Rudolf Laban: The Dancer of the Crystal, by Evelyn Dörr

Rudolf Laban, the famed dancer-choreographer and 'founding father' of modern dance, also had experience as a painter, sculptor, and architect, and allowed those skills to influence his innovative choreographic techniques. His important works and his creation of one of the most significant forms of dance notation make him an essential component of dance history. Rudolf Laban: The Dancer of the Crystal examines Laban's training, his teaching experiences, and the discovery and development of his principles of form and movement, paying special attention to his choreographic and philosophical work. Author Evelyn Doerr presents intriguing tidbits of the artist's experience, such as Laban's ambivalent position as the 'dance organizer' of the Nazi party in Germany, embedded in a historical and philosophical context, offering insights to his choreographic processes and the events that shaped his life.

The book presents the different stages and elements of Laban's choreography discussing, for example, Laban's "dance-sound-word" instructional approach, his concept of the "movement choir" and examples of its realization, the concepts of eukinetics and choreutics, and a description of how these subjects were taught in Laban's school. Doerr also analyzes important elements in Laban's theories of spatial harmony and of effort, and she investigates his various early systems of dance notation, leading to a detailed explanation of kinetography, Laban's final notational system. A complete bibliography and an appendix of works choreographed between 1897 and 1936 help make this book an important contribution to Laban scholarship and to the dance, theater, and cultural history of Europe in the first half of the 20th century.

Kubrick's Hope: Discovering Optimism from 2001 to Eyes Wide Shut, by Julian Rice

There have been two common assumptions about Stanley Kubrick: that his films portray human beings who are driven exclusively by aggression and greed, and that he pessimistically rejected meaning in a contingent, postmodern world. However, as Kubrick himself remarked, "A work of art should be always exhilarating and never depressing, whatever its subject matter may be."

In this new interpretation of Kubrick's films, Julian Rice suggests that the director's work had a more positive outlook than most people credit him. And while other studies have recounted Kubrick's life and production histories, few have offered lucid explanations of specific sources and their influence on his films.

In Kubrick's Hope, Rice explains how the theories of Freud and Jung took cinematic form, and also considers the significant impression left on the director's last six films by Robert Ardrey, Bruno Bettelheim, and Joseph Campbell. In addition to providing useful contexts, Rice offers close readings of the films, inviting readers to note details they may have missed and to interpret them in their own way. By refreshing their experience of the films and discarding postmodern clichés, viewers may discover more optimistic themes in the director's works.

Beginning with 2001: A Space Odyssey and continuing through A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut, Rice illuminates Kubrick's thinking at the time he made each film. Throughout, Rice examines the compelling political, psychological, and spiritual issues the director raises. As this book contends, if these works are considered together and repeatedly re-viewed, Kubrick's films may help viewers to personally grow and collectively endure.

Review
Julian Rice's...blow-by-blow description of the complexities of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Eyes Wide Shut helps uncover the Jungian sources of Kubrick's perspective. --C&RL News, February 2009

Rice knows the entire body of English criticism on Kubrick, and he writes about the films with care and specificity. Kubrickians should read this book, whether or not they agree with it. -- M. J. Emery, Cottey College --Choice June 2009

Stanley Kubrick, whose film career as a producer, writer, and director spanned five decades, has been the subject of numerous books, articles, and dissertations. In this new analysis, Rice (Deer Women and Elk Men) focuses on Kubrick's last six films and finds in them the hopeful "belief in the redemptive value of self-knowledge." This fresh interpretation, which runs counter to much of the scholarship on Kubrick, is informed by Rice's deep knowledge of the filmmaker's work. Erudite and wide ranging, his book considers the full scope of literary, philosophical, and psychological influences that give meaning to Kubrick's films. Rice reconsiders earlier criticism and draws on close readings of the films along with interviews Kubrick gave over the years to demonstrate the presence of optimism in his work. The six films, from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) to Eyes Wide Shut (1999), are thoroughly analyzed in this compelling new interpretation. Includes detailed synopses of the films studied and an extensive bibliography. Recommended for film collections in academic and public libraries.--Donna L. Davey, Tamiment Lib., New York University

--Library Journal, October 15, 2008

terrifically detailed and original readings... excellent job differentiating the Marines in Full Metal Jacket along the lines of the duality theme... rich associations and allusions...his chapter on Eyes Wide Shut is full of wonderfully observed details and loving attention to color. --Cineaste, March 22, 2009

From the Inside Flap
FROM THE INTRODUCTION: Michiko Kakutani's initial New York Times review of Eyes Wide Shut echoed two longstanding assumptions about Stanley Kubrick: that his "one great theme" was "the intrusion of irrationality upon the orderly, daylit world of logic and reason," and that the characters in his films collectively personify his "deeply cynical view of the world, his unaccommodated view of mankind as a species driven to distraction by greed and violence and its own delusions." Kubrick's confidence in humanity's future may have been tentative, but he was not without hope. Beginning with 2001 his films express a consistent philosophy, a belief in the redemptive value of self-knowledge based on particular thematic sources that he recommended to his screenwriters and alluded to in the films, both verbally and visually. Kubrick's one great theme was not irrationality but rather "Discovery," the name of the space ship that carries humanity to transcendence at the end of 2001.

Nope to KUBRICK'S HOPE
By Richard Masloski
The cover is the best thing going for this book: an iconic photo from "2001" (Kubrick's greatest film in my humble opinion.) It is a still from the movie - but a masterful composition (a prime example of K's photographic origins and eye): Life, Death, Mystery, Beauty, Civilization - all captured in this one film frame. If Kubrick had been born before motion pictures came along, he would most certainly have been a master painter.

Anyway, apart from Devin Watson's wonderfully designed cover, Julian Rice's book is like many another collection of masturbatory meditations on the meanings of the Master's movies. I like film analysis, but grow distrustful of it when an agenda or grand synthesis or TOE (Theory of Everything) is pushed and crammed and jammed into the reader's mind ad infinitum, ad nauseum. As is the case in this book. The subtitle reveals this agenda quite clearly: "Discovering Optimism from 2001 to Eyes Wide Shut." Okay. Kubrick had Hope. But he had alot of other things going on in the films also. And to distill the films simply for these optimistic elements grows quite tedious, quite quickly. In this book, there are certain interesting insights, yes, but many avenues of thought are completely unexplored. (How could someone discuss "The Shining," for example, and completely ignore any discussion involving Lloyd the Bartender? Or make the mistake in believing that Delbert Grady and Charles Grady are "doubles" rather than script mistakes, as they more probably are. Yes, the Maestro made mistakes in his movies! Jack Torrance tears a page out of his typewriter in getting pissed at Wendy's intrusion, yet in the next cut the page is back in the roller. Going back to "Lolita", in the first scene of Humbert's entrance into Quilty's mansion - allegedly empty but for the blanket-hidden Quilty himself - we see a crewman rushing from the scene. Perhaps it is Kubrick himself. Despite the director's legendary perfectionism, he was not perfect: and the first name mix-up of Grady does not denote two separate individuals as Rice believes, but most likely a mistake in scripting.) Anyway - as to "2001" - Rice would have us believe that the monolith-inspired Moonwatcher and Bowman as an old man in a black bathrobe represent human monoliths themselves! It is a stretch. I believe it was more serendipitous than intentional on Kubrick's part, if you buy into the notion at all.

The book also goes way-too much into the color schemes of the films. Enough is enough! The descriptions of colors are especially irksome in the "Barry Lyndon" chapter. Yawn-inducing, actually. I felt like my head was spinning on a color wheel. Kubrick's colors are, of course, vitally important: but Rice gives undue emphasis to the color schemes at the expense of more fruitful insights.

There are really no startling discoveries in Rice's observations, nothing that a careful viewer of the films wouldn't discover for himself. I found the book to be ultimately boring - and made me want to watch the movies instead. And...I suppose that isn't a bad thing for a book on film to do. It just means that the films way outshine the book.

Sleep inducing
By Ms. C
Over intellectualized pretentious blather. The book hyper-analyzes things Kubrick probably never though about. For instance, Rice describes in detail the every movement and vocal inflection of Nicole Kidman in the Eyes Wide Shut bedroom scene as representative of something deep(I thought it was just bad acting). In 2001, the ape Moonwatcher momentarily becomes erect while smashing the bone weapon, author Rice thinks he is mimicking the monolith because he is black and upright. Lots of name-dropping references to classic literature and philospohy. zzzzzz

Good issues discussed but i want more.
By steve
I've read a lot about kubricks movies and i've seen a lot of things discussed that i had not considered much like lloyd the bartender in the shining and color use by kubrick and the meaning of the monolith ans so forth but i would like to see some discussion about the occult in the movies for example alluded to in the shining and in eyes wide shut. I think this is an area that has not been explored but that kubrick was suggesting involves the wealthy and powerful. Now more than ever would be a good time especially with all the exposures and discussions related to the new world order. I think this is an area that needs to be explored.

The Epic Films of David Lean, by Constantine Santas

Widely regarded as one of cinema's most accomplished directors, David Lean helmed such classics as Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, and Oliver Twist. He twice received the Academy Award for best director, and two of his films, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia won the Oscar for best picture. Both are featured on the American Film Institute's Top 100, with Lawrence of Arabia at number seven. Despite the awards and accolades for these motion pictures, many critics often look more favorably upon the smaller films that Lean produced earlier in his career, and in recent years his reputation as a director has diminished.

In this study, Constantine Santas seeks to restore these now undervalued epics to the elevated esteem they once held. Without dismissing the earlier works or regarding them as irrelevant to Lean's evolution as an artist, this book shows that the epics, if analyzed from certain vantage points, are as worthy as any of Lean's previous films. In addition to Lean's Academy-Award-winning blockbusters, Santas also provides close analytical looks at Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter, and the director's final film, A Passage to India.

Santas argues that the epics show a progression and refinement of Lean's work and that they are thematically broader and feature more complex characterization than his earlier films. In his analyses, Santas provides background material on the production of each epic; insights into structure, characters, techniques, and themes; and a look into the relationship between the films and their literary sources. Written in a clear and engaging manner, The Epic Films of David Lean will appeal not only to cinema students and scholars but also to the general fan of David Lean and his work.

Restoring the value of five epic films
By Harikleia Sirmans
As the book title suggests, The Epic Films of David Lean is a detailed study of the five epic films of David Lean, one of cinema's most accomplished directors. Lean won Academy Awards for classic films such as Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. But his career as filmmaker of the epic form took a major leap when he directed The Bridge on the River Kwai, which became an international hit and won seven Oscars. The epic filmmaking phase continued with Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter, and A Passage to India. Despite the accolades and awards, these epic films had "mixed critical attention" (p. xiv) and they were viewed as "Hollywood-financed spectacles" (p. xviii). Constantine Santas takes a closer look at these cinematic works to prove that they are as worthy of attention as Lean's earliest works.

Santas focuses on the epic films after his realization that the epics refined Lean's directorial career. They expanded Lean's horizons by using compelling narratives, broader themes, complex characters, a range of landscapes, cultural differences, and filming techniques. The epics were more complex endeavors because of their greater length, expense, and effort. But they brought Lean the adulation of international audiences and the reputation of "novelist of the screen" (p. x). Lean used the epics not only to entertain large audiences, but also to connect divergent cultures. Despite of their success, the epics received adverse criticism, and critics favored Lean's earlier films. Santas hopes to restore the value of these five epics by reexamining in detail their structure, themes, characters, literary sources, history and politics, relation to earlier works, and critical responses.

Santas has achieved his goal to restore the esteem of the undervalued epics by employing analytical approach and extensive research. For each epic, he provides general background information on production including details on the crew and cast; connection of the epic with the literary work it was adopted from; historical and political aspects; structural patterns and themes; plot synopsis; and characterization. Overall, Santas has accomplished a well-researched, engaging, and convincing work that will attract cinema students, fans of David Lean, and scholars.

Historical Dictionary of Boxing (Historical Dictionaries of Sports), by John Grasso

Boxing is one of the oldest sports in the world, reaching back to the Ancient Greeks, although it has become popular only in the past century or so. But, in some ways, it is a rather complicated sport since – to avoid unnecessary harm – it has been endowed with rules to keep it clean, referees to see the rules are obeyed, and organizations to regulate the sport. Boxing was once largely amateur, although the professional bouts attracted the most attention, but now it is also an Olympic sport. And, over the years, there has been one champion after another who symbolized what boxing was all about, such Joe Louis, Mohammad Ali and Cassius Clay.

Naturally, these champions are the focus of the Historical Dictionary of Boxing as well, and they have the biggest entries in the dictionary section, but they had to fight against someone and there are dozens and dozens of other boxers with smaller entries. More of these boxers come from the United States than elsewhere, but there are others from Europe, Asia and Latin America, and there are also entries on the major boxing countries as well. Plus entries on the rules, on the organizations, and on the technical terminology and jargon you have to know just to follow the bouts. The introduction provides a broad view of boxing’s history while the chronology traces events from 688 B.C. to 2012 A.D. Not all that much has been written on boxing that is not ephemeral, but much of that literature can be found in the bibliography. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the sport of boxing.

Boxing is one of the world’s oldest sports, dating back at least as far the ancient Greeks. Although its popularity has ebbed in recent years, its long history provides fertile ground for a reference source such as this one. Similar to other works in the Historical Dictionary series, this one-volume source provides brief entries on topics throughout the history of the sport.More than half of the entries are for people—primarily boxers but also promoters, trainers, and media personnel. Other entries cover boxing terminology, descriptions of weight classes, and details of notable matches. The time period covered by the book ranges primarily from the late nineteenth century through 2012. The lengthy introduction provides a strong overview of the sport, and a chronology highlights key events from throughout its history. Appendixes cover topics such as the various rules of the sport, lists of Olympic and heavyweight champions, and International Boxing Hall of Fame members. The volume contains a substantial bibliography of books on the sport as well as a list of boxing films. This work will provide a good introduction to boxing and serve as a source for biographical information on lesser-known fighters. In addition, the bibliography will lead interested readers to the best writing on the sport. --David Tyckoson

Review
The main dictionary portion of this book covers famous matches, countries, organizations, venues, weight classes, terminology, and other assorted topics related to boxing. Biographical entries, however, represent the largest category. Of necessity, sportswriter Grasso was highly selective as to whom he included; however, most of the notable figures in boxing's colorful history will be found here, including trainers and promoters. In keeping with the publisher's 'Historical Dictionary' series format, a chronology, introductory overview, and bibliography are included. Thirteen appendixes supply additional information, including 'Nicknames and Ring Names,' 'Revised London Prize Ring Rules,' and 'Boxing Movies.'. . . .Grasso's handy print volume is valuable for its excellent overview. It should join the most current edition of The Boxing Register by James Roberts and Alexander Skutt, and Boxing: A Worldwide Record of Bouts and Boxers, by Herbert Goldman on the shelves of libraries with history of boxing collections. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above; general readers. (CHOICE)

Although many of the basic facts regarding the game of tennis, such as who won major matches, are accessible online, the boxing enthusiast will enjoy simply sitting down and thumbing through pages that reflect a love for the sport. The bulk of the dictionary is the hundreds of cross-referenced, A-Z entries on important boxers, rules, organizations, and technical terminology. John Grasso, a historian of the Olympics and author of the Historical Dictionary of Basketball (see ARBA 2012, entry 798) as well as other titles in this series, writes these in an accessible, conversational style. The entries are accompanied by a historical overview of boxing from its origins in Ancient Greece, a list of acronyms used throughout, a chronology, appendixes (winners/champions of the major events), and a bibliography subdivided by topic. . . .[P]ublic librarians and boxing historians will want to add the Historical Dictionary of Boxing to their collections. Compiled by the director of library services at the Tinley Park, Illinois, campus of DeVry University, this volume presents more than 4,200 key websites in 16 disciplines, touching on subjects of use to patrons and researchers from grade school to postgraduate. Sites included were evaluated for arrangement, authority, currency, relevance, and scope. Each chapter, or discipline, is arranged alphabetically by subdiscipline, with sites arranged in each alphabetically by the title of the site. Each entry contains the site name, URL, and an annotation of varying length. The lack of subdisciplines listed either in the front of the book or as guidewords makes this a hard volume to use without familiarity with the content, and it is also difficult to find where new entries begin on the page. Considering the volatility of websites, this volume would be better as an online resource with regular updating, and with better finding aids included. --Sara Marcus

Medieval Fantasy as Performance: The Society for Creative Anachronism and the Current Middle Ages, by Michael A. Cramer

This book examines the act of medieval re-creation as performance by focusing on the Society for Creative Anachronism (S.C.A.). It describes the group's activities and investigates its place in popular culture, looking at the S.C.A. not so much as a historical society but as an on-going work of performance art; a postmodern counter-culture riff on what it means to be 'medieval.'

Review
Historical re-creation and re-enactment organizations of various sorts have become so popular that they constitute one of the major ways that ordinary people with a deep interest in history interact with the past. Yet the scale, complexity, and variety of this activity is hardly known to scholars, whether they study popular culture or academic history. Michael Cramer here discusses the Society for Creative Anachronism, one of the oldest and most influential of such organizations, and explains in lucid prose why its distinctive mix of re-creation, fantasy, and role-playing has attracted thousands of members over the last four decades. Cramer's analysis will prove useful to anyone interested in or working on the significance of role-playing or re-enactment in modern society. (Steven Muhlberger, Professor of History, Nipissing University)

Michael Cramer's Medieval Fantasy as Performance is a fascinating study of the Society for Creative Anachronism and its fabrication of a conception of the Middle Ages that serves the purposes of recreational medievalism. This is one of the most insightful books on modern role-playing and re-enactment that I know of, and certainly the most entertaining in its revelations of how scholars and playboys turn the imagined king game into an entire way of life! (Daniel Gerould, Martin E. Segal Theatre Center)

Taking a participant-observer's perspective, Michael Cramer vividly describes and deftly analyzes the SCA as a creative synthesis of medievalism and popular culture. Accessible and enjoyable, this book offers new insights into the phenomenon of historicist role-playing communities. (Pamela Sheingorn, Professor emerita of history and theatre, CUNY)

Solid look at one version a modern King Game
By D. Orphal
First, bias acknowledgment. I am a friend of the author and I am a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) that he writes about in this book.

Medieval Fantasy as Performance in an interesting look into a modern historical club that seems unique in it's blending of history, historical myth, and modern fantasy. The club is somewhere in the vast grey area between a living history club (where accuracy is paramount) and LARP (live action role play, where participants act out their characters rather than sit around a table and co-create a novel together).

The intended audience of this book seems to be members of the SCA, primarily. Secondarily, researchers in sub-culture groups would find this survey all they needed about this particular group.

The authors major strengths are his analysis of the Medieval King Game / Harvest King / Robin Hood game and relating it to the medieval-styled martial art engaged by a sizable sub-set of the SCA. While it is not surprising that a group in Berkeley CA created an anti-modern organization. It is surprising that this same group created a feudal, authoritarian regime. The author does an excellent job exploring this.

Perhaps the author is overly focused on the combat and king game played by the SCA. By his own admission, he notes that only a minority of members in the SCA engage in the king game. Perhaps it reflects not only the author's bias ( a member of the SCA and a former winner of the king game ) but also reflects an focus (some would argue over-focus) on the king game by the SCA itself.

Very facinating!
By Sha
I ordered this book to use as preliminary research. As a student of Sociology, I am finding this book opening new views to me about the SCA. The author knows what he is talking about and despite being a member of the SCA for some time, is able to critically analyze the SCA. I would highly recommend this for any scholar researching the SCA, living history groups, collective behavior, escapism and a wide range of topics. I do suggest buying used however as the price is a little steep for a 182 page book. Overall, excellent book and exactly what I was looking for.

There is no sporting event more popular than the World Cup. For one month every four years, hundreds of millions of people around the world turn their attention to the tournament. People call in sick to work, fans pack into bars to watch games or stay home for days at a time glued to their TV sets, and even wars stop. Nothing else seems to matter.

In A History of the World Cup: 1930-2010, Clemente Lisi chronicles this international phenomenon, providing vivid accounts of individual games from the tournament's origins in 1930 to modern times. It features a glossary of terms, statistics for each competition, photos, and profiles of the most memorable―and controversial―figures of the sport, including Diego Maradona, Juste Fontaine, Franz Beckenbauer, Mario Kempes, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and, of course, Pelé. Though other histories of the World Cup largely ignore the United States' contribution to the competition, this volume highlights the progress of the American teams over the last several decades.

Updated with a new chapter on the 2010 World Cup and with profiles of those players who stood out in the latest competition―along with revised statistical information―A History of the World Cup provides a fascinating read for fans of the game.

A bit annoying!
By Matthew bogart
The only thing that really bugged me from the off, is the author insisting using red cards from 1930. Fifa did not introduce them till the 1970 World Cup! The 1954 piece about the battle of Berne between Hungary and brazil stated " Arthur Ellis ( the referee) didn't have time to put his red card away when he had to flash it again" , really???? Please don't invent history! He would have his notebook and he would have ordered the players off, but he did not have any cards to flash!!!! If you are going to write history please don't make it up!!! The author did mention the movie " game of their lives" about the USA team beating England in 1950 , which was the first time I had heard of it and promptly ordered from amazon , it was excellent! This book would have had more stars but for those red cards!

The Last Silent Picture Show: Silent Films on American Screens in the 1930s, by William M. Drew

In 1927, The Jazz Singer heralded a revolution in the moviemaking industry with the advent of synchronized sound in full-length motion pictures. While movie studios adapted their production facilities to accommodate the new technology and movie theatres converted to sound, filmmakers continued to produce silents, albeit in dwindling numbers. And though talkies would overtake the industry and the public's demand soon enough, the silent motion picture did not disappear immediately.

The Last Silent Picture Show: Silent Films on American Screens in the 1930s looks at this cultural shift. Drawing primarily on contemporary records, this book details the fate of an entire art form—the silent cinema—in the United States during the 1930s and how it managed to survive the onslaught of sound. Through the most diverse venues, from tent shows to universities, political meetings to picture palaces, ghetto theaters to art houses, the silent film continued to play an important role in American culture in the Depression years, culminating in the first efforts to chronicle and preserve cinema history.

Through the voices of the audiences, critics, editors, and artists, Drew relates the impact of various silent films, whether new releases, reissues, or foreign imports, on the public and culture of the 30s—how they affected both the popular and intellectual environment and how they were promoted for their audiences. Providing an in-depth examination of the transitional period, which led to the birth of modern film studies, The Last Silent Picture Show is aimed not only at academics but also the large number of film devotees who will discover new information on a relatively neglected chapter of film history.

Review
Best Film Book of 2012

The received wisdom is this: with the coming of sound, silent film was dead. But was it? The Last Silent Picture Show looks at the little known history of silent movies in the decade after their reported demise. Though talkies overtook the industry and public arena, the silent cinema survived the onslaught of sound through continued exhibition in diverse venues including tent shows, political meetings, universities, ethnic theaters, and art houses. This work rewrites film history. (The Huffington Post)

People tend to regard cinema's silent and talkie eras as wholly distinct, but there was a time when the two overlapped―and awkwardly so. As William Drew explains in his account of this monumental crossover period, the protracted gestation of the sound era meant a slow death for the silent generation. Hanging in the balance was no less than the public's conception of what exactly constituted a proper movie. Drew's history ranges far―from the silent apex of Chaplin and Murnau to the almost comical waffling on the part of theater owners, and on to what might be termed the first revival era. For the silent stars unable to make the transition to talkies, the theaters not wired for sound were a boon―or, from another perspective, a haven for the cinematic embalming of essentially dead careers. (Film Comment)

Drew does deliver exhaustive and rather unique surveys of the American press….Drew brings together a number of previously isolated phenomena and the little discussed points of view from small-town America. (Screening The Past)

The Last Silent Picture Show: Silent Films on American Screens in the 1930s examines the dynamic period as Hollywood made the transition from silent to sound movies and into the 1930s when sound became the industry standard and what audiences expected when they attended movie theaters. (Communication Booknotes Quarterly 2011-07-01)

The Talkie Revolution was not the end of silent movies.
By Bruce Calvert
Anybody that knows about film history knows that THE JAZZ SINGER (1927) featured a few Al Jolson songs and a little bit of dialog. Talking films were immediately popular, and by the end of 1929, Hollywood had pretty much abandoned silent films. Hollywood didn't just stop making silent films, but they actually mocked silent films and allegedly audiences were never interested in silent films again.

While that may be the conventional wisdom, author William Drew has explored silent films in the 1930s, and this book is a fascinating read for film buffs. There was one producer/star who bucked conventional wisdom. Charlie Chaplin was considered a maverick when he released CITY LIGHTS as a silent film in 1931. By 1936 when he released MODERN TIMES, he was an anachronism, but both films were wildly successful. Drew starts the story of silent film revivals in the 1920s, where theaters presented "old time movie shows" that presented early nickelodeon films in contrast to slick Hollywood productions. Sometimes they were presented as examples of how far movies had come from their "primitive" beginnings. Other times audiences were actually nostalgic for these early films.

Author Drew has written on D.W. Griffith's films and foreign films before, and these two topics directly relate to this book. The author discusses Griffith's films THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915) and WAY DOWN EAST (1920), which were successfully revived with synchronized music tracks in the 1930s. This prompted M-G-M to re-release THE BIG PARADE (1925) and BEN HUR (1925) with music and sound effects. Cecil B DeMille's KING OF KINGS (1927) was still popular with religious audiences in the 1930s.

The sound revolution did not come so quickly in other parts of the world. Russian silents like POTEMKIN (1925) were already well known in the USA during the silent era. Russia continued to produce silent features, and they were screened in America. However, film societies, college groups or labor groups usually sponsored these screenings. Japan and China continued producing silent films until about 1935, and these were screened in theaters in ethnic neighborhoods.

In 1938, Rudolph Valentino's THE SHEIK (1921), THE SON OF THE SHEIK (1926) and THE EAGLE (1925) were all reissued for theaters. Drew tells an interesting story in that the first one was wildly popular, but mocked as a stereotypical silent film. However, Valentino fans really loved THE SON OF THE SHEIK, whether they were re-visiting him or seeing him for the first time.

One complaint I have with the book is that the author skims over the Van Beuren reissues of the twelve Charlie Chaplin Mutual two-reel comedies. These were also very popular with audiences and were released to theaters over and over. (You can read about these in Michael Hayde's book "Chaplin's Vintage Year".) He also ignored a couple dozen silent B-westerns that were filmed in the early 1930s for rural theaters that had not converted to sound yet. These are minor quibbles though, as I found the entire book fascinating.

The book also covers the establishment of the first film archive, the New York Museum of Modern Art. The archive was important, because it did rescue many, many important silent films. However, the original director Iris Barry, was a snob, so she only saved films that she felt were important. She was instrumental in the establishment of the "pantheon" of great films and directors in the critical world. So for decades film history was all about Griffith and Von Stroheim. Average works like cartoons, newsreels, serials, and westerns were overlooked by the MOMA because they did not fit in with her view of film history. Luckily, there were others like John Hampton of the Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles that kept presenting silent films to the public for a long time.

This book is a must-read for anyone interest in silent films or the early sound-film era. This books covers film history topics that have been neglected for a long time.
