If you have a love of traditional folk music, you will appreciate this book. This is a book about a fascinating character and terrific folksinger. The author goes into great detail about his life and his work. Favored by wonderful anecdotes, this is a wonderful story about the music and the man.

All you'd want to know about Jack

As a fan for 51 years I love this book. The details of what was going on in his life , sometimes monthly, were fascinating to me. Who knows if Jack or his family will ever get around to telling the story, so I'm glad Mr Reinke went ahead and did it.

This would have been a better book with some of his own words

I saw Jack a couple months ago and asked hinm to autograph it. He did, but also told me he was a little miffed at this author who NEVER even bothered to talk to him! Its all from other articles or other people. I've been a longtime admirer of Jack and if nothing else, he is extremely approachable and candid. This would have been a better book with some of his own words

Beethoven is examined as a freelance musician: a vocation whose members were frequently excluded from society and the protection of its laws, including respect for copyright. Viewed in this light, Beethoven's famous quirks and resentments become understandable, even rational. Kahn also devotes a chapter to the phenomenon of synesthesia—a sense of motion through three-dimensional volumes of space—examining how some works of Western music can evoke synesthesia in listeners. He also speculates that Beethoven's creative dry spell in his late 40s was caused by an extended bout with clinical depression. Written for a general audience and including a bibliography and index, this fascinating study will interest scholars and fans of classical music and Beethoven.

A Terrific Book!

This book is a terrific read from start to finish. Kahn gives you a great deal of insight into Beethoven and his times, and illustrates how even composers of Beethoven's stature had to struggle to make a living. You don't have to be a classical music aficionado to enjoy this book.

End Of Discussion

According to Kahn, the conventional wisdom for the last two centuries has been that Beethoven never envisioned his Grosse Fugue as a part of his Opus 130 Quartet-- even though it repeats and amplifies themes from sections of the Quartet-- but rather always meant for it to be set aside, apart, like the aberration it was-- frantic, veering into the atonal, and nearly impossible to play. Best yank it out of the Quartet, and insist it was never in, so no one has to try and play it, much less listen to it..
In the first twenty-six pages of this remarkable and important book, Kahn details every argument for the conventional wisdom, and quotes every expert who has contributed to it, and then gleefully and very entertainingly demolishes them all.
What fun ! A serious scholarly work, decently written !
Having laid waste the conventional wisdumb for all time in Chapter One, Kahn goes on to detail the wretched position of writers of music in Beethoven's day, and then lets us see just what a frustrated, angry, socially maladept guy old Ludwig was (deafness obviously didn't help, but he was well on his way before..).
Whether you share the author's knowledge or passion for his subject or not, you will find yourself getting into this, I promise you.
ps If you listen to the fugue--which I didn't do until I finished the book--
you might think it was written some time between 1940 and yesterday.

Great for teens dealing with cancer, but I'm predjudiced

This is a great resource for anyone with teens dealing with various forms of cancer. I am somewhat biased, however, because my daughter is one of the teens that was interviewed for this book. I can tell you, however, that the stories are real, with very little editing for content. If you work with teens or have a teen going through cancer, this will help them realize that they aren't alone. Teens rarely WANT to join a group of other teens for anything, but this book can help them see that they aren't the only ones dealing with the various effects of treatment and the illness itself. Worth the money at full price, but there are several used books available. Check it out.

Dolan has succeeded admirably in his aim of providing a contemporary equivalent of William Shannon's The American Irish, published almost fifty years ago. It is an informative, reliable and fast-paced narrative that draws upon the experience of a lifetime in the classroom, and is enlivened by revealing anecdotes and apposite quotations. This is an important contribution to Catholic social thought. A solid work by a serious and judicious thinker, it would be most at home at seminary and theological libraries. The centrality of the 1905 Russo-Japanese war in modern history, believes Jowner, is still not sufficiently recognized. He aims to correct that problem with this historical dictionary, which not only covers the battles, weaponry, and personalities of the war, but also the international events and conflicts, agreements, schemes, and projects that led to the war, as well as the political, social, and military consequences of the conflict in the years leading up to World War I and occasionally beyond. About the Author
Rotem Kowner serves as the chair of the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Haifa and teaches Japanese modern history and culture. He is one of the leading authorities on the war, has written extensively on the conflict, and also co-organized a major international conference on “The Russo-Japanese War & the 20th Century: An Assessment from a Centennial Perspective.”

Japan's swift victory over China in 1894-1895, had already forced the West to take notice of this emerging rival in the East. But the East Asian island empire had yet to take on a European opponent. That would be the real test of Japan's military might. It came in 1904, when Japan clashed with Russia over the hegemony of the Hermit Kingdom of Korea and Manchuria. On paper, Russia seemed vastly superior. Czar Nicholas II had a standing army of 1,100,000 men, with a reserve of 2,400,000 men. Japan's regular army numbered 283,000 men and 870 artillery pieces, with 400,000 trained reserves. The Russian paper pre-dominates, however, was worth little more then the paper bearing the flat statistics.

East of Lake Baikal, in Russia's Far Eastern provinces, were only 83,000 field troops backed by 196 guns, along with 25,000 garrison troops and 30,000 railroad troops. For reinforcements and supply, the czar's army had to depend upon the 5,500-mile single track line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, connecting Moscow and Port Arthur, but including a 100-mile gap around Lake Baikal. On the sea, Russia could float 7 old battleships, 9 armored cruisers, 1 old cruiser, 25 destroyers, 17 torpedo boats, and 12 gunboats in the theater of operations. Most of the fleet was based at Port Arthur, which was located at the tip of the Liaotung Peninsula, a prime Japanese target. Four cruisers were based at Vladivostock and two more at Chemulpo (now Inchon). Japan had a modern fleet of 6 new battleships armed with 12-inch guns, 1 old battleship, 8 armored cruisers, 25 light cruisers, 19 destroyers, 85 torpedo boats, and 16 smaller vessels, manned by a total of 36,000 officers and men. The Japanese could match 14 modern capital ships firing a broadside of 37,600-pounds against Russia's 11 seaworthy capital ships with a 26,500-pound broadside.

The conflict, in reality, matched the Russian Army against the Japanese Navy, for with Japan's command of the sea, the East Asian power would put its entire army ashore within weeks-an army that, with Japan's Samurai tradition and the nation's adaptability to modern military technology, was superior to Russia's in training, leadership, and most of all, morale. THE A TO Z OF THE RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR is a well-researched and long overdue book on the 20th Century's first real modern war. The 500-plus entries covers personalities, ships, weapons, battles, acronyms, abbreviations, and a chronology. Further complimenting this text are a listing of military ranks, well drawn maps, war documents, and photographs. This book goes a long way in shedding light on one of history's most overlooked wars.

In over 600 entries on collegiate and professional American football players, coaches, teams, leagues, and executives, Grasso (independent scholar) addresses the history of the sport. Individual entries are up to two pages long and have boldface cross-references to other articles. The book begins with a historical chronology of football and a good introductory essay that should provide novices with a basic understanding of this predominantly North American sport. Biographical entries include date and place of birth and death (if deceased); they offer narrative descriptions of players' football careers without including individual season and career statistics, which are readily available online. Entries for leagues, teams, and universities are particularly well-written and interconnect with the biographies to place individuals in the broader context of the history of the sport. Numerous appendixes include lists of award winners and league/collegiate champions; unexpected lists, such as one for foreign-born National Football League players, are also available. The lengthy bibliography of suggested readings is a nice addition. This book would be a welcome acquisition for most academic libraries. Summing Up: Recommended. John Grasso has authored a compact, yet fairly comprehensive dictionary of the history of American football at the college and professional levels. At the professional level, Grasso includes both American football and its slightly different counterpart north of the border, football as played in Canada. . . . On the whole, this is a very comprehensive effort for what is arguably the most popular spectator sport in North America. . . .Grasso deserves credit for keeping his entries short. For example, the entry on Vince Lombardi, one of the most important figures in the history of the NFL, is less than two pages in length. The appendices provide a wealth of information. . . .This should be a standard reference work for most libraries. John Grasso is an Olympic historian, he has been Treasurer of the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH) since 2004, and is a member of the Association for Professional Basketball Research (APBR), the North American Society for Sport History (NASSH), the Professional Football Researchers Association (PFRA) and was the founder of the International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) in 1982. He is the author of Historical Dictionary of Basketball (Scarecrow, 2010), and Historical Dictionary of Tennis (Scarecrow, 2011).
