Great for teens dealing with cancer, but I'm predjudiced

This is a great resource for anyone with teens dealing with various forms of cancer. I am somewhat biased, however, because my daughter is one of the teens that was interviewed for this book. I can tell you, however, that the stories are real, with very little editing for content. If you work with teens or have a teen going through cancer, this will help them realize that they aren't alone. Teens rarely WANT to join a group of other teens for anything, but this book can help them see that they aren't the only ones dealing with the various effects of treatment and the illness itself. Worth the money at full price, but there are several used books available. Check it out.

Japan's swift victory over China in 1894-1895, had already forced the West to take notice of this emerging rival in the East. But the East Asian island empire had yet to take on a European opponent. That would be the real test of Japan's military might. It came in 1904, when Japan clashed with Russia over the hegemony of the Hermit Kingdom of Korea and Manchuria. On paper, Russia seemed vastly superior. Czar Nicholas II had a standing army of 1,100,000 men, with a reserve of 2,400,000 men. Japan's regular army numbered 283,000 men and 870 artillery pieces, with 400,000 trained reserves. The Russian paper pre-dominates, however, was worth little more then the paper bearing the flat statistics.

East of Lake Baikal, in Russia's Far Eastern provinces, were only 83,000 field troops backed by 196 guns, along with 25,000 garrison troops and 30,000 railroad troops. For reinforcements and supply, the czar's army had to depend upon the 5,500-mile single track line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, connecting Moscow and Port Arthur, but including a 100-mile gap around Lake Baikal. On the sea, Russia could float 7 old battleships, 9 armored cruisers, 1 old cruiser, 25 destroyers, 17 torpedo boats, and 12 gunboats in the theater of operations. Most of the fleet was based at Port Arthur, which was located at the tip of the Liaotung Peninsula, a prime Japanese target. Four cruisers were based at Vladivostock and two more at Chemulpo (now Inchon). Japan had a modern fleet of 6 new battleships armed with 12-inch guns, 1 old battleship, 8 armored cruisers, 25 light cruisers, 19 destroyers, 85 torpedo boats, and 16 smaller vessels, manned by a total of 36,000 officers and men. The Japanese could match 14 modern capital ships firing a broadside of 37,600-pounds against Russia's 11 seaworthy capital ships with a 26,500-pound broadside.

In over 600 entries on collegiate and professional American football players, coaches, teams, leagues, and executives, Grasso (independent scholar) addresses the history of the sport. Individual entries are up to two pages long and have boldface cross-references to other articles. The book begins with a historical chronology of football and a good introductory essay that should provide novices with a basic understanding of this predominantly North American sport. Biographical entries include date and place of birth and death (if deceased); they offer narrative descriptions of players' football careers without including individual season and career statistics, which are readily available online. Entries for leagues, teams, and universities are particularly well-written and interconnect with the biographies to place individuals in the broader context of the history of the sport. Numerous appendixes include lists of award winners and league/collegiate champions; unexpected lists, such as one for foreign-born National Football League players, are also available. At the professional level, Grasso includes both American football and its slightly different counterpart north of the border, football as played in Canada. . . . On the whole, this is a very comprehensive effort for what is arguably the most popular spectator sport in North America. . . .Grasso deserves credit for keeping his entries short. For example, the entry on Vince Lombardi, one of the most important figures in the history of the NFL, is less than two pages in length. The appendices provide a wealth of information. . . .This should be a standard reference work for most libraries. John Grasso is an Olympic historian, he has been Treasurer of the International Society of Olympic Historians (ISOH) since 2004, and is a member of the Association for Professional Basketball Research (APBR), the North American Society for Sport History (NASSH), the Professional Football Researchers Association (PFRA) and was the founder of the International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) in 1982. He is the author of Historical Dictionary of Basketball (Scarecrow, 2010), and Historical Dictionary of Tennis (Scarecrow, 2011).

First published in 2004, this second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Kurds includes many new, expanded, and revised entries; dated items were deleted. Similar to the format of the other books in the various Scarecrow Historical Dictionaries series, most of the work comprises A–Z entries covering history, politics, sociology, geography, and other related topics. In addition, the book includes maps, a chronology, an introductory essay, and an unannotated topical bibliography. (One quibble: this series does not include bibliographical references after each entry.) Author Gunter has studied and written about Kurdish history and society for many years. He is to be commended for both his candor and rigor: “I have always sought to be as objective as possible without being egregiously politically correct.” Since the plight of the Kurds in Turkey and Iraq is featured in current Middle East news and inspires growing interest in their history, this useful and well-researched reference book will undoubtedly inform and educate readers in academic and large public libraries. A cache of black-and-white photographs at the book's center offers an enriching glimpse of significant Kurdish sites and figures. This second edition covers significant historical events, people, and places in Kurdish history from 401 BCE to early 2010. Gunter (Tennessee Technical Univ., Cookeville), a respected expert, has written numerous books, book chapters, and journal articles on Kurdish history and politics. Even with its broad historical scope, covering 2,000-plus years of history, this work does a very good job of presenting both introductory overviews and detailed information within each entry. The dictionary begins with an acronyms/abbreviations section that is essential for understanding the work and for studying the subject more broadly. An excellent, detailed chronology of significant historical events follows. Well worth reading, the introduction provides an overview of the region, economy, and historical background of the Kurds. Entries are well written and contain multiple cross-references that are boldfaced for easy identification. Michael M. Gunter is professor of political science at Tennessee Technological University. He also has been teaching in the summers since 2002 at The International University in Vienna, Austria. He is the author of a number of scholarly acclaimed books dealing with the Kurds.

After reviewing the instrument's distinctive musical features, Ralph Lee Smith presents the dulcimer's story chronologically, tracing its roots in a Renaissance German instrument, the scheitholt; describing the early history of the scheitholt and the dulcimer in America; and outlining the development of distinctive dulcimer styles in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. The story continues into the 20th Century, through the final group of tradition-based Appalachian makers whose work flowed into the national scene of the Folk Revival.

This fully revised edition provides expanded information about the history of the scheitholt and the dulcimer before the Civil War and discusses traditions and types that are still being discovered and documented. Smith also adds his personal adventures in searching for the dulcimer's history. A new final chapter describes types and styles that do not fit conveniently into the mainstream development of the instrument. The book concludes with several appendixes, including measurements of representative dulcimers and listings of dulcimer recordings in the Archive of Folk Culture of the Library of Congress.

Ralph Lee Smith teaches a course in dulcimer history at the annual Dulcimer Playing Workshop at Appalachian State University, of which I am the director. His presentations are invariably among the high points of the Workshop. Through him, we all keep in touch with the dulcimer's beautiful heritage in the mountains, and the people of the mountains who have handed the dulcimer down to us. This charming book contains much of the exciting information and many of the tales that he brings to us each year. For people who love the dulcimer, and people who love the mountain world even if they aren't familiar with the dulcimer, this book is a treasure. Don't miss it!

Appalachian Dulcimer Traditions is an attractive, informative and fun book to read. Who would think a detailed historical treatise on this rather unusual folk instrument would be such a treat. Ralph Lee Smith's folksy writing style reveals his equal love for the dulcimer and its people. Get ready for an adventure. You'll wind your way up into a part of Americana steeped in tradition, hairpin curves and high mountains. Smith cleverly peels back the folds of time to reveal a remarkable account of the dulcimer, its interesting characters and music. Scattered throughout the book among the many photos and llustrations are vignettes about the humble people of the mountains, their character and struggles. All evolve together in this intriguing account of the dulcimer and those who continue to scratch out a living in the mountains of the eastern United States. This book is a jewel! *****

A great book for the novice player and the historian

A great book! It is a good reference work on the mountain dulcimer. Mr. Smith has performed a great service to everyone interested in it. It is a tremendous history lesson on the development of the mountain dulcimer and is loaded with photographs documenting how it has changed from its roots to what it is today. It also identifies those people who were important in its development. A real historical learning experience for the novice player and, I would assume, the experienced, too. If you're interested in the dulcimer or just an Appalachian history buff, you will like this book.
