An Excellent Reference for Every Intelligence Analyst

Hank Prunckun has written an outstanding reference that will certainly be of interest and value to any intelligence analyst. While having some of the format of a textbook, the "Handbook of Scientific Methods of Inquiry for Intelligence Analysis" is also easily read as a general reference.

The book teaches data collection techniques such as brainstorming, the 6-3-5 method, devil's advocate, mind mapping, and affinity diagrams. We also are provided with clear explanations of basic statistical analyses such as univariate analysis, calculating percent of change, per capita calculations, chi-square, and scatter plots. Advanced analytic techniques introduce SWOT, PEST, and Pareto analysis. And, of course the standard techniques of association matrix, link analysis, and timelines are covered.

If you are new to intelligence analysis this book will introduce you to a wide array of analytical techniques. If you are a seasoned intelligence analyst with many years of experience you will probably still find a few new ideas and ways to apply analytic techniques.

I enjoyed reading the "Handbook of Scientific Methods of Inquiry for Intelligence Analysis" and continue to use it to learn and develop new analytic techniques. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in intelligence analysis.

In compiling this useful research tool, Davis (Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) draws on a deep knowledge of jazz. The 1,500-plus entries include important musicians, terms, places, and events. While terms such as "Blues" and "Bebop" are afforded short entries, "Jazz" does not appear in the dictionary proper. Instead, Davis provides a brief but informative introductory essay outlining the origins and history of jazz. Typical entries are short, highlighting careers of various figures, discussing the importance of places and events, and offering general descriptions of concepts. Longer entries, such as "Armstrong, Louis," can run several paragraphs, detailing performances, contributions, and influence. Content spans the gamut of jazz from its early influences in blues and popular entertainment to its contemporary manifestations. The work commences with a chronology starting with jazz's vaudeville roots in 1881 and ending with milestones through 2011. Davis caps off the dictionary with a short bibliographic essay and a useful bibliography arranged by subgenres and artists, including general works. Franco Alfano: Transcending Turandot is the first fully documented biography in any language of Italy's last verismo composer, Franco Alfano (1875-1954), the composer chosen to complete Giacomo Puccini's swansong, Turandot, in 1924. Alfano remains one of the most undervalued composers, despite arguably representing the best of Puccini's contemporaries. His ability and prowess and his intimate friendship with Puccini, led to his selection for Turandot's completion: a daunting, enervating, and ultimately thankless task, which nearly robbed him of sight. This biography finally sheds light on Alfano's view of the events, as opposed to the all-too customary Toscanini/Puccini perspective, thereby revealing a largely unknown facet of one of the most important operatic works of the 20th-century. Konrad Dryden, a friend of the composer's late daughter, Nina Alfano, sets out to unravel and organize the facts of Alfano's life, offering a chronological presentation of the composer's vita as well as an examination of his major operas and their literary origins, providing the most complete portrait of the composer to date. Based on unpublished correspondence from international archives freshly translated by Dryden, the book also sheds light on such colleagues and contemporaries as Puccini, Toscanini, Mary Garden, Edward Johnson, Giordano, Rostand, Mascagni, and Mussolini. A selection of previously unpublished photographs is included, as well as plot synopses of Alfano's operatic works. A foreword by the legendary soprano Magda Olivero-his preferred interpreter and Li_ in the world premiere recording of Turandot-and an appendix listing the composer's opus round out this important reference.

Dryden chronicles the composer's vain attempts to recapture the attention of his publisher, Emil Hertzka of Universal Edition, as well as his unsavory attempts to curry favor with Mussolini. Dryden's chief achievement lies in his advocacy of a neglected compose, one who "arguably represents the best of Italy's post-Puccini contemporaries." (Opera News)

Opera biography

Another fine book by Konrad Dryden. However, I look forward to the day when all these scholarly well researched books are e-published so you can click on a note and read it without extra fingers stuck in the back or the end of a chapter. Also so that extracts of the musical score can be shown, and, with earphones, extracts heard. Also comprehensive sources of musical scores and recordings.And again have your e-mail address as "purchaser", or perhaps "subscriber" so that new research can be forwarded to you. I hope we have this sort of publication soon. The technology is certainly here.
