Larson (former president, Wartburg Theological Seminary; From Word and Sacrament), and Mark W. Oldenburg (Lutheran Theological Seminary) cover topics, figures, and events important to Lutheranism from its founding to the present day. Prefacing the dictionary entries are a comprehensive chronology that details the beginning of Christian communities dating from around the time of the death of Jesus Christ through the present day and a mention of the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation in 2017. An introduction clarifies some terminology and discusses the rise and expansion of Lutheranism, the Lutheran identity, and the Lutheran world presence. With a few exceptions, such as the essay on Martin Luther, which runs about two pages, most of the entries are no more than a page or so in length. Each entry has the topic capitalized and bolded, employing in-text bolding for important concepts. The information is concise and provides snapshots of myriad elements important to the faith. An appendix includes a list of Lutheran churches along with their membership statistics. A comprehensive bibliography is also included and is organized according to a variety of topics, including general reference works, history, the life and theology of the founder, significant followers, and Lutheranism and ecumenism. This second edition (1st, CH, Jan'02, 39-2516) is a one-volume reference on the history and theology of Lutheran Christianity worldwide. Written by Gassmann (Theological Faculties in Tartu, Estonia, and more), Oldenburg (Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg), and Larson (formerly, Lutheran Theological Seminary), this work, as part of a larger series, appears in a standard format. Short entries are presented on individuals, groups, topics, and events. Though no bibliographical details appear with specific entries, an extensive English-language bibliography at the end of the work runs to 62 pages. Also offered are current statistics for Lutheran church bodies worldwide. This second edition has an expanded list of entries, with about 75 new pages of material. The update includes more information on significant Lutheran women, leaders, and movements in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as recent developments. One might take issue with the exclusion of certain topics and individuals or with a perceptible editorial slant in some articles, but overall this is a good reference book, especially valuable for its revision. Historical Dictionary of Lutheranism

If the "Truth in Lending" law were applied to book titles the Historical Dictionary of Lutheranism would be beset by litigation. In truth, it should have been entitled the Revisionist Dictionary of Liberal Lutheranism. Authors Günther Gassmann, et al., have assiduously avoided making entries for terms that would have profoundly embarrassed liberal Lutherans by exposing how little they retain of true Lutheranism. For example, no entries were made for quia subscription, quatanus subscription, cardinal principles or cardinal doctrine. The historic cardinal principles (Three Principles of the Reformation) appear under the "faith" entry, p. 114, mislabeled as "slogans" with sola scriptura (Scripture alone) missing. History remembers sola scriptura as the reason behind the Ninety-Five Theses, Martin Luther's disputation challenge that is widely recognized as having launched the Reformation. The authors seem to wish to prove beyond all doubt that they are crypto-Calvinists by naming the Swiss Reformed theologian Karl Barth in connection with the Barmen Declaration but referring to Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Niemöller merely as "two Lutheran theologians," p. 35. For reasons that defy reason they excluded mentioning Albrecht Dürer while Lucas Cranach the Elder was included. Also missing are notables such as Hermann Sasse, Nicolaus Hunnius, Johann Andreas Quenstedt, David Chytraeus and Hallgrim Petursson. Even if the unbalanced and highly inflammatory comments are overlooked this book is far less comprehensive than one expects for something in this price range.

Palmer avoids catering to one audience or another, eschewing both confusing snobbery and extraneous bloat and filling the entries with cross-references for possibly unfamiliar art terms and artists from the period....An informative introduction and chronology, along with a well-organized, extensive bibliography. BOTTOM LINE Although Palmer’s Historical Dictionary is surprisingly short and, for a reference book, inexpensive, it is also comprehensive, well written, and easy to read. Romantic art and architecture departed significantly from their predecessor movement, the neoclassical. Events such as the American and French Revolutions and the rise and fall of Napoléon are among the factors that gave rise to a wide variety of movements and styles. These include the Gothic revival, classical revival, Orientalism, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as well as regional movements such as the Hudson River school of landscape painting in the U.S. and the German Nazarene movement. This volume provides a succinct overview on Romanticism while at the same time giving access to more topic-specific sources for further study. Entries cover art movements, styles, and aesthetic philosophies, but most deal with artists—painters, printmakers, sculptors, and architects. Focus is on the nineteenth century, although some articles treat eighteenth-century precursors, and others deal with offshoots in the early years of the twentieth, such as the Arts and Crafts movement. A detailed chronology and informative introduction precede the body of the work. Fourteen black-and-white reproductions are well placed with the articles that apply to them....The bibliography is substantive enough to require a table of contents and provides citations to print resources on Romanticism generally, the specific styles within the movement, and specific artists. Yet just about all the information we have about him is contained in documents that were written some time after his death by authors who regarded him as more than a Jewish peasant turned religious teacher. Harrington, a noted biblical scholar, takes on the daunting task of reconstructing the life and teachings of Jesus in some 400 brief entries. The people, places, and events in Jesus’ life are covered in entries such as Galilee, Mary Magdalene, and Trial of Jesus. Some scholars view the parables of Jesus as presenting his actual teachings and possibly his very own words, so many (e.g., Good Samaritan, parable of the) are included. Such topics as Humor, Money, and Table fellowship further describe Jesus’ teachings and the manner in which he taught. Although the dictionary is not intended as an apologetic work, theological topics such as Incarnation, Logos, and Son of Man are mentioned in the source documents so therefore merit inclusion. One of the most interesting entries and also one of the longest is Jewish interpretations of Jesus, wherein Jewish perspectives over the centuries are introduced. A concise introductory essay gives an overview of “the major topics pertaining to Jesus as a historical figure,” and the dictionary concludes with a bibliography of recommended works.
