Author Conley understands that “any broad assessment of Bush’s legacy” is “intuitively both premature and precarious,” and he delivers a scholarly, well-formed, and unbiased view of the period (1999–2009). The dictionary starts with acronyms and abbreviations followed by a well-detailed chronology as well as a time line of the Iraq War from March 2003 to January 2009. The introduction is exceptional in providing context to help grasp the transformations that occurred during the Bush presidency and the varying views of his potential legacy. The dictionary proper covers key people, concepts, events, trends, legislation, policy, and policy issues. Appropriate to the topic, about 50 percent of the entries are biographical. Entries are concise and easy to read, and the cross-referencing is excellent. About the Author
Richard S. Conley has been teaching at University of Florida since 1998, where he is presently associate professor in political science. He is a recognized authority on the U.S. presidency and executive-legislative relations. He has written numerous articles, book chapters, and several books, including the Historical Dictionary of the Reagan-Bush Era and the Historical Dictionary of the George W. Bush Era.
