About the Author
John Yaffé is an internationally active conductor of opera and symphonic works. Excellent book with an over all view of singing in the Russian language. It also contains a wealth of information about Russian composers and their vocal music. There is also a CD to help with pronunciation.

A good source

I found this book to be very helpful while learning some Rachmaninoff songs. Although I wish it contained some more in-depth information. I'd like more detail on the differences between the hard and soft sounds. Specific descriptions on the mouth positions for proper execution of each sound that doesn't occur in English would be tremendously helpful. I was confused with the soft vowel descriptions where she says not to include a glide, but the recording clearly does. I also wished she used IPA. I love IPA. I also relied on "The Singer's Rachmaninoff" by Natalia Challis and as many recordings of Russian singers that I could get my hands on. With these 3 sources, I think I did a decent job on the Russian. With this book I found I was successfully able to do my own phonetic transcriptions of the Cyrillic (I compared with the transcriptions in "The Singer's Rachmaninoff"). So I feel purchasing the book was definitely worth it. I don't know of many other sources on Russian diction. I have not read anything beyond the diction chapters (yet), but I am looking forward to it and excited to learn more Russian music.

In many ways, Carr's was the harder and most crucial job, named league president in 1921 when 'post graduate football' was not a serious competitor to college football or major league baseball. Willis (head of research lib., NFL Films) reminds us that Carr drew up and enforced the bylaws of the league and continually pushed it forward by recruiting a stable ownership group in large U.S. cities. Carr's years in sports management also embraced basketball and baseball. Willis relates Carr's life in comprehensive detail from a wealth of interviews and use of Carr's archives. The Best I Have Ever Read!!!

This book is by far the best book I have ever read on the founding and early years of what we know today as the National Football League. As a historian of the NFL with a special affection towards the early days, this book captures the simplicity as well as the complicity of the early NFL and the struggles that Joe Carr and the NFL founders grappled with on a regular basis. These issues included, but were not limited to college player eligibility, big city teams, gambling, rule changes to separate the NFL from the college game, and the vision of indoor football which was first approached in the early 30's. This book is a real page turner for the ardent student of the game as well as the casual reader. To sum it up, there would be no NFL without Joe F Carr. This book chronicles the history of the NFL by year from the town teams through Joe Carr's untimely death in 1939. It concludes with his posthumous induction into the Pro football Hall of Fame as a member of the NFL's charter classs. Overall this book belongs in the elite class of Maraniss's "When Pride Still Mattered", McCambridge's "America's game", and Miller's "Going Long. A Must Read! A heartfelt thank you Chris Willis!!

The Consumate Commissioner

This is a solidly documented and well-written book about a little known man who played a key role in one of the United States' main cultural institutions. I was surprised to learn about all the activities and roles that Carr played in the development of professional sports in the early decades of the twentieth century.

There are so many intriguing characters, from Papa Bear Halas and department store owner Max Rosembloom to the squire of dry cleaning in Washington, D.C., George Preston Marshall. While acknowledging the importance of these men in the development of professional football, Willis brings Joe Carr back into the picture.

A must read for any one who likes NFL history

I have been a fan of the NFL for decades. I thought I had a good knowledge of the early years. Not so. Joe Carr was instrumental in molding the NFL through its early lean years when "football clubs" came and went regularly. Originally a coach in Columbus, Ohio, he (along with George Halas, Curly Lambeau, the Maras among others) kept improving the game both on and off the field. At the time of his death, he had the NFL poised to be financially solvent, competing successfully with college football for fans, and fundamentally sound. With out him, there never would be a Pete Rozelle...or Roger Goodell for that matter. Great read.

A chronology covers events from the beginning of the War of Spanish Succession in 1702 until the May 2012 expulsion of Syrian diplomats from London following a massacre during the ongoing Syrian civil war. The Ismailis, who make up the second-biggest branch of Shi'a Islam, live primarily in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The most famous Ismaili today is the Aga Khan, who is considered the current spiritual leader of the community. In the eighth century, a split occurred in the Shi'a community over the true leader of the group. Ismailis followed imam Isma'il ibn Jafar as their rightful leader, rather than Musa al-Kadhim. In the 1930s, discoveries of lost historical documents in private collections reopened this area of study.
