Historical Dictionary of Islam (Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements Series), by Ludwig W. Adamec

There is both unity and variety in the Islamic world. Muslims are not a homogeneous people who can be explained solely by their normative texts: the Koran and the Sunnah. Muslims differ vastly in their interpretation of Islam: modernists want to reinterpret Islam to adapt to the requirements of modern times while traditionalists tend to look to the classical and medieval periods of Islam as their model of the Islamic state.

The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Islam presents a concise overview of Islamic history, religion, philosophy, and Islamic political movements. This is done through a list of abbreviations and acronyms, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and cross-referenced dictionary entries, which include the biographies and thoughts of medieval thinkers, as well as those of modern members of the religious and political establishments. Articles describe the major sects, schools of theology, and jurisprudence, as well as aspects of Islamic culture. Together, this book represents a brief introduction to the field of Islamic studies.

From Library Journal
Adamec (Middle Eastern studies, Univ. of Arizona), director of the Near Eastern Center for a decade, is a widely known authority on Afghanistan who has published many books and articles. The volumes in this Scarecrow series have varied in quality, but this dictionary fares well. Its clear, concise entries give basic facts, organized under headings in English, when available, rather than in Arabic. The book includes a chronology, an accessible historical introduction, and a considerable bibliography arranged by broad categories. Unfortunately, the book has a few drawbacks: some topics are missing (e.g., "Qa'im," similar to Mahdi); the need to compress sometimes distorts a subject, as in the article on Bab; and there is only one map. While larger libraries should be sure that they also have larger reference works on Islam (e.g., Encyclopaedia of Islam, Brill Academic; Encyclopaedia Iranica, Mazda), this book is a good acquisition for most public libraries and a useful supplementary quick reference for academic libraries. From Booklist
From theological, political, and cultural corners, there is a growing demand from student and layperson alike for clear, well-informed, and up-to-date information on the topic of Islam. The latest addition to the Scarecrow Press Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies, and Movements series effectively fills this need. With the inclusion of copious entries from all over the Islamic historical spectrum, author Adamec presents Islam as the complex, diverse religion that it is and not as the monolithic, antiprogressive entity it is sometimes viewed as by many in the West. An update to the 2001 edition, this alphabetically arranged, cross-referenced volume touches on various topics and figures from Islamic history, philosophy, and religion as well as the position of Islam in the modern political world. Included among the generally concise, well-written, and engaging entries are numerous biographies for cultural, religious, legal, and political leaders. A succinct chronology and edifying introduction both provide the necessary background information and place entries within the proper historical context. Adamec has skillfully navigated the tricky issue of Arabic terminology by providing main entries in English (where possible) with their Arabic equivalent (for example, Pilgrimage. “Hajj”). A major highlight of the work is the extensive categorized bibliography consisting of books and articles from the field of Islamic studies. Overall, this volume serves as an excellent pathfinder for both scholars and those with no prior knowledge of the subject. Academic and larger public libraries should consider adding this title even if they already have works such as The Oxford Dictionary of Islam (2004) and The Penguin Dictionary of Islam (2008). --Brian Odom

Review
The dictionary entries are well cross-referenced and lean towards compactness. As a dictionary, this work covers the Muslim Heartlands and Fundamentalist Islam well. (American Reference Books Annual)

Islam encyclopedia Dictionary 2009
By William Garrison Jr.
"Historical Dictionary of Islam" by Ludwig Adamec (2nd ed. 2009), in English, 459 pgs. CAUTION!! Besides having different intro press-release info & ISBNs, this book is EXACTLY the same as the author's "The A to Z of Islam" (2nd ed. 2009)!!! "A-Z" ISBN is 978-0-8108-7160-1 (paperback), whereas "Dictionary" is 978-0-8108-6161-9 (cloth) - SAME # of pages, SAME text !!! Highly Recommended. What I really like about this (encyclopedia) book is its many pages (343 pages) of wide-breadth scope of Islamic-related topics. Sadly, only 75% of the pages are devoted to Islamic-encyclopedic use; with the remaining quarter being a `Bibliography' of books pertaining to many Islamic-related topics - nonetheless, this book would still be useful even if its Bibliography had been excluded. Sadly, many other `popular' Islamic-related encyclopedias are short (less than 200 pages). This book covers many (short) topics: ghazw, muhtasib, economics, wahy, Nizariyyah, 'Year of Deputations', politics: Mirza Sultan-Galiev, history, Wasil ibn Ata, legal, government, millat, individuals, mihna, 'the White Streak', Islamist groups, even `Londonistan'. Other likeable aspects include that whatever topic is discussed it will very frequently include the appropriate Arabic word. If I recall my youthful Sunday School teachings, Jews consider the Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) as being Jewish; the author contends that Abraham was not (p. 10) - but that he was just a monotheist. Of relevance here is that the author does not state that Muslims consider Abraham to be a Muslim, and the entire Issac/Ishmael "oldest son" dispute is overlooked as to whether the Jews or Muslims are to have primary ownership of Israel-Palestine. The author sees `devshirme' of Christian boys as a `levy' rather than enslavement (p. 82). The author maintains that Muhammad married Jewish and Christian female captives for `political reasons' rather than lustful (p.330). Doesn't really `critique' Islamic beliefs. Still -- informative. [Also worthy: "Islamic Desk Reference" by van Donzel; "A Glossary of Islamic Terminology" by B.S. Abughosh.]

Review
This title fills a gap in the reference literature on South American cinema. Its scope is wider than Timothy Barnard and Peter Rist’s edited South American Cinema: A Critical Filmography, 1915-1994 (1996) or Luis Trelles Plazaola’s older but unrevised South American Cinema: Dictionary of Film Makers (1989), which focus on films and film directors, respectively. On the other hand, it is more narrowly focused than Scott Baugh’s Latino American Cinema: An Encyclopedia of Movies, Stars, Concepts, and Trends, which spans Latino cinema in the US and in South America. Rist covers South America only, but comprehensively, with material not only on films and directors, but also on performers, producers, film festivals, genres, and organizations. Included is an impressive chronology, arranged by year and then by country. Also featured is a valuable overview of South American cinema in the introduction and in the literature review preceding the thorough bibliography. The bibliography, geographically arranged after a 'General' section, covers books, articles, online articles, and websites, mainly in English, but also in French, Spanish, and Portuguese. A title index facilitates research on individual films. These enhancements, in addition to the wealth of information provided in the dictionary entries, should make this the go-to ready-reference title for its topic. Summing Up: Essential. Lower-level undergraduates and above. (CHOICE)

This new volume in the venerable Historical Dictionary of Literature and the Arts series seeks to promote the important contributions of South American films to the culture of world cinema. Peter H. Rist of Concordia University in Montreal brings years of research and film viewing to bear on over 300 entries discussing South American films, directors, producers, and performers. He discusses films from the 12 Spanish-speaking nations and Brazil (Portuguese) of the continent . . . [H]e includes only films produced in the region primarily for local audiences [and] he includes historical films (back to the late nineteenth century) intended for broader Spanish-speaking audiences. Each entry is cross-referenced and designed for efficiency. Entries for directors include biography, filmography, and critical commentary. A number of landmark films receive their own entry with a plot summary, notes on critical reception, and other contextual information. The volume includes a chronology, extensive bibliography (organized by nation), and index of titles. The text is quite readable and includes indigenous-language films as well as a short but helpful entry on the rise of women in the industry. Historical Dictionary of South American Cinema succeeds in encapsulating over 100 years of film production that is largely overlooked in general film histories. It covers a number of genres, including animation, art and popular film, documentaries, and regional favorites such as tango films. It can help round out a cinema and film criticism or history collection. (American Reference Books Annual)

The preface of this historical dictionary states that 'This book is an attempt to raise regard for SouthAmerican cinema to the level of that accorded the cinemas of the United States and countries in Europe', a worthy challenge and elegantly executed. Covering more than a dozen countries...and several languages, the work reaches back to the late 1890s for a truly historic and much-needed examination of the cinema of this region.....[T]he Historical Dictionary of South American Cinema is highly recommended for film studies, Latin American studies, international studies and general reference collections. (Reference Reviews)

The Historical Dictionary of South American Cinema covers the history of South American Cinema through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. Historical Dictionary of Guinea (Historical Dictionaries of Africa), by Mohamed Saliou Camara, Thomas O'Toole, Janice E. Baker

The most significant thing about Guinea is its potential. It is strategically located in West Africa, with a well-educated and hardworking population, and endowed with considerable natural resources, indeed, enough to make it reasonably affluent if properly utilized. But this potential has never really been tapped, due mainly to bad politics with military men following a charismatic politician, until finally democracy has been achieved. So, more than half-a-century after achieving independence, the question remains unanswered: which way will Guinea turn?

This fifth edition of Historical Dictionary of Guinea covers the full scope of Guinea’s history. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 800 cross-referenced entries on key events, leaders, governmental, international, religious, and other private organizations, policies, political movements and parties, economic elements and many other areas that have shaped the country’s trajectory. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Guinea.

Review
It has been a 9 years now since the 4th edition of this title was published, and Dr. O’Toole continues his long authorship of this work. For this edition he is joined by Camara, a Guinea native and professor of history at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, and Baker, a retired public servant who has written on Africa. As with many Third World nations, there is more information available for the turbulent post-1945 period, while the earlier eras suffer in comparison. The dictionary’s information has been revised and updated to reflect the changes in the last 10 years, and there are now over 800 alphabetically arranged entries—twice as many as published in the last edition. A chronology (3500 B.C.E. - 2013 C.E.) supplements the introduction that briefly describes the land and people, the pre-colonial history, and the more recent period since 1984 . . . [T]here are see references, and plentiful cross-references embedded within the text are identified by their heavy black print. The value-added features include a list of acronyms and abbreviations, and lists of government officials (e.g., presidents, prime ministers, governors). The lengthy bibliography is important as it provides a selection of citations to European and African materials not easily found elsewhere. . . .[T]here really are very few reference books on this poor West African country. This item is necessary for all African collections, and suitable for all other academic and large public library reference collections. (American Reference Books Annual)

21st-Century Gothic: Great Gothic Novels Since 2000, by Danel Olson

Selected by a poll of more than 180 Gothic specialists, the works described and evaluated in 21st CENTURY GOTHIC represent the most impressive Gothic novels and novellas written around the world between the years 2000-2010.

Contributors of the fifty-three all-new essays include award-winning novelists, playwrights, biographers, editors, psychoanalysts, forensic psychologists, criminologists, film scholars, humanities librarians, and many of the most influential neo-Gothic literary critics of the last thirty years.

Designed for the Gothic fan, student, and critic alike, this massive guide also includes a perceptive foreword by Horror scholar S.T. Joshi and an equally compelling introduction by Gothic anthologist Danel Olson. Small B&W reproductions of the novels' dust jackets preface each long original essay (often of works that have had as yet little sustained critical attention), and three appendices name consultants and contributors, honorable mentions, and novel publication data.

21st CENTURY GOTHIC aims to broaden the perspective and understanding of any student of literature from our Gothic times. A chapter averaging 5,000 words is presented on each of the following: The Angel Maker, Banquet for the Damned, Beasts, The Blind Assassin, The Book Thief,  The Bride of Frankenstein: Pandora's Bride, Candles Burning, The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein, Clowns at Midnight, Cold Skin, The Crimson Petal and the White, A Dark Matter, The Dark Tower Series, The Darkest Part of the Woods, The Dracula Dossier, The Eden Moore Trilogy, Eva Moves the Furniture, Fatal Women, Fingersmith, The Forgotten Garden, Four Souls, The Gargoyle, The Ghost Writer, Gould's Book of Fish, The Graveyard Book, Heart-Shaped Box, The Historian, The Horned Man, House of Leaves, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, The Keep, The Little Friend, Lost, The Lovely Bones, Lullaby, Martha Peake, The Meaning of Night: A Confession, Memoirs of a Master Forger, A Mercy, The Merrily Watkins Series, The Monsters of Templeton, Never Let Me Go,  No Country for Old Men, The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque: A Picturesque Terror, The Pumpkin Child, Real World, A Series of Unfortunate Events,  The Shadow of the Wind, The Terror,  The Thirteenth Tale, Thursbitch, The Twilight Saga, and White Apples.

Review
"Exhaustive in the best way. . . . Essential to anyone with a serious interest in the Gothic."
--Jennifer Egan, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning A Visit from the Goon Squad (2010)

"Impressive book. It's all very professional, thoughtful, historically illuminating, & engaging."
--Joyce Carol Oates, author of A Widow's Story: A Memoir (2011)

"It is that rare resource, a compendium of fascinating titles made all the more appealing by the erudite and insightful essays by leading writers and critics of the genre. After reading a few, you won't know whether you want to read more or hurry to your local bookshop and pick these titles up."
--Jerad Walters, publisher, Centipede Press

"A massive masterpiece of critical essays on gothic fiction. When I started out writing, it seemed as important to read analyses of gothic and supernatural works as it did to read the works themselves... This is for anyone seeking insight into what has been written in the horror genre."
-Thomas Ligotti, author of Teatro Grottesco (2006)

"Fascinating . . . well-thought out."
--Neil Gaiman, author of The Graveyard Book (2008)

Olson's anthology, which has a perceptive Foreword by horror scholar S.T. Joshi and an equally impressive Introduction by Olson, is an absolute must for university library collections, and for other libraries with an interest in the Gothic as a literary form. Not only does the volume include some of the pioneer critical voices in the Gothic field, but the up to date nature of the essays (studying novels which are so new as to have received little or no previous critical attention) makes the volume essential reading for anyone with an interest in the cutting edge of the field right now. Handsomely presented in pictorial glossy boards, the book is more attractive than the usual library cloth-bound edition without dustjacket, and is as attractive on the shelf as it is fascinating to read. Olson is to be congratulated for assembling such a stellar cast of contributors. A reading of 21st-Century Gothic will broaden the perspective an understanding of any student of Gothic and horror literature. (Weird Fiction Terminus)

Danel Olson’s impressive collection, 21st Century Gothic, aims to encourage critical attention towards Gothic novels published since the year 2000. Noting the global spread of Gothic in the twenty-first century, the editor has consulted over 180 experts on the subject to help him compile a list of the 53 most significant Gothic novels from the first decade of the new century....This book is likely to become a staple of contemporary Gothic courses and a useful reference for those conducting research in what is still a burgeoning field. Only time will tell whether the editor’s dreams for the collection will be realized, but for now it serves as a totemic declaration that a new era of the Gothic is upon us, deserving of critical attention as we seek to understand the fears and nightmares of a new century. (The Gothic Imagination)

21st-Century Gothic: Great Gothic Novels Since 2000 accomplishes exactly what its title proclaims. By way of polling over 180 specialists in the gothic field, such as critics, writers, and professors, Olson has compiled a collection of essays about 53 gothic novels published globally between 2000 and 2010. Far more than 53 gothic novels were published during that time, but Olson has chosen to present detailed analyses of over 5,000 words for each of the included novels rather than a brief overview of a larger number. . . . This text will allow readers and researchers to gain a feel for the field of gothic literature as well as serve as a specific resource for any of the included texts. (American Reference Books Annual)

New meets Old Gothic Literature- A librarian's opinion
By Katherine McGittigan
This compilation of essays provides an interesting look at modern gothic literature and how recent works (including the pop-culture hit Twlight) relate to traditional Gothic motifs. The articles are well-searched and written by reputable scholars in the field. This volume would be a worthwhile investment for academic libraries or the individual scholar or fan of gothic literature.

For Scholars and Fans
By R. Poole-Carter
Danel Olson has edited an excellent collection of essays and musings about gothic novels of the 21st century. Of course, this book is a great addition to libraries and a resource for scholars, but it is also a pleasure to savor for fans of gothic literature in its many guises. For those of us who appreciate the gothic of bygone times, 21st Century Gothic offers reassurance that the timeless themes and thrills continue with new generations of writers. I am fascinated by the essays on novels I've already read and enjoyed and am gathering a reading list of gothic lit to explore in the future.

This Historical Dictionary of Panama covers Panama’s unique history from the time of its Spanish colonization, through its connection to Colombia in the nineteenth century, and its long period of U.S. presence. Finally, an accurate historical record on Panamanian history.
By Panama 1821
This has to be one of the most important and authoritative books on the History of Panama that I was so fortunate to have come across. I was in search of accurate historical information about Panama's history, from its colonial status under Spain (300 years) to its joining as a member of Gran Colombia to its final and exhaustive and fortunate separation from Colombian rule, 1821-1903. I love when authors do their research and do it well. An educated mind has the greatest human potential. I thank Amazon for having this item in its store and to also with and much appreciation to Professor Thomas M. Leonard.

Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird: New EssaysFrom Scarecrow Press

In 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird was published to critical acclaim. To commemorate To Kill a Mockingbird's 50th anniversary, Michael J. Meyer has assembled a collection of new essays that celebrate this enduring work of American literature. These essays approach the novel from educational, legal, social, and thematic perspectives.

Harper Lee's only novel won the Pulitzer Prize and was transformed into a beloved film starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. An American classic that frequently appears in middle school and high school curriculums, the novel has been subjected to criticism for its subject matter and language. Still relevant and meaningful, To Kill a Mockingbird has nonetheless been under-appreciated by many critics. There are few books that address Lee's novel's contribution to the American canon and still fewer that offer insights that can be used by teachers and by students.

These essays suggest that author Harper Lee deserves more credit for skillfully shaping a masterpiece that not only addresses the problems of the 1930s but also helps its readers see the problems and prejudices the world faces today. Intended for high school and undergraduate usage, as well as for teachers planning to use To Kill a Mockingbird in their classrooms, this collection will be a valuable resource for all teachers of American literature.

A true classic
By mrliteral
There used to be a time that the word "classic" meant something. Nowadays, it seems to only mean "more than ten years old"; quality doesn't come into the equation at all. Take, for example, the cable channel American Movie Classics, which typically features movies that are forgettable regardless of age. I prefer the classic definition of "classic", one that means something that is not only really good but withstands the test of time.

Put another way, look at the Da Vinci Code. A decent book and a phenomenal best-seller, but will people still be reading it decades from now? Only time will tell. Time, however, has already told on Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, and it is clearly, by any use of the word, a classic. Although forty-seven years old, it is still as good as ever.

Set in the town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird tells the tale of the Finch family: widower father Atticus, young son Jem and younger daughter (and narrator) Scout. Atticus, an attorney, has been appointed to represent Tom Robinson, accused of raping a 19-year-old girl named Mayall Ewell. Since Tom is black and Mayall is white, guilt is assumed by most of the town and the trial a mere formality. The truth plays little part.

Maycomb is a stratified society. There are the "respectable" people, who - with or without money - are considered the aristocrats of the community. The Finches fit into this category. There are the poorer white people, from the poor-yet-proud Cunninghams to the "trashy" Ewells. At the bottom are the blacks. Though Atticus refuses to participate in this classism (and tries to lead his children to do the same), he is pragmatic enough to acknowledge its existence.

This novel may have the trial of Tom Robinson as its centerpiece, but there is plenty more going on as we take a tour of an impoverished town in the Deep South. With this book, Lee has written one of the Great American Novels. And while some great authors are not easily readable (for example, Faulkner), Harper Lee holds the reader from the beginning to end.

Has there been any author who has written something so great in his or her only effort? Yes, there are authors like Margaret Mitchell who wrote Gone With the Wind (which has a far more romantic version of the Old South), but her career was cut short by an early death; Lee is still around and still has no other books published. The one book she wrote, however, is considered one of the greatest novels ever written. It is a true classic.

My mother bequeathed her 1962 college edition hardcover to me in 1988, four years after I finished high school. It would be four more years before I myself went away to school, though I knew the story nearly by heart by then.

I reread Mockingbird every year at Eastertime, though I am not particularly religious, nor do I mark this time in any other particularly hopeful way. Many true bibliophiles I know still talk about this book and the way it changed them forever.

It deserves better than to be assigned reading to captive 6th and 10th graders. They read it then because they have to, not because some kind librarian or insightful teacher, or intuitive parent, sends it their way, like a lucky charm.

I am not a Southerner and unless you can call a Western New York born mother and an Owensboro, Kentucky bred father any sort of meaningful Southern influence in my life, I do not know why this story fits my life so well. It filled a need I never even knew was there until I closed its covers on first reading it.

I am a fan of both the writing and its message, its dual edged sword of hope and sorrow, the tragicomic aspect of its mood and setting.

I wanted to be Scout as a tomboy girl and when grown, to be Atticus; my cats have borne those monikers well.

I only wish my husband had not told me I could not name my own son after my hero.

A rare case where the movie and its inspiration are as beloved as its author, To Kill a Mockingbird, N words and all, needs to be read more---and not just as some lame excuse for a paper writing exercise. Scout, Jem and Dill come alive in these pages. They have meaning in their world and in this one.

The dialogue, minus a few colloquiallisms, is readable and real. You will laugh out loud at times when Scout makes her mind known to you.

You'll wish Atticus was a real man. Maybe you'll even feel a little guilty about wanting him to replace your father in real life.

And Tom Robinson? He'll break your heart. He should.

I was once told my Coleman family had some relation to Harper Lee's father's family and, if that bit of fiction has even the remotest grain of truth to it, I am even happier now than I was just having imagined it.

PLEASE READ THIS BOOK.

Review
Henshall uses the end of the Pacific War as his cutoff point in this dictionary of more than 800 cross-referenced entries covering key people, places, and events in Japan’s history. In a structure aligned with other works in this series, a chronology and introduction set up the entries, which are followed by appendixes that include the full text of the Yalta Agreement and a particularly extensive bibliography that merits its own introduction and table of contents. VERDICT A useful look at the forces that shaped modern-day Japan. (Library Journal)

This well-written collection of over 800 entries is a useful reference tool for those quick-answer questions about this long period of Japanese history and culture, which is not widely understood in the West. The entries vary in length, from a single paragraph to a few pages, and cover the important people, events, eras, themes, and issues that are the essential elements of Japan’s history. Professor Henshall, is also an expert on the Japanese language and writing system, so in this book a word, phrase, or incident in the Japanese language is frequently followed by the Japanese writing characters, and entry titles in English are followed by a Japanese translation and writing characters. . . .[T]here is a chronology (200,000 B.C.E. to 1945 C.E.), and an extensive 67-page bibliography arranged by topic, and including some appropriate Websites and journals. As is common in these types of reference books, there are numerous see and see also and in-text, cross-references, so that the reader can jump around inside the book to find related information. The appendixes have lists of the Emperors, Shoguns, and Prime Ministers, along with the texts of important documents, such as the Meiji Constitution of 1889, and items related to the Second World War. . . .The title under review is suitable for special collections, academic, and large public libraries. The work is also available as an e-book. (American Reference Books Annual)

This book is useful as a dictionary for those with an interest in Japanese history but could also have a place in a library as a basic introductory reference work covering Japanese history and culture up to 1945. (Reference Reviews)
