Tokyo Rose / An American Patriot: A Dual Biography (Security and Professional Intelligence Education Series), by Frederick P. Close

Tokyo Rose / An American Patriot explores the parallel lives of World War II legend Tokyo Rose and a Japanese American woman named Iva Toguri. Trapped in Tokyo during the war and forced to broadcast on Japanese radio, Toguri nonetheless refused to renounce her U.S. citizenship and surreptitiously aided Allied POWs. Despite these patriotic actions, she foolishly identified herself to the press after the war as Tokyo Rose. An examination of U.S.-monitored English language radio transcripts from Japan between December, 1941 and April, 1942 shows only one innocuous broadcast by a female. Yet in April, 1942 a news correspondent with the U.S. Navy reported that sailors in the Pacific theater routinely listened to Tokyo Rose's propaganda.

This book assembles for the first time a collection of images from American pre-war popular culture that provided impetus for the legend. It analyzes the wartime situation of servicemen, which caused their imaginations to create the mythical femme fatale even though no Japanese announcer ever used the name Tokyo Rose. Using interviews conducted over decades, this dual biography also explores Toguri's character and decisions by placing her story and conviction for treason in the context of U.S. and Japanese racial views, Imperial Japan, and Cold War politics. New research findings prompt a different perspective on her sensational trial, the most expensive in U.S. history up to that time. Misguided strategy by Toguri's defense attorney and her deceptive testimony about a key event led to the jury's verdict as surely as the perjury suborned by prosecutors.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. One of WWII's most sensational stories was that of Tokyo Rose: a Japanese radio propagandist who demoralized American soldiers with stories of their wives' infidelity and impossibly accurate knowledge of U.S. troop movements. The Tokyo Rose story thrilled and horrified Americans, especially when an American citizen, Iva Toguri, was arrested for being the nefarious broadcaster-the problem, the U.S. government soon realized, was that Toguri was forced into the position of propagandist, had not actually broken any laws, and had even helped American POWs. Still, public opinion demanded that they prosecute, and she was ultimately convicted of treason. By treating Tokyo Rose, the Pacific legend, and Iva Toguri, the American citizen trapped by circumstance, as separate people, Close reaches into the heart of Cold War tension. Meticulously researched, Close's case explains not only why Toguri was not a traitor, but also why the American people, in a time of desperation, needed to believe she was. The result will prove compelling and readable for those interested in the Pacific theater, propaganda studies, or the history of the Cold War; though lengthy, Close makes his 500-plus pages worthwhile with a rich sense of context and detailed notes.

From Booklist
Dubbed a dual biography, this personal history parallels the legend of the infamous—and largely fictitious—Tokyo Rose with the true story of American patriot Iva Toguri. Trapped in Japan for the duration of World War II, Toguri nevertheless exploited her position as an English-speaking disk jockey to aid Allied POWs in Tokyo’s brutal Bunka Camp. After the war, Toguri, accused of being Tokyo Rose, provided a convenient scapegoat for Americans eager to point fingers and assess blame. Tried and wrongly convicted of treason, Toguri, an unfortunate victim of time and circumstances, deserves another day in the court of public opinion. Close gives his subject her due by interweaving the straightforward facts of her life with the fanciful mythology of Tokyo Rose. World War II buffs will appreciate this attempt to set the record straight. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
Close's skill as a storyteller compels one to keep reading. (Nichi Bei Weekly)

Dubbed a dual biography, this personal history parallels the legend of the infamous―and largely fictitious―Tokyo Rose with the true story of American patriot Iva Toguri. (Booklist)

Close sets out to tell a 'dual biography' that compares and combines the 'lives' of Iva Toguri, a Japanese American who found herself trapped in Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and eventually became a broadcaster for the Zero Hour program produced by Radio Tokyo, and Tokyo Rose, the fictive temptress whose radio propaganda aimed to undermine US soldiers' morale in the Pacific. Presenting a thorough accounting of both Toguri and Tokyo Rose from their respective 'births' on, Close explores how a variety of forces―including racial hostilities exacerbated by the war, curiosity about the 'true' identity of Tokyo Rose, increasing Cold War tensions, and even Toguri's ambition and nalveté―all helped to forever connect Toguri, no matter how unfairly, to the treasonous (though fictional) broadcaster. Close covers his subject in exacting...detail....Though Tokyo Rose has received a good deal of scholarly attention, Close's very accessible book provides a meticulous history that presents intriguing insights and raises new questions through its novel approach. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE)

I have a new hero
By J. Elnora Welker
This book is a must-read for biography lovers - a double helping, so to speak, in that it's about two lives - one, the real life of a Japanese American woman named Iva Toguri, who was an American citizen, and the mythical creation, a siren/villan named Tokyo Rose. Frederick P. Close approaches both through Plutarch's "Parallel Lives," and brings them both to vivid life as he describes how their identities intersected during World War II.

This is one of the first books I've read in a long time that I absolutely did not want to put down -- even though it weighs in at probably 5 pounds and slightly over 500 pages. Yet despite the sometimes daunting chapter notes, which you really need to read to get a more fully fleshed view, and the books length, Mr. Close keeps the two story lines going brilliantly, peppering them with humor, and often resorting to eloquent prose. Iva Toguri comes into clear focus as a true American hero, not without flaws, but as a woman of integrity. We should all learn from her. Integrity, Mr. Close maintains, is the ultimate weapon we all possess to survive, no matter what hardships prevail. I want to be like her.

Tokyo Rose, who became Iva's own worst enemy, is also a fascinating character, mainly because she's completely made up by all of us, and her transformations and transgressions are absolutely amazing -- we all did a great job of birthing her. I say we, because in the final analysis, humans made her human. There was no Tokyo Rose, and Iva Toguri never even heard of "her" until after the war ended.

Meticulously researched, lovingly drawn (I understand it took many years to write and publish, and Mr. Close himself is to be complimented for his dogged refusal to give up.), this is a moving, exciting, biography filled with intrigue, excitement, and humor, and an historical treasure trove depicting a time in our history that is both uplifting, and chilling.

Biography worth reading.
By Monsieur Mouton
I picked this up on a whim. Having been born long after the `Tokyo Rose' debacle was settled, I'd rarely heard the name and next to nothing about the woman herself. As far as I knew, she was another Lord Haw-Haw putting out WWII propaganda and nothing more. This biography was truly illuminating! Iva Toguri, the woman ill-fated to become `Tokyo Rose,' was the victim of astounding circumstances. `Rose' was not a genuine person, but the unfortunate creation of war-time culture and sensationalism. Iva Toguri, however, was a very real American citizen, who found herself trapped in Imperial Japan throughout World War II only to return home accused of treason. Frederick Close, who knew Iva in her later years (Close goes to great depths to provide, I think, an unbiased biography), has accomplished an incredible feat of research that extends as far back as Iva's childhood in LA, to her hard years in Japan, her American trials, and beyond her attempt for appeal. Toguri's biography is paired, as the title notes, with the biography of `Tokyo Rose,' delving into the myth's creation and continuing survival. There is a great wealth of detail and information of both subjects here, as well as a plenitude of research on the people, places, and events Iva encountered throughout her long life. A well-written and entertaining look into the culture of WWII and a woman trapped by circumstance.

The Definitive Bio on Iva Toguri
By dwood78
Several years ago, I remember my local library had this book, only to have someone check it out without ever returning it.

Now with the 2nd Edition out, my library once again got this book, & this time I managed to read it.

That said, this is the best book on the life of Iva Toguri, a Nisei who went to Japan to check on her sick aunt, but due to circumstances out of her control, she was stranded there after Pearl Harbor. To her credit, she refused to give up her US citizenship, as Japanese military government demanded of her & other Japanese Americans living in Japan. The book also explores the origins of the name "Tokyo Rose", a phrase which neither Toguri nor her fellow broadcasters at Radio Tokyo (today's NHK) used- it was a generic term used by the Allies in the Pacific for all Japanese female broadcasters..

Speaking of female broadcasters, this book also introduces us to Myrtle Liston, a Filipina who did propaganda broadcasts for the Japanese in the Philippines (which was then US territory) & was called "Manila Rose." Despite being involve in such broadcasts, she was never charged with anything & died in obscurity in 1982.

As for Toguri's involvement, on "The Zero Hour" it was because she was trying to make a living as her refusal to give her US citizenship made her an enemy alien & was barred from getting a war ration card. She agreed to do the show only after the show's producers (who were Allied POWs) promised her that she wouldn't broadcast anything that could hurt Allied morale & used the income to seek in food to imprisoned POWs. In the end, the Occupation Forces let her go (after she spent a year in jail) without charge, only to come back to a country which still harbors anti-Japanese bigotry & with a President (Truman) seeking reelection, had his DOJ charged her with treason. That trial is well detailed in this book, as is the aftermath & the attempts to pardon her-which only really took out after it became clear that some of the witnesses perjured themselves by order of the DOJ obsessed with getting a guilty verdict.

All in all, a really good, well written book. It's sadden that Toguri's life was ruined by the country she loves. Even in death, she's still seen by some as a traitor, rather than a real American patriot (the fact that months before her passing, the World War II Veterans Committee gave her their annal Edward J. Herlihy Citizenship Award should prove her loyal to this country). Iva Toguri was & is a real American patriot-even more so in my book than many of the people who went after her. A must read book.

Historical Dictionary of Baroque Music (Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts), by Joseph P. Swain

Although it lies far back, running roughly from about 1600 to 1750, the Baroque period is far from forgotten and Baroque music is played widely today as well, exercising numerous musicians and attracting rather substantial audiences. It experienced the emergence of a new sort of music, increasingly secular and increasingly good listening, if you will, and also the start of opera. Some of the Baroque composers appear among the most popular of all time, such as Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. So yes, this is a book for researchers, but it is also a good book for anyone who enjoys this music.

The Historical Dictionary of Baroque Music certainly fills a significant space in the whole sub-series on music, since it tells us much more not only about the music but also the age that generated it. This is done particularly well in an insightful introduction, with the flow of events traced by the chronology. The dictionary section fills in the missing details with over 400 entries on the most important composers and musicians, some of the musical works themselves, important places and institutions, and a smattering of technical terms. The bibliography directs us to further reading.

Review
As a longtime teacher and director of early music, Swain undoubtedly knows his subject matter. The 400-plus brief entries in this dictionary, ranging from one sentence to two pages, cover the European baroque era, 1600-1750. Approximately half focus on historical individuals, primarily composers, and another fifth deal with genres of composition such as cantatas. About 50 entries define period terms, although the author assumes readers will have a basic musical knowledge. The remaining entries are a mixture of institutions, works, places, and instruments. Numerous cross-references are boldfaced throughout, with some see also references appended to entries. Additionally, Swain includes a baroque chronology for the 1526 to 1920 period, a 19-page overview essay, and a 44-page unannotated secondary bibliography. Perhaps the only drawback to this otherwise well-done volume is the paucity of illustrations. Although most of the definitions and biographies here are found in a combination of general reference works--ranging from The Oxford Dictionary of Music, edited by T. Rutherford-Johnson, M. Kennedy, and J. Kennedy (6th ed., 2012), to The Harvard Dictionary of Music, edited by D. M. Randel --Swain's single-volume compendium is handy for students of the era. Summing Up: Recommended. All comprehensive academic music collections supporting graduate students and above. (CHOICE)

Joseph Swain, an organist and teacher of music history at Colgate University, authored his second historical dictionary. This dictionary provides basic information about traditions, persons, compositions, places, terminology, and institutions of Baroque music—music that dominated Western Europe from about 1600 to 1750. Nearly half of the entries are biographical, mostly composers, but the author also describes theorists, critics, and poets. . . .Another one-fifth of the entries are Baroque era genres—concerto, cantata, opera seria, and more. Other areas covered are techniques (e.g., figured bass, double dotting), theoretical terms (e.g., inversion, counterpoint, continuo, Baroque pitch), instruments (e.g., harpsichord, bassoon, theorbo), and places (e.g., Venice, Vienna, London, Paris). Swain gives titles of compositions in modern English form; for example, Art of Fugue and Christmas Oratorio. He presents detail lists of J. S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos; some works are known by their work numbers, such as Opus 3, a set of 12 concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, and Opus 6, 12 concerti grossi by Arcangelo Corelli. Swain lists dramatic works by several composers, including George Frideric Handel, Francesco Cavalli, Claudio Monteverdi, and Jean Baptiste Lully. Treatises, such as Gradus ad Parnassum (Johann Joseph Fux) and Traite de l' Harmonie (Jean Philippe Ramaeu) are given in their original languages. Swain also presents examples in musical notation. Most entries provide a sufficient, yet succinct, first source for users. See references are numerous and given in bold font. The chronology is of events outside of births (pp. xv-xxix). The bibliography is extensive and well organized, and is presented in great detail. The Historical Dictionary of Baroque Music serves as a quality ready-reference source, with resources cited for those seeking more detailed information. (American Reference Books Annual)

Post-9/11 Cinema: Through a Lens Darkly, by John Markert

In contemporary society, cinema has become a primary way in which people gain knowledge about events taking place in the world. Films often go beyond news reports by showing in-depth, behind-the-scenes footage, whether in a documentary or recreated in fictional features. More than fleeting scenes of events shown on the nightly news, a film can influence people's feelings about war and what our political leaders should do about it. This has certainly been the case since the attack on 9/11 and the subsequent incursions into Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Post-9/11 Cinema: Through a Lens Darkly, John Markert takes a close look at the films depicting these events. Covering cinematic portrayals of 9/11 and the attacks that followed, this book examines both dramas and documentaries that depict what some have termed "Bush's war," as well as rebuttal films, films about terrorist activities, and films seen from the vantage point of journalists and military personnel. Post-9/11 Cinema not only shows how motion pictures reflect societal values but also how such works can influence social attitudes and thus promote change. In addition, Markert appraises the film industry and critiques how images are manipulated to sway the viewer to appreciate the side being advocated.

Examining such dramas as The Messenger, Stop-Loss, The Lucky Ones, In the Valley of Elah, and The Hurt Locker, as well as documentaries including Fahrenheit 9/11, Soldiers of Conscience, and Taxi to the Dark Side, Post-9/11 Cinema is a valuable read for professors of media and mass communication, popular culture, and film studies, as well as cultural sociologists.

Review
Films can both reflect and shape social values. Markert (sociology, Cumberland Univ.) examines over 200 films depicting American concerns after the 9/11 attacks. In the first few years, films tended to focus on the attacks themselves and on America's enemies. By 2004, post 9/11 films—both dramatic and documentary—looked at the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well, and were more critical of American actions abroad and Bush administration policies. Working from his sociological approach, Markert also provides an overview of American films since World War II that have been related to issues of war and security. This volume does not focus specifically on the details of 9/11 itself, but will be of interest to readers interested in cultural, communication, or film studies. (Library Journal 2011-09-01)

Sociologist Markert (Cumberland Univ.) examines 210 feature-length films and documentaries depicting 9/11 and the subsequent military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. He divides these films into three categories: dealing with the enemy; depicting 9/11 events; and, the largest category, the war on the ground. Markert begins with a discussion of reflection/refraction theories exploring the extent to which film both mirrors and shapes societal values and attitudes. Next comes a dialectical film analysis focusing on three time periods: early post-9/11 films appearing between 2001 and 2004, which are primarily concerned with demonizing the enemy and commemorating the heroics of the victims and those rendering assistance; a transitional period between 2004 and 2005, when films began providing an alternative interpretation of the war; and finally, post-2006 films, of which the vast majority provide a darker, more critical, nuanced analysis of US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. While it is difficult to argue that films changed social attitudes, Markert demonstrates how films, especially documentaries, contributed to the public debate by maintaining interest and providing a dissenting perspective that eventually countered the war on terror and weapons of mass destruction rhetoric of the Bush administration. A welcome addition to mass media, film studies, and cultural sociology collections. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. (CHOICE)

Encyclopedia of National Anthems, by Xing Hang

Since the appearance of the first edition of the Encyclopedia of National Anthems in 2003, many new events and situations have radically redrawn the political boundaries of the world map and redefined the policies and goals of individual nation-states from Nepal to Afghanistan, Mozambique to Montenegro. All of these shifts have entailed the creation or adoption of new anthems or the modification of existing ones. This revised and expanded edition of the Encyclopedia of National Anthems not only makes the long-overdue updates to the national anthems of the world but also improves upon the quality and accuracy of the music sheets and historical backgrounds through consultation with a greater number and wider variety of source materials.

Every political entity with non-Latin script now has its original lyrics documented in the book, while English translations have been modified to better express meaning and intent. Flags and maps have been added to the country fact sheets to provide a visual complement to the text. In addition to current sovereign countries, this edition includes in separate sections the anthems of international organizations; of Kosovo, South Ossetia, and other non-UN states; and of extinct countries, such as the former Soviet Union and East Germany. This collection does not adhere to any political stance but instead reflects the contested and complicated nature of the modern nation-state, whose boundaries remain fluid and ever subject to change.

This new edition of the Encyclopedia of National Anthems is an indispensable reference source for students and academic scholars for school projects and academic research initiatives. Libraries will find the new edition a valuable addition to their collections, as will government and diplomatic missions requiring a handy reference for international exchange. For the casual reader, this compilation also provides a wealth of resources that both inform and entertain.

From Booklist
This revised edition of Encyclopedia of National Anthems (2004)—necessary because of changing world events and various country boundaries being redrawn—contains anthems of the 193 countries and international entities of the world. A great resource of information from a historical and music-performance perspective, this set is divided into four sections: “International Organizations and Movements,” “United Nations Members and Observers,” “Non–United Nations Entities,” and “Extinct States.” Entries consist of a black-and-white map and/or a flag of the country or entity and a brief fact box about the country, followed by a paragraph detailing author and composer information, historical background, and lyrics in the original language of the country, along with the English translation. The sheet music for each anthem finishes each entry. Volume 2 contains notes and a bibliography. The bibliography is in alphabetical order, containing monographs, periodical articles, and websites. Many of these national anthems can be found by conducting a YouTube search. The information available in the Encyclopedia of National Anthems is well presented and documented, and it is recommended for school, academic, and public libraries. --William Garrett

Review
This revision to the 2003 edition is based upon a greater number and variety of sources than the earlier work, with the aim of providing more accurate content. It incorporates information on alterations to political regimes occurring over the last decade, as such changes have transformed national identities and, in turn, national anthems. Anthems of international organizations and countries of, for example, the former Soviet Union, are also included. Each entry, under five pages, now includes maps, flags, national demographics, and brief anthem histories. As before, lyrics appear in the nation’s dominant language, Latinized; then in the native alphabet; and, finally, in English translation. Sheet music, uniting melody and lyrics, closes each entry. The written material offers enlightening national sketches.
(Library Journal)

Xing Hang (history, Brandeis Univ.) has expanded the second edition (1st ed., CH, May'04, 41-5040) of this encyclopedia considerably. Several large categories of anthems are represented: international organizations and movements; members and observers of the United Nations; non-UN entities; and extinct states....The volume is arranged by country, and the newly added works in non-Latin script make available even more music. A fact box displays information about a specific country, along with a map and flag. The text section provides information about the composers and lyricists, and discusses the adoption of the anthem. Translations of foreign lyrics are included....Detailed endnotes are included. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers. (CHOICE)

Gr 9 Up–Updating the 2003 edition, this work reflects intervening changes in nations and anthems and provides improved sheet music and historical coverage. Entries include information on most of the sovereign countries of the world and feature a black-and-white or color map of the nation and its flag; a box detailing basic data such as the official languages, GDP, and holidays; at least a paragraph of background; the lyrics of the anthem in the native language and in English; and sheet music. Entries are arranged in sections covering “International Organizations and Movements,” “United National Members and Observers,” “Non-United Nation Entities,” and “Extinct States”; and within those, alphabetically by country. This set will help students researching countries and cultures. (School Library Journal)

This encyclopedia serves as a quick and useful source for nearly 200 national songs.

The A to Z of Old Time Radio (The A to Z Guide Series), by Robert C. Reinehr, Jon D. Swartz

The term Old Time Radio refers to the relatively brief period from 1926, when the National Broadcasting Company first began network broadcasting, until approximately 1960, when television became the dominant communication medium in the United States. During this time, radio was as popular and ubiquitous as television is today. It was amazingly varied in the types of programming it offered; many characters and programs were so popular that virtually everyone was familiar with them. Even today, recorded versions of these programs are still extremely popular and widely available, both from commercial outlets and from hobbyists. Behind the production of these programs was a complex technological and financial infrastructure that had to be developed virtually from scratch in a world unaccustomed to the rapid communication and technological marvels that we take for granted today.

The A to Z of Old Time Radio provides essential facts and information on the Golden Age of Radio. This is accomplished through the use of a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the radio networks, programs, directors, producers, writers, actors, radio series, and radio stations. Entries on your favorite shows―The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, Dragnet, and Suspense―and actors―Bob Hope, George Burns, Gracie Allen, and Edgar Bergen―will have you jumping from one entry to the next as you relive old favorites and discover hidden treasures from the Golden Age of Radio.

An alphabetical encyclopedia of Radio Stars, Shows and everything in-between.
By JAS
An excellent resource guide for fans of old-time radio shows from the 30's - 40's - 50'. Almost every network show and star are listed with the mini-biography or story behind each one. There were a few that weren't listed, especially announcers, but the book is so large and packed full I imagine if they included everyone, it would turn into a 2 volume set. I keep it near me whenever I'm listening to radio shows. A definite keeper (If you like old-time radio)

Journalism in the United States: Concepts and Issues, by Edd Applegate

"Print and broadcast journalism in the United States have changed in recent years as a result of millions of people using the Internet and social media for obtaining some or most of the information they desire." So notes professor of journalism Edd Applegate, who, after surveying the decline in circulation and advertising revenues of newspapers and broadcast and radio news stations and the rise of cable news and website journalism, outlines in Journalism in the United States: Concepts and Issues the effect of this sea of change on key matters in journalism today.

In this work, Applegate updates readers on the current conditions of the print and broadcast industries with chapters on a variety of topics, from theories of the press to the structure of the print and broadcast industries, from the role of advertising and public relations to the role of the changing view of the press' views of and commitments to objectivity and "news balance." Throughout, Applegate obliges readers to wrestle with how the change in medium, from print or broadcast to Web, is not the main culprit in how the news has changed. Instead, he illustrates how many of the core issues remain unchanged and what is needed is a more complex analysis of core concepts and issues and how these have been affected-from freedom of the press to the treatment of minorities-by the evolution of news as a business and the education of journalists today for that business.

With a selected bibliography and an index to assist the reader, this book is a wonderful text for upper-level undergraduates, graduates, and college faculty with journalism or mass communications courses, as well as for academic libraries.

The A to Z of African American Cinema (The A to Z Guide Series), by S. Torriano Berry, Venise T. Berry

On 4 July, 1910, in 100-degree heat at an outdoor boxing ring near Reno, Nevada, film cameras recorded-and thousands of fans witnessed-former heavyweight champion Jim Jeffries' reluctant return from retirement to fight Jack Johnson, a black man. After 14 grueling rounds, Johnson knocked out Jeffries and for the first time in history, there was a black heavyweight champion of the world. At least 10 people lost their lives because of Johnson's victory and hundreds more were injured due to white retaliation and wild celebrations in the streets. Public screenings received instantaneous protests and hundreds of cities barred the film from being shown. Congress even passed a law making it a federal offense to transport moving pictures of prizefights across state lines, and thus the most powerful portrayal of a black man ever recorded on film was made virtually invisible.

This is but one of the hundreds of films covered in The A to Z of African American Cinema, which includes everything from The Birth of a Nation to Crash. In addition to the films, brief biographies of African American actors and actresses such as Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, Halle Berry, Eddie Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, Denzel Washington, and Jamie Foxx can be found in this reference. Through a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, appendixes, black-&-white photos, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on actors, actresses, movies, producers, organizations, awards, film credits, and terminology, this book provides a better understanding of the role African Americans played in film history.
