Research on early childhood brain development clearly shows the importance of storytime for toddlers. The repetition of fingerplays, songs, and stories further enhance a child's cognitive development.

Toddler Storytimes II is a source for books, games, fingerplays, puppet ideas, crafts, and other activities that make up a successful storytime. Also included are flannel board stories, poems, and songs with full-size reproducible patterns at the end of each section. A bibliography and discography are provided as well. Easy to use and practical, this book will inspire any reader to put on wonderful, creative programs children will love.

With 25 theme-based chapters, this is a handy resource. Each theme includes book recommendations, often 10 or more, with a nice mixture of classic and newer titles, and a suggestion to choose two or three per session. Words and instructions for fingerplays, rhymes, and songs are provided, while a discography provides melody sources for all songs. Each theme includes a flannel-board activity, complete with reproducible patterns and brief directions on how to present the story or song on the board. Safe and simple crafts ideas are presented as optional activities. Activities are listed by type, rather than in an ordered list, so tellers can pick, choose, and order according to individual style and preference. An introduction provides tips and rationale for all of the types of activities. A couple of sentences note the potential impact on brain development and early-literacy skills, but the focus is on the activities themselves; strategies for sharing early-literacy information with parents and caregivers are not addressed. Judy Nicholss Storytimes for Two-Year-Olds (ALA, 2007) and Linda L. Ernsts Baby Rhyming Time (Neal-Schuman, 2008) provide more comprehensive looks at all aspects of storytime planning and presentation. This update of Briggss Toddler Storytime Programs (Scarecrow, 1993) will be most useful as a resource for programming ideas and fleshing out themes.–Steven Engelfried, Multnomah County Library, OR

Helpful for planning toddler storytime.
By C. Cruse
There are not as many resources for planning toddler storytime programs as there are preschool planning guides. Since all of the books, songs, flannel board stories, and activities have to be geared to very small children it is time consuming to find appropriate books and stories. This book is very helpful in finding the best book titles to use for each theme. I especially like how each theme includes a suggested book to be used as a flannel board story, with the patterns for the story figures included. I have been using Brigg's book for 3 months and so far the books chosen for this purpose have all been perfect for the toddler age group. I had to request most of the titles through inter-library loan since they are older and not available in my library, but the results have been worth the effort. The only problem I have had is that several of the patterns have left out a character that was in the book. I just found an animal pattern in another place in the book to replace the missing character. Overall I am very happy to have this resource for planning my storytime programs.

Woulda Coulda Shoulda been a better resource
By Sunny J. Krugh
I was somewhat disappointed in this book, as I had hoped for a more complete source for (as the title would suggest) "TODDLER STORYTIMES" Although the suggestions for read-aloud titles on a given theme were adequate, the fingerplays and action rhymes were mostly pretty lame, the craft sections lack sufficient illustrations, and the patterns given for flannel-boards are amateurish at best. My biggest disappointment in this book was that most of the ideas, suggestions, and projects were not suitable or actually workable for a group of 2, 3, and even 4 year olds.
