Babies in the Library!, by Jane Marino

Eclectic library reading programs for young children have blossomed across the nation over the last decade, encouraging in toddlers a fondness for the library and an excitement for the caches of books to be found there. Likewise, in an effort to promote a love of language in babies as young as three months old, scores of early childhood initiatives are beginning to sprout as well. Aimed at children's librarians and other professionals who work with very young children, this librarian-tested sourcebook provides complete programs that spotlight the value and necessity of singing, speaking, and reading to babies in their earliest months. Ten ready-to-use programs are divided for their intended audience: five for 'pre-walkers' and five for walkers. Marino combines rhymes involving body movement, songs, fingerplays, circle games, and books in ways that teach interaction skills with young children and help to enrich their language and enhance their listening capabilities. Several of the rhymes are repeated in a take-home section to aid librarians and others in charge of children's programs to present parents and caregivers with the tools they need to use rhymes and activities whenever and wherever they want. A helpful bibliography lists the best picture books, programming books, rhyme collections, and numerous recordings that are suitable for very young children. The captivating activities in Babies in the Library! will delight the youngest library users while making it easy for librarians to create programs for this important and growing segment of the library population.

From School Library Journal
Marino presents clear and convincing arguments for holding library programs specifically geared toward babies. Organizing and presenting her ideas in a thoughtful and philosophical manner, she addresses many relevant topics: making babies feel comfortable in the library, creating programs for prewalkers and walkers, handling registration, and offering suggestions for planning and executing programs. She also includes various activities that introduce books, rhymes, puppets, and other tools that enhance language skills. This book resembles the author's Mother Goose Time: Library Programs for Babies and Their Caregivers (H.W. Wilson, 1992) in format but focuses more on the stages of baby development. In both the earlier text and this one, Marino includes a wealth of fingerplays, which are grouped by everyday experiences such as tub and changing rhymes, food rhymes, and lullabies. In the earlier text, Marino's lists of recommended books were broken into categories suchas display books, picture-book titles for Mother Goose time, and resource books. Here, the author includes a more in-depth and categorized list of books, recordings, videos, and other sources useful to librarians and parents. Librarians will welcome this resource from a veteran of children's librarianship, and a valued expert in the field.

From Booklist
Marino has put together a wonderful handbook for children’s librarians who want to do programming for their youngest patrons, those she refers to as “prewalkers” and “walkers.” She has provided five programs for each group, with rhymes, songs, and books. In some cases the words for the songs and rhymes are original; others she has adapted. She gives suggestions and rationales for use, along with directions for movement. The books listed include bibliographic information and annotations. One chapter suggests rhymes for parents and caregivers to use at home, and another suggests rhymes to use with puppets. A list of resources includes rhyme and song collections, picture and board books, music recordings, videos, professional books, and early childhood literacy programs and organizations. This is a book that will not be far from the librarian’s side, both for the programs and Marino’s excellent advice. --Shelley Glantz

Review
Jane Marino...provides some tried and tested activities for use with babies. It is worth considering purchasing this inexpensive book for the advice on how to start a Babies in the Library program, and for the ready-assembled collection of rhymes. (Orana)

Children's Librarians: You Need to Do Baby Laptimes & this book will help!
By SKP
I am an adult Reference Librarian, but as a former Children's Librarian, I was recently assigned to work part of the time in the Children's Department. I have conducted gads and gads of preschool storytimes, toddler times, and programs for school age children over a period of 19 years. But after the summer program ended, we began to see a need in our area for a Baby Lapsit program. We'd had on surge of new parents looking for things to do with Baby, and some of them trying to pass their 3- month-olds as Toddlers and attending programs for a different preschool age group.

Not having taken the plunge into programming for infants and their caregivers before, I felt the need for research. I read everything I could about this type of programming in books and on the Internet, but even working in a library, I didn't have easy access to the title BABIES IN THE LIBRARY by Jane Marino that I ran across online. So I bought the book from Amazon, and I am so thankful I did! It really jump-started my program. I have led 6 weeks of Baby Laptimes as of the time of this writing, and the book has more than paid for itself in the rewards I get from working with cooing, smiling babies and happy mommies every week.

The book tells how to get started, and it even has some sample programs, along with rhymes that are age-appropriate. I took a lot of the ideas, combined them with my own style and personality and ideas, and it has resulted in a program that is earning rave reviews! After we got started we had to stop publicizing it, because word of mouth was enough to spread the word like wildfire, and we wanted to try to keep the group smaller than the average storytime audience for the benefit of those attending.

I wish I'd started doing Laptimes a long time ago! Of course, this book wouldn't have been published yet, so maybe it was perfect timing. Lapsits are a great service to our library patrons, and make my job even more fun than it already was. I used other books that I found in my library system, but this book was the most helpful, and it now has a place of honor as a reference on my shelf by my desk.
