This volume is the seventy-first in Scarecrow’s Historical Dictionaries of Europe series, which began publishing in 1993. Most years have seen three to five new dictionaries in the series, but seven titles were issued in 2009. Covering the history of Greece beginning with the events leading up to its founding as a modern nation in 1830, the volume contains entries for significant persons (kings, presidents, soldiers, politicians, writers, artists) as well as for major historical events such as the Wars of Independence (1821–1828), the two world wars, and the junta that established a military dictatorship in 1967. Also represented are places, institutions, and aspects of culture, society, and the economy. There is no separate entry for the 2004 Olympic Games, although they are discussed briefly in the more general Olympic Games entry. Preceding the A–Z entries are a list of acronyms and abbreviations, three hard-to-read maps, a chronology, and an introduction. Following the entries are appendixes listing political rulers since 1828; national election results from 1946 to 2007; data on the geography, population, and more; and a few economic charts. An extensive bibliography concludes the volume. This work is for the student or researcher needing a quick reference to a particular modern Greek person, event, or place. About the Author
Dimitris Keridis is associate professor of international politics at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece. He served as the founding director of the Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe at Harvard University and as the Karamanlis Associate Professor in Hellenic and Southeast European Studies at the Fletcher School, Tufts University.

Excellent Greek Reference Tool for English-Speakers

Extremely informative and concise, as you would expect from a good reference book. Having all the major events and persons of modern Greek history listed in alaphabetical order is Very Convenient! All you need is a name, and you can look it up and get the period of time and historical information surrounding that name or event. As with other reference books, it's meant to help Start your research. In most entrires, names or events that are described elsewhere in the volume are highlighted. I think for English-speakers who are trying to get their bearings on modern Greek history, this is an indispensable reference tool.
