About the Author
David W. Dent is professor emeritus of political science and Latin American Studies at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the author of over 100 articles, essays, and chapters on Latin American politics and inter-American relations. He was instrumental in founding the Model Organization of American States (MOAS) in 1980 and prepared university students to participate in the MOAS for twenty years.

Larman C. Wilson is professor emeritus of international relations at American University, Washington, D.C. He was awarded fellowships at The Hague Academy's Centre for Studies and Research in International Law and International Relations (1974) and the OAS's Inter-American Juridical Committee's Course on International Law (1976).

Bushard (music history, U. of Nebraska, Lincoln) presents a musicological and sociological analysis of Leonard Bernstein's one and only film score that he wrote for On the Waterfront. Half of the book is devoted to biographical and social contextualizing, which Bushard argues is important to understand the true merits and influence of Bernstein's score. To this end, he reviews Bernstein's musical and dramatic background prior to making the film, outlines the significance of anti-communism in the life of Bernstein and the film's director, Elia Kazan, and interrogates the existential crises that the Cold War and suburban flight generated. Two chapters focus on the score or directly musical considerations itself: the second chapter, which considers Bernstein's compositional method, and the last chapter that analyzes the score piece by piece. Because of the context Bushard provides, this text could be useful in a class on cultural or film history, while the analysis itself will be of interest to people with musical training. My kind of country

Excellent collection of essays on one of the more intriguing novels and films in recent years. Definitely a boon for scholars, fans, and all interested readers. The range of styles and approaches is fascinating, and I love the different interpretations of so many aspects of the novel and film, but particularly those examining one of the greatest cinematic killers of all time: Anton Chigurh. But what would Oprah think?

Not what the title suggests. One and a half stars.

I thought this book would be about how to take a novel, adapt it into a screenplay, and all of the research processes involved.

Yet, it is not that at all.

I didn't get past the first chapter, when I couldn't help but sigh loudly and close the book.

This book is actually about masculinity in the film and how the author as a viewer wants all her students to think about it.

Once a Sociology student, I can appreciate the topic. But what a horrible movie to choose. It would seem that the only reasons the author did, was because of the title of the movie and being jealous that it had won best picture that year.

Why not Tootsie? Would have been a way better movie to discuss masculinity in film.

Such a stupid and misleading book title.

The second edition, updating the first after a decade, continues in the publisher's ‘Historical Dictionaries of Europe’ series. These ubiquitous dictionaries all follow the same arrangement, providing a few maps, a chronology, and an introductory essay followed by the dictionary section, political appendixes, a glossary, and a bibliography. As the editor points out, the revised dictionary section offers more ‘persons, places, and events’ than the 2004 edition. Miljan describes himself as a native of Estonia who returned to his home country, and his introduction brings events up to March 2015. The entries, necessarily brief, cover a galaxy of information. For example, one learns that Neeme Järvi (Detroit Symphony Orchestra emeritus music director) is Estonian and largely responsible for introducing the music world to the work of Estonian musicians. Entries shed light on Estonian exiles, WW II, the German occupation, displaced persons, Finno-Ugric peoples, and many historical topics pertaining to the USSR. . . .The bibliography…provides a convenient way to verify the spelling of names. Toivo Miljan is Professor Emeritus at Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario. He is the founding Director of EuroFaculty to restructure teaching and learning of Economics, Law and Political Science at the national universities of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
