consciousness, both in the United States and abroad. In Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy, Peter Josyph considers, at length, the author's two masterworks Blood Meridian and Suttree, as well as the novel and film of All the Pretty Horses, McCarthy's play The Stonemason, and his film The Gardener's Son.

The book also includes extended conversations with critic Harold Bloom about Blood Meridian; novelist and poet Robert Morgan about The Gardener's Son; critic Rick Wallach about Blood Meridian; and Oscar-winning screenwriter Ted Tally about his film adaptation of All the Pretty Horses. Drawing on multiple resources of an unconventional nature, this book examines McCarthy's work from original and sometimes provocative perspectives. Proposing a new notion of criticism, Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy will become a useful tool for critics, students, and general readers about one of the great literary talents of the day.

Review
Perhaps the next best thing to actually seeing Acting McCarthy...is to read Josyph's account of the film in Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy, complete with transcriptions, which is perhaps the main 'gift' this book offers. So of course the book is about 'Reading Cormac McCarthy' (beginning with two masterworks, Suttree and Blood Meridian), but it is also about understanding this Southern Gothic writer and about adapting his work to film. (Southwestern American Literature)

TRULY AN ADVENTURE FOR THE MIND
By Barbara Mann
This collection offers an opportunity to delve into McCarthy's world without the usual bloated academic verbiage. Josyph always confers a one-of-a-kind appreciation of whatever subject he tackles. Each time I have explored one of his books, I have marveled at a distinctive approach that delivers a body of knowledge through connections that are astonishing. In his own inimitable style and in his beautifully written prose, a deeper appreciation, in this case of McCarthy, is realized. Academic scholarship is advanced; the reader who is keen on McCarthy is fascinated. Through active reading, a comprehensive appreciation of McCarthy is generated.

If you have not yet read Peter Josyph, I suggest you purchase this book. You will enjoy his conversations about McCarthy with critic Harold Bloom and Oscar-winning screenwriter Ted Tally. As you read on, you will understand why I suggest that you look into other books by Josyph, such as Liberty Street: Encounters at Ground Zero, or What One Man Said to Another: Talks With Richard Selzer, Library Edition, and his film Liberty Street: Alive at Ground Zero, which also bears the mark of his distinctive personal style.

It is always a pleasure to enjoy literary criticism. McCarthy's vibrant prose is examined in this book in a way that will draw you back to reading, re-reading, and re-viewing his novels.

Highly recommended.

Refreshing and entertaining
By MMadsen
The title of this collection is perfect, simply because it explores adventures in reading the great fiction of Cormac McCarthy. In doing so, it shows what superb fiction can do to us when reading, understanding, and ultimately living with the works become an adventure. Peter Josyph's work is clearly a labor of love and the book appears to be the memoir of a McCarthy adventurer rather than literary criticism. Therefore, it is understandable why the collection opens with a quote by Gore Vidal: "The critical act must ultimately be the examination of one's own life." Adventures in Reading Cormac McCarthy is thus a refreshing addition to the growing scholarship on McCarthy's work and is especially so by being very unscholarly in its approach. While most books and collections of literary criticism seem to follow a set, conventional academic method and approach, Josyph's approach is at times very unconventional but always enlightening, engaging, and, dare I say this about a book that is promoted as literary criticism, entertaining.

Among the highlights are excellent interviews with Ted Tally, who wrote the screenplay for the ill-fated adaption of All the Pretty Horses; Rick Wallach, one of the nestors of Cormac McCarthy criticism, interviewed in a bathtub for reasons forgotten (or repressed) by all concerned; and Harold Bloom, one of Blood Meridian's greatest admirers. Also, Josyph's extensive essays - musings seems a more appropriate word - on Blood Meridian and Suttree will be engaging stuff for anyone interested in Cormac McCarthy's fiction.

A Must for both Cormackians and the Casual reader
By Nick Monk
As with everything Peter Josyph produces this is meticulously researched and beautifully written. The book reveals the fascinating engagement of one artist with another, and is stuffed with compelling material for not just McCarthy scholars, but also those with a passing interest who want to know more without having to wrestle with the arcana and jargon that sometimes vitiates literary scholarship. Josyph is a wonderfully probing and skilled interviewer, and the exchanges with Harold Bloom and Rick Wallach bring the joy McCarthy's readers take in his work to the page in vivid fashion. This is far from an uncritical 'homage', however, as Josyph's acute ear for the nuances of McCarthy's texts do not permit sycophancy nor the suspension of disbelief. That Josyph recognises McCarthy's brilliance, however, is unquestioned and this respect and admiration shines through. This is literary criticism of the old school: wonderfully well informed by culture broadly, grounded in reality, accessible, and a real pleasure to read.
