the indispensable reference -- in paperback
By Eric A. Isaacson
This paperback version of Rev. Mark Harris's book published in hardcover as the Historical Dictionary of Unitarian Universalism (Historical Dictionaries of Religions, Philosophies and Movements), is a truly indispensable reference for anyone interested in the history of Unitarians, Universalists, and Unitarian Universalists -- at a fraction of the hardcover's price.

Rev. Harris is a parish minister serving one of America's oldest congregations, the First Parish of Watertown, Massachusetts, which traces its history to 1630. He also is a diligent and careful historical scholar.

His book is organized alphabetically, comprising biographical entries for notable Unitarians and Universalists, as well entries for important organizations and institutions that have played a role in the denominations' historical development.

It opens with an entry on the Rev. Francis Ellingwood Abbot, who served the Dover, New Hampshire, Society of Unitarian Christians - until New Hampshire's courts ruled him insufficiently "Christian." John and Abigail Adams are here too. So is John Quincy Adams.

Rev. Abner Kneeland is here too, who served as a Universalist minister before he was prosecuted by the State of Massachusetts, convicted, and imprisoned - for blasphemy.

All round, I think this is the best reference in print for quick references on Unitarian and Universalist biography.

Critical institutions, organizations, and events are covered too. The entry on Harvard College, for example, describes the controversy surrounding the Henry Ware's appointment to the Hollister Divinity Chair in 1805, which divided Congregationalism and contributed to the formation of the Unitarian denomination.

Great overview
By Kindle Customer
I just finished a very favorable review of this author's "Introduction to Logic" book. While I praised it for review and learning of logic, this one is a superb background and reference work (something hard to find in this field). It's great overall, but particularly helpful in the symbolic logic area.

By Eclectic Hermit
I chose this rating mainly because there are no other books that compare to a dictionary for Schopenhauer's terms and concepts. It is written for me in a less than friendly way. I struggle to understand all the academic jargon. It is my opinion that this book is not the A to Z, as it leaves out a large chunk of terms. It does provide a scattered outline of Schopenhauer's works.

Out of the Shadows: Expanding the Canon of Classic Film Noir, by Gene D. Phillips

Film noir was a cycle in American cinema which first came into prominence during World War II, peaked in the 1950s, and began to taper off as a definable trend by 1960. Over the years, a group of films from the period emerged as noir standards, beginning with Stranger on the Third Floor in 1940. However, since film noir is too wide-ranging, it cannot be kept within the narrow limits of the official canon that has been established by film historians. Consequently, several neglected movies made during the classic noir period need to be re-evaluated as noir films.

In Out of the Shadows: Expanding the Canon of Classic Film Noir, Gene Phillips provides an in-depth examination of several key noir films, including acknowledged masterpieces like Laura, The Maltese Falcon, Sunset Boulevard, and Touch of Evil, as well as films not often associated with film noir like Spellbound, A Double Life, and Anatomy of a Murder. Phillips also examines overlooked or underappreciated films such as Song of the Thin Man, The Glass Key, Ministry of Fear, and Act of Violence. Also considered in this reevaluation are significant neo-noir films, among them Chinatown, Hammett, L.A. Confidential, and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

In his analyses, Phillips draws upon a number of sources, including personal interviews with directors and others connected with their productions, screenplays, and evaluations of other commentators. Out of the Shadows explores not only the most celebrated noir films but offers new insight into underrated films that deserve reconsideration. Of interest to film historians and scholars, this volume will also appeal to anyone who wants a better understanding of the works that represent this unique cycle in American filmmaking.

From Booklist
Film historian and biographer Phillips suggests that the accepted film noir canon is perhaps too narrowly defined. Noir, as applied by most film historians, excludes some very worthy films, such as Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train and Fritz Lang’s Ministry of Fear, as well as more modern offerings such as Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley. Of Ministry of Fear, for example, Phillips suggests that it is not merely a minor Lang movie; it is an important and overlooked noir film. And, as with all the films discussed, he goes into a good amount of detail, exploring the movie’s themes, characters, and dialogue and showing how each belongs in the noir canon. The book apparently had a long gestation period; it draws on interviews with several directors who have been dead for decades—Lang, Cukor, Wilder, Hitchcock, and Kubrick (whose own 1956 film, The Killing, was, Phillips says, unappreciated in its time). Phillips isn’t suggesting a major overhaul of the genre, but he is saying that it’s time we look again at film noir with fresh eyes. A valuable addition to any film-book library. --David Pitt

Review
Some Like It Wilder: The Life and Controversial Films of Billy Wilder) writes that key noir films have been neglected or overlooked, notably Otto Preminger’s courtroom drama Anatomy of a Murder and Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound. He examines elements that define a noir film and the role of expatriate directors like Fritz Lang and Billy Wilder, who fled Hitler’s Europe but brought their dark visions with them. Essays cover major themes, give little-known facts about the making of the films, and offer critical insights. Although film noir mostly petered out in the 1950s, Phillips also describes more recent neonoir classics, including Body Heat, L.A. Confidential, and Chinatown. Solid research and extensive cast and director interviews....Consistently readable and engaging, it will still have strong appeal for film noir fans. (Library Journal)

Although one can find numerous books on the topic of film noir and treatments of seemingly every possible angle on the subject, Phillips somehow manages to add one more dimension to the study of the genre. He does so by "expanding the canon" of film noir to include films often overlooked, noting the importance and significance of films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder, and Orson Welles's The Stranger to the cycle of films produced during the film noir era. In a thoughtful, jargon-free style, the author provides concise histories, synopses, and analyses of 23 films, combining personal interviews with primary and secondary research. Moreover, he includes information about authors of hard-boiled fiction, such as Dashiell Hammett, James Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Patricia Highsmith, continually connecting film noir to its literary roots. Phillips's breezy, conversational style makes for quick reading and easy accessibility to a topic often convoluted. For those interested in a historical and literary perspective on film noir, this volume fulfills the requirement and will not disappoint. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; general readers. (CHOICE)

The book is an easy read and it is the analysis of two juxtaposing films in each chapter that makes the book interesting. . . .[It] does make a good . . . academic study of the genre. (Filmwerk)

Repetitive chapters get repetitive
By Booky Nights
Repetitive; the thesis is pretty simplistic--many films use noir techniques and tropes--and the chapters all seem to fall into a too-similar pattern as the author summarizes movies and picks out this and that element that makes them noir-ish if not absolutely noir. It seems fairly superficial.

Great history, but too much plot
By Neil The Unreel
If you are a fan of Film Noir, than this book is a must read. Given the must-read seal, I also have to say, that Father Gene Phillips’ style of writing and use of incorporating himself into the book is a huge distraction. The history of Noir and the contribution the author, Dashiell Hammett makes is well documented by Phillips. The author makes a great point of showing how the history of mystery writing differs from England to America. Hammett was the author who made the turning point with his Hemingway-like terse style in magazines first and later in books. Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain would also contribute to the literary foundation for Noir. Phillips researches and writes well in the first few chapters of the book with the history of Noir film makers being persecuted out of Germany and Austria by the rise of the Nazis. Filmmakers like Billy Wilder, Fritz Lang, and Robert Siodmak bring their style from Germany to America. Where Phillips falls short of delivering a great book is that he tells the plot of each film he reviews. It becomes cumbersome at times with his explanation and if you saw the film, totally unnecessary. I can overlook and read past most of the descriptions of the plots, since I have seen most of the films. The one thing I cannot accept is how Phillips plugs himself into too much of the book. “It is told to him by such-and-such,” is a poor way of communicating an interview. He can simply leave that fact out, as it is already inferred. Read the book for the history of Noir and some of the overlooked contributors; don’t read about the plots or how the author interviewed some of the participants.

Historical Dictionary of the Carter Era (Historical Dictionaries of U.S. Politics and Political Eras), by Diane Kaufman, Scott Kaufman

James Earl Carter, Jr. – better known as Jimmy Carter – was not the greatest or most popular president of the United States but he did accomplish quite a lot in the fields of civil rights, energy and foreign policy during his term from 1977 to 1981. However, the economy fared badly and he lost face in his dealings with Iran. So when he left after one term, he was not greatly missed… or so it seemed. For, after the presidency, he made an amazing comeback as a diplomat and trouble-shooter in international crises, becoming an amazing ex-president. And even the earlier views of his presidency have been improving… at least he did not get the country into a war.

This rather special trajectory is explained in the Historical Dictionary of the Carter Era, with an obvious focus on his term as president. His run for the presidency and what he did during his term in office is traced carefully by the chronology. The introduction takes a longer view and also puts events in a broader context. Then the dictionary section, with hundreds of detailed and cross-referenced entries, tells us more about his policy in various fields but also how America changed culturally and socially during this period. The extensive bibliography points toward further information, although this book is certainly a good starting point and also a place to refresh one’s memory.

From Booklist
Approximately 400 cross-referenced entries chronicle the one-term presidency of Jimmy Carter, covering people, politics, society, and the culture of the U.S. during the late 1970s. An introductory essay provides concise yearly summaries of each of his four years in office, including information on the energy crisis in 1977 and the Iran hostage crisis of 1979–80. A chronology extends from December 12, 1974 (the announcement of his candidacy), to January 21, 1981, when he was sent to Germany to greet the embassy hostages on their release after 444 days of captivity. A substantial bibliography completes the work. Recommended for school, academic, and public libraries. --Kaye Talley

Independent scholar/archivist D. Kaufman and S. Kaufman are the editors of this latest volume in the "Historical Dictionaries of U.S. Politics and Political Eras" series. This reference book is a dictionary with all of the expected sections, including illustrations, a chronology of the Carter presidency, an introductory essay, appendixes, and a bibliographic essay. The single thing that makes this a unique volume is that it deals with the Carter era in general rather than focusing solely on politics. Readers will find material on literature, music, and world events that ties into the period from 1977 to 1981. Entries are organized in alphabetical order and include cross-references. Most items are brief, with the exception of the entry on Jimmy Carter, which is five pages long. One distinctive feature of the entries is that the names of major players and events appear in boldface in the text and refer to other dictionary entries. This single volume would be a great addition to a school or public library because it places people and events into a chronological historical context. Summing Up: Recommended. (CHOICE)

American Presidents are a never-ending source of fascination and research. They set the tone for the country and the world during their tenures and American history are often discussed around presidential terms. In the newest addition to their Historical Dictionaries of U.S. Politics and Political Eras series, Scarecrow Press has tackled the four years of Jimmy Carter's presidency. Similar to their other Historical Dictionaries, this one aims to provide short entries on more subjects rather than treating any single idea or item in depth. But the coverage of their entries is broad, reaching from events that occurred during his presidency (e.g., Love Canal) to the people central to it (e.g., Ayatollah Khomeini, Tip O'Neill) to more broad entries on issues (e.g., Abortion, Environment). But the short alphabetic entries are only about half of the book. The rest is taken up by very valuable bibliography of data and primary source material. A well-organized introductory essay, a chronology of his presidency, a list of all presidential vetoes, all State of the Union addresses, approval ratings for each month he was in office, and a very thorough bibliography all make this dictionary more valuable than it would be otherwise. Libraries supporting high school and undergraduate students who research American history and politics would be well served adding this to their collection if they are looking to provide basic context for the Carter presidency. (American Reference Books Annual)

Written by a history professor at Francis Marion University and a librarian this book offers a good overview of American life during the Carter presidency. . . .[T]his title serves as a helpful resource for anyone interested in learning more about this president and the era in which he served. . . .This source is recommended for public libraries and academic libraries that support the study of American culture, American history, and political science. The A to Z of American Radio Soap Operas (The A to Z Guide Series), by Jim Cox

The period from 1925 to 1960 was the heyday of the American Radio Soap Opera. In addition to being part of popular culture, the soap opera had important commercial aspects as well that were not only related to their production, but also to the desperate need to sell products or perish. Both sides of this story are traced in this comprehensive compendium.

The dictionary section, made up of more than 500 cross-referenced entries, provides brief vignettes of the more popular and also less well-known "soaps," among them Back Stage Wife, Our Gal Sunday, Pepper Young's Family and The Guiding Light. Other entries evoke those who brought these programs to life: the actors, announcers, scriptwriters, networks, and even the sponsors. Nor are the basic themes, the stock characters and the gimmick, forgotten. The book's introduction defines the soap opera, examines the span of the radio serial, reviews its origins and its demise, and focuses on the character types that made up its denizens. The chronology outlines the period and the bibliography offers further reading. Together, these elements make a comprehensive reference work that researchers will find invaluable long into the future.

Historical Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Classical Music (Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts), by Nicole V. Gagn&e

In the last decade of the 19th century, modernist sensibilities reached a critical mass and emerged more frequently in music as composers began employing dissonance, polyrhythm, atonality, and densities. Conversely, many 20th-century composers eschewed modernist devices and wrote accessible works in a tonal idiom, which drew chiefly on classical, romantic, and folk models. Then the postmodern sensibility followed, with its enthusiasm for the unprecedented availability of virtually every type of music, and it engendered numerous sub-groups, including multiculturalism, minimalism, multimedia, and free improvisation.

Historical Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Classical Music focuses on modernist and postmodern classical music worldwide from 1890 to the present. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, with more than 60 entries explaining the methods, styles, and acoustic and electronic media peculiar to new music, and over 350 entries giving essential information on the lives and work of the people who have composed and performed that music. Those entries also include pop, jazz, and rock composer/musicians whose work either overlaps the realm of classical music or else is so radical within its own field that it merits discussion in this context. This book is a must for anyone, musician or non-musician, student or professional, who seeks to research and learn more about any significant aspect of modern and contemporary classical music worldwide.

Review
Composer Gagné has been writing on the topic of modern and contemporary classical music for about three decades. Her dictionary focuses on composers of and, occasionally, the musicians performing, concert music during the 19th and 20th centuries. It consists primarily of an alphabetical listing of almost 400 people and topics and lacks a table of contents that would alert readers to other, smaller sections. These include a key to acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, and a useful introduction that defines modern and contemporary classical music and describes “how techniques and technology interacted with the art."... The bibliography begins with a table of contents and an introduction that suggests several seminal books on broad topics, essential writings by composers, and books about composers and compositional analysis. It is divided into sections by composer and by format (e.g., books, journals, and websites about individual composers, multiple composers, and organizations). BOTTOM LINE This dictionary will be an excellent and useful addition to high school and college libraries as well as to the collections of modern classical music aficionados. (Library Journal)

When most people think of classical music, they summon up images of tinkly baroque or sweeping Romantic music. Relatively few instinctively go for the dissonance, polyrhythm, and atonality of the modernist movement, still fewer for the minimalism, multimedia, and free improvisation movements that are hallmarks of postmodernism. The Historical Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Classical Music focuses on these movements worldwide, from 1890 to the present. Included are pop, jazz, and rock composers and musicians whose work overlaps classical music or is radical enough in its own field to merit inclusion. The lengthy introductory essay provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, covering not just the movements, composers, and musicians but methods, styles, and media peculiar to modern and contemporary music. A detailed chronology sets the stage, beginning in 1890 with Satie and Debussy and ending in 2010 with Tyranny’s Scriabin’s Chord—surely a broad swath—encompassing works by Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, and the Beatles. The more than 400 alphabetically organized entries are brief but informative, running from a paragraph for lesser-known composers (e.g., Ursula Oppens) to two pages for movements (e.g., Postmodernism). The writing style is smooth and engaging, informative without being belabored. Cross-references are noted within entries by bold type, and see also references end the entries. The organizational structure and cross-referencing work well in lieu of an index. A long bibliography is extensive enough to need its own table of contents and is organized by categories covering print works of general interest, histories, individual and multiple composers, and interviews. There are separate sections for journals and reviews as well as websites. Virtually alone in its field, where many competing works are more specialized or narrowly focused, the Historical Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Music provides a good starting point for those seeking to understand a somewhat esoteric field. A sound purchase for large public and academic libraries. (Booklist)

Primarily biographical, this concise dictionary for music of the 20th and early 21st centuries describes 350 composers and performers; the author contributes 400 dictionary entries, many of which present styles or instruments. Composers known at the turn of the 20th century are covered only if their music and ideas were futuristic; also included are composers of jazz and popular songs who overlapped into concert music (e.g., Ornette Coleman). Gagné (independent scholar) presents a wide array of international musicians, including those that are exclusively performers (orchestras, singers, instrumentalists). A chronology from 1890 to 2010 lists major works. The introduction presents a concise history of modern music, and identifies several composers and titles of the various styles (harmonic, rhythmic, timbral) that became 20th-century music. This dictionary introduces many terms not present in previous works, such as "Extended Performance Techniques." It also divides terms into multiple entries with more details; e.g., "Aleatory" music is supplemented by "Chance," "Open Form," "Indeterminacy," and "Elastic Form." Extensive bibliographies conclude the dictionary. Boldface font for references helps users relate various composers to each other, their styles, and their genres. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates. (CHOICE)

This book is a handy reference tool for students and researchers who need basic information about modern and contemporary classical music and musicians, both famous and obscure....Gagné’s Historical Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Classical Music is recommended for research libraries or libraries that serve ambitious undergraduates. It is an extensive, easy-to-use dictionary that provides quick reference to numerous topics and can serve as a spring- board for further investigation. (Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association)

The dictionary provides basic information about each topic (e.g., methods, styles, and techniques), with bolded cross-references in each entry. The emphasis on biographical fact, not music criticism, provides in a nutshell the essence of the contribution of the composer to the development of twentieth-century music. The entries do not include a complete work list, rather just those works that the compiler deemed the most representative, important, or well-known. Some entries are also followed by a list of cross-references. The 57-page bibliography is comprehensive and well organized; it is particularly outstanding in the number and quality of print and Web resources for individual composers. The dictionary is preceded by an introduction that sets the framework for the historical development of the period and by a useful chronology, which even includes occasionally premiere dates for the works tracked. The work is commendable for its coverage of women, minority, and international figures as well as the inclusion of performers in the related fields of jazz, pop, and rock, like Duke Ellington and the Beatles, whose influence impacted the realm of classical music. This dictionary is an appropriate addition to both public and academic music reference collections as an introduction to the composers and movements for the general public and undergraduates as well as a jumping-off resource for further investigation. (American Reference Books Annual)

Such a well-produced and authoritative book is the newly-published Historical Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Classical Music by Nicole Gagné from Scarecrow Press. It is indeed far more than an excellent dictionary of modern composers and music – although it is those too. It amounts to a perceptive and ultimately very creative assessment not only of how "classical" music (with all its many influences) has developed since the 1890's; of who has played which roles; where have been the developments, major and minor; in which contexts; but – significantly also – why music has developed as it has. How it has happened that music has made the progress which it has; how the slices of these changes fit and clash, bend and sprint. (Classical Net)
