About the Author
Darryll Grantley has spent 26 years teaching theatre history at the University of Kent, and also amassing numerous facts for this fact-filled volume. In his courses, he covers all periods of British theatre, with an emphasis on the late medieval and early modern periods. In this time, he has written numerous articles and authored, edited or contributed to over a dozen books, including London in Early Modern Drama, The Cambridge Companion to Medieval English Theatre and The Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare and his Contemporaries.

I find this volume an excellent reference to the conflict in Northern Ireland.

I've had a passing interest in the NI conflict since the late 70's, though that was mostly following the sectarian paramilitaries and security forces in the news, a book or two on the IRA, and a book on the psychological effects of the conflict on the children of "the Troubles".

I prefer the bold text method of cross-referencing within the text, to the use of '(q.v.)'; it seems more modern and stands out better. This A to Z guide contains enough entries to make it the premier guide to the conflict, but the reader might be slightly annoyed if they feel something should have been included. For instance, there is no entry for "Johnny Adair", or "Joe McCann", but then there's Google; and writers, and publishers are often constrained to fit Information into a limited space.

Altogether a great reference source to "the Troubles".

The Egyptian Christian Dictionary

I have a lot of Copitic friends and I found this book via helpful understanding their faith and terminology. There is a nice Chronology in the front of the book that gives some historical understanding of the establishment of the Coptic faith in Egypt which seems to trace about 120 AD. By 189 Patriarch (Orthodox head of Church) Demetrius was already appointing bishops and there is even a mention of the Great Egyptian Monk Antony himself. After that it is a straight dictionary with lots of "bold" nouns so you can read more about the particular person, word or relic. I found that helpful as I was forever thumbing from one part to another, and i think that they should have included thumb letters to make this easier since it is a dictionary.

The author is the former director of the Coptic Museum in Cairo and editor of the St Mark Foundation for Copitc History. There are numerous contributors as well, most non-Egyptian and very thoroughly bibliography in the back as well. I've enjoyed using and learning about Coptic faith, and would recommend it to anyone else who also wants to explore a Christian Middle Eastern faith.
