This fourth edition marks Owusu-Ansah's third contribution as the author of this dictionary in 19 years. The third edition was published in 2005, and the second, with Daniel McFarland, in 1995–constituting rapid-fire succession for this African series. Nearby Benin (Historical Dictionary of Benin, by M. Houngnikpo and S. Decalo, 4th ed., and Burkina Faso (Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso, by L. Rupley et al., 3rd ed., went 18 and 15 years between editions, respectively. The overall size of this new volume is not much larger than the last; however, nine years of events and personalities have been added, for a total of 900-plus entries. Additionally, some older entries were updated, reedited, or removed altogether. About the Author

Varner, author of several previous historical dictionaries focusing on American literary genres, takes a broad chronological view of and an international approach to his topic of Romanticism in literature. With an informative introduction, a detailed chronology, and an extensive bibliography, Varner whets readers' appetites for more detail. The British Romantics receive the most space, but Varner does not neglect German, American, French, Spanish, and Russian writers. His dictionary reflects a wider range of writers than the anthologies of 30 or 40 years ago. Women are well represented and given significant coverage as are some lesser-known Continental and British male writers, making this dictionary a source for discovery as well as reinforcement. Students would do well to have this volume at hand while studying, so it seems fitting that it should circulate rather than be confined to reference shelves. Ample cross-references mean that one can follow a satisfying and informative path through the book without regard for the alphabetical arrangement. About the Author

This second edition is an update and expansion of the first, written by Anne Salda (1997), and draws on scholarly studies of the World Bank and on publications by the bank itself. Entries are generally clear and concise and range from a single paragraph to several pages in length. The authors claim to use the same language as any original source document whenever possible. Within an entry, terms in boldface are cross-references that indicate other entries in the dictionary. See also references are in all caps and signify other entries or terms that are related to or on the same topic as the entry (but not used in the entry). Also included are a brief chronology of important dates in the bank's history–from its founding in 1944 through 2012–and a list of acronyms and abbreviations. The introduction is a brief history of the bank. Readers will find a very extensive, 120-page bibliography of selected World Bank publications. As the book notes, many World Bank publications and a collection of data and statistics are available for free at Documents and Reports and The World Bank Open Data, respectively. Tenney (The Citadel) is a former International Monetary Fund staff member; Salda formerly worked for the Joint Bank-Fund Library. Summing Up: Recommended. About the Author
Sarah Tenney has worked for many years with the International Monetary Fund and also for the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings and is presently assistant professor of political science at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. She is the author of the companion volume Historical Dictionary of the International Monetary Fund.

Anne C. Salda, the author of the first edition, was a staff member of the Joint Bank-Fund Library in Washington, D.C. from 1966 until her retirement in 1987. As the Library's Bibliography Librarian, she was responsible for its monthly list of periodical articles, and its collection of research papers. At present she is focusing on the bank’s efforts to adapt its existing policies and practices to meet the needs of its new members in a changing world.

Marius S. Vassiliou is well positioned to have undertaken the compilation of this volume. He graduated from Harvard and then went on to earn a Ph.D, in geophysics from Caltech, an M.B.A. from the University of California in Los Angeles, and an M.S. in computer science from the University of Southern California.

Historical Dictionary of the Petroleum Industry is a useful reference tool for libraries and oil companies as well as for people working in the oil industry or in universities. The volume presents a systematic compilation of important events, places, people and institutions. Except for the seven mentioned above, that have shaped the modern petroleum industry worldwide. Outstanding!

This monumental historical dictionary of companies, people, places and events in the petroleum industry belongs in every college and university library, every public library, and in the company library of every firm in the industry. The 400+ well-written, information-rich entries in this 663-page dictionary feel like 4,000. They are encyclopedic and packed with cross-references. The dictionary also contains 14 appendices containing tables and charts. Typographically, the dictionary is beautiful. The dictionary was written by a former research geophysicist at ARCO Oil who has a PhD in geophysics from Caltech and an MBA from UCLA.

There is no doubt that the Civil War era is a complex, multifaceted period in U.S. history. In what could serve as a complementary volume to the recently published second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Civil War (2011), Richter ably delves into the political side of the quagmire in his second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Civil War and Reconstruction. The nearly 1,000-page tome offers a lengthy chronology of Civil War–related happenings covering the latter half of the nineteenth century, an explanatory introduction that serves to prove that there was much more to the Civil War period than the armies and the battles they fought, a dictionary section with in excess of 800 entries, a collection of appropriate primary source documents, and a well-organized, 132-page select bibliography. From Carpetbaggers to Scalawags, Abolitionists to the Ku Klux Klan, and Lincoln to Davis, readers will gain a solid understanding of the political aspects entwined with the Civil War and Reconstruction. Researchers will be able to use Richter’s terrific bibliography as a jumping-off point to a deeper probing of related topics. Although the Civil War was largely a somber period in history, Richteris not averse to infusing a bit of his sense of humor into his writing. For example, in describing Union general and later politician Daniel Sickles, Richter writes that Sickles was “generally an all-around man’s man or a jerk, depending on one’s point of view.” The infusion of apt lightheartedness helps to reinforce the humanity behind the people and events of history. As is the case with the other titles in the Historical Dictionaries series, Richter’s most recent effort is comprehensive and clearly written.
