Review
Spaulding's passion for storytelling is evident as she shares the skills she has learned over the years. She repeatedly drives home the importance of traditional stories and the hard but rewarding work required to tell them well. She offers practical advice on selecting and learning stories, matching the story to the audience, and avoiding common performance pitfalls. Particularly valuable is an overview of the many story types paired with her extensive "Storiography."...The presentation is conversational, filled with personal insights, interesting quotes, and thorough documentation. Librarians building their storytelling collections and honing their skills will want this book. (School Library Journal)

Books dealing with the art of storytelling are plentiful, but Spaulding's book on this topic is an exceptional one. Her division of the book into four parts--"Telling Truth, Telling Stories," "How to Become a Storyteller," "Why Bother Learning and Telling Stories?," and "Farewell"--is predictable, but the content really speaks to the reader. Based on her experiences as a storytelling and group work specialist for the New York Public Library System, Spaulding's sage advice includes potential stories for inclusion when developing a storytelling repertoire. Each chapter includes tips for beginning storytellers, as well as useful endnotes. Spaulding's unique voice and enthusiasm for her craft are evident throughout the book. Appendixes include an excellent storiography, as well as a useful story collection and webliography. The book would be excellent for a beginning storyteller, either as part of a course or as an independent study, as it is both practical and inspirational. (CHOICE)

From Booklist
Each of the nearly 2,000 entries in this alphabetical listing of “long-form” television film directors presents vital statistics (in most cases) along with a list of notable films and some brief commentary. The individuals who are covered are directors of stand-alone television shows of more than one hour in length, including movie-length pilots. Longer episodes of shows with continuing series characters are not included, although reunion movies are. Coverage ranges from the 1950s to 2008. The work begins with a lengthy and informative introduction, and entries are followed by six appendixes. An awards chronology lists directorial achievements for the Emmy, DGA, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Peabody, and Christopher. Appendix 2 is a list of great directors overall and by decade. This is followed by two appendixes connecting directors to “best” movies, miniseries, and shows; and to genres and selected writers, historical figures, and actors and actresses. Appendix 5 lists anthology series such as Great Performances and provides a few examples of specific programs and their directors. Appendix 6 is a chronological listing of director credits for British imports such as Masterpiece Theatre. Demonstrating Roberts’ long career contributing to publications related to the film and television industry, this is a valuable addition to any collection serving a film- or television-studies program. --Sara Marcus

Review
This is a reasonable contribution to the literature of this oft-neglected form. Recommended. (CHOICE, December 2009)

A valuable addition to any collection serving a film or television studies program, this work will also serve the larger general collection in which patrons wish to know more about directors, awards, and actors and actresses. (American Reference Books Annual)

Demonstrating Roberts’ long career contributing to publications related to the film and television industry, this is a valuable addition to any collection serving a film- or television-studies program. (Booklist, November 2009)

The level of detail achieved in certain entries is awesome in its scrutiny and analysis….There can be no doubt that this is a bold entry into a poorly served area of film and media studies. It is therefore easy to see this volume's potential as an addition to enhance the print collection of materials supporting film studies or television production. The fact that so much care and attention has gone into crafting each entry lends an imposing and confident tone to the publication. (Reference Reviews)

In March of 2006, scholars from around the world gathered in Sun Valley, Idaho for a conference devoted to not only John Steinbeck but also to the authors whose work influenced, informs, or illuminates his writings. This volume represents the many unique papers delivered at that conference by scholars from around the world. This collection includes studies on authors who influenced Steinbeck's work, discussions of writers whose work is in dialogue with Steinbeck, and examinations of Steinbeck's contemporaries, whose individual works invite comparisons with those of the Nobel-prize winning author.

Revealing Steinbeck's penchant for culling "all old books," the first section focuses on Steinbeck's European forebears, particularly Sir Thomas Malory's retelling of the legend of King Arthur, Le Morte d'Arthur, and Henry Fielding's novel Tom Jones. This section also includes articles on his American forebears: Walt Whitman and Sarah Orne Jewett. The second part, "Steinbeck, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Cather" includes a personal reminiscence by Ernest Hemingway's daughter-in-law, Valerie, as well as comparisons of Steinbeck with other great American authors of the 20th century. The third section includes an essay by National Book Award winner Charles Johnson (Middle Passage), as well as articles that compare Steinbeck's work with Zora Neale Hurston, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison. Further articles are concerned with Steinbeck's moral philosophy and strong sense of social justice, eliciting comparisons with Sinclair Lewis, Tom Kristensen, and Charles Johnson. The fourth section, "Steinbeck, the Arts, and the World" includes articles on the film adaptation of The Moon Is Down, on Steinbeck and Mexican Modernism, on the American experience as portrayed in The Grapes of Wrath and Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep, and on Steinbeck and ecocriticism. The book fittingly concludes with John Ditsky's keynote address, "In Search of a Language: Steinbeck and Others," which was delivered

Historical Dictionary of Iraq (Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East), by Beth K. Dougherty, Edmund A. Ghareeb

Few countries boast as long and often proud a history as Iraq. It can be traced back thousands of years and includes high points with Sumer, Babylon and the Assyrians. It later came under Muslim rule, and also achieved considerable progress, only to be conquered by the Mongols, Ottomans, Mamluks and British. So it was actually only in 1932 that modern Iraq was at least formally in control of its own destiny, and again underwent considerable ups and downs, most recently under the strong but ultimately destructive rule of Saddam Hussein, who has since been replaced by what remains an often ineffectual interim regime.

This long and tortuous path is traced in the Historical Dictionary of Iraq, whose chronology starts in the year 6500 and ends in the year 2012, an amazingly long stretch. Fortunately, this is put into perspective in the introduction, which helps readers understand what went right, and what went wrong, over this period of millennia. The dictionary section then provides further information on significant persons, places and events, ancient civilizations and more recent regimes, political parties and institutions, as well as more generally the economy, society, culture and ethnic groups, and alas the wars. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Iraq.

Review
Given the cataclysmic events in Iraq since 2004, this updated work (1st ed., CH, Oct'04, 42-0698), part of the "Historical Dictionaries of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East" series, provides essential information on recent developments. This hefty volume by Dougherty and Ghareeb is comprehensive, covering the economy, ethnic groups, foreign relations, government, literature, and religion. The 49-page introduction is a readable narrative summary about Iraq from earliest times to the present. A chronology lists major occurrences from around 6500 BCE through June 2013, with detailed events by month or day from 1990 onward. Dictionary entries constitute the book's major portion, with related entries indicated by boldface words within definitions. Many definitions are encyclopedic: over three pages for the 'Desert Storm, Operation' entry and six pages for 'Foreign Policy.' Four appendixes provide lists of Iraqi government officials from 1920 to 2012 as well as 2005 to 2010 election results; UN Security Council Resolutions and outdated media lists from the first edition were omitted. A valuable bibliography is organized topically with introductory commentary on significant works. . . .Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. (CHOICE)

I have reviewed several of the historical dictionaries in this series and they are outstanding works. This timely volume is no exception. The scope covers the long span of history from ancient Mesopotamia through 2013, with attention to ethnic, religious, political, and ideological groups; individuals; cultural elements; and much more. Besides the hundreds of well-crafted entries, the volume includes a lengthy chronology, maps (including a tribal area breakdown), a fine historical essay, and several useful appendixes. The appendixes include the structures and individuals of political leadership since 1920 and the important Iraqi individuals, organizations, and election results from 2005-2013. The general bibliography and an extensive topical bibliography are both quite good. This edition has considerably more entries than the last edition published in 2004 and the bibliography has also been significantly expanded. The compiler, Edmund Ghareeb, is a leading scholar of Kurdish Studies and a prolific author on many aspects of the region. Beth Dougherty specializes in ethnic conflict and human rights. Iraq will continue to be in the forefront for many years to come and this source will be a valuable one for libraries to have available. (American Reference Books Annual)

The Historical Dictionary of Iraq by Beth Dougherty and Edmund Ghareeb is a second-edition book, updated from the first edition which was published in 2004. . . .Not only does it cover terms, but also people and locations. With black text on white pages, this is easy for everyone to read. . . .[T]he material contained in this dictionary is impressive. The reviewer has not encountered such an exhaustive collection of information about Iraq in any other source. This well-written updated edition of Historical Dictionary of Iraq is full of quality and trustworthy information and is recommended to anyone interested in learning more about the country and its history. Robert Ward's The Crucible: Creating an American Musical Nationalism, by Robert Paul Kolt

In Robert Ward's The Crucible: Creating an American Musical Nationalism, Robert Paul Kolt explores the life of the American composer Robert Ward through an examination of his most popular and enduring work, The Crucible. Focusing on the musical-linguistic relationships within the opera, Kolt demonstrates Ward's unique synthesis of text and music, one that lends itself to the perception of American musical nationalism. This book contains the most thorough and in-depth biography of Ward yet in print. Based on interviews with the composer, Kolt presents new information about Ward's life and career, focusing on his opera and examining the formation and construction of The Crucible's libretto and score, in turn offering new insights into the process of composing an opera. Kolt observes how the libretto's linguistic aspects helped Ward formulate the opera's melodic and rhythmic musical material. A detailed and unique analysis of the opera, particularly the musical and linguistic techniques Ward employed, demonstrates how these techniques lend themselves to the opera's reception as a work of American musical nationalism. The book also provides yet unpublished information on Arthur Miller's play, examining how it came to be written and soon after became the basis for Ward's work. Several appendixes provide a fuller picture, including a deleted scene from Miller's play and Ward's version of the scene, a chronological overview of the Salem Witchcraft Trials, and illustrations and photo reproductions from Ward's manuscript.

Historical Dictionary of Radical Christianity (Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements Series), by William H. Br

There are several eras in the history of Christianity radical forms of the tradition are obvious: the early church of the first five centuries, the medieval era, the age of reform, the early modern era, and the contemporary era. Radical Christian activity and experience may reflect either a primary or a derived level of spirituality. New converts may join a sect or movement with radical characteristics; or they may become dissatisfied with their initial Christian experiences and desire a different or deeper Christian spirituality, usually closely parallel to that seen in the New Testament.

The Historical Dictionary of Radical Christianity covers the history of this movement and includes an introductory essay and a bibliography. The dictionary section has over 400 cross-referenced entries. The dictionary entries selected reflect the leading groups, movements, and sects from each major era of Christian history. Especially in the contemporary period, the great proliferation of radical thinkers and groups has necessitated a selection process with those selected exhibiting sustained group activity, possessing an identifiable following, and demonstrating a significant cultural impact. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Radical Christianity.

Review
Brackney (Millard R. Cherry Distinguished Professor of Christian Thought and Ethics, Acadia Univ.) explores numerous attempts—some highly successful, some not—at changing the Christian faith over time. Introductory material presents the “evolving nature of radical Christianity” in a time line covering periods stretching from the first five centuries CE to today. Brackney distinguishes among five general types of radical Christians: theological, ethical, reconstructive, prophetic, and sacramental—a useful typology for understanding the remainder of the text, as each entry is coded with one of these types. The concise entries cover movements, people, new religions, sects, and other related subjects that figure into the overall history of radical Christianity and include bolded keywords, indicating cross-referenced topics throughout. The bibliography is subdivided chronologically, and each section highlights primary and secondary sources; this makes it useful for further study. Brackney also provides a short explanation of the types and nature of the literature available for each period of history discussed. VERDICT One of the stronger and most clearly organized entries in this series, this is a good resource for those interested in further exploration of the nature of religious radicalism and the reasoning behind various uprisings. (Library Journal)

This dictionary by Brackney (Acadia Divinity College, Nova Scotia) is a fascinating compilation of various groups and movements that at one time or another have been considered ‘radical’ or ‘unorthodox.’ By ‘radical,’ the author means ‘an identifiable person/group that sought in some way to restore or recover the original essence of Christianity, as witnessed in the New Testament scriptures and literature of first-century Christianity.’ The introduction provides a brief, insightful overview of the ‘evolving nature of radical Christianity’ from the foundation of the church to the present. The most helpful part of this dictionary is the typology the writer uses to characterize how various individuals and movements have differed from the creeds and practices developed by and in the early church. The general types include theological (T), ethical (E), reconstructive (R), prophetic (P), and sacramental (S). The dictionary is thorough, though not exhaustive. Each entry is brief but clearly written and well researched. Also offered is a useful bibliography of general, primary, and secondary resources. Specialists and theological students, along with church historians, will find this volume a great ready-reference dictionary and a welcome supplement to other works on the same subject. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE)

Brackney’s study of radical Christianity illuminates this ongoing tug-of-war between orthodoxy and heresy, each contributing to the perception of the other. This would be a useful addition to the reference collections of high schools and universities. (American Reference Books Annual)

This is [an] excellent encyclopedic “dictionary” from the Scarecrow stable, with over 400 entries which are handily cross-referenced by means of bold print....This well-written and endlessly fascinating book is based upon a thorough knowledge of the work of previous scholars and upon research in libraries in the US, Canada, and the UK. Making Movies With Orson Welles, by Gary Graver

In 1958, Gary Graver moved from his hometown of Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles, California with dreams of an acting career in Hollywood. Soon after his arrival, he caught a double bill in a small theater on Hollywood Boulevard, the lower half of which was the recently released Touch of Evil. Upon viewing the B classic, Graver decided he wanted to be a director and spent many years honing his craft, as both a cinematographer and a director, not to mention writer, actor, and producer―much like his idol, Orson Welles.

In 1970, when Graver learned that Welles was in town, he impulsively called up the director and offered him his services as a cameraman. It was only the second time in Welles's career that he had received such an offer from a cinematographer, the other being from Gregg Toland, who worked on one of the greatest films ever, Citizen Kane.

In Making Movies with Orson Welles, Graver recounts the highs and lows of the moviemaking business as he and one of the most important and influential directors of all time struggled to get films produced. The two men collaborated on more than a dozen projects, including F for Fake, Filming Othello, and the still-unreleased The Other Side of the Wind. Their close friendship and creative filmmaking partnership would endure for 15 years, until Welles' death in 1985. Also including a filmography of works and 20 photos from Graver's personal collection, this fascinating memoir recalls what it was like to work with the legendary Welles and offers advice and tales of caution for future filmmakers.

From Booklist
The final years of cinematic icon Welles have received greater attention recently, first in Joseph McBride’s What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? (2006) and now in the intimate memoir of Welles’ cinematographer during the period, in which he worked tirelessly on a number of projects, completing few. Much of the focus is on the ambitious The Other Side of the Wind, which remains unfinished and unseen, but here, too, is the scoop on his final releases, F for Fake and Filming Othello, as well as on such tantalizing unrealized projects as The Cradle Will Rock and The Big Brass Ring. Although Graver’s account, completed by Rausch after Graver’s death, is betimes disjointed and self-aggrandizing, it provides invaluable, fly-on-the-wall glimpses of the legendary director’s eccentric but effective working methods during his obscure guerrilla filmmaking phase; some surprising revelations (e.g., Welles was asked to helm Popeye, later directed by Robert Altman); and entertaining anecdotes manifesting Welles’ famously larger-than-life personality. --Gordon Flagg

Review
Enlightening memoir and homage to the legendary filmmaker....While this look at Welles' frenetic, independent filmmaking is a boon to film scholars and critics, fans of the actor and director will enjoy discovering the man behind the black cape. Making Movies with Orson Welles reveals why watching movies by Orson Welles is such an exhilarating experience. (Foreword Reviews)

Making Movies with Orson Welles is a crucial contribution to the literature about Welles....Graver loved Orson Welles, and this book allows us to share the love. (National Board Of Review)

Graver writes of the 'incredible, surreal privilege' of working with Welles with affection and insight. (Film Comment)

Gary Graver, one of Orson Welles' closest collaborators, has written a superb book on Welles. It is a captivating and insightful look at their extraordinary relationship, a must-have for Welles fans and academians alike. (Frank Marshall, Producer, Raiders of the Lost Ark)

Charming memoir of working with Orson Welles
By David McCarthy
During the last 15 years of Orson Welles' life, Gary Graver was Welles' dedicated cameraman. Even though Welles only completed two films during these years (his last masterpiece "F for Fake" and the spellbinding "Filming Othello"), this period was one of great activity and creativity. Graver was with Welles every step of the way. Graver's memoir, structured as a series of anecdotes, gives a wonderful sense of what working with Welles was like. Along with Joseph McBride's "What Ever Happened to Orson Welles" and Peter Tonguette's "Orson Welles Remembered", Graver's book is a bracing corrective to the misconception of Welles' last years as wasted and unproductive. Graver's modesty, loyalty and warmth shine through on every page. Kudos to Andrew Rausch for pushing the book to completion after Graver's death. Highly recommended.

The last years of Orson Welles
By Cliff Burns
Orson Welles’ films are hard to find and they were chronically hamstrung by production delays, minuscule budgets. Welles became a master editor in order to disguise their shortcomings (anyone who has any doubt need only watch the cutting of the battle scene in “Chimes at Midnight” or the attempted assassination of Cassio in “Othello”). In the final two decades of his life, Welles struggled to secure funds to complete projects, increasingly isolated by an industry that favored youth over experience, big concepts and blockbusters over the classics. It is appropriate that he and cameraman Gary Graver shot test footage for what would have been his last great stab at Shakespeare, an adaptation of “King Lear”. Lear, another old man who lived past his time, cast out, left to rage and snarl in the wilderness (and, oh, yes, Orson could snark and fulminate with the best of them, as Henry Jaglom’s tape recorder attests).

Gary Graver came along during the great man’s decline, offering his services, rounding up crews whenever O.W. had a whim to shoot more footage for “The Other Side of the Wind” or whatever hackwork was paying the bills that particular month. Circumstances forced them to adopt the tactics of guerilla film-makers and Orson pieced together what he could salvage, incorporating the footage into projects that dragged on through several American presidencies.

Mr. Graver’s collaborator, Andrew J. Rausch, and Welles biographer Joseph McBride, do their best to assure us of Mr. Graver’s peerless prowess as a B-roll, second unit director and/or highly esteemed cameraman of classics like, er, “Satan’s Sadists”. But the truth is that by 1970, when Graver met Welles, the latter was in an artistic funk, desperate for whatever help he could get. Graver was in the right place at the right time and he knew how to load film in a camera. Welcome aboard, son…

As a memoir, Making Movies With Orson Welles is more of an oral history–choppy and episodic and structurally creaky. For Welles fans, there are some glimpses of his stubborn genius, a few anecdotes about his working methods, some examples that showed he retained his ferocious intellect even in the wilderness, unpitying and hard-driving, a stern taskmaster for young, inexperienced and ever-changing crews. Graver evinces awe of Orson Welles at every turn, which must have made him an agreeable companion for a notorious egoist and raconteur. But that quality also damages his credibility; Graver is (at best) an unreliable commentator, an apprentice refusing to dish dirt on his master, a minor talent who can’t help continually pinching himself at the prospect of working for the man who made “Kane”.

Diverting hagiography; for completists only.
