Edward Kennedy 'Duke' Ellington (1899-1974) is recognized as one of the great composers and orchestra leaders of the twentieth century and is credited for raising jazz to its highest plateau. He remained musically active through his entire life, creating a prolific musical output. The place to go with questions on Ellington recordings

This book fills in the gaps left by dodgy or absent liner notes. The main body of the text is a chronological list of Ellington band performances (including the small ensembles under sidemen's names) which were known to have been recorded and released by somebody at sometime somewhere. The typical entry includes:

a)title of ensemble (e.g. D.E. and his Famous Orchestra, Johnny Hodges and his Orchestra etc.),

b)date,

c) nature of performance (live, studio, movie sound track),

d)musicians,

e)place, and

f) titles with original record label & identifying numbers. There are occasionally notes giving variant titles.

There is also an alphabetical list of titles indicating the various recording dates and several lists and indexes of "Ellingtonians", band personnel who were connected with the Ellington organization in any way, as well as lists of record labels and the various names under which Ellington recorded.

This is entirely oriented toward identifying recordings, not compositions, so there is no composer or publishing data given. There is no interpretive or evaluative commentary.

Keep in mind that there have been several editions, as new performances are occasionally unearthed, so this is a work in progress. For example, the fifth volume of the Duke Ellington Treasury Shows, released by Storyville in 2002, included a live performance from 1945 that I did not find in Timner.

Essential for any serious Ellington lover

This is a huge and initially intimidating book which lists every known recording of Duke Ellington including much that has never been released. Also included are recording of 'Ellingtonians', men from the band who now and then led their own groups. Heavily indexed and cross-referenced.
I've had the 4th edition ever since it came out and I find it indespensible. Grab one now before you have to buy one used at twice the price!

Raw has achieved a breadth and depth to the work that would be the envy of many other reference works sitting on the same shelf. As mentioned, Raw suggested that writing this book was most enjoyable. It is a pleasure to admit that reading and browsing the volume is equally enjoyable. Scarecrow Press has done it again, keeping the crows away from the fields of rich, succulent, detailed works of reference. This is not an inexpensive addition to stock, but I would argue an essential one for anyone wishing to add value to their reference collection. The breadth of content elevates the book beyond just another volume about Ridley Scott. As such, the books in the 791.43s should, quite frankly, move over and make room. (Reference Reviews)

Great Scott! Why Has This Book Been Ignored?

I am amazed that such a book as this one on Ridley Scott, a major player who has directed Films that Matter, including several cult hits, has not inspired reviews to note its accomplishments. This Raw treatment is anything but "raw." It is surely ambitious in its attempt to cover a long and productive career, struck in cinema, then extended to television through the "Scott free" enterprise with Ridley's brother Tony (who has been productive enough to deserve his own book, but who is of necessity included here for the time being).
The trick to such an "encyclopedic" approach is not so much to know where to begin, but where to stop. Should Gordon Matthew Sumner of Wallsend, Northumberland, be included, for example--better known as "Sting," who sings the title song for SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME (1987) and who provided the music for WHITE SQUALL (1996)? Or how about Evangelos Odysseus Papathanssiou, better known as "Vangelis," whose layered music graced the dystopian BLADE RUNNER (1982)? Does the $200 million fiasco WATERWORLD (1995) deserve an entry because it was directed by Kevin Reynolds, who would later direct TRISTAN + ISOLDE in 2005 for Scott? With regard to influence, entries tend to become even more wildly allusive: Did TRIUMPH OF THE WILL influence GLADIATOR? Did THE THIRD MAN's noir style influence THE COMPANY? Even so, such entries will probably be of interest to Scott's fans. With regard to TV, the book offers much detail about such programmes as NUMB3RS, including a breakdown of episodes, complete through Series 4 (as of May of 2008).

In addition, the various types of published narrative (short stories, novels, novellas, autobiographies, and biographies) by Latin American women writers has increased significantly in the last ten to fifteen years. To address the lack of bibliographic resources, Kathy Leonard has compiled Latin American Women Writers: A Resource Guide to Titles in English.

This reference includes all forms of narrative-short story, autobiography, novel, novel excerpt, and others-by Latin American women dating from 1898 to 2007. More than 3,000 individual titles are included by more than 500 authors. This includes nearly 200 anthologies, more than 100 autobiographies/biographies or other narrative, and almost 250 novels written by more than 100 authors from 16 different countries. For the purposes of this bibliography, authors who were born in Latin America and either continue to live there or have immigrated to the United States are included. Also, titles of pieces are listed as originally written, in either Spanish or Portuguese. If the book was originally written in English, a phrase to that effect is included, to better reflect the linguistic diversity of narrative currently being published.

About the Author
Carol Diethe was originally a philologist at Middlesex University but for most of her career she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the History of Ideas. Her overall remit was with the European Cultural History division of which she was Head. She was the first Secretary of the Friedrich Nietzsche Society and she had written and translated several books on Nitezsche.

Van Boer (music history, Western Washington Univ.) defines music’s “Classical period” as covering composers active between 1730 and 1800 (a standard and useful, if not always agreed-upon, range) whose work “must conform to either a developmental or conventional stage of some style we can call ‘Classical.’” He provides more than 1000 cross-referenced entries on Classical composers (primarily), major performers of the time, prominent librettists, influential patrons, important public concerts, major orchestras, styles and genres, and “occasional peculiarities,” e.g., unusual musical instruments. Also included is a chronology of key musical and historical events. Readers may think of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven when they think of this period, but here they will discover Lodewijk van Beethoven, a Flemish-German singer and Kappelmeister who was idolized by his more famous grandson Ludwig; Italian composer Giuseppe Gazzaniga; Dutch-American composer, violinist, and music publisher Peter Albrecht von Hagen, and so many more. VERDICT While most personal, public, school, and academic music libraries own an edition of the Oxford Companion to Music, a spot-check of the present volume showed that of ten composers randomly chosen, only three were found in the Oxford Companion; and while musicians, students, and scholars may still go on to look up more comprehensive information on these musicians in the New Grove Dictionary of Music, or in the Grove Online database, this broadly researched, carefully edited, single-volume work is invaluable for ready reference as well as fascinating for browsing. About the Author
Bertil van Boer is professor of Musicology-Theory at Western Washington University. Trained as a performer, his focus of research is on the music of the European periphery during the 18th century, with special emphasis on Scandinavia. He has written substantially on Classical music, this partly in the form of articles in learned journals and reference works, and has also edited music for performance for Naxos Records. He was one of the founding members and past president of the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music.

This volume on signals intelligence—which includes wireless interception, electronic intelligence, cryptanalysis, and more—is the 16th in a series titled ‘Historical Dictionaries of Intelligence and CounterIntelligence.’ It features around 500 entries on topics ranging from the Falkland Islands to the only British MI5 officer during WW I who spoke Japanese. West (Centre for Counter Intelligence and Security Studies) covers the earliest times—the Boer War—up to the latest, with an article on social media. The dictionary also addresses some obscure aspects of the subject, such as Sand Island, HI. Aids to the reader include a list of abbreviations and acronyms, a chronology, several appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. This bibliography features English-language materials almost exclusively, even though its scope—and the dictionary's scope in general—is international. Also provided are links to a number of relevant websites, including some from Russia, Scandinavia, and other parts of Europe. The volume's index, cross-references and see also references are useful. The appendices. . . are especially notable, comprising a list of all the people (as far as known) referred to by code names in the 'Venona' transcripts of enciphered Soviet messages, which the author declares to have been 'the greatest secret of the Cold War', and the text of the agreement of 1946 between the United Kingdom and the United States on signals intelligence co-operation, which for many years was such a closely guarded secret that even its existence was not avowed. The provision of an index is uncommon in the Scarecrow series, and it is to be hoped that the general editors will continue this helpful feature. ... The Dictionary offers a window into an obscure, but highly significant, aspect of twentieth century history and of contemporary world affairs, and thus deserves a wide circulation both in academic and larger public libraries. About the Author
Nigel West is currently the European Editor of the International Journal of Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence and teaches the history of postwar intelligence at the Centre for Counterintelligence and Security Studies. He is the author of many books, including the Historical Dictionary of British Intelligence (Scarecrow, 2005), Historical Dictionary of International Intelligence (Scarecrow, 2006), Historical Dictionary of Cold War Counterintelligence (Scarecrow, 2007), and Historical Dictionary of Sexspionage (Scarecrow, 2009). In October 2003 he was awarded the U.S. Association of Former Intelligence Officers' first Lifetime Literature Achievement Award.
