About the Author
David Neumeyer holds the Leslie Waggener Professorship in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. The majority of his research and publications have been on film music.

Nathan Platte is assistant professor of musicology at the University of Iowa. His interests in film music, creative agency, and adaptations are reflected in articles published in Music and the Moving Image, 19th-Century Music, The Journal of Musicology, and multiple anthologies. Having recently co-edited The Routledge Film Music Sourcebook with James Wierzbicki and Colin Roust, he is presently writing a book on music in the films of David O. Selznick.

This dictionary is a ready-reference source of historical information on North Korea from the 1800s to the present. The closest book of its kind is Ilpyong Kim's The Historical Dictionary of North Korea (CH, Oct'03, 41-0695); however, this new dictionary's preface indicates that it is not a second edition of Kim's book, but rather a new work. Hoare, as a research analyst, studied North Korea from outside while serving in the British Foreign Service for 33 years. Then in 2001 he served as the first British representative to Pyongyang, garnering firsthand knowledge of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). This dictionary features issue-driven entries on topics including the DPRK's nuclear program and missile weapons, the Sunshine Policy and other foreign policy issues, important domestic political leaders and statesmen, major organizations, and important events. The dictionary entries feature helpful cross-references that are particularly useful because the Romanization of Korean names can vary, and tends to follow personal preferences. For example, without the help of a see also reference, a Western reader might easily miss the fact that Rim Su Gyong is the same name as Lim Soo-Kyung. . . . This book serves as an excellent starting point for students, researchers, and others wanting to learn more about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Summing Up: Highly recommended. About the Author
James E. Hoare was a member of the British Diplomatic Service from 1969 to 2003, perhaps his most important posting being as the first British representative to Pyongyang in 2001, but he also served at the British Embassies in Seoul and Beijing. Since retirement, he has been busy teaching at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and writing on Japan and the Koreas, this including North Korea in the 21st Century: An Interpretative Guide. He is also the co-author of the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea.

Dr. James Hoare is uniquely qualified to edit this Dictionary as Dr. Hoare was appointed British Chargé d'affaires in Pyongyang after Britain and North Korea re-established diplomatic relations in 2001 after the Korean War, 1950-1953; and his work laid the foundation for the establishment of a full embassy in Pyongyang.

Previously, Hoare had been head of the Foreign Office's North Asia and Pacific Research Group. He joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1969 and was stationed in Seoul in 1981-1984 and in Beijing in 1988-1991.

About the Author
Christopher M. Richardson has worked for two major international law firms as an employment and labor attorney in North Carolina and Georgia. As an attorney, Richardson litigated cases in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) involving alleged discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wrongful discharge. Further, he provided counsel and worked directly with clients regarding a wide variety of employment matters, including issues arising under Title VII Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA), the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Currently, He currently works as a Diplomat for the U.S. Department of State.

Ralph E. Luker has held faculty appointments in history and religion at Allegheny College, Antioch College, Lincoln University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and Morehouse College. He is the author of The Social Gospel in Black and White: American Racial Reform, 1885–1912, which won the Kenneth Scott Latourette Prize and was named an Outstanding Book of 1991 by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights. His work on Volumes I and II of The Papers of Martin Luther King was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Luker’s articles have appeared in American Quarterly, Church History, the Journal of American History, the Journal of Negro History, the New England Quarterly, Slavery and Abolition, the South Atlantic Quarterly, Southern Studies, the Virginia Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. He is the author of the first edition of Historical Dictionary of the Civil Rights Movement (Scarecrow Press, 1996).
