It opens up the discussion of young-adult racial and ethnic identity in literature to recognize—and focus on—those whose heritage straddles boundaries. In this book teachers will find new tools to approach race, ethnicity, and family heritage in literature and in the classroom. This book also helps librarians find new criteria with which to evaluate young adult fiction and nonfiction with mixed-heritage characters.

Outstanding Review of Literature and Culture!

Nancy Thalia Reynolds is thorough! Whatever writing she takes on -- fiction, travel, cultural phenomenon -- you can count on a deeply considered and accurately constructed book. MIXED HERITAGE IN YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE takes on real issues for real characters, not just multiculturalism as an abstraction. One of my favorite middle-grade fiction authors, Karen Hesse, is best known for her Newberry-award-winning, OUT OF THE DUST. Reynolds draws our attention to another of her books written in verse, ALEUTIAN SPARROW(2003) and as Reynolds visits the pages of this book, I was so taken in by the recounting of the Aleut story after World War II that I wanted to find and read the book, not to kids, but myself.

Over and over again, Reynolds reminds us of the importance of literature's role in going deeply into the emotional lives of characters, of fettering out the unspeakable. As she dwells on the work of Jean Davies Okimoto, she asks essential questions for our American culture: "When you are adopted, which is your true culture? Your true ethnic heritage?"

This is a must-read book for teachers, teachers, college students, thousands working with multicultural youth and indeed, book clubs. Reynolds not only has read hundreds of books with the skill of an editor's mind, but she sends this back to us and says, take this on, don't be afraid to talk about diversity and its evolving roots!

About the Author
Pamela R. Stern is an adjunct professor of anthropology at Simon Fraser University in Canada. She has been studying the Inuit for three decades already and, during this time, she has visited many Inuit communities in Alaska, Canada and Greenland. Her own research is rather varied ranging from adolescent life, employment and resource development to citizenship. It has resulted in numerous articles and several books, the most recent being Daily Life of the Inuit.

Colin Buchanan was ordained a deacon in 1961, elected to the House of Bishops in 1990, and until 2004 he was the Bishop of Woolwich. These are just a few of the major signposts in a career that has spanned nearly five decades and included work as a pastor and teacher as well as a participant in major Anglican and ecumenical commissions and conferences.
