Muckrakers: A Biographical Dictionary of Writers and Editors, by Edd Applegate

During the 1800s, the United States progressed at a remarkable rate. Commerce gave rise to regional specialization and contributed to the growth of cities. By 1860 the nation had prospered to the extent that it no longer depended on Europe to purchase its goods. Innovations in technology helped increase production, especially in textiles, and transportation projects helped reduce costs of certain products. As the country progressed, so did its citizenry and their attention to certain interests: movements on issues like women's rights, capital punishment, workers' rights, education, and mental health swept across the country. As these groups advanced their causes, a kind of journalism began to capture readers' attention: the exposZ. Although examples similar to it had appeared occasionally in various publications years before, it became more prevalent at the turn of the century. In the spring of 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech in which he compared certain crusading journalists to a character in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress: 'There is filth on the floor, and it must be scraped up with the muckrake; and there are times and places where this service is the most needed of all the services that can be performed.' In Muckrakers: A Biographical Dictionary of Writers and Editors, Professor Edd Applegate profiles the men and women who either wrote muckraking journalism or edited publications that featured muckraking articles. Some of the most important figures of journalism are here, including Nellie Bly, Upton Sinclair, Lincoln Steffens, George Kennan, Jack London, Frank Norris, Rachel Carson, George Seldes, and I.F. Stone. The book contains more than fifty entries, each discussing the subject's professional career and major works. In some cases, comments about the subject's work by others have been included, as well as suggestions for further reading. As a resource guide, Muckrakers will be of interest to professors, scholars, and students interested in learning more about the individuals who played such significant roles in muckraking journalism.

The Commedia dell'Arte of Flaminio Scala: A Translation and Analysis of 30 ScenariosFrom Scarecrow Press

The Commedia dell'Arte of Flaminio Scala presents a translation and commentary of selected scenarios composed or collected by the actor-manager Flaminio Scala that were first published in 1611. Thirty of Scala's 50 scenarios are included, complete with a detailed scene-by-scene analysis that demonstrates the methodology of Italian improvised theatre in the early modern period for the purposes of study as well as re-creation.

Taking into consideration previous translations of the work, Richard Andrews's English translation and lengthy analytic commentary of the scenarios provide an overview of the commedia dell'arte style, describing how actors fleshed out scenes by inserting existing material from their repertoire into a plot framework and demonstrating a constant interchange of plot, characterization, and scene structure that moved between scripted and improvised comedy. Andrews points out similarities between the scenarios, borrowings from earlier Italian scripted comedies, analogies with other early modern drama including Shakespeare, and the re-use of these components by later dramatists such as Molière and Goldoni.

An extensive introduction sets the parameters for the commentaries, giving a description of commedia dell'arte as a phenomenon, explaining the categories of masked characters, and describing the nature and structure of the genre. A comprehensive index is organized for quick reference and lists which characters and masks appear in which scenarios, as well as frequent scenic components that recur, such as types of speeches, relationships, and emotional situations.

West Side Story: Cultural Perspectives on an American Musical, by Elizabeth A. Wells

In West Side Story: Cultural Perspectives on an American Musical, Wells presents a major scholarly study of the famous American musical West Side Story, viewing the work from cultural, historical, and musical perspectives. From the "mambo craze" of the 1950s to the work's ongoing permeation of popular culture, Wells looks at the myriad ways in which this canonic musical reflects and refracts American culture.

Drawing on primary documentary sources, oral history—including interviews with members of the original creative team such as Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents—and early sketch material, Wells explores the creation and dissemination of West Side Story to diverse audiences. After a short history of West Side Story's creation, each chapter investigates the musical from a different cultural perspective, examining its relationship to the classical canon and Leonard Bernstein's investment in that tradition, juvenile delinquency in the 1950s, feminism and the women of West Side Story, Latin-American and Hispanic influences, and its international reception and distribution. Richly illustrated with images and musical examples and complete with factual appendixes like a chronological timeline, discography, and cast and crew list, this fascinating account is exciting for specialists and non-specialists alike.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* West Side Story is such an iconic musical, it’s difficult to believe that, as Wells points out in her illuminating study, it could have been an unmitigated disaster. As originally conceived by choreographer Jerome Robbins, with a script by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, it was meant to be an exploration of anti-Semitism, a modern-day adaptation of Romeo and Juliet with warring Catholic and Jewish street gangs. Although the Jewish plot was dropped in favor of Puerto Rican gang members, it was still the creation of four “privileged” Jewish American men who, as Sondheim notes, “had never even met a Puerto Rican.” What’s more, it featured no stars. Consequently, very few people thought the show had a chance on Broadway, and therefore it failed to attract investors. Both scholarly and entertaining, Wells explains in great and fascinating detail how West Side Story became one of the most successful musicals of the twentieth century and beyond and, more important, why it made an indelible mark on American culture. One of the great ironies of the story, she observes, is that the score was thought to be “unsingable” by Columbia Record executives. A must for serious fans of Broadway musicals. --June Sawyers

Review
In this expansion of her doctoral dissertation, Wells (Mount Allison Univ., Canada) explores West Side Story in terms of musical and cultural expression. She begins with an account of the show from its inception to its Broadway opening. She next considers Leonard Bernstein's musical score and then discusses ethnic (primarily Hispanic) issues, gender relationships, and juvenile delinquency as revealed in the show. Finally, she writes of how perceptions of the work have changed over time. Wells's approach is broader than Nigel Simeone's in Leonard Bernstein: West Side Story (CH, Jun'10, 47-5555), which emphasizes the composer's contribution; thus the two works complement each other well. Both join Keith Garebian's The Making of West Side Story (1995) in providing in-depth treatment of this major Broadway musical. Numerous illustrations and musical examples enhance the text. Wells demonstrates command of the subject through her excellent documentation and bibliography. However, neither Wells nor Simeone provides major discussion of the film made from the musical, a subject that cries out for consideration. Summing Up: Recommended. Performing arts and large academic collections. (CHOICE)

Elizabeth Wells has written a marvelous thing, a book that is simultaneously a compulsively readable story about the genesis and reception of a famous musical, and a diligent, intent analysis of the sociology, the history, the musical technique, responsible for the remarkable success of West Side Story. There is everything to admire here: a detailed understanding of Bernstein's aesthetic as expressed in his writings and lectures; the most careful perusal of Bernstein's, Robbins's, and Sondheim's notes and comments on their work; and some fascinating pieces of research, including interviews with real juvenile delinquents who attended performances. (Daniel Albright, Ernest Bernbaum Professor of Literature, Associate in Mather House, The Department of English and American Literature and Language, Harvard University)

(Booklist, Starred Review)

Any true West Side Story fan won't want to be without Elizabeth A. Wells' study West Side Story: Cultural Perspectives on an American Musical, published by the always adventurous (especially when it comes to musical theater) Scarecrow Press. Wells, an associate professor and head of the music department at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada, provides lots of history about how the musical was put together, with eyewitness accounts provided by Bernstein and librettist Arthur Laurents. Once she creates this base, each of her chapters looks at the work through the lens of a different cultural trend, whether it's juvenile delinquency in the 1950s, Hispanic life in New York or the influence of feminism. (Jewish Exponent)

Wells and Simeone have joined the still short but growing list of scholars who are defining musical theater studies, and each has joined that list with an insightful and skilled monograph about one of the genre’s most problematic yet successful works. (Journal of the American Musicological Society)

Wells, the Pickard-Bell Chair in Music at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada, examines the iconic American musical from cultural, historical, and music perspectives. (Rochester Review)

Elizabeth A. Wells is associate professor and head of the music department at Mount Allison University. She has been published in Cambridge Opera Journal and Journal of the American Musicological Society. Since the recent attacks of September 11, 2001, the intelligence community has been on a hiring binge. According to some estimates, over half of those currently employed in the agencies and departments that comprise the U.S. intelligence community have less than six years experience. Consequently, there are a lot of people "learning the ropes" on how to become an intelligence professional. A Spy's Résumé describes what people can expect when they decide to leave government or military service.

In this book, Marc Anthony Viola assists government and military professionals transitioning into the civilian world, using techniques from the U.S. intelligence community. While Viola includes advice on résumé writing and interviewing, his book goes beyond "how to find a job" to the challenge of conceptualizing a new vocation, as well as looking at the personal journey from the perspective of a former intelligence professional transitioning to the civilian sector. Viola uses experiences and observations from his own military intelligence career in ways that are of interest and of benefit to anyone thinking of changing careers or in transition with his or her own life.

Educational, informative and entertaining on many levels, A Spy's Resume is written with a wry sense of humor and a wisdom that comes from experience. [An] excellent book, well written and giving a wide-open window into the pros and cons of intelligence life. . . . is definitely a book to read and absorb. (International Association for Intelligence Education, September 2009)

Life in the Military Intelligence Field...
By Bonita
This book is informative, educational and entertaining on many levels. Written with a wry sense of humor, it is an excellent and obvious choice for anyone leaving the Armed Forces Military Intelligence field written by an insider who has experienced the ups and downs of military life as well and been an insider "Beltway Bandit" contractor. The book could also benefit young college graduates who are curious about the Intelligence field in general and what the experience of working in this sometimes secretive community is really like. The author is a seasoned intelligence professor chosen to work on the 9/11 study publication and his professional and personal experiences afford the reader great insights into the intelligence career field.

Second, this book involves in depth soul searching and is written from the heart with a passion for the topic, the pros and cons of the Intelligence life in the military and civilian world. While the book offers sometimes intent detail and philosophical discussion and analysis of the politics of personnel, work relationships between management and employees etc in this field it also offers very succinct and practical suggestions for people of ages and at all stages of life choices in search of work in the intelligence field.

The practical advise involves detailed lists such as the benefits list to look for when hiring out for civilian companies, job interview advice and "How Tos." One of my favorites was "Julia's Suit Test," for the gentlemen to ensure they were appropriately decked out for job interviews. I also chastised Marc for not including at least a "go to" source for our ladies leaving the Army on "dress for success" advice.

Marc Viola's soul searching journey can be of benefit to so many of us out there making transitions in our lives and I highly recommend this book to junior or seasoned officers and enlisted veterans ETSing or retiring from the Armed Services as well as to civilian junior, fresh starry eyed intelligence field hopefuls.

All-source/Multi-Int advice for transitioning from MIL to CIV employment!
By AMVirginia
I regard this manuscript as a FM (Field Manual) filled with TTP's (Tactic's, Techniques, and Procedures) rather than just another book of advice. "A Spy's Résumé" is a must-read for anyone, at any level, taking the leap from military service to the civilian sector. Whether you have served your initial obligation or have made a (1st) career of it, this book serves as a guide for your job search and your soul. Told through the eyes of an individual that both personally and professionally excelled at AND wrestled with his time and service, Marc was able to weave a dynamic and telling tale of his challenges and translate that experience into specific, sage advice for the consumer. Especially entertaining and educational to this "twenty-percenter" were the MavAxioms and new words he constructed to get his point across...definitely marks of a creative mind. I must say that this book has been a ready reference for me in my time of transition. Great job! Highly recommended reading for all TAP (Transition Assistance Program) participants. As Marc says over and over again, "believe in yourself" and ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

From the Source...
By Marc
This intensely autobiographical account of a military intelligence officer's transition has evolved into a survival guide for troops leaving the military. Written from an intelligence perspective (as a "spy"), the book is packed with lessons-learned from transitioning out of the structured military environment into the unforgiving, sometimes hostile, world of capitalism. Successfully marketing one's talents requires jump-starting creativity that is often compartmentalized or repressed during military service. Several chapters explore this, along with ideas for awakening the creative spirit. The book is also an examination of loss and trauma. For some, transition requires finally dealing with the intensity of these emotions. The military is more than a job for some; it is a way of life. Leaving that behind requires grieving, and letting go of old dreams. An entire chapter compares leaving the military to a divorce. In that way, the book is applicable for anyone going through life change, and creating a new path for oneself.

The Chicago of Fiction: A Resource Guide, by James A. Kaser

The importance of Chicago in American culture has made the city's place in the American imagination a crucial topic for literary scholars and cultural historians. While databases of bibliographical information on Chicago-centered fiction are available, they are of little use to scholars researching works written before the 1980s.

In The Chicago of Fiction: A Resource Guide, James A. Kaser provides detailed synopses for more than 1,200 works of fiction significantly set in Chicago and published between 1852 and 1980. The synopses include plot summaries, names of major characters, and an indication of physical settings. An appendix provides bibliographical information for works dating from 1981 well into the 21st century, while a biographical section provides basic information about the authors, some of whom are obscure and would be difficult to find in other sources.

Written to assist researchers in locating works of fiction for analysis, the plot summaries highlight ways in which the works touch on major aspects of social history and cultural studies (i.e., class, ethnicity, gender, immigrant experience, and race). The book is also a useful reader advisory tool for librarians and readers who want to identify materials for leisure reading, particularly since genre, juvenile, and young adult fiction, as well as literary fiction, are included.

Review
In sum, Kaser's book is inclusive and enlightening. Any writer who came from, traveled through, settled in, or imagined Chicago and included it in his or her fictional work finds a place in The Chicago of Fiction. ....The book is substantive, providing the perfect place to discover little known fictional gems set whole or in part in the great American city of Chicago.--Kathy Merlock Jackson
Virginia Wesleyan College

The Journal of American Culture  Volume 35, Number 1  March 2012, pp. 86-87.

Kaser (College of Staten Island, CUNY; The Washington, D.C. of Fiction: A Research Guide, 2006), a specialist in American cultural studies, has done a masterful job of locating and arranging fictional works primarily set in Chicago. Kaser states that his task was made more difficult because catalogers did not ordinarily provide subject designations in this genre before 1980. Cataloging rules changed by 2000 to allow geographic and subject designators for fiction, permitting greater ease in finding such works through keyword-searchable Web-based tools. The bulk of this book consists of an annotated bibliography of novels and collections of short stories (but not dramatic works) published between 1852 and 1980. To offer a more comprehensive source book, Kaser supplements these one-paragraph entries with a designated appendix A, a register of unannotated works whose first editions appeared between 1980 and 2008. Appendix B groups citations for pre-1980 fiction chronologically; readers can use these to find the explanatory notes for works in similar time periods in the alphabetically arranged major portion of the anthology. A general subject index and list of brief biographies, with each entry's own sources, of all the writers on whom some information is available, makes this work easy to read and a pleasure to peruse. The Chicago of Fiction is a boon for writers on the Windy City seeking textual information to portray a mood in their own fictional works; and for the many mavens of Chicago culture, who will appreciate discovering quirky, little-known fictional accounts inspired by a city of significance with often symbolic connotations. Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers.

(CHOICE)

A valuable resource, and a particularly rich one for scholars of American naturalism, given the sheer number of works indexed from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. (Studies in American Naturalism)

The 2,223 total entries vary on how much they focus on Chicago, but the extensive index greatly enables researchers by listing entries by number code under various subjects ranging from Abortion and Academics to Youth Culture and Xenophobia. In addition there are chronological lists by decades from the 1830 to the 1970s. This makes the source useful not only for those interested in Chicago primarily, but also in broader topics where the city plays only a partial role. (American Reference Books Annual)

Review
Rich in names, dates, and facts. . . . Kabatchnik is making an extraordinary contribution to mystery scholarship. (Mystery Scene Magazine, Spring 2010)

This material is astonishingly complete and up to date. The author correctly describes this work as a 'labor of love'. It is also a fascinating document that deserves a place in any library with a sizable collection on theater. (American Reference Books Annual)

Succint, but lively and tantalizing.... If anything, his latest book is bigger and better. In the terminology of the world of theatre, it's a hit! (Deadly Pleasures Mystery Magazine, Spring 2010)

If you love mysteries on the stage, this is a must read.
By Laura
I was coaxed to read the reference book Blood on the Stage, 1925-1950 because it was a finalist at the prestigious Agatha Awards. As both a theatre lover and an aficionado of suspense literature, I found this hefty book a treasure chest of information about 150 crime and detection plays, all deserving attention and study, some of which we'll never see on stage in our life time. Arranged in chronological order, each of the plays analyzed is described by a concise yet thorough plot synopsis, performance data, and scholarly critiques. I was intrigued by the fact that alongside such lions of the genre as Agatha Christie and Edgar Wallace, surprisingly, also included are many mainstream authors like Eugene O'Neill, Somerset Maugham, Ayn Rand, Maxwell Anderson, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Bertolt Brecht----all proving to have been blood- thirsty, dabbling in all sorts of villainies. Blood on the Stage, 1925-1950 follows an earlier volume, Blood on the Stage, 1900-1925. While I am familiar with studies of crime in the cinema, television, and radio, to my knowledge, this is the only series of books dedicated to suspense on the legitimate stage. Unique, and immensely readable, I highly recommend this book.

Reference dictionary for the cinéaste
By schoolboy
I don't think many folks will find a need for a book like this, given that one could find much of this information between IMDB and Google. This is clearly a reference work only, and not necessarily a complete one. For example, I was surprised to find is no entry for Camilio Mastroconque, who directed dozens for films in the 40's and 50's, including someclassics with Totò! If you are looking for an overview, something to sit down and read for enjoyment, look for Peter Bondanella's book on Italian cinema. That said, it is convenient to have this info in one handy volume, and it it a worthy purchase if ou can find it at a good discount.

The A to Z of the Puritans (The A to Z Guide Series), by Charles Pastoor, Galen K. Johnson

Members of the Church of England until the mid-16th century, the Puritans thought the Church had become too political and needed to be "purified." While many Puritans believed the Church was capable of reform, a large number decided that separating from the Church was their only remaining course of action. Thus the mass migration of Puritans (known as Pilgrims) to America took place. Although Puritanism died in England around 1689 and in America in 1758, Puritan beliefs, such as self-reliance, frugality, industry, and energy remain standards of the American ideal. The A to Z of Puritans tells the story of Puritanism from its origins until its eventual demise. This is done through a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on important people, places, and events.

Satan in the Dance Hall: Rev. John Roach Straton, Social Dancing, and Morality in 1920s New York City, by Ralph G. Giordano

Satan in the Dance Hall explores the overwhelming popularity of social dancing and its close relationship to America's rapidly changing society in the 1920s. The book focuses on the fiercely contested debate over the morality of social dancing in New York City, led by moral reformers and religious leaders like Rev. John Roach Straton. Fed by the firm belief that dancing was the leading cause of immorality in New York, Straton and his followers succeeded in enacting municipal regulations on social dancing and moral conduct within the more than 750 public dance halls in New York City. Ralph G. Giordano conveys an easy to read and full picture of life in the Jazz Age, incorporating important events and personalities such as the Flu Epidemic, the Scopes Monkey Trial, Prohibition, Flappers, Gangsters, Texas Guinan, and Charles Lindbergh, while simultaneously describing how social dancing was a hugely prominent cultural phenomenon, one closely intertwined with nearly every aspect of American society from the Great War to the Great Depression. With a bibliography, an index, and over 35 photos, Satan in the Dance Hall presents an interdisciplinary study of social dancing in New York City throughout the decade.

Historical Dictionary of Croatia (Historical Dictionaries of Europe), by Robert Stallaerts

Croatia, a former republic of Yugoslavia, has been a self-declared independent state since July 25, 1991. To its own people, however, it is a much older country that is finally getting another chance to forge a nation. The Croats trace their roots back many centuries, and the depth of this resurgent nationalism helps explain why Yugoslavia split as it did and where it did. As Croatia and its people try to make a success of their new state, they can take hope in the notable progress that has already been made in regards to its economic restructuring, democratization, and a rapprochement with their neighbors and Europe more broadly.

The third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Croatia relates the history of this country through a detailed chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, places, and events; institutions and organizations; and political, economic, social, cultural, and religious facets.

Some entries are very short (e.g., two sentences on the river Cetina). The longest entries are about 8 pages (e.g., Political parties, Yugoslavia). Besides see and see also references, bold type within text indicates separate entries. The length of the concluding bibliography has increased from 80 pages in the previous edition to 90 pages here. Especially useful for novices, a 16-page bibliographic introduction highlights key information sources on Croatia that include many Internet resources.
