About the Author
Dick Weissman is associate professor emeritus in the music and entertainment industry program at the University of Colorado at Denver. A musician, composer, and former member of the folk revival trio The Journeymen, he has authored and edited numerous books about music and the music industry, including Talkin’ ’bout a Revolution: Music and Social Change in America (2010), Understanding the Music Business (2009), and Which Side Are You On? An Inside History of the Folk Music Revival in America (2006).

A book about books about folk music – Opinionated but fun to read.

This is one of two books published this year by Rowman & Littlefield with similar titles. The other (by Ed Komara and Greg Johnson) replaces the word “Folk” with “Blues”. Since the word “folk” in “folk music” has many possibilities, these books are not that different. Dick Weissman, the author of this volume, is a writer and professor (at Univ. of Colorado, Denver) but also a musician. He was along with John Phillips and Scott McKenzie a founder of the 1960s folk group The Journeymen – before Phillips left to found the Mamas and Papas and McKenzie hit the charts with his solo hit “If You Go To San Francisco”. Weisman includes a bunch of “blues” books in his list ( “I Am The Blues: The Story of Willie Dixon”, “Black Pearls : Blues Queens of the 1920s” and “Blues Fell This Morning” among others) though he doesn’t list “Blues” as one of the 14 “chapters” that he uses to divide his 100 recommended titles. (Oh yes, he adds a “Baker’s Dozen” to the list at the end.)

The hardbound volume is 180 pages long with 165 pages devoted to the “reviews” of the books, so each book gets about 1 ½ pages of text. Some are a bit longer; some shorter. Weissman is opinionated as to what he likes and if, like me, you read the reviews in that context; you can understand where he is coming from. I did catch a few grammar errors that apparently slipped through. On page 159 he refers to Clay Eals’ biography of Steve Goodman as an “autobiography”. Goodman died many years before the book was written and Eals used interviews with family and friends plus his own research. This is also one of the reviews where Weissman complains about the size of the book. It is lengthy though with lots of photos. Again, Weissman is entitled to his opinion.

The book does have an Index of names and authors. I looked up Weissman’s own name to see if he included any of his three books (including this 2006 book on the folk revival in America. There is one page reference for him and that page number refers to the first page of the Index! He doesn’t even include his own book (which I liked when I read it) in his “100 Books” list.

So yes, this is a good “buyers’ guide” for folk fans as well as libraries wanting to fill their shelves with more reference books on “folk music”. And with it’s really sturdy binding, it will hold up to much browsing.

Indispensable Guide to Folk Music Literature

This is a book that every folk (and country blues) fan should own. It is the only up to date and fully annotated guide to folk books of all kinds, from history and biography to regional and recording history, musical instruction, photography and beyond. It does not dwell on well-documented figures like Bob Dylan or Joan Baez, but concentrates on lesser known but key figures such as Dave van Ronk, and Hazel Dickens. Good anecdotes from each book are recounted, such as the Lomax's cut of Leadbelly's recording contract.

This deceptively small, single-volume dictionary by Schraufnagel (Northern Illinois Univ.) features over 500 entries that cover broad topics such as the budget, along with more obscure topics, e.g., one-term congressional representative and former Speaker of the House William Pennington. Although some entries are 200-plus words in length, most are relatively short. Entries are supplemented with several extras, including a list of acronyms, a lengthy bibliography organized by topics, a very brief list of Internet resources, and three appendixes. The appendixes include the dates of every congressional session; a list of major congressional players, including minority and majority whips and leaders in the House and Senate; Speakers of the House; Senate presidents/Senate presidents pro tempore; and each of the 27 amendments to the US Constitution. The dictionary includes a 14-page chronology that highlights more than 200 significant moments in the history of the federal legislative branch, from the Constitutional Convention of 1787 through the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act in 2010. With the exception of a list of Internet resources that seems like an afterthought, the supplemental material is quite useful. The entries are concise and well written, and the dictionary as a whole is an excellent resource. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates; general readers. (CHOICE)

Dr. Schraufnagel’s book is a useful addition to the Scarecrow series. It is a small mine of information on two hundred years of Congressional history but kept within a brief compass. (Reference Reviews)

The Historical Dictionary of the U.S. Congress has a handy list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introduction, a dictionary covering 237 pages, several appendixes (Congressional Session Dates, Leaders of Congress, and The Constitutional Amendments), and a bibliography. The chronology reveals the start of Congress in Philadelphia Pennsylvania May 14-September 17, 1787 to current March 21, 2010 the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act. Crucial are the well-written essays in the dictionary on those leading Congress and amendments in addition to the easy-to-read definitions of words associated with Congress. Appendix A, Congressional Session Dates, show the 1st Congress 1789 to the 111th Congress 2010. The times of the chart displays the number of sessions, the beginning date, end date, and days in session. Appendix B, Leaders of Congress, furnishes the Congress number, names, party, and states for House and Senate leaders. Appendix C, The Constitutional Amendments, discusses each of the 27 amendments. The reference is useful for all canvassers of Congress and is a must have for academic, public, and government libraries. (American Reference Books Annual)

In her latest compilation, Schon evaluates 1231 reference books, fiction, and nonfiction, mainly published in the last five years. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author and include a grade level for each book. The majority of the fiction are translations of titles by popular and well-known American authors and classics and award-winning juvenile titles by authors from diverse cultures, genres, times, and languages. Schon also includes a number of original titles by Spanish writers, some of them contemporary, such as Carlos Ruiz ZafÃ³n and Jordi Sierra Fabra, and others from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Underrepresented are works by Mexican, Caribbean, and South American writers as well as materials by Latino writers living in the United States. Not sure what the confusion is..

I'm not sure why the previous reviewer was confused. Here is the first sentence of the book's description, above:

"In her latest compilation, Schon evaluates 1231 reference books, fiction, and nonfiction, mainly published in the last five years."

"Evaluates" is what it says here. And, a minor point, it says "her", which also shows that the reviewer didn't read the description. How in heaven's name would there be the text of over one thousand books in one volume?

I must add that I haven't read the volume; my review is here merely to even out what seems to me an unfair judgment of the book. Now, with a neutral rating, I hope that someone will post a review of the contents.

This book IS NOT what it says. These ARE NOT books in Spanish for children. This is just somebody who has researched Spanish books for children and what you are buying ARE NOT the actual books, but his recommendations. There is no description so you don't know what you have bought until you pay $40. I am pursuing a refund.

Most of the entries are for authors, from Aesop to Stephenie Meyer. Although the emphasis is on literature in the U.S. and Great Britain, some individuals from other countries, such as Swedish author Astrid Lindgren and Dutch illustrator Dick Bruna, are also included. A handful of entries cover characters, among them Nancy Drew and Thomas the Tank Engine. There are also a few entries for works, such as The Arabian Nights; but in most cases, book titles serve as see references to author entries ("ALICE IN WONDERLAND. See CARROLL, LEWIS"). Preceding the entries are a list of acronyms, a chronology beginning circa 900 and ending in 2008, and an introduction to children's literature and its development....Closing the volume are an appendix of awards and a well-organized bibliography. Russian literature has an illustrious history. This Historical Dictionary of Russian Literature strives to give the reader a grasp of that history. This valuable reference work opens with a year-by-year chronology starting with a sacred text introducing the written alphabet in ca.860 and ending in 2010 with Putin's proposal to compile a canon of 100 books that every Russian school child must read and be tested on. This chronology is followed by an extensive narrative essay that discusses Russian literature's evolution during various literary time periods, including the romantic era, modernist poetry, and nineteenth-century novels.
The heavily cross-referenced historical dictionary deals with poetry, novels, historical narratives, philosophical writings, and dramas....There is an extensive bibliography organized around the historical eras found in the introductory narrative essay....A superb, well-written, interesting book. Entries are dense, complex, and intricate; they are appropriate for students and scholars of Russian literature who are emphasizing literary criticism and theory. The entries live up to the author's declared intention to have them function independently, but they also serve as a web of interconnected themes and ideas. One major theme emergent in this dictionary is the old but still true idea that some of the best Russian literature negotiates encounters with Western ideas and aesthetics, while seeking always to help mold and comprehend its own unique cultural identity. Invaluable but expensive, this concise reference work offers a short chronology of Russian literature, useful appendices and over 100 cross-referenced entries on everything from authors to movements. The selected entries have a minimum of four pages, and include 29 books, 50 book chapters, 349 articles, and 10 pamphlets, for a total of 438 entries.

An appendix includes the titles of the 245 journals cited, along with the appropriate entry numbers for each. Author and subject indexes provide access to the contents, with the subject index providing access to unique terms. The detailed contents pages are designed to enable the reader to quickly find appropriate entries through the use of extensive and detailed subheadings.
