About the Author
Don McDowell has had a lifetime career in intelligence and related activity, specializing in the past two decades in pioneering methodologies for strategic intelligence and analysis. He lectures internationally and has published widely on intelligence and strategic research, also running several consulting companies and a College focused on distance learning in these fields.

As this book so nicely puts it, intelligence "is both a process and an activity", but also is a final product. So it is possible to speak of intelligence as a process of analysis that produces intelligence products. In the case of this book the intelligence that McDowell is concerned with is `strategic intelligence' which he is careful to distinguish from operational or tactical intelligence (what in this country is called `current intelligence').
What McDowell argues for is a serious program that would be focused on strategic intelligence (or `long term' intelligence as it is known here) production. In McDowell's view strategic intelligence should be concerned with long term trends and broader policy issues rather than specific and limited target concerns that preoccupy current intelligence analysts. He correctly sees the need for both types of intelligence, but argues along the way that strategic intelligence is much more helpful in such governmental and corporate functions as policy formulation. It should be noted that McDowell sees intelligence as transcending national governments to not only local government, but the private sector as well.
Now it should be noted that much of the value of this book is that McDowell not only advocates the production of strategic intelligence, but spends a good deal of the book discussing the analytic tradecraft needed to produce it. It was especially gratifying to see his arguments for all source research as core to strategic intelligence analysis. McDowell not only knows what he is talking about but explains it with startling clarity. This is a book on both analytic tradecraft and intelligence policy that is well worth reading.

Want to know how to approach Strategic Intelligence study this book.

Whilst studying and working on Strategic intelligence I made contact with this excellent book in the first edition and this 2010 edition has grown to still reflect best practice on strategic intelligence. The description and methodology provided by Don McDowell is second to none.
For those who are starting out this is the book for you, for those with experience I'm sure you will have had contact already as you strive for best practice.
The clear and concise modelling of concepts was a really great help.
And many of the suggested developments of strategic intelligence in recent years are also reflected throughout the book.
A great read and a great resource.
