Great Commentary on Rozsa's Ben-Hur Score

This book elicits on-the-money details regarding Rozsa's composition aesthetic. While it does reiterate information already documented in Rozsa's autobiography, A Double Life, it does supply additional information for those of us who are avid fans of his work. The only negative is that it doesn't contain any full orchestral excerpts. I long for the day when the full orchestral score will be made available for study.

Today's films and TV programs abound with fictional scientists and inventors, but presentations depicting actual people in these professions are considerably fewer in number. Although not all performances are true to the original model, the media's influence on the public perception of scientists and inventors can be significant. This phenomenon interests historian Van Riper, whose research focus includes the social and cultural dimensions of modern science and technology. For this book, he limits his examination to well-known scientists and inventors presented in US films made and distributed since 1930 and in widely broadcast TV programs. Documentaries are not included, but animated depictions of named people are. Van Riper has come up with a list of more than 80 individuals, ranging from Hippocrates and Aristotle to Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. They are grouped into four periods: "Ancient through Enlightenment," "The Nineteenth Century," "The Twentieth Century to 1945," and "The Twentieth Century after 1945." A short, readable biography and evaluation of performance appearances is given for each individual, along with a short list of screen citations and list of books for further reading. Part of Scarecrow's "Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements" series, this second edition (1st ed., by Bailey, CH, Jul'04, 41-6237) has the usual arrangement of chronology, entries, and bibliography divided into subjects. Written by Durrant (Univ. of Glamorgan, Wales) and Bailey (Iowa State Univ.), the content is a conglomeration of material on ancient roots, historical European witchcraft, and demonology; similar beliefs in other cultures today (such as in the Caribbean and various African nations); and the modern religion of Witchcraft. Entries are short, with no bibliography, and include cross-references in the usual dictionary style. In the introduction, series editor Jon Woronoff seems to take a somewhat jocular attitude to the subject, assuring readers that the content is relevant and "far from hocus-pocus." With most of the entries focused on the history of western European witchcraft, this work will be of interest primarily to historians rather than practitioners or scholars of contemporary religious Witchcraft. Raugh’s exhaustive bibliography of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 is an astonishingly thorough guide to this conflict, for it not only chronicles the aforementioned famous battles but places them into the broadest possible historical context. In this regard, Raugh’s book is an invaluable tool for studying and researching the Anglo-Zulu War. His chapters are both chronological and topical, and identify a rich variety of source materials and hard-to-find publications. For example, Raugh’s guide begins with a general bibliographic overview of the political and economic background to the war. It then proceeds with an outstanding bibliography on the rise of Shaka and the Zulu kingdom. Comprehensive

The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 has been a very popular subject in recent years and in need of a comprehensive bibliography. This book fulfills the need. The author has read widely on the subject and is able to offer worthwhile annotations. Of course, there can never be too many annotations, but this volume has enough of them to merit description as an annotated bibliography. Although titled a "selected" bibliography, a book of this size plainly aims to be comprehensive. Whenever I see select with a bibliography not obviously short, I assume the author is asking the reader to believe that any omissions are deliberate. This book is good enough to drop the selected. There is a single significant problem and that is limiting the index to authors' names. This makes items without a name difficult to find as well as creating extra work for the user seeking an item written by a prolific author. Nevertheless, all of us interested in the topic are indebted to the author.

The 1879 Zulu War, although relatively short, continues to fascinate historians and enthusiasts alike today. Anyone wanted a study guide to published and unpublished material should have this book. The scope and variety of its contents, and value to researchers and historians, cannot be undervalued. One noted reader has written: "You have, most certainly, produced the Mendelssohn of the AZW [Anglo-Zulu War]; the bench mark for all future book references regarding this campaign. For a book collector such as myself, this is an invaluable addition to one's library. By your extending the book to incorporate so many aspects of Zulu history (and so adding vital background detail) adds to the book's 'must have' status."

Andre Kostelanetz On Records and On the Air is a comprehensive discography of the commercial recordings of the Russian/American conductor and radio personality, Andre Kostelanetz. James H. North has collected all his recordings, spanning the range from popular to classical. Organized chronologically by album, North provides the complete details of each recording: composer, song title, timing, date and site of the recording session, producer of that session, and matrix numbers, as well as every American issue of each recording. Several appendixes organize the information alphabetically by composer, song title, and album title, giving references back to the discography by date of recording. Available downloads from the Internet are included in the song title appendix. Two further appendixes deal with Compact Disc issues and with V-Discs, the records created by the United States Army and Navy for worldwide distribution to members of the Armed Forces during World War II.

Initially a request from the Andre Kostelanetz Estate, who has generously supported this work, the discography grew to include a complete coverage of Kostelanetz's appearances on the radio, from the 1920s through 1980 (plus a few on television), as North discovered that Kostelanetz's radio career was as important as his records to music in America. More than 1,000 broadcasts are covered, including both his radio shows and his concert broadcasts with symphony orchestras, and the contents of each program are listed where known. An important extra in the book is a survey of Kostelanetz's career and an evaluation of his achievements, contributed by noted radio historian Dick O'Connor. A foreword by the Archivist and Historian of the New York Philharmonic, Barbara Haws, completes this reference tool, which will be invaluable to the millions of fans who welcome the opportunity to peruse the details of one of the most beloved figures in music.

James H. North has been a music critic for 22 years, writing primarily for Fanfare and Classic Record Collector. He is the author of New York Philharmonic: The Authorized Recordings, 1917-2005: A Discography (Scarecrow, 2006) and Boston Symphony Orchestra: An Augmented Discography (Scarecrow, 2008).

This comprehensive volume contains a list of records, but even more info on his radio broadcasts

I have to be up front about this review and admit that - even though I'm a music journalist - I have an indirect connection with the subject. Conductor Andre Kostelanetz was a cousin of mine on my father's side. I only got to see him and meet him a few times during his life and have only recently re-connected with the remaining members of his family. (The Kostelanetz archive was transferred to the Library of Congress last year.)

This nearly-400-page volume by James North utilized both the Kostelanetz archive and the catalogs of Sony Music (the successor to Columbia Records, the label that Kostelanetz recorded for exclusively during is 50 year recording career.). The "Discography" actually only fills the first 78 pages. It's the Appendices that provide much of the "meat" of North's research. Here you will find the listings of Album Titles, a listing by song titles, another by composer and even a list of V-discs that were recorded for armed services use during World War II. More than 180 pages are filled with "Kostelanetz on the Air", providing details of the conductor's long running radio program as well as concerts that were recorded around the country and his television appearances.

The book was commissioned by the Kostelanetz Estate but will be of good use for classical music collectors and researchers as the conductor - mostly affiliated with the New York Philharmonic - commissioned important works by Aaron Copeland, William Schuman and others.
