Operas in English: A Dictionary (2 Volumes), by Margaret Ross Griffel

In this revised and expanded edition of Operas in English: A Dictionary, Margaret Ross Griffel updates her work on operas written specifically to an English text, including not only works originally in English but also those set to new English librettos. Since the book’s initial publication in 1999, Griffel has added nearly 900 new items, bringing the total number of entries in this new edition to 4,400, covering the world of opera in English from 1634 through 2011.

The front matter includes a brief history of English opera, to “set the stage” for the dictionary entries that follow. Listed alphabetically, each opera entry includes alternative titles; a full, descriptive title; the number of acts; composer’s name; librettist’s name, with original language of the libretto; the source of the text (date, place, and cast of the first performance); date of composition (if it occurred substantially earlier than the premiere); similar information for the first U.S. (including colonial) and British (England, Scotland, Wales) performances; brief plot summary; main characters (names and vocal ranges, where known); names of noteworthy numbers; comments on special musical problems and techniques; other settings of the text, including non-English ones; other operas, if any, involving the same story or characters (cross references are indicated by asterisks). Entries include such information as first and critical editions of the score and libretto; a bibliography, ranging from scholarly studies to more informal journal articles and reviews; a discography; and information on video recordings.

Operas in English features four appendixes, a selective bibliography, and two indexes. The first appendix lists composers, their places and years of birth and death, and their operas included in the text as entries; the second does the same for librettists; the third records authors whose works inspired or were adapted for the librettos; and the fourth comprises a chronological listing of the A–Z entries, including the date of first performance, the city of the premiere (or composition date if unperformed or performed much later), the short title of the opera, and the composer. There is a main character index and an index of singers, conductors, producers, composers of other settings, and other key figures.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Griffel’s new two-volume set is a reminder of (or an introduction to) the vast number of operas in the English language. This update to the author’s 1999 edition includes approximately 900 additional works and totals more than 4,000 entries. The first volume is an alphabetical listing of works, with each entry including title, composer, librettist, date of composition, publisher, and date of first performance (if known). Most entries also include a brief plot summary, and some contain original cast names and related bibliographic sources, like performance reviews. Volume 2 features a variety of useful appendixes, such as composers, librettists, authors and sources, a chronology, an index of character names, and a general index of names.Covering operas from 1634 through 2010, the work lists and describes standard repertoire by composers like Britten, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Henry Purcell. Griffel also unearths a wealth of interesting and obscure works, such as the 8 operas based on the Pied Piper. She also points readers to specific reference sources for more in-depth details on many of the operas. In the preface, Griffel notes that certain elements inspired this update. First, her desire to introduce readers to many new works composed in the last decade. Second, with the expansion of the Internet, she was able to add new insights based on research she was unable to do for the first edition (e.g., examine digital scores and librettos held by various institutions). There are numerous dictionaries and encyclopedias about opera, such as the four-volume New Grove Dictionary of Opera (1992) and The New Penguin Opera Guide (2001). This work is set apart from these by the focus on English-only works and the exclusion of biographies of composers and singers, resulting in many more unique opera listings than most other resources. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries. --Steven York

Opera lovers will rejoice with this revised edition by a noted musicologist that updates many of the original 3,500 entries while adding coverage of 900 more works, most focusing on the past decade. There is an introductory brief history of opera in English arranged by country. The core text arranges operas alphabetically by title and provides information on authors, first and notable performances, principals and conductor, setting, bibliography, and discography. Volume 2 lists composers, librettists, and authors and offers a chronology. There’s even an index of characters with vocal ranges listed. (Library Journal Best Reference Review)

This dictionary, compiled by Griffel (senior editor, Office of Publications, Columbia Univ.; Operas in German: A Dictionary), is dedicated to operas that include English text, either originally or in a translation of a libretto originally written in another language. The text is broken into two volumes. The first volume lists 3,500 English-language operas in alphabetical order by title. Basic information, such as the type of opera, the number of acts in the piece, the composer’s name, the librettist’s name, the original language of the libretto, and details about the opera’s first performance, is included in each entry. Some entries also include brief plot descriptions. The second volume includes a list of works organized by composer and librettist respectively. A chronological organization of the operas, an index of characters, and a helpful selective bibliography listed by subject are also included in the second volume, offering researchers alternate ways to find information in the text. The bibliography points readers to a wealth of information that music scholars and enthusiasts alike could easily use to deepen their research. This dictionary is unique in focusing solely on English-language compositions. Additionally, this source is one of the most up-to-date reference books on the subject of these performances. Works performed for the first time in English as recently as 2010 are listed in the chronological appendix. VERDICT This dictionary does a wonderful job of offering readers several different ways to find the information they may be looking for. It will be useful to classical musicians, vocalists, and actors. Music scholars and historians may also find it a good first stop for information. This is a helpful resource for a wide variety of music researchers specifically interested in operas that include English text. (Library Journal)

A greatly expanded and revised edition of Griffel's 1999 publication (CH, Apr'00, 37-4209) featuring some 900 new terms, this dictionary has its main listings in the first volume and the appendixes and index in the second. For inclusion, an opera must be originally composed in the English language. Entries have librettist, composer, voice types, plot précis, and more. Information about the location and availability of scores and librettos is especially valuable. The addition of some performance reviews and notable videographies and discographies is extremely useful. Of the appendixes (which cover composers, librettists, authors/sources, and chronological entries), the most valuable from a reference standpoint is the one on authors and sources, which makes locating the settings of works of literature much easier. More general works, such as The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, edited by Stanley Sadie (CH, Jul'93, 30-5942), while containing the same type of material (and, of course, covering some of the same works), lose English-language works in an ocean of multilanguage works. Griffel (Columbia University's Office of Publications) previously wrote Operas in German (CH, Apr'91, 28-4264). Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates; general readers. (CHOICE)

Operas in English is an excellent starting point for researching this literature, and is recommended for those who are responsible for choosing repertoire for opera productions. College libraries will also find it a valuable addition to their holdings. (Journal of Singing)

a truly massive undertaking
By Col William Russell (ret)
These two volumes are an expanded and revised edition of Margaret Griffel's pioneering 1999 work. These two hardcover volumes take 985 pages. The first volume (558 pages) lists the operas in alphabetical order. Each entry contains a description of the opera, composer, first performance, bibliography, and source of libretto. In many cases a synopsis is also included. The second volume is a compilation of lists of composers with their dates, works, year of premiere, and location of premiere. A similar list is included of librettists followed by a chronology and list of characters.

This reference belongs in every music library whether of an institution or collectors.

Well done!

An Introduction to Intelligence Research and Analysis (Security and Professional Intelligence Education Series), by Jerome Clauser

Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on United States soil, the intelligence community has been scrutinized on how it performs its functions. Consequently, the 9/11 Commission made several recommendations on how to improve the quality of intelligence analysis. Those charges and the United States' involvement in a war in Iraq have spawned additional charges of the politicization of intelligence. All this is being played out as the Intelligence Community has reformed and reconfigured itself with newly created departments supported by an expanded and inexperienced workforce that was never envisioned when the intelligence community was formally established in 1947.

First published in the 1970s, the classic book An Introduction to Intelligence Research and Analysis was used by intelligence analysts to track and monitor the Communist threat. Although today's environment has changed considerably since the Cold War, intelligence analysts still need to understand the basics of intelligence analysis. The book focuses on how to do research, what qualities are needed to be an intelligence analyst, and what methods can be employed to help in producing products. To avoid politicization, intelligence analysts should strive to become more transparent in their methodology of how they arrived at their conclusions. Intelligence Research and Analysis provides several methods to assist in that end.

An Introduction to Intelligence Research and Analysis

An Introduction to Intelligence Research and Analysis

This book reads so well that it almost feels like if it was not an educational material. The author has a great gift to present the topic clearly and briefly; even a thoroughbred would understand the point (ShyBoy's comment: Mustangs do not consider thoroughbreds the most intellectually gifted ponies, as they tend to shoot out without thinking). I would recommend this book to everyone who intends to write a more complex work based on any type of research, and make valid conclusions based on it. Lot of effort can get wasted, and conclusions can be flawed if the research is not done right. Systematic search of newly available information in various archives and consequent rigorous analysis of obtained information for studies in history would be a perfect example of use of this textbook outside the intelligence community.

The book is useful to anyone who has to deal with data sets and confirmation or disconfirmation of hypotheses. The basic rules relating to research, reasoning, data handling, bias, and intellectual honesty may seem obvious, but reminding of essential truths does no harm. The advice provided is very practical, based on experience and deep understanding of the mind of an average researcher (a curious geek). Some logical exercise is included in chapters which relate to basic concepts of intelligence analysis, introduction to quantitative statistical techniques, methodologies, and models.

The range of techniques presented in the part relating to prediction and forecasting is quite wide. It is interesting to see hard science methods used on social science and political intelligence. Valid predictions have got to be based on correctly conducted research and well formulated hypotheses. In other words, sloppy data collection and design flaws in analytic methods will only result in pointless conclusions which have no validity.

This book is an essential guide for everyone who is serious about meaningful intellectual work. The rules can be applied to any so-called soft science, from political science, to behavioral sciences and sociology, and most importantly, historical studies and biographies.

Sherlock Holmes on the Stage: A Chronological Encyclopedia of Plays Featuring the Great Detective, by Amnon Kabatchnik

One of the world's most well known fictional characters, Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in 1887. The detective was featured in four novels and 56 short stories written by his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Within a decade of his creation Sherlock Holmes made his theatrical debut, first in a couple of obscure productions and soon in the celebrated play adapted by and starring William Gillette. Through the 20th century and beyond, the fictional detective featured in dozens of plays, not to mention radio programs, films, and television shows.

In Sherlock Holmes on Stage, Amnon Kabatchnik cites the many theatrical appearances of the great detective since his debut in a one-act musical satire in November 1893. Divided into three sections, this book focuses on plays written or cowritten by Conan Doyle, one-act productions, and plays written by other authors―either adaptations of the novels and stories or original works. Within these sections, each entry is arranged in chronological order and provides a plot synopsis, production details, and other unique features. Some entries identify principal actors and provide biographical sketches of the playwrights, as well as those actors who made a lasting impression as the fictional sleuth. The book also includes several appendixes that focus on special productions, plays that feature variations of the Holmes character, and a list of acting editions.

Review
Page-turner....This is the kind of detail that brings the history of Sherlock Holmes in the theater to life.... Thick with interest to Sherlock Holmes scholars, theater students, and late 19th century popular scholars like. (College & Research Libraries, March 2009)

Preferable to others...it provides the opportunity to enjoy the plays rather than merely read a list. The volume is much more accessible than the play scripts themselves, many of which are quite scarce. The characterizations of Holmes, Watson, and their milieu are dizzying in their variety and complexity. (Los Angeles Times, August 2008)

The author of Blood on the Stage: Milestone Plays of Crime, Mystery, and Detection: An Annotated Repertoire, 1900-1925...has written an equally meritorious survey of the theatrical Holmes....What sets this book apart from other references on the 'public Holmes' are the detailed plot summaries and production histories, often including further professional biography of writers and actors involved. (Mystery Scene, December 01, 2008)

Kabatchinik's research for this book leaves me in awe....Kabatchnik...does a good job. (Deadly Pleasures Mystery Magazine)

A concise overview.... Clearly written.... Sufficiently engaging.... Will appeal to any library supporting Sherlockian interests or theater studiesssss (American Reference Books Annual)

Theatre director Amnon Kabatchnik has done his homework and then some....It's hard to imagine you'll find a single source as detailed and thorough....recommended for Holmes completists and those with a meticulous fascination with theatre history. (Bookgasm.Com)

A concise overview.... Clearly written.... Sufficiently engaging.... Will appeal to any library supporting Sherlockian interests or theater studies (American Reference Books Annual)

It is highly likely that Amnon Kabatchnik's book on Holmes is a first, as it examines the theatrical Holmes. Each chapter in the book ends with a set of notes, and appendix G provides a full list of the plays in the book. On close reading the book is written in a style that contains an element of humor and distinct tongue-in-cheek. Clearly this book is worth purchasing for institutions that run courses which relate to Conan Doyle's work or fictional crime literature. (Reference Reviews, June 2009)

From that inglorious beginning, the famous resident of 221B Baker Street has gone on to star in musicals, comedies, thrillers, solo shows, at least one puppetry piece, and a fairy tale about the heir of a marshmallow tycoon. Such are the revelations of Kabatchnik's energetically researched volume, which covers scores of Doyle-derived works. Theatre scholars and hardcore Sherlockians will welcome this book... (American Theatre, October 1, 2009)

A Tribute to the Great Detective Story
By R. Elliott
This book was written for people passionate about Sherlock Holmes. It's an homage not only to Holmes but to all those who have loved him over the years. The book is, of course, an encyclopedia of all the Sherlock Holmes plays, but it's the anecdotes within the work that arrested me: William Gillette, who co-authored the first Holmes play with Sir Conan Doyle, portrayed Holmes more than 1,300 times in his life, and his final performance was on a radio broadcast when he was 82 years old, two years before his death. If that moves you (and it did move me very much, especially after reading about his life-long affair with the fictional sleuth), you'll be delighted to find an author who shares this enthusiasm. The book travels from 1890 to the present day, and Sherlock Holmes and his environment change drastically as the plays evolve to reflect the changing times. In the end, the book is useful as a reference, but for me it was also an entertaining tribute to the author's, society's and my own passion for the `great detective story.'

This, then, is the stage upon which tragedy has been played
By James O'Leary
"Throughout his career, Doyle wrote sixty tales and three novels (the third was The Valley of Fear, 1915) featuring Holmes and his chronicler, Dr. John H. Watson," writes Amnon Kabatchnik in the introduction of his book. Doyle, of course, wrote 56 short stories and four novels that compromise the official Holmes Canon. The sloppiness in Kabatchnik's sentence is disconcerting because 1) it implies that there are 63 Holmes stories and 2) by this point Kabatchnik had already listed the three earlier published novels. As the plays featuring Holmes was a subject that I knew little about and wanted to learn more, I was a bit worried. Judging by the bibliography and footnotes, it appears that "Sherlock Holmes on the Stage" is well researched. His thumbnail synopses are well-written and for the most part clear. Occasionally, newspaper reviews of the the various productions will be quoted, but there could have been more of that. It would be interesting to know the historical impact the plays had, especially the earlier ones. The chapters are headed by the name of the play under discussion, but I would have liked the playwright's name included, as many plays have the same or similar titles. I also would have liked a uniform format for the listing of the actors of each play for easy reference. Photos would also have been nice. These are minor, but important, quibbles. More could have been done to make this book indispensable, but as is, it is a worthy addition to any Holmes reference library.

Inside the Recording Studio: Working with Callas, Rostropovich, Domingo, and the Classical Elite, by Peter Andry, Robin Stringer, Tony Lo

As a record producer and administrator, Peter Andry has worked with many of the 20th century's greatest classical music artists and performers. Through his work with Decca, his years as president of EMI Classics, and his creation and direction of Warner Classics, he has collaborated with high-caliber artists such as Maria Callas, Yehudi Menuhin, and Herbert von Karajan. He associated with them in close quarters through times of work, play, stress, and relaxation. He has admired their talent, dedication, and charisma, as well as coped with their foibles, idiosyncrasies, and egos.

In Inside the Recording Studio: Working with Callas, Rostropovich, Domingo, and the Classical Elite, Andry recounts his experiences with these exceptional talents, with whom he worked as a musician, a record producer, and a company executive. Andry presents intimate portraits of brilliant artists―such as Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, Sir Thomas Beecham, Otto Klemperer, Sir Simon Rattle, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jacqueline du Pré, and Maxim Vengerov―juxtaposed with the dramatic changes occurring in the recording business during this time, a period that began with 78s and saw successively the advent of LPs, stereo sound, quadraphonic sound, audio cassettes, video, CDs, DVDs, and the growing importance of the internet. A foreword by Plácido Domingo and more than 30 photos of the artists are included along with a discography of Andry's recordings with the three labels. These memoirs will be fascinating and exciting to anyone interested in the classical music and recording industries.

an excellent inside look at some great EMI & Decca recordings
By Col William Russell (ret)
"Inside the Recording Studio" is the diary of record producer Pere Andry in which he tells of making recordings with some of the greats of the mid-1950s onward for the labels Decca and EMI - Lodnon and Angel in the US. As a recording fan myself, I have enjoyed these through the years starting with the memoirs of early producers like Fred Gaisberg and Joe Batten. Peter Andry was responsible for many of the recordings we still enjoy today - and are among the best made and by which others are judged.
He is at his best discussing conductors such as Sir Thomas Beecham and Otto Klemperer. I suppose this is so because these bring a more personal touch rather than just reporting the facts.
Don't get me wrong. The other chapters are fun as well although I must say that the chapter titled "Testament" could well have spent more time telling us about his recording the 1955 Bayreuth Ring in stereo rather than digressing into a history about Decca. His stereo Ring has finally been released on the Testament label - hence the chapter title - and which I aired a couple of years ago.
If I have a quibble or two, one is that the photos are rather poor with no better quality than a newspaper photo. Surely they could have reproduced them on clearly on high quality paper. Another is that Mr. Andry gives Charles Munch's name as "Münch" which I don't think the esteemed French conductor would've liked.
Even so, I can still highly recommend this book, "Inside the Recording Studio" by Peter Andry.

For the classical record fans
By Martin Kuskis
Peter Andry's book follows on from similar "insider" books about the classical recording industry by John Culshaw, Suvi Raj Grubb and others. For me it is always interesting to read about the background to famous recordings and to gain some insights into the human side of great performers.

The book's title might lead some buyers astray - there is quite a lot about Callas and Rostropovich, but relatively little about Domingo - and a substantial chapter about Karajan for example, who is very prominently pictured on the cover (with Rostropovich, Richter, Oistrakh and the author). The book is quite short and at times I yearned for more detailed accounts and for more artists to be covered; the discography included in the book is very tantalising. Even so there are signs of padding: the half-chapter on Maxim Vengerov, for example, reads like an artist bio with just a little added about the author's contact with him. Although two co-authors are named, there are still some awkwardly written passages and a couple of bad errors - for example, the statement that Leonard Bernstein's greatest work is his 'Requiem' (presumably this should be 'Mass'). There is a very good selection of photographs but they should have been printed on glossy paper. For these reasons the book could be regarded as somewhat overpriced.

And yet the pluses much outweigh the minuses. Peter Andry was the producer for many of the most famous classical recordings issued by EMI during its golden period of the 1960s and 1970s, recordings which still stand up well today. There are fascinating snippets about Karajan, Klemperer and Giulini and a rather sad account of Callas's latter years, and much more. My favourite story from the book would be the one about the screaming chorister - you will have to read the book to find out!

This is not a book of great revelations or scandals but a very readable and affectionate account of what went on behind the scenes of some of the great classical recordings. Perhaps Peter Andry could be persuaded to write another volume of reminiscences - he surely has enough material for it. In the meantime this one is recommended.

A pleseant afternoon read
By Chef Joe
Classical record producers rarely spill all; these are not Hollywood scandal rags. However, Andry gives us a good read of his adventures in the business and highlights many of the artists he worked with over the years.

Kirill Kondrashin: His Life in Music, by Gregor Tassie

Kirill Kondrashin is regarded as one of the most brilliant Russian conductors of the 20th century and a great interpreter of Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler. In Kirill Kondrashin: His Life in Music, Gregor Tassie presents a full biography of the artist, from his humble background and early conducting experience at age 17, through his 20 years in Leningrad and at the Bolshoi Theatre; from his breaking with the Bolshoi and the expanded symphonic career that followed, through his defection in 1978, and his unexpected death of a heart attack in 1981.

Using first hand accounts and previously unavailable archive materials from the Soviet Party and KGB sources, Tassie provides a detailed view of Kondrashin's life and work, including his appointment as the first Russian conductor to visit America and meet President Eisenhower and his associations with such artists as Emil Gilels, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, Van Cliburn, and Dmitri Shostakovich. The book also supplies insight and information on the nature of the society in which Kondrashin lived, including political life in the Soviet Union from the 1920s until the 1970s and relations between East and West. Twenty photos are included, as well as a full discography, bibliography, and index, making this a fascinating resource for anyone interested in 20th century music, as well as life in the USSR.

Review
Gregor Tassie's new biography contains some anecdotes pertaining to Kondrashin's Bolshoi years (1943–56) that will be of interest to operaphiles....The volume contains a useful chronology and an admirably thorough...discography. (Opera News)

[Kondrashin's] life is fleshed out and told in excellent fashion by this well-documented biographical study. … The result is a study which commemorates a great conductor excellently. …The Bibliography and Discography are fascinating and appear to be reliable. All in all, this is a book eminently worthy of its subject. (Musical Opinion)

Gregor Tassie's meticulously detailed account of Kondrashin's career suggests an ambitious, talented musician who managed to carve a successful career with great skill and judgement in a political environment where just one false move could have easily led to disastrous consequences. (Classical Recordings Quarterly)

About the Author
Gregor Tassie has written for magazines such as Gramophone, Musical Opinion, and Classical Record Collector. He is the author of Yevgeny Mravinsky: The Noble Conductor (Scarecrow, 2005).

Review
While we now see the contribution of the African American in American history as crucial and necessary to understand the “bigger picture,” this was not always the case. African-Americans in the Defense of the Nation will prove to be invaluable to the researcher because it encompasses so many early bibliographies of the “contribution and participation of African Americans in American wars, and this book covers both military exploits and home front support.” Controvich, who has a long history of compiling bibliographies and is an “avid collector of army unit histories,” presents a solid piece of scholarship here that will undoubtedly help future researchers. The topic is frequently more difficult with the “large number of descriptors that were used to describe the African American service person: Black, Colored, African American, Afro-American, Negro, and Freedman.” This work is organized chronologically and topically into chapters that cover both sexes too. This is a useful work filled with good research that is highly recommended.

There was a time not so long ago when articles and books on black participation in the armed forces were few and far between. Over the past thirty years, however, that situation has changed considerably. Anyone who doubts that fact need only to peruse the pages of African Americans in Defense of the Nation, a lengthy bibliography compiled by James T. Controvich, to learn that hundreds of works have been written about the contributions of African American men and women in all of the military services. . . .African Americans in Defense of the Nation is a useful and much needed bibliography that will be greatly appreciated by aficionados of black military history.
