Historical Dictionary of Chinese Intelligence (Historical Dictionaries of Intelligence and Counterintelligence), by I. C. Smith, Nigel Wes

Although China’s intelligence activities may not have been well documented, they can be traced back to the ancient writings of Sun Tzu, and espionage has been a characteristic of Chinese domestic politics and international relations ever since. The People’s Republic of China has long engaged in espionage, but relatively little is known about Chinese techniques, methodology, personnel, and organizations in comparison with what the West has learned about other more conventional intelligence agencies that conduct operations across the world. Whereas most intelligence services have suffered damaging defections, the number of Ministry of State Security professionals who have switched sides is relatively small, further limiting outside knowledge.

The Historical Dictionary of Chinese Intelligence covers the history of Chinese Intelligence from 400 B.C. to modern times. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and an index. The dictionary section has over 400 cross-referenced entries on the agencies and agents, the operations and equipment, the tradecraft and jargon, and many of the countries involved. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Chinese Intelligence.

Review
This title’s chronology mirrors its focus: one page covers 400 BCE (Sun Tzu) to CE 1913, whereas information on the 20th century occupies eight pages, and the 21st, two. The fascinating introduction contrasts Soviet and Western styles of espionage with the fundamentally different Chinese style....This volume compiles an impressive amount of data. (Library Journal)

Suitable for the reference collections of academic and large public libraries, along with specialized collections in intelligence, political science, or Chinese history. (American Reference Books Annual)

The present volume has been written jointly by a former FBI officer specializing in Chinese intelligence, and a well-known British writer on intelligence matters. They have provided about 370 articles, ranging in length from 30 to over 3,000 words....The dictionary offers extensive quotations from an MI5 briefing to British companies on the dangers of Chinese espionage. About the Author
I.C. Smith was one of the top investigators with the FBI for some 25 years working in Chinese counter-intelligence. In 1980 he was promoted to the FBI’s Senior Executive Service and appointed the State Department’s Chief of Investigations, Counterintelligence Programs, and Diplomatic Security. He then entered the FBI’s National Security Division and was Section Chief for Analysis, Budget and Training, responsible for liaison with foreign intelligence and security agencies and represented the FBI in the U.S. Intelligence Community and on the National Foreign Intelligence Board. Since retirement in 1998 he lectures at the Joint Counterintelligence Training Academy, the Office of the Counterintelligence Executive, and testified before the U.S. China Commission on the intelligence threat of the PRC.

Nigel West is currently the European Editor of the International Journal of Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence and teaches the history of postwar intelligence at the Centre for Counterintelligence and Security Studies. He is the author of many books, including the Historical Dictionary of British Intelligence (Scarecrow, 2005), Historical Dictionary of International Intelligence (Scarecrow, 2006), Historical Dictionary of Cold War Counterintelligence (Scarecrow, 2007), and Historical Dictionary of Sexspionage (Scarecrow, 2009). In October 2003 he was awarded the U.S. Association of Former Intelligence Officers' first Lifetime Literature Achievement Award.

Incomplete and Lacking Thought
By Meng Peide
To put it mildly, this book is a profound disappointment after spending $65. It is more useful as an expensive index than as a handy desk reference, given the number of factual errors and holes in its coverage as well as the failure to include citations outside of a bibliography. Adding voluminous citations may seem like academic affectation; however, the mistakes and omissions do not give the authors (and by extension the publisher) the credibility to forego such transparency.

The chronology, cross-referencing within entries, and a thorough index are useful and deserve better material than contained in the book. The volume also provides useful entries on a handful of figures obscure in the West and more than a few economic espionage cases. Unfortunately, while these features may salvage a star, they are insufficient to rescue the book from its many problems.

The biggest criticism is that Smith and West's effort is horribly incomplete. Certainly any effort to cover modern Chinese intelligence history is going to involve tradeoffs, but it is hard to justify the gaping holes while there are four-page entries on PLA Air Force dogfights, irrelevant entries like Uzbekistan, and coverage of spies who did not really impact Chinese intelligence history like Richard Sorge (a Soviet intelligence officer most famous for his exploits in Tokyo in the 1930s). Below are just a few examples of omissions and problems within the text that can hardly be considered excusable:

-- Not a single military intelligence officer from the last thirty or forty years is covered, even the obvious ones where English-language information is available such as the notorious Xiong Guangkai and the recently replaced Ma Xiaotian. Both received coverage in the China Leadership Monitor run out of the Hoover Institute at Stanford. This is not an obscure publication for anyone with a professional interest in China, given that the authors are some of the leading lights of the China field, e.g. Alice Miller, Joseph Fewsmith, James Mulvenon, Barry Naughton, Li Cheng, and Michael Swaine.

-- Only two Ministers of State Security (the civilian intelligence chief) even have entries. Given that the Ministry of State Security was created in 1983 and has had only four chiefs over 29 years, it does not seem like an unreasonable expectation that all four have an entry or that the entries be more than cursory. For example, Geng Huichang is only listed as the current minister, but none of his previous positions such as head of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations are listed despite their presence in the public record. Additionally, the authors do not include a single vice minister, some of whom presumably have identifiable public traces.

-- Important dates in the history of modern Chinese intelligence, such as the founding of Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) first intelligence departments in the 1920s and 1930s, are not included. A lot of space, however, gets spent on entries, such as the First Opium War (1839-1842), that have only tenuous relevance for understanding China's intelligence apparatus.

-- The three PLA services (army, navy, and air force) get coverage and, despite not relating the entry to intelligence functions, they have lengthy entries that are not more valuable than a quick trip to FAS, GlobalSecurity.org, or Wikipedia. Better still, interested readers should go find the National Bureau of Asian Research's Strategic Asia 2012-13: China's Military Challenge, Dennis Blasko's The Chinese Army Today: Tradition and Transformation for the 21st Century (Asian Security Studies) or the writings on the PLA coming from the Naval War College faculty----all of which cost significantly less.

-- Famous Chinese intelligence officers get omitted altogether, such as Qian Zhuangfei and Hu Di, two of the "Three Heroes of the Dragon's Lair," while the third, Li Kenong, gets four short sentences, despite being a leading intelligence officer for 30 years. Chen Geng, one of Zhou Enlai's operational chiefs, and Pan Hannian, an important operative during the 1930s and 1940s, also go unmentioned. Readers unfamiliar with this history might see this as nitpicking; however, all of these individuals (and more) receive prominent mention in the sources Smith and West claim to cite in their bibliography. The authors excuse their lack of coverage of these people, because they claim Chinese books and memoirs do not exist----a statement flatly contradicted by China expert David Chambers who is researching this period (see his recent article on the historiography of Chinese intelligence in Studies in Intelligence).

-- Finally, if Peter Mattis is to be believed (see the Diplomat and Studies in Intelligence), then, contrary to Smith and West, the Chinese do define intelligence differently than information and probably put a greater emphasis on intelligence's relevance to decision making than their Western counterparts. Why Smith and West insist the Chinese do not distinguish between intelligence and information without noting a single Chinese source in their bibliography that might have bearing on the question staggers credulity. But it speaks to the sloppiness inherent throughout the volume.

Providing access to the critical and interpretive literature about religious communication is significant and plays a central role in the recent trend in American historiography toward cultural history, particularly as it relates to numerous collateral disciplines: sociology, anthropology, education, speech, music, literary studies, art history, and technology. Review
An especially commendable feature is O'Brien's commitment to inclusion, a determination to look broadly across the religious landscape. On this point he admirably succeeds, bringing together an extensive array of resources from across the theological spectrum that include women, as well as resources that include perspectives other than Catholic or mainline Protestant. O'Brien has produced a substantive foundation for bibliographic studies in Christian communication. This work is highly recommended for academic libraries of all types. (American Reference Books Annual)

With access to so many electronic databases, good bibliographies are hard to find today. This expansion of a previously published bibliography in 1993 provides summative annotations of published scholarly works that discuss communication methods of clergy, churches, associations, and religious publishing houses. Organized by historical periods, the bibliography includes examinations of such topics as evangelist television, Native Americans, science, captivity narratives, and slavery. While the bibliography focuses on religion, much of American life is tied to religious beliefs and activities, and as such, this work is useful for a wide range of American cultural studies. Recommended for academic libraries. (Reference and User Services Quarterly)

David Lynch: Beautiful Dark (The Scarecrow Filmmakers Series), by Greg Olson

For nearly 40 years, David Lynch's works have enthralled, mystified, and provoked viewers. Lynch's films delve into the subjective consciousness of his characters to reveal both the depraved darkness and luminous spirituality of human nature. From his experimental shorts of the 1960s to feature films like Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and I.N.L.A.N.D. E.M.P.I.R.E., Lynch has pushed the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. In David Lynch: Beautiful Dark, author Greg Olson explores the surreal intricacies of the director's unique visual and visceral style not only in his full-length films but also his early forays into painting and short films, as well as his television landmark, Twin Peaks. This in-depth exploration is the first full-length work to analyze the intimate symbiosis between Lynch's life experience and artistic expressions: from the small-town child to the teenage painter to the 60-year-old Internet and digital media experimenter. To fully delineate the director's life and art, Olson received unprecedented participation from Lynch, his parents, siblings, old school friends, romantic partners, children, and decades of professional colleagues, as well as on-set access to the director during the production of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. Throughout this study, Olson provides thorough analyses of the filmmaker's works as Lynch conceived, crafted, and completed them. Consequently, David Lynch: Beautiful Dark is the definitive study of one of the most influential and idiosyncratic directors of the last four decades.

Review
Simply put, the book, "Beautiful Dark" by Greg Olsen is a work of art...The one thing that hits you about this book is the amount of passion that Olsen has put into his work....Olsen covers nearly every imaginable work that Lynch has ever done to date and does so with great enthusiasm and passion. He insightfully moves between Lynch's works with a precision that is both refreshing and exhaustive at the same time. The result is a chance between two worlds...into a place where no one has gone before....So if you were hesitating picking this one up, as Coop would say, "Every day, once a day, give yourself a present..." And grab this book today! (Brian Kursar Dugpa.Com, 10/4/08)

A thorough-going critical study of Lynch's works in all media that is firmly embedded in a clear biographical narrative and backed by lengthy interviews with almost everyone in his life....The result is exactly the kind of complex, keen-eyed but sympathetic critical biography one wishes every great filmmaker could receive. (Dga Quarterly)

With unprecedented access to Lynch, his parents, family, and colleagues, Olson has captured and defined the raw, mysterious energy that flows through the works of this iconoclastic auteur. (Zentralblatt für Geologie und Paläontologie, February 2009)

Olson's comprehensive biography of this highly original filmmaker contains a wealth of information, much of it previously unpublished. (CHOICE, June 2009)

Beautiful Dark - A work of art...
By dugpa
Simply put, the book, "Beautiful Dark" by Greg Olson is a work of art. Even though I had seen it coming for years now, I never expected it to affect me the way it did. I have to admit, that for years, being a long time fan of Lynch, I have read practically every Lynch related book, news article, and watched every interview that I could possibly get my hands on. After reading this book, I was overwhelmed to find out how much I didn't know about the man, and how much more I have come to appreciate what a beautiful person David Lynch truly is.

The one thing that hits you about this book is the amount of passion that Olson has put into this work. From the first page, Olson brings the reader into the personal world of David Lynch. Through interviews and conversations with Lynch, his family members, close friends, romantic partners, and professional colleagues, the result is an unprecedented, up close and personal view of Lynch's life that has never been seen before.

Olson crafts this work in a beautiful narrative that places the reader right up there with Lynch as he grows up and discovers art, film, music, life, and love. You are there beside Lynch through his relationships with his romantic partners, through his hardships, his pain, and his victories. At the same time, having written this book over the course of 10 years, Olson weaves seamlessly to narrate back to the perspective of a onlooker, detailing what it was like during various times over the years of how the public and media were reacting to Lynch's work, and what it was like to be alive and experiencing Lynch's work as it was happening.

Olson covers nearly every imaginable work that Lynch has ever done to date and does so with great enthusiasm and passion. He insightfully moves between Lynch's works with a precision that is both refreshing and exhaustive at the same time.

The result is a chance between two worlds... into a place where no one has gone before. Olson brings you to a seat at a table in a New York restaurant owned by Dino Laurentiis where across from you Lynch is laying his eyes on Isabella Rossellini for the first time. You are given rare access to stories from the set of Twin Peaks where we are told where the idea of creamed corn came from and what Mark Frost's reaction to it. Olson takes you on a magical journey to the set of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me as you watch Lynch gently kiss Sheryl Lee on the cheek. You become an onlooker of a tragic car crash that brings Lynch and his ex-wife together to care for their daughter, Jennifer through months of multiple back surgeries. As you listen to Jennifer, you come to realize why it is so important for Jennifer to follow in her father's footsteps.

I won't spoil the any more for you, however, I will say that this book gets my highest possible recommendation. Olson goes above and beyond to bring us a rare glimpse into the life of David Lynch and brings home the goods! So if you were hesitating picking this one up, as Coop would say... Every day, once a day, give yourself a present.... And grab this book today!

Ever Wanted Someone To Explain Something But Not Ruin It?
By William M. Neal
This book is a gem. If even you're not a fan of Lynch, or movies, it can inspire you to great heights with the spiritual search of an artist...sure, there's plenty left out, and, in some cases, you really don't want to meet your heroes...but, so what? You get a sense that here is a person on a spiritual quest, not just a workaholic, or some kind of weird, driven "monster".
I've always wanted someone to tell me what they think, of what I saw, and this guy does it with elan. He goes through and, though maybe he just says his point of view, but for me, it explains a lot about the films I've seen, which, until now; a lot of them have been opaque. And, if you like a little mystery revealed, it is not so good. It's quite painful in fact. There's pain of course here, in learning of the lives of Lynch and his family and family of friends and co-conspirators, but plenty of pleasure as well. By the end of this heavy and very long (Almost 700 pages! Which read fast.) you sure wish like anything you too could write; or paint, or dream on canvas; and produce so much work that people got into it as much as you do.
Check out the book. Learn about Olson, Lynch, his family, friends, co-workers, and YOU!

"The Sunshine Bores the Daylights Out of Me"
By Suzinne Barrett
Such was a line from one of the Stones finest songs ("Rocks Off"), and it easily applies to the psyche of film director, David Lynch. His work has fascinated me for quite a while now, and it all started way back when in 1980 (or thereabouts) which was when my introduction to David Lynch took place. First saw "Eraserhead" at the Waverly in the West Village here in New York City. Clearly, I remember gazing up at the poster in the theatre window and having serious trepidation about seeing this. "Should we?" "Shouldn't we?" I was scared. Well, all I can say is there has never been another film even remotely like it. Strange doesn't even begin to describe it. Suggestion: it's not the kind of movie you can munch popcorn to because the overwhelming feeling in the audience is nausea!

Okay, onto this book. Picked this up at my local library and first off was a little surprised at the heft of this. I mean David Lynch hasn't really made that many films. What I found out was the reason for the extreme length is the author's downright ridiculous detail of all the movie plots. I would enjoy hearing about how Lynch came up w/ his screenplays and the process of filming, but not a play by play of each scene. On the other hand, Greg Olson does shed some light (no!) on "Mulholland Drive," which was a very opaque movie. I saw the film after reading the raves, but damn if I didn't have a clue what was going on. And, as par for the course w/ Lynch, this film moves at what seems a snail's pace. It drove me crazy. Actor Naomi Watts contributes here about her experience on the film and what just might be the role of her career.

No discussion of Lynch would be complete w/o including Lynch's piece de resistance, "Blue Velvet." This biography gives some nice detail of the posturing by a variety of actors to secure the truly outrageous role of Frank Booth. But there was only one man born to play that role, and that man was Dennis Hopper. And knowing a golden opportunity, Hopper simply stated to David Lynch "I AM Frank Booth." No joke - Dennis Hopper was pretty much that same drug fueled psychotic while filming Apocalypse Now! in the Philippines circa 1976.

Other interesting tangents include "Twin Peaks" and Kyle McLagen. Also, singer Julie Cruise admits she was traumatized by her working relationship w/ David Lynch. Love the music they created together and have enjoyed the CD that resulted from their collaboration. That said, this book offers a straightforward portrait of one of the weirdest directors to have ever graced this planet. My only major criticism would be tighter editing because there's TMI (too much information) about the individual films.

From the Arthouse to the Grindhouse: Highbrow and Lowbrow Transgression in Cinema's First CenturyFrom Scarecrow Press

While there are numerous books on art and exploitation cinema, very few attempt to examine both. Covering the first 100 years of cinematic transgressions, From the Arthouse to the Grindhouse is a collection of numerous essays representing key contributions to overlooked, forgotten, or under-analyzed parts of film history. From cult favorites like Arch Hall Jr. to revered but under-documented marquee names like Lon Chaney, filmmakers both major and minor are covered here.

Starting with a section that pairs exploitation pioneers like Dwain Esper alongside cutting edge auteurs like Erich Von Stroheim, the volume documents the bleeding edge of the high/low cultural divide. Other essays examine the sexual melodramas of Weimer German cinema, explore the concept of Borat as a model for the new standardized cult film, and discuss the films of directors Tod Browning, Pier Pasolini, and Peter Watkins. This volume also contains a section devoted to the idea of "reality" inside and outside the documentary sphere, emphasizing audiences' desire to believe that "this is really happening," whether they're horrified or titillated. Addressing many aspects of "transgression" in cinema, these essays suggest that the distance between the venues and the audiences may not be quite as wide as viewers might imagine.

From the Arthouse to the Grindhouse: Highbrow and Lowbrow Transgression in Cinema's First Century offers an interesting examination of a niche market in the film exhibition industry including exploitation films, sexual melodramas, cult films, and documentaries. A Lofty Exploration Of Highbrow And Lowbrow In Cinema History
By 4-Legged Defender
[FROM THE ARTHOUSE TO THE GRINDHOUSE - (2010) - Edited by John Cline and Robert Weiner] A highly articulate and informative cultural collection of essays concerning the trajectory from how cinema and movie theaters themselves went from one extreme to another through the decades, as well as profiles of certain prominent and not-so-prominent figures within the various genres that determine both art and transgressive cinema, this book will have a decidedly small audience but deserves a much greater one for a variety of reasons. As someone who has cultured a huge illumination in both fields, I learned quite a few things heretofore unknown, which is why I read these books in the first place. I'm not looking for confirmation on my studious intake; I'm searching for new insight, appreciation and historical context to complete the puzzle that has pretty much governed cinema since its infancy, and that's exploitation and transgression in film, though you'll never find a snooty Criterion release connoisseur to concur with that ideology.

The relationship between art films and trash cinema is an incestuous one that straddles a slippery slope and frequently ends up with one foot in each, and this point is driven home in several essays within. As example, post WWII cinemas (especially the smaller ones relegated to B-movies) found attendance slipping after the heyday of Horror films, and began showing inexpensive foreign films to a niche audience. Foreign films were more relaxed in matters concerning sex, were therefore unsuitable for children and, as a result, marketed to adults by hiking up the sexual aspects of these films in ad campaigns along with admission fees. Now being touted for 'adults only', over time these boundaries were being pushed in European fare as more sex was incorporated into the films during the 50's and early 60's, so they were the first to make the transition to even steamier subject matter as the decade evolved and before the MPAA was created in 1968, and then most of the cinemas hosting them logically began to showcase more 'cutting edge' movies and Eurocult oddities that later morphed into porn by the early 70's. So the arc from arthouse (foreign films) to grindhouse (adults only and porno) is clearly established, much to the chagrin of those in the former camp.

There are chapters on early exploitation pioneers like Dwayne Esper ('Reefer Madness', among others), Eric von Stroheim, Tod Browning, Doris Wishman, Lon Chaney Sr., David Friedman, Pier Paulo Passolini, 70's pornstar Jamie Gillis (now how's THAT for a jump?), Arch Hall Jr., Peter Watkins and even Borat (yes, that would be Sacha Baron Cohen's character creation) - is any of this making sense yet? Then get the book, 'cause it all falls into place very comfortably and rationally within. Other inclusions are essays on the 30's 'Erotica in the Service of Social Hygiene' flicks, notorious XXX rated films that went too far ('Waterpower', starring Jamie Gillis), Grindhouse cinemas in San Francisco, New York and Seattle through the ages, the various Mondo films and 'Faces of Death' series, snuff and fetish videos, even the Grateful Dead movie - Ok, here's where the bullet makes as many trajectory turns as those that killed President Kennedy, but it's a fascinating read nonetheless.

The casual reader and admirer of art or grind flicks will find little of obvious interest, as there are no reviews, recommendations or pictures, and doesn't make for good bathroom reading - the subject matter is taken quite seriously and is written somewhat like those doing a doctorate or thesis on these topics, but some are less lofty and lighter in tone. For those seeking to plumb the oblique strategies and obscure angles of two of the most notable and controversial forms of 20th century cinema, this is a much welcomed relief from the aisles of more-of-the-same film books on these subjects most of us have already read too many of through the years, and is a breath of fresh air even though the altitude of this oxygen gets a bit thin at times, making breathing a bit difficult. It's like climbing Everest. (Also of interest is the companion book, 'Cinema Inferno', which I just received but haven't read yet, but I'm expecting the same level of high standard). The only drawback is the incredibly hefty pricetag, but all knowledge comes at a cost... 5 stars for its strength, uniqueness and intelligent contextual framework.

Historical Dictionary of Algeria (Historical Dictionaries of Africa), by Phillip C. Naylor

Algeria’s strategic regional and global importance continues to grow. Its hydrocarbon wealth, namely natural gas and oil, is impressive and its receipts are crucial to the national economy. The European Union is a particularly valued hydrocarbon importer and overall commercial partner. The bilateral relationship with France remains problematic and paradoxical. Algeria has demanded an apology for the imposition of colonialism; but it also recognizes the importance of France economically, politically, and militarily, e.g., the unrest in the Sahel (notably Mali). Furthermore, Algeria continues to recover from its recent, tragic civil strife characterized by terrorism and extremism. Its uncertain future, given its ageing leadership, rentier economy, and frustrated youth, is a critical concern.

This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Algeria covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Algeria.

Review
Naylor delivers a concise, informative resource that updates earlier editions and provides information critical for students, scholars, and general readers researching Algeria. Despite their proximity to Europe, the countries of North Africa are not well known. Algeria was a major player in Africa's liberation from colonial rule, setting an example for decolonizing African nations in the 1960s. With its high literacy rate and economic growth, Algeria has become a place of great interest to scholars and students alike. Released in the wake of events referred to as the ‘Arab Spring,’ Naylor's revision comes at an opportune time, since Algeria is once again a beacon of stability and economic success. The dictionary follows the publisher's typical format with a time line for quick reference of dates and events. An introductory essay provides the detailed description of sequences of events featured in the compilation. Hundreds of alphabetically arranged, cross-referenced entries describe important people, places, issues, and events in the nation's history, covering politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture; the bibliography is likewise arranged under broad subjects. Coverage spans every era, from the earliest human settlements to the present, highlighting such developments as French colonization, the growth of nationalism, and the national war of liberation. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers; general readers. (CHOICE)

About the Author
Phillip C. Naylor is professor of history at Marquette University. Besides his work on two previous editions of the Historical Dictionary of Algeria, he has authored France and Algeria: A History of Decolonization and Transformation and North Africa: A History from Antiquity to the Present.

Historical Dictionary of Naval Intelligence (Historical Dictionaries of Intelligence and Counterintelligence), by Nigel West

Naval intelligence is one of the most vital, and sometimes decisive, forms of intelligence. Over the centuries, and with particular velocity over recent decades, the techniques of detecting and destroying military (and commercial) shipping have improved, leapfrogging the equally frantic race to keep ahead of them and safeguard the huge investments involved. Today the new challenges range from an increasingly aggressive strategy adopted by Pyongyang's submarine fleet and the exclusion of illegal immigrants heading for Australia and southern Europe to the capture of cocaine-laded submarines in the Caribbean and the interdiction of Somali pirates off the Gulf of Aden. Any accurate assessment of the comparative threat these activities pose is just as dependent on good intelligence today as it was to Admiral Lord Nelson in the days of sail.

The Historical Dictionary of Naval Intelligence relates the long and fascinating history of naval intelligence through a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on the organizations, operations, and events that made Naval intelligence what it is today.

This historical dictionary is hence of immense value; its importance cannot be overstated. The dictionary is most comprehensive and covers many topics with which I was unaware, on U.S., British, and German naval intelligence. . .An excellent bibliography on naval intelligence is offered. . .This is the first dictionary devoted solely to naval intelligence. . .The historical dictionary covers subjects not covered anywhere else and is not redundant with any other reference sources. . .The historical dictionary is a most interesting read of a very important and timely subject. It identifies numerous items on naval intelligence. (American Intelligence Journal)

Not a very big book - only about 100 pages and the information is not really up-to-date. Not really worth the effort.

Phoning it in...
By Thomas J. Dougherty
Riddled with mistakes, to the point of being totally useless. As just some examples, it lists under "Winterwind" that the USS Halibut deployed mini subs and could sit on the ocean floor at 20,000 ft. Halibut's test depth was 900 feet, and it would be destroyed by pressure long before 20,000 feet. In fact, Halibut had a saturation diving chamber on its stern to deploy divers (down to 600-700 feet), and could deploy small ROVs to greater depths. Also listed is Project Jennifer, which is in fact correctly identified as Azorian, not Jennifer. It did not occur in 1973, as listed in the chronology table; the recovery effort was in July-August 1974. The author thanks Norman Polmar up front but apparently never read Norman's book on Project Azorian. The CIA A-12 program, forerunner of the USAF SR-71 is not listed. MIRVs are Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles, which can be deployed to different targets, not Multiple Rentry Vehicles. Those were termed MRVs, came down on the same target and were on the Polaris A-3 missile. Doesn't give you much confidence in the rest of the material….

The A to Z of the Gulf Arab States (The A to Z Guide Series), by Malcolm C. Peck

The A to Z of the Gulf Arab States comes at a time when the world's attention is riveted on the Middle East. The small states covered in this volume―Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)―possess about 20 percent of the world's total oil reserves. Beyond the strategic and economic importance conferred upon them by their vast oil reserves, the Gulf Arab states are worthy of attention for the inherent interest of their history and culture. No area of the world has yielded more revealing and exciting archaeological finds in the past few decades than these states. Investigations have brought to light extensive evidence of an important culture as old as Egypt of the Pharaohs or ancient Babylon, which was virtually unknown previously except through rare references in the records of other civilizations.

The A to Z of the Gulf Arab States is a paperback reprint of the Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States. This edition covers the history of the five countries through a chronology broken down by country, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, and events of each country. Everything from the Abbasids to Zubarah is covered in this essential reference on this increasingly important region of the world.
